Around the NFC North: 2023 Week 8

What's happening this week and next with the teams in the NFC North.

We're close to rock bottom. The Packers have lost five games in a row. That's worse than the Panthers. Worse than the Commanders. Worse than the Bears (who still suck). I guess we still have that at least. The Bears still suck.

Bears

The Bears returned to earth at the hands of a 30-13 drubbing from the otherwise listless Chargers.

Game Notes

  • Tyson Bagent, known for being the son of an arm wrestler, started again in Justin Fields' absence. He wasn't terrible, outside of 2 interceptions, completing 25/37 for 232 yards. Cole Kmet led the way among pass catchers with 10 catches for 79 yards and none of the rushers had more than 34 yards. A depressing day all around.
  • Defensively, they somehow held Austin Ekeler to 29 yards on 15 carries. Justin Herbert did just about whatever he wanted passing, going 31/40 for 298 yards and 3 TDs.
  • It's nice to see the Bears be bad. Makes you feel like everything is right with the world. But everything isn't right in the world and the Packers are just as bad. 10 catches for 79 yards would be a large improvement over Luke Musgrave's 2 for 8 and AJ Dillon's 6 carries for 11 yards would fit right in with the Bears' RBs. Ugh.

Former Packers

  • Big Bobby Tonyan had a catch for 8 yards.
  • TJ Edwards had 13 tackles and Jack Sanborn had 8. The Bears could've just had this former Badger duo and instead broke the bank for Tremaine Edmunds who had 1 tackle in 44 snaps today and has a PFF grade of 53.1 on the season. Yikes.

Next Week

The Bears take on the Saints.

Vikings

We all know what happened.

Game Notes

  • You know, I was just about ready to admit that Kirk Cousins was going on a pretty good run and then his Achilles snapped and now the team is depending on either Jameis Winston or a 37 year-old BYU rookie at QB. How the turntables.
  • Cousins was 23/31 for 274 yards and 2 TDs against the meh Packers defense prior to the injury. Cousins spread the ball around, KJ Osborn, Jordan Addison, and TJ Hockenson all had 6 or more catches and all seemed to be open at will. The Vikings have the top pass offense despite Justin Jefferson's injury and if they can lock him down, will likely have a top pass offense for the next few years disirregardless of who is playing QB.
  • The Vikings' creative defensive scheme continued to improve. Jordan Love was sacked 4 times and intercepted once. The Packers running backs combined for 40 yards on 13 carries. AJ Dillon averaged less than 2 YPC.
  • Tuesday is probably a turning point for the Vikings. Can they pull off a trade for a legitimate veteran QB? Or will they be just another team with a bad BYU QB running the Shanahan scheme after the starter tore his Achilles?

Former Packers

  • Dean Lowry played?

Next Week

The Vikings play the Falcons.

Lions

The Lions took out the Raiders 26-14.

Game Notes

  • This was the Jahmyr Gibbs breakout game. The rookie RB had 26 carries for 152 yards and a TD and another 5 receptions for 37 yards. The Lions finally unleased Gibbs and he showed why he was a first-round pick.
  • Goff had another OK game, with 272 yards and 1 Td and 1 pick. His QB rating was 89.0. Seems like he may be settling in closer to old Jared Goff then the new top-5 QB Jared Goff that we got for a while. The Sun God had 6 catches and 108 of those yards.
  • The defense wreaked havoc on the Raiders offense. They had 6 sacks, a pick, several passes defensed, and generated pressure on over 70% of Jimmy G's dropbacks. When they play like this (usually against bad teams) you can picture them going deep in the playoffs.

Former Packers

  • Davante Adams was out yarded by Michael Mayer (rookie TE), Jakobi Meyers (favored WR), Ameer Abdullah (62-year-old running back), Hunter Renfrow (he's still alive?), Austin Hooper (he's still alive?), and Josh Jacobs. What a horrific decision to force a trade to the Raiders of all teams.

Next Week

Lions have their bye.

Even with a Bagent, no Cousins, the Packers are, and will be the bottom-feeders.

At least the Bears are still the Bears.

If the Packers can't show improvement, they might have to rent them rather than risk a foreclosure. Maybe sign a lease for rent to own?

Vikings just got Josh Dobbs from Arizona, a pretty shrewd bargain-basement pick-up of a guy who has shown some moxie this season. Question is: can he pick up a new offense in time to really help salvage the Vikes' season (Nick Mullens will come off IR eventually) in an abysmally weak NFC? They also dealt former starting G Ezra Cleveland away apparently opening the way for Dalton Risner to play from here out.

(The ads on this site are wiping out my posts, so I'm saving and updating)

The Bears just dealt for Montz Sweat from Washington.

Well, that's the question, isn't it? Or traded away? (at this point, no one)

Several writers/pundits have argued players over picks and that the Packers should pony up draft capital for some proven guys (pass-catchers or OL) to help shore up the offense and allow for better growth and development of skill position guys.

Others pundits have said that further investing draft capital in this team was throwing good money after bad.

I'm not really surprised that this team has stood pat...especially after rewriting Gary's deal. I haven't seen an actual breakdown, yet, that says whether the deal opened more cap room in 2023 or whether they used some of the 2023 cap to keep some money from accruing on later caps.

34+ mil signing bonus next year is ok keeps getting steeper year to year when finally, it will have to be redone before his last season to make it doable. (I think I got this here yesterday so you can check back in the news and probably find it)

It seems that these big-money deals are always getting massaged and reworked.

Just saw that...Packers get the Bills' 3rd in 2024 and the Bills get Douglas and the Packers' 5th.

I can understand the trade but not sure how it is going to impact the players as it gives the indication that we are in rebuild. Also Packers are cursed with the 3 rounders not sure how that is going to work out next yr.

This makes no sense with Stokes on IR, and Alexander looking very gimpy on Sunday. Agree that this sends a bad message to the locker room. Bills got a hell of a player in my opinion, and Gute got taken to the cleaners. Sounds like the FO is shooting for the #1 overall next Spring. Good luck Rasual!
