Adams, Montgomery in Good Spirits to Play vs. Dallas

The odds that Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery takes the field as an active participant next Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys are slim. Slim to none.

Even so, the former receiver-turned-tailback had a sense of optimism that he and the training staff will do everything they can to have him ready by Sunday. Albeit a different area of his ribs, Montgomery said he suffered a similar injury in last year's NFC Championship game against the Atlanta Falcons. He didn't have a game to worry about playing in the following week, and he certainly didn't have 10 days worth of rest until that game.

This time around, having over a week to heal the "multiple broken ribs" suffered in Thursday night's win over the Chicago Bears plays into Montgomery's favor. Much like Jordy Nelson did in the aforementioned title game, Montgomery could wear a protective Kevlar vest to help soften some of the blows next week.

"I'm going to continue to get treatment," Montgomery told reporters on Tuesday. "We're going to talk about a type of plan, as far as types of protection I can wear. Obviously, there's rib cages and flak jackets."

Montgomery suffered the rib injury at the end of his first carry against Bears. It involved Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan's knee getting lodged into Montgomery's side, something he described as a "hammer and nail-type situation." He then proceeded to carry the ball four more times on that ensuing opening drive before removing himself from the game.

The only fear is that damage could be inflicted to internal organs, all the more reason why the Packers are more than likely to sit Montgomery for at least a week. Much like his backup, Jamaal Williams, who is expected to miss a game at the least due to a knee sprain also suffered in week four.

For what it's worth, Montgomery felt significantly better on Tuesday than he did over the weekend. Wide receiver Davante Adams does as well, but like Montgomery, he may be a long shot to play Sunday as well.

Adams suffered a concussion on a violent hit from Trevathan, landing him in the hospital overnight before being released the following morning. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, a source close to Adams believes that he may very well play against the Cowboys. "I think he goes," the source said. A similar source told Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette that they "can't see him not playing," which coincides with the earlier report.

Currently in concussion protocol, Adams would have to be upgraded and show visible signs of progression before any decision can be made on him playing. Last season, Adams was in the concussion protocol for less than a week before being cleared in time for the week seven game against the Bears.

These are two injuries that have to be monitored and handled with great care, and given the Packers' historically conservative approach with injuries, there shouldn't be any doubt that they'll make the right decision. However, in an offense whose starting tackles in David Bakhtiari (hamstring) and Bryan Bulaga (ankle) are in limbo, the Packers could use all of the help they can get, but not at the expense of shortening a career.

Adams if available yes. Monty if available no. A RB with busted ribs sounds like a terrible idea.

I agree with EdsLaces.

With 2 games and then a bye, it would be the best thing for Montgomery to take this time to heal up. I'd rather him get healed up and make the strong push after the bye.

I would be careful so they don't rehurt themselves. It is a long season

I tend to agree. Adams especially: concussions tend to recur and brain injuries are no laughing matter.

...as opposed to rib injuries, where you just can't laugh.

Play them until they drop.

Just thought I would provide a dissenting opinion.

I say sit both of them. Packers will need them more, later in the season...

I think they can afford to sit both of them , especially if Buuges and Bhaktiari a back. We definitely have enough play makers at WR to let Tae get his rest. And as long as Jones can stay healthy, he Rip and Mays can handle the backfield for a couple games.

Just a thought but would a trade for either Jeremy Hill or Gio Bernard be that bad of an idea? I mean somebody’s carries will most definitely go down with Mixon in the mix (get it mix..Mixon I crack myself up) anyway just a thought.

So why bother writing it.

Price would have to be right as in very cheap. But yeah, either guy could help the Pack. AP will be available real cheap soon as well. Use the next 2 games to find out what we have in the rookies.

Ehh AP is what 32 no thanks but Gio is 25 and Hill is 24 and it appears that Gio has leaped over Hill in what is most likely the number 2. Im just saying even though Gio is the better receiving threat Hill at 6’1 230 is a bruiser him a Ty could do some serious damage then sprinkle in a little Aaron Jones. Randall for Hill both players need a change of scenery

Recall what MM did to Eddie Lacy's ankle. It should be real simple, when a guy is hurt, don't play him.

You are blaming MM - if anything MM seems to hold guys out too long for fear of having them injured further. Some guys like Matthews etc fight to stay and play - but unless it is something like a broken hand or something that can be taped ( Ankle) he doesnt let them play. Lacey was just fat and you cant pound on your ankle when your are fat even with 100 layers of tape. Look at how great he is doing in Seattle.

Don't ruin the future for a single game. Let the kids get some experience. Even if we lose it, we will have better healthy weapons for a re-match.

Packers practice report for Wednesday is here:

http://www.packers.com/team/injury-report.html

Everyone but Joe Thomas participated. Still too many listed as "limited" for my comfort, but it's Wednesday...

I don't have any particular insight into the medical status of anyone on the team.

But it is an encouraging step in the right direction that there was only one DNP--Joe Thomas--from today's injury report. The list of limited participants is still long and distinguished so things are far from rosy. But heading in the right direction, anyways.

.Jamaal Williams was a full participant, which is rather surprising to me. And may change the thinking on playing Monty and his broken ribs.

I think that Adams will play - Monty might want to - he should only play if they flank him out - or use him as a swing pass guy - but not busting it up into the middle - stupid - would rather see him sit. But if they want to use him like a Jordy - he can play like Jordy did last year with his ribs. Adams can just be the odd sub not a starter and let Allison start with Jordy and Cobb. Maybe it is about time for our tightends to perform - I expected lots of 2 TE sets and have them blocking or running seam routes - but time for Bennett both to catch the ball and to break some tackles. He has been BRUTAL.

It's a no brainer. No pun intended. Sit them both. Broken ribs don't heal in a week. And a head injury is just an insane risk to take after only a few days. We can win without them and will be better off with them that much healthier later on.
