2022 Packers Stock Report: Week 6
Take a look at the stock report for the Green Bay Packers after a 27-10 loss to the New York Jets in Week 6.

I'll preface this article with a bit of a warning.
I am not going to be happy Gunnar for much of this weekly stock report. In fact, I'm going to be pretty mean (honest) in some of my reviews.
My weekend started great. My firstborn son arrived on Friday. Mom and baby were both happy and healthy, so I was over the moon.
Fast-forward to Sunday at 3:30 p.m. CT, and I was in a miserable mood. What an absolute dud of a performance from our guys in Titletown. Painful to watch, really.
Let's dive right into the stock report for the Green Bay Packers after a 27-10 loss to the New York Jets in Week 6.
BUY
Robert Tonyan- All offseason long, I talked about how I still believed that Robert Tonyan would be a legit offensive threat this season for the Green Bay Packers. After the first few games, however, I was surprised by just how little the Packers used him. In his first action back since tearing his ACL, he still seemed a little hesitant after catching footballs and he wasn't being targeted much, so I put him on hold. Well, if you held him, good news - his stock is going up. He was the lone bright spot on an otherwise awful offense on Sunday, catching 10 passes for 90 yards. Buy.
SELL
Royce Newman- It's time. The Packers just have to find a better option at the right guard position. Royce Newman's worst game was on Sunday, which is really saying something. Type Newman's name in the search bar on Twitter and you'll find play after play of the second-year guard struggling to block anyone, both in the run and pass game. Midway through the second quarter, he was benched for Jake Hanson. It doesn't look like he'll start this week either.
Matt LaFleur/Adam Stenavich- Speaking of coaching decisions, this 'sell' is more on whoever made the decision to go with Hanson as the next man in after Newman. The Packers coaching staff consistently talks about how the team has to find the best five guys on the offensive line and get them out there together. In my opinion (and many Packers fans share this same opinion), Yosh Nijman and Zach Tom are the next-best players behind the starting five, if not better than a couple of them. Instead, the Packers rolled out Hanson, to the surprise of many. We'll see how the Packers offensive line shakes out up front in the next few weeks. But the decision to go with Hanson over Tom, or shuffling around the line to get Nijman in, was a head-scratcher.
Quay Walker- After the first three games, the early returns on the Packers' first round draft pick from Georgia were promising. The next four games have been painful to watch. Walker looks like a rookie in over his head on defense. He struggles to navigate zone defense and is just straight-up not good in the run game. The Packers front office really sold out in free agency and the draft to make this defense one of the best in the league. So far, it's been far from it.
Simplicity- After one of the worst offensive outputs in recent memory, Aaron Rodgers got up to the podium in the post-game presser and spoke about how the offense maybe needs to be simpler, since many of the players are making mental mistakes or executing poorly. Screw that. This is the National Football League. If you're a starter in this league... heck, if you play in this league, the last mistakes you should make are mental mistakes. Watching the offense, it seems like 9/11 or 10/11 of the players are doing the right thing. The one or two players who aren't? Turns out most times to be the killer. Sell simplicity. The Packers have to execute better.
HOLD
Rich Bisaccia- Same old Packers special teams? Through the first five games, that didn't seem to be the case. The Packers paid a lot of money to bring in Rich Bisaccia as coordinator, and it looked like it was on track to pay off. A blocked field goal and a blocked punt returned for a touchdown on Sunday, among other things, proved to be the opposite of that early-season success. I know how much all of you like PFF grades, so here's a fun one for you: The Packers' overall special teams grade (39.6) was the lowest of any special teams grade of any team in any game this season. Although it never should've happened, I'm hoping it was a one-game thing that Bisaccia can have his players learn from. So, for now, hold.

While I found most of your comments interesting….I’ve got to disagree with the quay walker comment. Quay has been a strong rookie so far, but the problem is not him but the defense I’ve watched. Barry doesn’t play to his players strengths and his schemes are too passive! He is also too slow to react and adjust.He needs to be aggressive and more physical in his attack….too many studs are made to just sit their hands!

Careful. I received a lot of downvotes for saying pretty much the same thing about Walker earlier.
I think it's a shame how he's been coached and used. With his speed and talent, you'd think he'd be easy to put in a position to have more impact plays.

Actually, I was just leading off with the warning to point out that a lot of people were down on Walker. I've been over downvotes for a long time, with examples as recent as yesterday to prove it.

The packers aren’t all that good with rookies in my opinion, unless they are long term projects. It either sit for at least a year for the most part or try to force them to master everything.
Last year we tried to make Amari Rodgers a full route receiver rather than trying to get anything out of him that he came to us with first. We took Stokes and made him try to master zone. This year we do the same with Doubs and I think they hoped to with Watson. I think Walker is another.
Instead of putting them in a position to do certain things well and going from there, we throw them in head first. Thus tends to lead to inevitable failings and to reduce their impact in the positive areas. Rather than using and playing to strengths and building out from there, we just treat them as if they should be vets or won’t play them at all. I’m happy to bring in slowly if they aren’t needed, but this year we knew that some would be and yet we make no plan for that or to maximize their contribution now.
I think if anything the LaFleur era has been worse with rookies than MM was.

Absolutely totally agree - now there are always exceptions - when there are /is absolutely no choice then Lafleur uses the rooks = but on average it is minimal both in scope and responsibilities. This year however some 2nd year guys are not producing - Stokes Amari Newman Myers Slaton have all been up and down this year to date.
I used to hate the way that they used King - he couldnt cover anything but he could tackle when in the box. We let him go and now we dont have anyone other than some of the old vets who can do that - which worries me because those are the plays that get vets hurt.
I think that maybe if Lafleur has had issues it is with his offseason and preseason workouts and planning. If it wasnt for AR and the vets like Davante and MVS and Cobb and Jones - we might not have been that good offensively .
And as I pointed out before - we had 4 games that we could have/maybe should have lost - AZ San Fran Baltimore and Cleveland without some rather flukey plays.

Yes. I prefer an attacking D. They just can't miss so many tackles. They might give up some plays (who doesn't in the league?), but that's how to get turnovers and big plays too.

A blocked punt and FG attempt? You mean the OL didn't do its job? This continuing problem seems to be spreading to the only part of the team that had showed professionalism, fire and commitment. One bad game, stuff happens. Two or three? Then we have a problem.

Buy: Tonyan is a good choice, and I can't wait to Buy Jones or Dillan.
Sell: The coaches' choice of the best 5 (or six for that matter).
Hold: Slayton. He had a tough game and I hope it improves him.

Congratulations on the new addition to your family. I'm surprised you have time to roll out the Week 6 edition of the stock report--which almost looks as bad as a real investment account lately.
Buy: Using Jaire in tighter coverage; this needs to continue.
Hold: Agree about Bisaccia. Despite the first major slip-ups, I have confidence this unit will continue to improve. It helps to remember where we're coming from and that they're still a work in progress.
Sell: Offensive line follies. Get this straightened out. Slide Jenkins back to where he belongs and try Yosh at RT (if that doesn't work, maybe try the next Hokie up approach with Tenuta for the following game).
Sell: Both "simplicity" and "I don't know what that means." Just get on the same page and produce a win this time--it's not going get any easier going forward.
Buy: Another WR. Tell me Gute is looking for answers besides working out Fryfogle, Rambo, and Cotton. Gute has had success with UDFAs and practice squad pickups in the past, but I think we're going to need a little more here.

Maybe since (I hope) Newman was benched, they could use him to block on punts and field goals? Maybe they put those small guys in there for punt coverage reasons but, there's nothing to cover down field if the kick is blocked and being returned.

Here is my biggest lesson from this weekend:
Sell: Packers whole upper management
I was hoping MLF could bounce back after an embarrassing loss to the Giants, but he then just embarrassed himself further this week. In London, the offense actually showed up for a half of football. I seriously doubt his ability to make meaningful adjustments and correct people when they are not doing what is best for the players to succeed (Joe Barry). I want and think that both will be gone after this season. Ejiro Evero (Broncos DC), Ben Johnson (Lions OC), DeMeco Ryan’s (49ers DC) and Shane Steichen (Eagles OC) are my top 4 candidates to be the next head coach of the Packers.
Demote Steno to OL coach - so far, the results haven’t been great, and I’m not exactly sure what a non-play-calling OC does. Mainly, though, because Butkus has been bad. I don’t know what is going through his head.
Gutey has been okay, but so far, I think he whiffed BAD on taking Quay Walker over Devin Lloyd, blowing a 2nd rounder to take Christian Watson instead of staying put and taking George Pickens and Alec Pierce. Wyatt hasn’t been good as well. We need better.
Mark Murphy is the root of the problem. I don’t know how this works, but the board of Packers directors should vote Gutey in as owner instead of Murphy - what a disasterous move extending A Rod instead of getting a once in a lifetime haul of draft picks and players for A Rod.

Gutey has whiffed many the past 3 years it's the success of the team and also the FA's that kind of covered for him i guess. He is more into RAS and measurables(looking for lot of upside) than taking a player. But his FA's acquisition have always paid off well.
Before start of this season i am also in for trading either Adams or Rodgers for picks. But looking at how we dealt with the Adams picks i am skeptical that trading Rodgers and getting picks would make us any better. Yes atleast it would've not held us handicapped at the Salary cap.

Trading Rodgers was not intended to make us immediate contenders, it would be to have even more pieces to start a rebuild around Jordan Love. The jury is out on Eric Stokes, Josiah Deguara, and Jordan Love (for now), although Zach Tom and Romeo Doubs, at least, seem legit. Amari looks like a bust though. Gutey’s been okay, but the Packers need someone better

Agreed even i am not taking about us being contenders and i do really like the idea or providing Love with some talented team around him to support him. But again looking at how we handled our draft picks that we got from Adams i am worried even if we trade Rodgers we would've used those picks for real game changers. Yes we could've had game changers instead we have been stuck with ok players so far.
Coming to this years Draft picks yes Doubs is our star and for Sure Zach seems to be a good one.

I agree with you Packy on 2 points. The long term issue with this team is Mark Murphy. His judgement is poor and must be influencing any board members who might have any common sense. But lets face it, that won't change this season. I also agree that at a minimum, Steno needs to go hands-on again re: the OLine. It needs some serious attention and changes.

Stock down - Pat O'Donnell
I was at US Bank Stadium for the week 1 fiasco. Came on here afterwards asking why O'Donnell catches the ball in a stutter step, then goes left foot, right foot, left foot, kick. There were several nearly blocked punts in that game and it seemed odd that Pat would intentionally walk closer to the line before punting, and waste the time it takes to take the extra step. I asked then - why not catch the ball, step with your right, step with your left and kick with the right? Two steps, not three.
Yeah, the offensive line sucked on Sunday, but now that punts are getting blocked I'm back scratching my head as to why this guy sticks with this odd approach.

Regardless of the buy/sell stuff, here's some food for thought. The Packers have 11 games remaining. To reach the playoffs now with the 17 game schedule, it's a good bet you need 11 wins. The Packers are at 3-3, meaning they need to win 8 of the next 11 to likely reach the playoffs.
As I check the schedule I see these wins:
Washington
Detroit(once)
Tennessee
Chicago
Dallas
Rams
Miami
Miami, Dallas, Rams could go either way. That seems obvious, but today do you favor the Packers in any of those games? I'm a bit afraid of the mauling the team might take against Buffalo and Philadelphia who look like the Super Bowl teams to me. Last year the Packers beat both the Rams and Cincy who made it to the Super Bowl. I don't see them doing that again.
I see these losses:
Buffalo
Philadelphia
Minnesota
Detroit(one of the two games will go Detroit's way)
As of today the Packers would have 10 wins and 7 losses and on the cusp. If any of the 'maybes' go in as a loss, it's all over.
Maybe fortunes will change but this is starting to smell like the Brewers season with a 'close but no cigar' ending, assuming they can right the ship. If they lose to Washington this weekend, get out the lifeboats.

on the blocked punt they are using small guys to block rushers so they then can get downfield and tackle but they still have to block 300 pound rushers, makes no sense as was proven Sunday.

I also wonder how the lack of active LBs affected that group if at all. It could be we were using new personnel due to injuries.

I didn't buy any stock the last few weeks, so I have none to sell, and buying at such a low value now, while possibly foolish not to, it still looks like pyrite. I'd gladly pay more green when the real gold is more visible.

I'm with you Gunnar. I have only one addition.
SELL, SELL, SELL: Mason Crosby. Blocked FG goes to his account because ball trajectory was low. Go, and watch! Second, he did not kick to the end zone in two whole games. He lost his leg strength and you'll see more blocked FG from 35 yards or longer.
I wish you and your family all the best and wish you your son to became legendary QB in NFL.

Fix the Packers:
Offense
A: Newman out, Jenkins to Guard, Yosh to RT
B. Feed Aaron Jones minimum 20 touches per game no exceptions!
C. Romeo Doubs is the #1 WR, look to him 1st.
D. Degura needs to play more as an H back.
E. MLF MUST drill it into Aaron Rodgers head that he is the point guard, get the ball out quickly!
Defense:
Attack Attack Attack, you slack off and miss too many tackles you are on the bench!
Special Teams:
You fuck up a blocking assignment and you are on the bench, no exceptions!
There, all fixed, that is all…

Everybody on Cheesehead says that to stop the bleeding, we must deal with O-Line 1st. Me, too.
But shuffling Newman and Hansen in there has got us nowhere. Maybe it's time to move on. We drafted Rhyan and Tom, and have Caleb Jones the UDFA. Let's see if these guys can play.

That's the thing for me we dress a lot of O-Linemen, so why not try to see what they have? Especially when everyone and their mother can see, the line is a mess. Hats off to jets, but come on, is the line rally that bad?

My 3 factors are
1. The OL issues.
2. AR needs to know exactly how and where WR will be before throwing. WR corp is pretty much all new or old. defenses just need to cover AR's favorites. He needs more time but it's not happening with this OL.
3. AR is older and slower, and that happens every year. He is unlikely to extend plays like he used to.
AR is right about simplifying. Remove a lot of the subjective reads by WRs when route running so both QB and WR are on the same page.
This could be the beginning of the end.

The cancer embedded in this team is metastascizing. I called last week's meltdown and Im predicting the same thing this week. This team is broken. This franchise is broken. You dont give a cancer patient a facelift. You cut the cancer out and kill whatever's left with radiation and chemo. Its only going to keep getting worse. And before those of you with the unicorn blinders on come at me for being a debbie downer, im just calling it how i see it. I see a team with no heart, no soul, and absolutely no leadership. Put that all together and you have zero answers. Brace yourselves, friends. Were in uncharted waters and were a long way off from shore.

This is NOT unfixable! In fact, by simply moving some pieces around on the OLine, GB can (1) improve its offense (2) Keep its defense off the field more. This is NOT rocket science. And although I still would have a HOLD on Gutey, I don't believe bringing in a WR will fix the team more than fixing the OLine. Give your collective heads a shake, Mssrs LaFleur and Steno. Both of you fellows are closing in on my SELL list...
