Cory's Corner: Don't Discount Effort

The Packers get punched in the mouth at the hands of effort.

What the heck was that?

Effort wasn’t there. The body language looked dreadful. And the Saints destroyed the Packers 38-3 in a game that could’ve been much worse than that.

"We played bad,” said Aaron Rodgers, whose 36.8 rating was the second-worst quarterback rating of his career. “I played bad. Offensively we didn't execute very well. One game. We've got 16 to go."

You cannot sugar coat that, especially during Rodgers’ arm punt on third-and-eight. He overthrew Marquez Valdes-Scantling by a mile — it’s a good thing that Elgton Jenkins decided to bring his effort because it isn’t often that you see an offensive lineman make a tackle.

Effort is contagious. As soon as Rodgers was coming back this season, I guarantee you that most of the players thought they could just roll the balls on the field and expect to win.

Only problem is, you’re forgetting about that tiny word effort. So many people want to compare Rodgers to Tom Brady, but both aren’t even close. During COVID-19 last year, Brady was throwing to teammates at a Tampa park, while Rodgers in Hawaii with his fiance.

The reason Rodgers’ performance was so bad was because he had all offseason to prepare for this one game. I know there are philosophical differences in playing and sitting players in the preseason, but the Packers sat nearly 30 players each preseason game. I don’t care how competitive your practices are, if your first taste of real live game action is the season opener, that’s too late. And to make matters worse, every single one of those guys thought they could just put on the pads and bring home a win.

It doesn’t work like that. There are no shortcuts for effort. In an offseason where Rodgers did the bare minimum for an offseason program, the rest of the Packers followed suit right along with Rodgers. Remember, Rodgers is the team leader and the team mouthpiece. People put their trust in Rodgers because this is his 14th season as a starter. He’s a three-time MVP and a Super Bowl champ.

Rodgers is easy to trust.

Granted, an offensive line with two starting rookies makes things a little bit more questionable, but Rodgers looked like he was playing in the second preseason game — not the season opener.

“We came out here and dominated like we knew we could, like we knew we should,” said Saints safety Marcus Williams, who picked off Rodgers once.

Remember the sigh of relief and party atmosphere when Rodgers came back? Maybe the team kind of lost its way and this team forgot how to put the work in. Just because your name is Aaron Rodgers doesn’t mean that you don’t have to prepare and you don’t have to work.

The Packers know that they have a solid team. They were a final four team last year and came within a few yards of a Super Bowl berth. Just because you advanced that far doesn’t mean the work stops. On the other hand, the preparation only intensifies because you don’t just want to advance as far as last year, but get even deeper.

Maybe Rodgers won’t be here next year. But that has nothing to do with 2021. He needs to give his best effort each and every snap.

He shouldn’t do that just because he’s the quarterback. He should do that because he’s the leader. And effort is often imitated.

The entire team was flat from the opening kickoff and they continued to deflate from there. We heard from the coaches and even Gute that all these players were having great camps. Apparently all preseason hype as usual.

The team was not ready to play and since they are professionals there is no excuse for that and no excuses for the coaches to allow that to happen.

Yes, Rodgers did not play well but no one on the team played well either. This is a veteran team and they should be ready to play. Just a terrible, embarrassing performance by the entire organization.

They should be looking for redemption on Monday night. We’ll see if they are ready to earn it. Thanks, Since ‘61

They'll roll over Detroit and then get another ass whooping in San Fran. Nothing new here. Gute, Murph and Barry need to go. BTW who is responsible for hiring Barry, Gute? NFC N championship because it's become one of the crappiest divisions in the league. After that it's all downhill.

Murphy and Gute had nothing to do with hiring Joe Barry. LaFleur worked with Barry when both were with the Rams, and after some interviews, chose him. Gute brought in the players to go 13-3 two years in a row. Why would they fire him? The worst division is the NFC East (Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, Redskins). Sunday was a terrible effort on both sides of the ball, but only one game. I bet it gets corrected this week and Pack gets a needed win.

Well thought out 61’. I will add it starts with the leaders Rodgers and MLF and they didn’t lead very well. I for one, lost a bit of money because I really thought they would come out hungry, but I was so wrong. Disgusting showing.

Murf7777, I appreciate your feedback. I’m not a gambler but one thing I know is to never wager with your heart. Try games with teams that you don’t care about so you make an objective analysis of both teams.

It definitely starts with MLF and his coaching staff. Next is Rodgers on offense and ??? on defense. The Packers have not a defensive leader since Charles Woodson left. Be well.

Thanks, Since ‘61

ZSmith is our defensive leader, and was last year too. We also have a number of vets like Amos and Clark and Lowry and Alexander who can help.

I was cured of betting on Packer games when the Colts beat us 38-3 in 1997. Never again.

exactly. z smith is the leader. thats the problem. hes the leader. and hes upset about the fact that his contract is impossible to pay next year. he also is not a leader like ray lewis or chuck woodson or reggie white. hes not the kind of guy who is going to inspire them into winning a game when they are down by 21. Z is the guy who brought the music into practice when he came, he made everything fun, which is totally cool. but hes not the guy who holds people accountable. hes not the guy who makes everybody around him better. hes not the guy who shows up in the playoffs when it matters. z is fine. but hes not gonna turn the ship around when you are down 3 scores. and amos. if he was such a leader he wouldve called timeout during that nfc chamionship game when pettine gave that bullshit call before half to get kk burnt. amos said he thought it was a peculiar call. so?? if your the leader?? then change it!!! but he didnt change it. because hes not the leader. clark ive never even heard speak. lowry is a piece of shit blocking bag. who would listen to him? alexander is a futue hof player most likely. but hes just on his island focusing on doing his job.

I agree Since, but your review is on the point for 98% of starters. I saw Dillon and Jenkins, they both tried to get the best of them. I know that in 4th Q was garbage time, but Taylor, Randall, Hill and Amari, together with Jordan Love should be added to that 2 players. I also believe that MLF was lost, because there were no reason to give only 4 try to AJ. He was alone one who played well and moving sticks in Packers favor. 4.8 yards per carry!l

I just hope this beat-down wasn't due to AR having checked out. Hard to be a leader when your heart isn't into it and how can anyone go from saying he didn't want to play for GB again to somebody who will commit body, mind and soul to winning a championship for that same organization?

It should be clear after another month or so if that is what we are dealing with this year from Rodgers. At this point, an 0-3 start would not be shocking. Would be helpful to morale if they signed Adams this week to a reasonable number.

The Lions game will likely portend a difficult season for the Pack. If the offense comes out and takes care of business (at least 30 pts on the board and a strong 2d half) then the Pack can be considered a contender for the division title. If not, if MLF can't prepare his team to take on a hungry but mediocre Detroit team, then it's likely to be a really long season. On the bright side, the Pack's tied for the lead in the NFC North, the worst division in the league after game 1.

Division title is always the goal. You’re guaranteed in the playoffs and your first game is at home. If you win that, you get a chance to play for the title.

Some fans think it’s about winning the Super Bowl and forget that you have to make the playoffs first.

you know what i mean dude. and yes with rodgers last year, it IS about winning the super bowl. anything else will be a failure. at least to me, but some fans are okay with going all in and winning the shittiest division in football at 9 and 8. im not a player.. i dont have to focus on week to week. let me ask you this, how do you show up for week one with "Low energy"? ill tell you how. because they dont give a fuck. they are punching a clock. this group of guys wants to get paid and tweet and worry about their own shit. the saints wanted to play football and win one for new orleans. they dont have the right mindset. their leader was 50 50 on retiring and it fucking showed. as fans we worship these guys and he was busy hanging out in hawaii during mini camps and it showed. can they turn it around? i hope so. i hope im just a jackass on the internet who is all wrong about the packers. we will see. but yeah thanks for the insight. and by the way, the bucs won the super bowl, and they were a wild card. and they beat the packers at home. goal is super bowl. winning this fucking shit division doesnt mean a god damn thing.

Rodgers plays well when he has a chip on his shoulder like last year after they drafted Love. He was hell bent on showing them they were wrong. This year, no chip. Once he’s traded the chip will return to prove he was right. His zen, don’t worry be happy attitude was evident on Sunday. Could be in for a long season.

Most that post here know I'm what's called a "Homer". At times I let my love for the Green Bay Packers cloud my vision. For example I felt Meyers and Newman would do just fine, especially with run blocking on Sunday. I mean after all, one of the Saints starting DT's was Christian Ringo, a D-Lineman not deemed good enough to to make the D-Line starved Packers roster. Not only were they not up to par on the run blocking, the entire O-Line, veterans and rookies, weren't ready in any aspect of O-Line play and that's just one position group.

Personally I don't want to go through each person or position group because when the Punter is your one lone bright spot, you KNOW it's a shit show of EPIC proportions. But I'll say this, MLF didn't have his players ready to play. I have no idea how a professional sports franchise who claimed they missed their fans last year, and watched what, 30 thousand Packers fans spend hard earned money to SUPPORT their team, FAILED to support one another. Hell Rodgers couldn't even stand with his team after being pulled which has put a taste in my mouth I just can't shake. Standing 40 yards away when making $40 million and calling yourself the LEADER is UNACCEPTABLE!!

The Packers, players and coaches need to WATCH that tape from Sunday. They need to play the play by play tape through the loudspeakers at practice, in the weightroom, dining room, hallways, and EVERYWHERE a Packers player or coach can hear it.

I'll be watching closely Monday night when the Packers play the Lions. I will know everything I need to know about this team for the 2021 season by the end of that game. My hope is I see creativity in the play calling again. I see EFFORT from each and every player wearing Green and Yellow. I want to see MLF coaching and Joe Barry greeting his players as they come off the field after forcing a TO or a Sack on 3rd down. But mostly I want to see 12 acting like his IS the leader of this team. Sitting or standing WITH his guys, not 40 yards away.

Edit...WOW...Didn't mean to get so wordy...Sorry guys.

NP….I’m the same type of homer. I also stated that I was concerned about the OL due to starting two rookies and was down thumbed. The problem isn’t that maybe they are good enough to start, but more so the continuity of the entire line. A rookie center making calls for the rest of the line doesn’t help the continuity either. I just hope they can get better by the week and make it thru week 6 with a 4-2 record.

You essentially preempted my thoughts generally, on the responsibility of being the senior pro with respect to the attitudes in the run up to the game in addition to the definite responsibility of the coaches. It did cross my mind to wonder whether the position that Rodgers has put himself in limits LaFleur’s ability to influence him and, to a lesser extent, others.

The Packers packed three preseason games worth of first team reps as a unit into one regular season game.

I suggest they ditch this plan in the future.

Too old to practice? Or just to rich? This team is too fat. They were too slow. And were lazy. Guess it all pays the same whether you win or lose. I say they should be congratulated for blowing the Fans mind. MLF what are you thinking? Two rookies on the OL. And this Defense doesn't look any different then Capers. But lets follow the blueprint anyway. So blame Rodgers and King. Lets think like a GM. Time to get rid of TTs guys. The Cap is the only thing that matters now.

The two rookie OL did not lose the game. Myers was the 2nd highest graded by PFF behind Jenkins out of all players. Even Rodgers said the line held up. The problem was the team was not ready, and that is on LaFleur and the players. Thompson's guys that are left are Rodgers, Bakh, Clark, Cobb, Adams, and Crosby. What's your point? You couldn't think like a GM, and it shows. The game had nothing to do with the salary cap.

King does suck, but Myers and NEWMAN are and will be solid for the future. Bhaktiari taking the knee cap for six weeks will make for a bit of a learning curve for the rooks, but will make the line stronger in the end. Same rollover from the NFC CH Game. You cannot replace this dude. Where was the base offense and triple TE sets? LaFleur needs a focus session with the mirror. You want a play-action driven offense then jam the ball down their throats. If you want a flexible HB in DeGuara; do not play him as a FB. Get FB profile people on board 6-1,6-0 guys at 250-260 #s, enough of the flim flam bullshit. I hate the current NFL product.

Mike Webster is originally from the Rhinelander area. Go read his story.

The owners approved the rules changes along with the NFLPA, bargained over an open table and agreed to by a majority of owners and players.

JB, you are so wrong about the NFL going downward. Sure it isn’t the same physical game, but ratings are very high and not dropping. I’m still glued to the TV every Sunday and enjoy it as most people are. Fantasy and gambling has only made it stronger. I think it’s human nature to resist change, but if I’ve learned anything in life it’s important to accept change, rather than fight it. It’s true in many aspects in life because change is something we deal with constantly throughout everything we do.

Years ago, both '61 and myself ranted about the lost of training camp due to clear slippage of QB play throughout the league. Today the league is dominated by offensive play with defense's usually behind. So JB does have a point here. The first month is plain bad football by any metric. The league and players could have easily kept the past TC with the cut down on pads and limited hitting. It's hard to developed skill players (or any player) unless a team has the time to do it. The NFLPA contract has taken that away, and it shows up in the first half of the season with a diminished product. And more players are put in danger by being not ready to play in a vicious contact sport. There's a reason why the age of the players are getting younger all the time. At some point, this will catch up with the league as a whole. Most likely, sooner than the league expects.

Let me preface my comment by stating that I should have chosen "OldFart" rather than "CheesyTex" for a moniker.

With you 100%, Johnblood 27.

I absolutely loved football throughout the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Played as a kid and watched the hometown favorite Browns dominate the old AAFC and then into the NFL in 1950.

After that, I began to be annoyed when games would be halted for TV timeouts -- just unfair momentum breakers is how I saw it. But I now realize that football in the NFL was beginning a transition from primarily a sports event to primarily an entertainment event. Driven, of course, by $.

Fully agree with the need to always focus on player safety, especially via better equipment, training, and penalties for unsafe play. But the "Pussy" rules drive me crazy -- e.g., the roughing the passer on Z in Game 1 when he clearly eased up, tackled according to the "Pussy" rule guidelines, yet still was penalized.,

Even more than the NFLPA, I'm put off by individual players who will not live up to their contract. WTF?

Rather than RIP Football, give H.S. football a try if it's available to you.

The Packers need to watch the tape, not burn it. The receivers need to look at the Saints receivers and see how they got open. And the DBs need to see how The Saints DBs shut down the GB receivers.

As for effort, #52 and #74 brought it all game. #23 must have also, as he was rarely on screen.

i really dis agree with the arguement the effort wasnt there. I tried to pick up a vw beetle the other day, gave it my all and realized, I will never be able to do it because its beyond my strength and ABILITIES.
Effort has nothing to do with the loss.
First. As I told my wife watching mr rodgers bench sit, you cant score TD's while your on the bench and your d is giving up not one but two 15 yard drives in a row.
This entire d is god awful because they did nothing to beef it up. Your best pass rusher has a bad back, Gary makes one or two plays a game but thats all, your linebackers are slow and lack quickness and mobility, and King and others, dont want to go there.
This author mistakes effort for lack of any talent to stop the other team.

By the time Rodgers and compay got on the field it had to be, wow we need to clean up this mess and score points? The offence right now cant be too dam happy about the defensvie lack of talent and abilities shown.

Perfect summation Ima. It wasn't effort it was a lack of talent. DL has one good player in Clark. Lowry and Lancaster wouldn't start for 90% of the teams in the league. Gary is a tease Keke all hype. ILBs are possibly the worst in football.

And unless Stokes quickly turns into a star, there is only one NFL-worthy CB in Jaire. It's terrifying to think what Tampa Bay, with 3 great receivers and Gronk, or any playoff team with even two like Seattle with Metcalf and Lockett, will do to the Packers.

Add in a DC with the worst resume in the league. What were they thinking?

The Packers will make the playoffs because of the offense, although Lazard and MVS were exposed again as average to below when it comes to getting open quickly. But unless Gute finds a way to make major changes mid-season, there is little to no chance this is a SB team.

Something was lacking for sure. And it started with the head coach and Def coordinator. Lousy game plan and play calling. And the defense showed little aggressiveness.

There are specific things that can be done. And the first thing is cut King. Every game, the opponent will try to beat King on the same long throw. The next time it happens it may not be after the game is out of hand.

And Something has Tobe done with the defensive line. Fix it now rather than wait till the end of the season

While most of the comments are valid, one thing to remember is the Packers weren't playing St. Norbert College. The Saints are a veteran team and Sean Payton is a great coach. This was no pushover but it's the degree of ineptitude that is shocking. A 30-27 loss wouldn't have raised that many eyebrows.

While it's clear Joe Barry's defense stinks, the offense's inability to put together anything resembling a consistent plan is what put the defense back on the field quickly and they wore down in the heat.

The game plan against the Packers will be copied many times this year.

I said that the Packers would be fortunate to win 10 games this year. I've revised that down to 8. If they don't play any better Monday night they will lose to the Lions.

Sweep 🧹 Rodgers, Davante, Lowery, King, Lancaster, Patrick, Sullivan, P. Smith out the door at seasons end.

Get what you can for Rodgers and use the capital to draft a receiver and Defense.

Getting rid of that group should fix the cap for a mini rebuild.

The offense around Love should be run heavy and he will play within the structure of MLF offense, something Mr Man bun doesn’t like to do.

This is going to be a long season, I have no expectations of going to the Super Bowl with this uninspired group.

This was simply just a bad game. I don't know how else to put it.

The one thing I would have liked to have seen though is if they could have gained some momentum after the interception that was taken away. Not saying they would have won, but that is the type of play that can turn a game around and change the look of it. Plays like that can just create a spark. I would have like to have seen if that would have happened.

It really does seem to come down to Aaron Rodgers setting the tone for the Packers.
If he is working for the team with a good heart, we can recover from this opening fiasco.
If not, we're in big trouble.
***
The thing that troubles me is that when Rodgers came back in July, he didn't exactly rally the Packers around him for a resounding run to the Super Bowl.
Instead, he trashed the front office as being cold and calculating to the players. Plus, he showed little real enthusiasm for leading the Packers to a title.
Maybe there was more substance behind the scenes, maybe not.
***
What kind of a leader holds out on his teammates and fans when there is a championship on the line, anyway? He'd better have a righteous reason, right? It might help if in his absence he was known to be suffering for the noble cause to which he was so committed, instead of hosting Jeopardy and vacationing in the tropics.
If Aaron Rodgers has come back from his self-imposed exile without a compelling grievance, and without any hint of remorse or regret for his self-absorption, these are signs that he's not in a good place personally to be the man for the Packers.
***
Aaron Rodgers is a mystery. We don't know what's going on inside of him, and how he relates to coaches and players.
If Gute and LaFleur think he has come back to the Packers as a truly positive force, then perhaps they go with him this season through thick and thin, confident that it will all work out in the end for a satisfying season.
However, if our general manager and head coach think Rodgers is basically arrogant and stubborn and subversive and out-of-touch with reality, then it's best to be rid of him as soon as possible.
I wonder if the two of them have more or less had to swallow their dignity to appease Rodgers over and over and over again behind the scenes. It may be worth doing so for the good of the team, though I'm not so sure. It's intolerable, though, if Rodgers is dragging down the team as a distraction of discontentedness.
I hope Gute and LaFleur evaluate the situation with Rodgers properly, and have the courage of their convictions to either go with him or let him go.

Do you know what was the main objection on Rodgers from scouts in that 2005 draft? They claimed he is arrogant. That characteristic made most teams to avoid him. What we saw this offseason was purely show of arrogance...

He, sitting 40 yards away with grim smile on his face can tell you a lot if you want to be honest to yourself.

I have seen it before. When a team can play two safety deep and still stop the run, then our offense struggles. It even dates back to MM. Rodgers does not like the short quick pass. He can do it but he just doesn’t seem to like it and often ignores that option. Our offensive line and scheme seems to be better suited to pass pro. When Matt mentioned that the fault on offense was the inability to run the ball, he was spot on.

Setting aside other concerns, if Rodgers isn't all in with LaFleur's system of offense by this the third season together, the Packers are in big trouble just in that sense.
If our head coach is continually having to rein in our quarterback from going off script, then it seems the director should ask for another lead actor.
This could go back to what may have happened at the end of the NFC Championship Game against the Bucs, as to whether Rodgers was for the most part cooperating with LaFleur in the play calling or overly resistant.
***
One could even say that it's understandable if Rodgers doesn't want to change his ways this late in his career -- although the revival of his career under LaFleur would seem to be something to truly appreciate and take into account.
Still, Rodgers may not feel comfortable handing off the ball as often as he is being asked, and taking the short passes in the prescribed ratio to the long. It may be considered to be ultimately stifling to his creativity as a quarterback, and inhibiting to his performance.
In that case, let's help Rodgers find a team more suited to his preferred mode of operation, in a way that he and the Packers can both be happier.
***
If Rodgers is not a good fit for the LaFleur offense -- and then adding in the melodrama off the field -- the Packers are in huge trouble.
So much trouble, indeed, that it's better to trade him right now for perhaps a first-round pick and a quality defender. Get as much as we can, but get it done.
I can take a bad loss if there's real hope of righting the team in good time; but if there are major contradictions with Rodgers and the Packers, why prolong the misery?
Move on as of right now.

Swisch: Good points and too bad the fans will not know the truth. I would like to think that Rodgers wants to win and get another Super Bowl ring. How do we know when he calls off the run for his chance for a long pass? We have reached a point where the coach can not run the team as he wants. LaFleur is afraid to confront Aaron after the offseason mess. I think some of these points will be answered after the Lions game.

If his attitude is to work his ass off day in and day out and show by example he is there to win the title than they have a chance. But, if he just goes thru the days without positive communication, just going through the motions collecting his check, we are in big trouble. You can’t Zen your way to a title.

Until/If/when Rodgers gets demoted from OC to QB and respects the plays that are sent into the speakers inside his helmet, this is the product we will get. He bought in a good portion of last year and it played out well. Changing plays, snapping the ball at zero, holding the ball for what seems like months, missing every check down, then launching something deep and dumb along with his snide, elitist attitude will become toxic and spread like creeping Charlie throughout the entire locker room.

When the QB changes the play consistently and makes great plays, you find it hard to stop him. But went the QB changes the play consistently and does nothing then you need to tell him to cut it the hell out. How long does someone like Rogers get before anyone would dare tell him that is hard to calculate.

"How long does someone like Rogers get before anyone would dare tell him that is hard to calculate."

That is the point. His attitude shows he has no respect for the coaches, his teammates or the organization (the last he said publicly!).

Does not matter how many of you hates Mike Murphy, I believe he will trade Aaron Rodgers if he continues to produce that "I'm the greatest person and player ever" very soon.

I know that I really loved how Aaron played from 2009 to 2014. After that he is showing decline in his abilities, but pointing fingers at others as the guilty ones for his own mistakes. In 2019 and partially in 2020 main culprit was MVS. Everybody was talking how many times he drops passes or not catching them. If you want to be honest 50% of his non-catch or drops were balls overthrown or underthrown to him.

I agreed with Packers decision to fire Mike McCarthy. He was and is good coach, but his time with Packers was to long and everything stales. But kudos to him, he never ever publicly thrown under the bus any of his players, or any part of organization he was hired by. Only time when he publicly showed some negativity was when Mike Murphy and Brian Gutekunst decided to fire him during the season. And do not forgot - Aaron Rodgers is that good player thanks to Mike McCarthy who taught him how to play QB. Intelligent, as Aaron is, he brought himself to the top at the position. He was teachable at the time. Once he came to the top he started to show his arrogance, what exploded this offseason. We never ever hear from Aaron any words of thanks to Mike McCarthy for his support and guidance.

Unfortunately it turned around that we really saw Aaron's personality in the worst way.

Every year I don't think so, but certainly more than the only title he has won. The point, however, is another! Management has never given the team a noteworthy defense (sadly it doesn't even look like this season) and that made Rodgers what he is now! In fact he was led to think that he was always the only savior of the team (and he has been until today !!) but this created problems in his way of playing although he has never seen anyone play as he did for a long time. weather. And let's go back to the starting point .... also on Sunday evening we saw that this team cannot lean on the D, but must always take refuge on AR and hope that it goes well ..... and then everyone to say that it is only the fault of AR

What Bart Starr did that no one else has is win 3 championships in a row, and 5 championships in 7 years.
Overall, Starr was 9-1 in the playoffs with excellent personal statistics. He lost his first one, then never lost another.
People can compare eras in football, but there's so many factors that it's hard to say whether winning championships was more difficult in one era than another.
Thing is, no one did before the days of Starr; no one did during the days of Starr; and no one has done it since.
Coach Lombardi helped Starr immensely; but Starr may have done almost as much to help Lombardi. They were a great match.
With our concerns about whether a quarterback is truly coachable, we can consider how important it was to Lombardi to have like Starr running the show on the field so much in cooperation with him. Starr called his own plays, but Lombardi could trust him to do so according to their common vision for the offense.
It seems there's much more to being a great quarterback than passing. There are so many little things that are easy to overlook. There's also attitude and leadership.
Starr developed himself into a superior passer, while mastering all of the other aspects of the position. He was the complete quarterback, and the greatest of all time.
***
Tom Brady has also been great, apparently much like Starr, maybe the second best ever behind Starr.
He has to answer for Deflategate, though. It seems there never was a real investigation, and that perhaps Brady was even obstructing one.
If he didn't need the deflated football to help his passing, why did he apparently have the footballs deflated? If he didn't fully support an investigation, why not?
There's also the matter of Spygate.
Even if Brady is cleared in these two incidents, he would still not quite have had a career equal to Starr.
***
As for Aaron Rodgers, up until very recently I looked much more at what he had accomplished as far as winning with the Packers instead of where the team had fallen short. I tended to think Rodgers had generally taken the Packers as far as they could go.
As questions about his coachability have arisen, I've been more questioning, though.
Then with the cheap stunts pulled by Rodgers this offseason -- holding out, trashing the front office, and flaunting his latest MVP -- I'm now a skeptic.
I'm seriously wondering if Rodgers has left one or more Super Bowls on the table over the years due to deficiencies of attitude. (Also, I wonder if he keeps his composure well against the toughest of defenses -- the kind of defenses that tend to arise in the biggest of games.)
Then there's the matter of Rodgers seeming to throw away an opportunity for a Super Bowl this season at the expense of teammates and fans.
It may be somewhat like him perhaps overlooking open receivers over the years, then throwing the ball out of bounds.
Maybe there has been more there for Rodgers to work with than we first supposed.

I don't think it's possible to have a GOAT in football. You can have a Greatest Pre-war Era, Greatest Post-War Ironman Era, Greatest Early Modern (to about 1980) Era, etc. The rules have changed so much over time that 60s ball does not resemble at all 90s ball, which does not really relate to modern day ball.

Rodgers has the skills to be Greatest Modern Era QB, but lacks the leadership skills needed to be GOAT of the Era. That does go to (*vomiting in my mouth*) Brady.

You seem to be on target about rating players from different eras, jurp.
It's a fun exercise of comparison across time, although quite difficult, if not impossible.
One example is that Brady has played in an era in which the quarterback is much more protected, sometimes to a fault.
It seems that in the 1960s the likes of Deacon Jones were mauling quarterbacks in ways that would seem like carnage today.
One thing that transcends eras, though, is attention to detail, along with savvy and grit and humility and determination to get any team title that is within reach.
***
I do like to defend Bart Starr because so many analysts extol winning as the main thing in evaluating a player's career, then minimize the career of Starr because he wasn't a spectacular passer to the degree of a Johnny Unitas or Sonny Jurgensen.
They dismiss Starr by saying that he had Lombardi as his coach, and lots of hall-of-fame teammates.
It doesn't seem to occur to the experts to consider how much of a role Starr had in quietly elevating the play of those around him season after season, with steely steadiness to go along with underappreciated talent.
They also seem to largely disregard all of the aspects of quarterbacking other than passing that go into greatness.
The Colts had great teams throughout the Sixties, but no titles. The Browns and Cowboys and Lions and Bears, oh my, also put up some formidable competition in that decade, but had nowhere near the success of the Packers.
Nice guys are indeed winners, especially when they show a fierce effort at attaining excellence. My Dobie, Max, is a wonderfully sweet dog, but I wouldn't mess with him.
If it's really mostly about winning, or at least leading a team to its fullest potential, look at Bart Starr throughout his career (especially before he was apparently crippled to a large extent by all of the abuse he suffered from largely unrestrained defenses), and especially in the biggest of games.
There's no way to actually prove he is the best quarterback of all time -- and I'm glad for other opinions -- but in all sincerity I'd put him first in my book.

The truth is often found somewhere in the middle. The hard part is determining what measures constitute an accurate zero through ten benchmark to accurately calculate your math. Other than the perennial drought resistant bottom feeders (Jets, Jags), trying to find the common denominator between talent and “something else” has many moving parts. Like science, sports, marriages, health, and life in general, the variables have limitless boundaries. To answer your question, there’s not enough data. If you have talent, you have talent. If you have nothing else, you have nothing else. The answer is between zero and ten. What trumps what? The bourbon I’m drinking of course. Cheers.

In football I feel that in general ALL of these guys are super talented. I mean sure some standouts like Rodgers, McCaffrey, Kelce are out there but in general they are all crazy talented and crazy well trained.

The margin of victory in the NFL is tiny. Miss a play here or there and the worst team in the NFL can beat the best team in the NFL. Play badly and you lose 38 - 3. Lose every game 38 - 3 and you need better players. Lose one game that way just means you weren't ready that day.

The 2019 Packers lost by 15 to the Chargers and by 29 to the 49ers. Around those losses they won their other 12 games played. They didn't lose that badly because they weren't talented. They weren't ready. Their plan was bad. Some combo of both. Who knows maybe they were cursed by a passing gypsy driving to the stadium. But no team in the NFL is 35 points more talented than any other NFL team.

I flew from South Dakota for the game expecting a professional display of football—-but watched instead, what appeared to be purposeful attempt to humiliate their fan base; on a neutral field, where we outnumbered the Saints fans by 5-1.
I/we endured a clown show—53 clowns who make more money combined than than our National economy, humiliating their, faithful, honorable, incomparable fan base.

The organization is all about we're icharge. AR you just work for us over and over. So Murph, Gute, Flower man and Jo Barry it's all on you. All four of you guys need to go, starting with Murph, Gute. Barry and Flowers. They set the bar at the NFC N champs, whoopee.
