Around the NFC North: 2023 Week 15

What's happening this week and next with the teams in the NFC North.

We were this close to the Packers having the same record as the Bears after week 15. Think about how horrific that would be. Thankfully, the Bears did a Bears and the Packers were able to sustain a gut-punch level loss without having to sink to the Bears' level.

Bears

The Bears choked in a 20-17 loss to the Browns.

Game Notes

  • The Bears are sort of a mirror image of the Packers right now. Their defense is pretty good, but their offense is a perennially underachieving unit thanks to underperforming former first-round picks and a coordinator that basically every fan hates.
  • Chief underperformer is Justin Fields who was 19/40 for 166 yards, 1 TD and 2 picks in this one. Sure, the Browns have a top defense and the Bears had a few key drops, but games like this happen too often for the Bears to be even an average team.
  • The defense is just good now. Ever since Eberflus took over calling the defense, they traded for Montez Sweat, and they started getting multiple interceptions every game the defense has improved almost every week. Time will tell whether it's enough to convince the team to keep him on for another year or not. If not, don't be surprised to see him on the sidelines calling defensive plays for another one of the NFC North teams next year.

Former Packers

  • Big Bob Tonyan had a huge drop on a would-be long touchdown. He ended the game with no stats.

  • TJ Edwards had 6 tackles and a sack and Jack Sanborn had another low snap game with only 11 snaps played.

Next Week

The Bears play the Cardinals on Christmas Eve.

Lions

The Lions embarrassed the Broncos, 42-17.

Game Notes

  • Last week, I said that we had enough evidence to say Jared Goff was a bad QB again but that me writing that would probably prompt him to have a good game. He had five touchdowns and a 134.6 QB rating (note Baker Mayfield's QB rating against Joe Barry was over 20 points better than what Jared Goff had with 5 touchdowns and no picks).
  • The Lions also had a another huge game by both running backs. The two combined for 185 yards and a TD. Interestingly, Gibbs did all his damage on the ground. The Sun God and rookie tight end Sam LaPorta were responsible for the air damage. The Sun God had 112 yards and LaPorta had 3 TDs.
  • The Broncos were just what the doctor ordered for the Lions defense. They held Russel Wilson to 18/32 for 223 yards and the team to 83 combined rush yards. The Broncos strategy during this win streak has been to hide Russel Wilson behind downhill running, with both Wilson and various RBs, defending that si the Lions' bread and butter so don't be convinced that they've fixed their defense just yet.

Next Week

The Lions take on the Vikings

Vikings

The Vikings also choked in a 27-24 OT loss to the Bengals.

Game Notes

  • The Vikings went with a QB change in this game and started Nick Mullens who was 26/33 for 303 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 picks. The Vikings clearly have good pass catchers and a good scheme on offense. All they need at QB is someone who won't turn the ball over and they just can't find it this year.
  • Speaking of pass catchers, rookie Jordan Addison had 6 catches for 111 yards and 2 TDs in his first full game with Justin Jefferson taking away coverage in a while.
  • The Vikings may have found their running back too. Second-year man Ty Chandler has played better each week as he has taken carries away from Alexander Mattison and in this one he had 132 yards and a TD. Chandler ran a 4.38 40 and compared athletically to Lamar MIller.
  • This game demonstrates that in today's NFL you can have an extremely creative defensive scheme, with all the players bought in, shut out a team one week, and then give up 27 points to a back-up QB the next week. There just aren't defenses that hold teams under 10 or even 20 points every single week. NFL offensive schemes and offensive players are just too good. You can make great calls with great players and then a 6'4" 220-pound receiver who runs a 4.50 makes an insane catch and scores.

"This game demonstrates that in today's NFL you can have an extremely creative defensive scheme, with all the players bought in, shut out a team one week, and then give up 27 points to a back-up QB the next week. I'm guessing that number of people expecting that type of defense are in the vast minority.

What I'd like to see is a defense with multiple 1st round draft picks or expensive free agents at least be AVERAGE (when you account for strength of the offenses they play).

The Packers defense has faced only 6 offenses in the top HALF of offenses in 2023 and yet the Packers defense gives up more points to ALL offenses (on average) than they average during the season. Tampa Bay came in with a 20.2 points per game offense, drops 34 on the Packers, and left Lambeau with a 21.1 average. The New York Giants (31st ranking scoring offense) gets 10.5 more points than their average facing a Joe Berry Defense. The Pittsburgh Steelers who fired their OC because he wasn't getting the job done (28th ranked scoring offense) scored 7.1 more points against JB defense than their average. How about the 26th ranked Atlanta Falcons? 6.6 more points against JB defense than their average.

I want a defense that doesn't suck against bad offenses and can be average or better against good offenses. A Joe Barry defense in no way meets that criteria.

I have challenged every sports writer who will listen to go back and read the comments made by Matt Lafleur as to why he hired Joe Barry in the 1st place. Those comments are "very" telling. Lafleur said, and I'm para-phrasing, he always felt challenged going up against Joe Barry's defenses...he went on to say, he never knew what Barry was going to do?
If that is the case, the Packers might just very well have a bigger problem than Barry!
Seriously folks, go back & read what was written when Barry was hired!

Bengals win by the skin of their teeth again--they've been very good at it the past couple of years. Browning is an excellent backup QB. Vikings/Mullens: It's not often you see an interception thrown directly to a defensive lineman laying on the ground-- LOL, great job.

Bears: Can't close out the close games. However, Getsy cannot possibly be any worse than his defensive counterpart in Green Bay.

Lions: A lot of people were on the reverse bandwagon after they lost a couple of times, but they're the best team in the division by far thanks to some excellent drafting. LaPorta is really exciting, and it sure didn't take him long to develop, did it?

3 real games left. Just beat Carolina, for a start. No sense in worrying about the other games and what help we need (if any) till much later.

We have an O in transition and growing together.

We have a D stuck in limbo and players starting to rebel.

I can't believe the O would be ahead of the D at any point in this season.

I put the cart before the horse. Good way to get Barry'd in sh....

"3 real games left. Just beat Carolina, for a start. No sense in worrying about the other games and what help we need (if any) till much later."

That's pretty much it.
The goal of the season has always been the same: find guys who can play and look ahead. The fact that they're flirting with a playoff spot is gravy. It can still happen, but I just want to see guys playing hard and improving. That said...

"We have a D stuck in limbo and players starting to rebel."

LaFleur has essentially lame-ducked Barry and threw his players under the bus in just 36 hours after the TB loss. Devondre Campbell is shitting on the team publicly...Jaire is sitting with a bum shoulder that nobody seems to know the true status of. Good luck, LaF, but you might have paved your own way out the door, too.

Added in Edit: about the only way any of this really makes sense is if LaF has already been told he's unlikely to be retained after the season and he's casting his lot with his coaches.

We will rally and win enough games to win the division, or we won't. Those are the only two possibilities.

It is probable/likely that the season ender, at home, against the Bears, is going to be when and where the questions will be answered.

A loss, at home, to the Bears....following a loss to the Vikings.....would signal some changes. On the other hand, closing out the season with three straight wins and going 4-2 in the division would generally have to be regarded as a good sign. If we make the playoffs...still possible....then everybody can be happy except the people who want Murphy/Gutekunst/LaFleur/Love/ Barry to fail.

The noise coming out of the locker room is disconcerting, but that's what happens when you're losing, and when you're playing hurt and you're getting slammed by people even though you're trying your best.

I'm not really understanding why people want Murphy to saddle his replacement with a new coach/GM who just started. IMO, it makes more sense for the new Prez to put his own guys in place. I'd expect most of the coaching staff back. Whoever we hire to replace Barry will be a guy we want fired in a few years.

Consider this: Several teams want to upgrade their DC. How many future above average DCs are available? And whoever we hire, he's still going to have to deal with injuries and he's still going to have to start guys who aren't really NFL starters because your starters are injured. There's no guarantee we'll be any better on defense.

If we do not make the playoffs, it'll be the 2nd year in a row we didn't. In the previous 30 years, that's only happened a couple of times: 1999 and 2000 (the next year we won 13 games) 2005 and 2006 (we were in the Championship game the next year, and 2017 and 2018, and we were in the Championship game the next two years. So I'd expect a rapid rebound next year, based on what has happened over the past 30 years.

Of course, I think a lot of this angst over the defense is misspent, but that's what we do, whether it's Donatelle or Slovik or Bates or whoever. A little better offensive pressure, and a little better injury luck with some of our defensive starters, and we'd have been a 10 win team this year.

My early betting line is LaFleur throws Barry to the wolves to survive thru the remainder of Murphy's term. I agree with you that the last thing we need is Murphy hiring a new coach prior to his retirement, thereby saddling the team with his obvious suspect judgment.

Also, it just occurred to me that a great replacement for Murphy would be John Schneider. I think I'll get that movement rolling.

LH,

"We will rally and win enough games to win the division, or we won't. Those are the only two possibilities."

GB is mathematically eliminated from winning the division. Lions have won 10 games. If GB wins out, they have 9. It's a race for #2 in the division, and I guess #6 seed in the playoffs is still mathematically possible. So is dead last in the division.

Lets hope Young has a pro bowl career day against the pack and end the misery of thinking this team is going to the playoffs they arent, No chance.
Maybe if Young can have a career passing game then they will fire Barry because season is over,
