Cory's Corner: Sign The Man!

It's time to lock up Jordan Love long term after feasting on the Lions.

The Packers have waited long enough.

Sign the man!

I will admit, I wasn’t totally sure heading into this season. Heck, I wasn’t totally sure after Week 5 when the Packers were staring at a 2-3 record, fresh off an embarrassing loss to the Raiders.

Sign the man!

After swallowing two more losses to the Broncos and Vikings, something happened. He had his highest completion percentage in a win over the Rams by carving up that secondary 77 percent of the time. And even in a loss to the Steelers, we saw flashes of light despite throwing two picks.

Sign the man!

But then he turned a corner. I realize that throwing for 300 yards doesn’t have as much panache as it once did, but here he is in his first full season as a starting quarterback he doesn’t just throw for a career-high 322 yards, but he goes 5-for-7 on third down as the Packers beat the Chargers.

Sign the man!

Then there is the Thanksgiving game. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around, teams know who they are. It’s Week 12 and usually teams know if they have a real shot at the playoffs, a division title or a Super Bowl title. In their way was the Lions — a team that has a realistic shot of checking off all three of those boxes. It was the first time the Lions were 8-2 since 1962 and Detroit was ablaze with excitement and rebirth. Just as things begin to dwindle and die thanks to the harshness of winter, the Lions have begun to blossom into something that looks like a real football team.

Sign the man!

Then he threw a 53-yard pass to Christian Watson on the very first play and Ford Field became a cemetery. The Lions were left for dead and Love completed his first four passes, in fact, he only had five incompletions in the first half. He made off-platform throws, sidearm throws, tight window throws and sideline throws. He was doing it all and most importantly, he neutralized Aidan Hutchinson — who came into the game with 43 quarterback hurries.

Sign the man!

The best part was he did it on a national stage. We have had a front row seat to his foibles and growing pains, but the nation just saw him claw and tear apart one of the better teams in the NFC. Granted, I still think that the Lions will win the division but this win proved that the Packers are a lot closer than many people think.

Sign the man!

All of those things are fantastic. But he was 8 of 12 on throws of 10-to-20-plus yards. That’s what really made me raise my eyebrows. He has been repeatedly ripped, even by me, for his lack of arm strength, but he found a way to make it work. And you can bet that Packers coach Matt LaFleur is going to be calling more play-action because he was 10-for-13 when running the play-action.

“It’s given us a lot of confidence to be a little bit more aggressive with some of the calls,” said LaFleur.

Sign the man!

It’s time Packers. I’ve seen enough.

Sign Jordan Love.

I agree Cory. He has been as consistent as any young QB can be, and he’s done it with a rag-tag set of receivers and OL components.
It also removes the potential spending of their first-round pick on a QB. Up to this game, I thought it was still a possibility, but now, if a quality QB is available, I’d try to trade the pick.

I'd go with young and inexperienced receivers over rag-tag, but that's just me. Your assessment of the o-line is correct, though.

Well, IMO Lazard, Cobb, Watkins, Tonyan, Big Dog, and rookies Watson, Doubs would be classified as a rag-tag group playing for Rodgers.

Watson, Doubs, Wicks, Heath, Musgrave, and Kraft would be classified as talented, young and inexperienced and they aren't going anywhere. And all have promising upside to grow with their new QB.

The passing offense has promise but is not yet proven. Let's give the young group this year and next to seal the deal and have good indication Love is the wise long term investment.

The only concern is if Love turns into #12 and begins a tirade of demands. But I do not see that.

Add #11 Reed to that list. In fact, put him as the #1 WR, he's open so often.

I have faith in all 8 WRs, and we just might need that depth. Right now I think it's a good idea to concentrate on fewer targets to increase that completion %. Reed Musgrave and Wicks it was, can Kraft take over? I want to see it happen, and hopefully Wicks returns 100% for KC.

#18 Heath with 4 for 4, and good blocking tho ... #9 changing the game like we've known he can, and Doubs continues to make plays. "Champagne problems?" Hopefully we get some DBs back ...

Reed is a spark plug play-maker. Our WR crop in totality will rival any in the NFL within the next couple years. Our OL has been good at pass blocking. We need a lot more strength on the OL in the run game, so either they are going to have to put the work in this offseason or draft high caliber run game OL beasts. Love is missing the benefit of a solid run game and has caused us to slip earlier this season. We need to be able to win either way and we also need a better RB duo for next season...and the future. I liked Kraft a lot and believe he may eventually surpass Musgrave. Top priority is trenches on OL run game and DL run defense. RB and DB's next. Another good TE. We should have the draft picks to accomplish it all and maybe a little CAP space for FA's. Love will get better faster when he doesn't have to be perfect to win.

PEO,

I wouldn't say JL has been consistent. He's still missing easy layups, and not leading his targets; and neither of those mistakes are consistent.

And yet from the first time I saw him take over at TC it was perfectly obvious that he's in control of this offense and commands the respect of the team. He never did anything to lose that, even in 6 losses.

Definitely continue to build the team around him rather than tear it all down by trying to find an upgrade in the draft. Take BPA with all those high picks, which are dropping. And that's a good thing!

Yes, it is time. Thursday's performance was no fluke. We've seen him build up to it. You didn't even mention his best play, which was the TD pass to Jayden Reed, where he threaded the needle between the defenders.

Deep ball accuracy is his only major weakness. The fact that almost all of them are underthrown gives me hope that he just needs to make an adjustment. That one to Watson on the first play was underthrown, but not by a lot. In fact, I would say that it was a decent throw. Watson had a much better chance to go up and get it than the defenders did, and that's what you want.

That TD throw to #11 was INSANE!! Those two are SO connected, and that was really proven in that 2 point conversion completion back in week 4.

If he hit #9 in stride on that opening play it was a TD. JL10 can overthrow #9 and has. I think he's just not used to his speed, neither does he adjust when D slows down his targets.

I agree. I think the deep throw issues are due to some hesitation. He is starting to react faster in general and the longer throws will come as it becomes second nature to him as he continues to build confidence.

"The Packers have waited long enough.
Sign the man!"

Whoa, whoa, WHOA there Cory, just WHY do the Packers need to throw a huge as bag of money at this kid this moment? Because he's looked better the last 4 games, and really good the last TWO.

Sorry, just not there yet. The throw to Reed for the TD was insane, the throw to Christian Watson on the first play of the game was NOT. The throws over 20 yards to Luke Musgrave all season before he was hurt were NOT. Yes, he's made some beautiful throws, and yes, he's made HUGE strides in the right direction IMO, and YES, I'm way more stoked about this Packers team NOW, than I was 4 weeks ago. But the Packers have TIME.

The NY Giants gave Daniel Jones a big bag of money and now are SCREWED. The Packers gave Aaron Rodgers a ridiculous contract two years ago and are paying $40,313,568 NOT to play in GB this season. That was 17.78% of their cap. WHY are people so hell bent on giving away the bag for a few good days at the office?

Like most, I think I'm the BIGGEST Packers fan of ALL. I want all the best players for the Packers and would like nothing more than to KNOW the Packers have their guy. But I DON'T know that and I'll bet Gute and Murphy probably aren't 100% either. Until June of 2025 those two are going to be here. I just think there's time. The LAST thing the Packers need is a "Daniel Jones Situation" on their hands. The Packers have time.

Can we at LEAST see him hit Watson 60 yards downfield in stride just ONCE before hearing this again?

Nick, I don't think Cory (or I) is saying "Throw all the dollars at JL!"
But I think that trying to work out a long-term contract NOW will make it a better contract for the Packers. As time passes, those contract dollars just go up. Now, if Love's agent wants the moon, then yeah, the signing is delayed. But I'm convinced Love can be a Super-Bowl-winning QB. I've compared him, from the beginning, to Dak Prescott, and I still see that today. I don't think he'll be everything Rodgers was, or Favre, or Manning, etc. But I think he can win a Super Bowl, and maybe be better at leading the Packers to Super Bowls than an interception machine like Favre or an egomaniac, cap-destroyer like Rodgers.
Favre was the gunslinger, Rodgers was the assassin, maybe Love is the Captain America.

I'm not ready to pronounce JL10 a SB win we yet. Perfectly fine to be the franchise QB at least until 2025? Yes.

SO much development yet to take place! With most of that being reasonable coaching of the O line.

Thank you for the reality check NP. The Packers have played 11 games this year and Love has played well in about half of them including the last four. Thats a good start, but not worthy of a long contract yet. Thank heaven Cory is not the GM of the Packers. Let's let the season play out and garner a little more information before any big decisions are made.

not quite there yet, on his way but give it more time. Bak was handed huge contract now he is never going to play for GB again the way it looks. Wait until you are able to free up money in spring JA looks like a spring cut don't sign Stokes either. Need a real hitter at safety and maybe another more active LB to go along with Walker. Campbell I think is gone too. Get rid of that stiff kicker Carlson wow talk about a disappearing act extra point are a nightmare.

NP, I really don’t quite follow your 60 yards train of thought. If a guy can throw over 50 yards in the air that’s pretty good. The longest NFL passes have gone around 70, but they were Hail Mary type wind up and hope throws. I think this is asking too much and unrealistic.

That said, I also came here to opine that the time isn’t right to unlock the safe yet. I was impressed by Love last week, and I accept that he’s been trending up, but no single elite game makes a player.

I want to see more, against better defenses, but mostly consistency before we fully commit. It’s looking ever more possible, but this is a decision that will have long term implications. We can wait a while before locking him and us in long term. Too small a sample at this point.

I think Nick was being facetious with 60 yards. The point is he doesn't hit the deep ball in stride often, and not at all yet with #9 this season. I'm more concerned with missing the easy layups, myself. To exploit the TEs, and Dillon who's catching everything, those high probability plays HAVE to be there, and can win games. This is the way to win the TOS battle, help our D, and score more consistently.

While I predict all this is well within JL10's ability, we simply haven't SEEN it yet. And the first time we see that flash? That's not consistency, either.

Give it time.

Maybe this winter he'll have ALL his WRs and TEs out to Cali so they can practice it and REALLY start to it get down!

The comparison is not Aaron Rodgers' contract in 2022, it's Aaron Rodgers' contract during the 2008 season, which was his fourth season and his first as a starter, just like Jordan Love. The Packers signed Rodgers to the new contract on Halloween. I think that Jordan Love has been behind Rodgers in his development all along, but he is making a surge now, and it does not look fluky. He is building on the skills and the poise that we've seen him developing over the past few years. When you factor in the extremely young pass catchers that Love has had to work with, along with a shaky offensive line and a chaotic situation at RB, he may be very close indeed to where Rodgers was at this point in his career.

I don't think Love has the physical talent to be quite as good as Rodgers, but he could still be one of the best QBs in the league. I say, let's lock him up now if possible. You can bet that some other teams will have their eye on him if that doesn't happen, and then his price will go up.

It's odd that in this thread, I am the only one who's even mentioned the Rodgers 2008 comparison, which is the obvious point of reference. Cory didn't mention it either. I did a google search and found an article in Sports Illustrated that compares Love's and Rodgers' stats for the first 11 games. Here they are:

Jordan Love: 225-of-372 passing (60.5 percent), 2,599 yards, 19 touchdowns vs. 10 interceptions, 87.4 rating.

Aaron Rodgers: 228-of-359 passing (63.5 percent), 2,599 yards, 17 touchdowns vs. nine interceptions, 90.5 rating.

That's pretty darn close, and when you think of all the dropped passes, wrong routes run, and other issues this year, I think it's pretty clear that Jordan Love is playing about as well so far as Aaron Rodgers did during his first year as a starter. So did all of you folks think the Packers were insane for giving Rodgers that new contract halfway through the 2008 season? I don't remember many people complaining about it, but I could be wrong.

GB made Aaron Rodgers the fourth highest paid QB in the NFL after 7 games in 2008. The fourth highest paid QB today is Jalen Hurts with a 5-year deal at $51M AAV and $110M fully guaranteed plus another $70M partially guaranteed.

Yeah, not those numbers for Love at this point. Nick rightly mentioned Daniel Jones but he's the 12th highest paid QB at $40M AAV with $81M fully guaranteed over four years.

I agree with PEO that signing him sooner could save some money, but IDK, it is going to be a lot of money even signing him early. I don't think he would sign for Geno Smith or Garoppolo money.

To be honest, I have not seen enough for nearly long enough to be comfortable settling on any specific numbers.

agreed. I see no pressure to try to upgrade QB in the draft, neither is there time pressure to sign JL long term NOW. I think the thought process is right now he can be signed cheaply, as compared to his value only going up.

Staking my position from the start, I'm in "soon, but not now, camp".

In fairness Nick, at this stage, it's really a 60:40 split on his decision making that we should be evaluating (and getting excited about).

His field reading and decision making was the real standout of the Lions match - followed by his increasing respect for possession of the ball (" my guy or no guy").

Sure, he's got a LOT of work to do this off season on his mechanics (according to JT O'Sullivan at the QB School and Dusty's posts here), but from what he's flashed, the mechanics flaws are correctable - it's the cerebral elements that they either have (or do not).

Also, whenever he gets signed, I don't think that there's going to be any home-town discount given anyway - it never was for Rodgers - so I totally agree with Gute making sure before he saddles the Packers with debt......... as an afterthought, if\when it's clear that he is "the guy", why not do a KC and lock him up for a long term contract (> 5 years).

On the topic of contracts - I do want to see the Bakhtiari contract somehow revisited - the 2024 $40M cap number is untenable, and even the ~$20M dead cap is bad. I'd really like to see him activated late in the year and played once (somehow....if able)..... this would at least give the FO faith that he has something left in the tank worth negotiating over.

I can't remember who it was, but at the time of his last extension someone here posted that it was too large a guaranteed number for a player his age and position, and that the Packers would regret it...... FYI, he's counted for nearly 80 MILLION DOLLARS since the injury in late 2020 and the Packers have hardly got a snap out of him. I get it, injuries are tough, but hopefully the high guaranteed money lessons have been learned by the FO (it's looking like they have the nucleus of a good young team here [that are going to need contracts soon], I don't think that they need to be held to ransom by any one player again.

Postscript - is anyone else reading the furor going on at the Jets re the failure of signing Rodgers' "posse"? Lazard and Cobb are benched, Billy Turner is now Billy Turnstile and Nathaniel Hackett is about to get booted. The Lazard $40M\4yr deal is looking egregious (at best).

Nick, I agree with you that it is to early to sign any kind of extension. Well, he has contract through 2023 and 2024, so Packers have enough time after the season and detail evaluation to decide.

But, regarding that deep shot to Watson at the beginning of the game, go and watch again. Packers had ball on 25 and Jordan Love have 7 steps back so at least 7 yards back from line of scrimmage. Ball was caught om 25 yards line of Lions. That is not 50 yards ball - that is throw was 57 yards long and Jordan had player running to him just at the moment he was to launch the ball. By time he will be able to throw the ball completely calm, despite pressure that will be going towartds him.

This 57 yards I was calculating from the point where Jordan launch the ball to the point where Watson catch it. Officialy that is 53 yards throw, because they are calculating from the line of scrimmage to the point where WR (or catcher) was tackled.

Regarding Daniel Jones and a big bag of money he received last off season, that was suspicious decision by Giants, as Daniel Jones did never show the poise and throws Jordan Love already executing. If you are reading statistics about "precision" of the QBs, you have to have in your mind that there is incompletes for many QBs that are more on receivers than on QBs (either by running wrong routes or just not catch very catchable passes). So, I'll say 65%+ is something that very good QBs have. Look at the Herbert stats from this season and tell me that he is bust, looking just at statistic data...

You know that I believe Jordan Love is the Packers future, but I might be wrong. Everything what we saw till today shows that he is progressing fast in the right direction.

Again, there is no rush to signing any extension yet. And I also believe Jordan is not asking that at the moment. What is mind boggling fact that after 11 games in the book stats are almost same as it was 2008, when FPQB was in his 1st season as starter - both have 5-6 record, 2599 passing yards, 21 TD (JL 19+2, FPQB 17+4), Jordan Love has 10 INT and FPQB had 9 INT. Can you imagine that they have exactly the same amount of passing yards? Mind boggling!

He's locked up through next season. The body of work isn't yet sufficient for the Packers to make the commitment to him and the implications a long-term QB1 deal entails cap-wise. There's a lot of football to be played and a lot of potential career-altering injury opportunities to be considered.

Jordan Love has the same agent as AR, and if he's doing his job, he's going to make sure the market, not the Packers alone, set the price for his services over the next several years. I'm guessing if Jordan Love is half as smart as we hope he is, he knows this.

Signing him up for the long run at this point is like the guy in a rush to marry the first woman he beds.

I understand that offering him a bigger contract right now would save us money later... but I think it would be wiser to see how the season plays out before offering to renegotiate his current contract and offer up the bucks.
Don't get me wrong, I am in the kid's corner big time... but I'm a Packer fan first and we really need to get this right. If he continues on this line, then we lock him up long term.... if not, we keep him as is until we can find better.

And enough to begin making decisions about the makeup of this team and coaching in anticipation of next year's draft. Playoff experience will be a big step. I say to Nitschke, Nick, and ‘61—my sentiments too.
Love is certainly trending up, but I also witnessed his games against Desmond Ridder, Kenny Pickett, the Broncos and the Raiders. If he had played even better than average, those were games we should have won. If I recall, we couldn’t score any points in the first quarter/halves.
Love is improving and has more winnable games in front of him, let’s see if continues his success. We’re all hoping that will happen.

I agree with Nick Perry. The Packers have time. There is no need to rush in and sign Love to a long term deal yet. Let him keep playing. Let's see how the rest of this season goes at least. The Daniel Jones example is excellent. Don't rush in.

Love is improving and this season's Packer schedule has been perfect for a first year QB to learn and grow in the game. What we need to see now is consistency on weekly basis. The upcoming Chiefs game will be a good measuring stick for Love's progress and the entire team's progress this season. Take it one game at a time and let this season play out. The Packers have time, that's the key.

Another factor is that the Packers will not yet be out of salary cap hell in 2024. They need to get the cap cleaned up in 2024 and then they can make better cap management decisions for going forward into 2025 and beyond. Hopefully the Packers have learned their lessons about cap management by now and they can do a better job of managing the cap going forward. That should not include giving a huge percentage of cap space to one player.

The Packers have time and they should use it wisely. They don't need another "We're not idiots" speech from Murphy. Thanks, Since '61

'61, agreed. Signing JL10 mid-season next season might save some money, if he progresses that much it could be a wise decision. There's a LOT of football to be played between now and then. The big development so far is our O line doesn't look like JL is at high risk of career ending injury lately, which is a nice change I imagine he appreciates. His pocket awareness is improving, I'm not sure if his extraneous steps are settled down and gone yet. He's gotten his feet wet in the league!

Against KC it might prove to be impossible to gauge progress. While they're not peaking right now, that is a GOOD team. It will require mental toughness for our guys to just do their best for 60 minutes.

LOL. Agreed. I'm pulling for the kid big time, and I like what I see, but Cory needs to slow his roll. Heck, let's at least see what JL does against an excellent Chiefs defense at Lambeau with a mini-bye to prepare. I might even be with Cory somewhat if JL wasn't already signed for 2024, but with that in place, I just don't see the reason for the extreme rush. As others have said, no to potentially creating a Daniel Jones situation for the Packers!

I am not saying either way. I am just glad that we are having the conversation. Going into this season there were quite a few that did not like him as qb of the future. Well that dialogue is changing.

I am very happy with what I have seen.

I also do not get the feeling that Love will hold the packer front office hostage in negotiations based on what we have seen from him. By that I mean he signed a one year extension for a modest amount of money.

I hope and at this point, I think we have a keeper in Jordan Love.

Love is playing better than I expected. But let's see him do it for a couple more games, before opening the bank.

From day 1, I have said he lacked accuracy. He has shown improvement, though, except the long ball. That's why Watsons game suffers most. I dont think it's fixable at this point. So MLF needs to stop trying to force it.

I don't think JL has any lack of accuracy. I think he throws to 10+ different targets, and most of those are very different from each other. Combine that with an O line that has been sketchy to put it nicely, WRs outright dropping beautiful passes and running wrong routes, (#9 did that again yesterday) and I think this is VERY fixable.

I think it's a question of "getting on the same page." I think a good strategy is to reduce the different players he targets, with Reed Musgrave and Wicks having emerged as the go to guys. So 2 out of 3 of them go down to injury, and we're lucky Reed did not.

I see the biggest problem being still missing the easy layups. That HAS to be fixed! Kraft and Dillon are both great tools who can win games as possession receivers, but JL10 has to do his part, and do it consistently. No team excels without that.

I Completely agree with Cory and those who feel we have our QB for the future in Love. The value of all QBs keeps rising and we certainly do not need to waste a high draft pick on another QB, So, for economic reasons alone; signing him now makes sense. I would also sign AJ Dillon. With a little blocking he has proven to be a big RB who can also catch passes. As far as the draft, we should use the best available athlete. Period. In the second round we should have the choice of any RB in the draft .Today RB's are undervalued, yet look what McCaffery does for the Forty Niners. Aaron Jones is great but his health has been problematic Trading him for a second round pick would be tempting and probably the right thing to do. Although it doesn't hurt to have three great RBs. Jones can always fill in at any receiver spot as well. He certainly could be used in a 4 or 5 WR set. Detroit has been using RB Jaymir Gibbs that way.

My current hope is for the Packers to use 1 on an OT, 2a on another OL, 2b on a big run-stopping DL, 3a and 3b on a DB/S and RB, but Best Player Available always has to be in the equation.

Unfortunately SST, you couldn’t be more wrong about 99.
Yes, he’s huge, but he is TERRIBLE against the run, and was in college as well. Additionally, Mt. Caleb is huge but had an abysmal RAS. He looked decent during his rookie preseason, but I’ll believe those two guys are ready to play, when the coaches CHOOSE to put them on the field.

Caleb Jones was 400+ pounds during his final season in college 370 plus at the combine and 330 something by camp, when he surprised people with his agility. I’m confident wouldn’t have made the roster as the player he was in college, but he’s not the player RAS speaks to. He’s not Tom, but he’s not leaden footed either. I’d certainly like to see him given a run before the year is up.

This coach chose Hanson, Newman at T, still won’t try Myers, wouldn’t try Tom at RT, then anoints him. Refuses to let Nijman practice at RT, then inserts him and retains him even when one armed because Tom wasn’t good enough supposedly, Sticks rigidly to Myers to the pony if precluding challenge, took our best run blocking OL (prior 2 years and last week) and competent LT and turned him into a bit part player while blooding an unready Walker. If you still trust him, nothing will dissuade you I suppose, but no I won’t blindly trust on the OL.

Cory, you remind me of a gregarious customer of mine who would quietly approach a group conversation, listen for a bit, then say something spot-on topic but very controversial, turning up the group discussion volume as he would slip away with a grin on his face.

I am a huge fan of Jordan Love. His back story, character, work ethic, talent, and calm leadership is easy to root for.

Giving him a huge extension now, after a few promising games would be impetuous and not at all strategic.

The cap monster still needs to be starved. Love's current deal pays him a ton of money. With more cap room after 2024 and another good year, Love can be locked long term AND the roster around him could also be bolstered.

Corey is pretty good at this. He listens, then writes something controversial without bothering to marshal very many cogent arguments to support it, and then lets the rational discussion take place in the comments. And if it is controversial but close to a 50/50 proposition, a lot of comments can be expected.

Patience, Cory. Patience.

I agree with many of the comments above re: not to rush in and sign him to a big contract based on his body of work to date. We do not want another potential Daniel Jones situation hanging over our heads. As well, he needs to become more consistent and learn how to throw the long ball in stride to his receivers. If he can't succeed in the latter point, every NFL defense will know how to defend him. The result will be a shorter NFL career.

The risk of signing him now is just too great given the potential cap savings.

I sincerely hope JL becomes the GB franchise QB. But let's see him prove it consistently over time before GB opens up their wallets.

While I don't agree with Cory's idea to sign him right NOW, waiting until mid-season next year could definitely be risky.

Interesting discussions about locking up Love to a long term contract. We have an enormous amount of dead money in our cap which is going to impact both resigning our better players and any attractive free agents which could improve our team. At this point I will admit I am excited to see Love play well in that Detroit game and have high hopes for the future, but I think it would be prudent to be cautious about signing him to a long term contract during the season. The team is in a decent position contract wise to allow Love to play this season and see how everything looks at that point. We are in the process of recovering from the Aaron Rodger;s contract just like the 49ers are in the process of recovering from the Trey Lance debacle and riding along with Brock Purdy and paying him less than 900K this year.

Easy, easy Cory....easy big boy, back in your stall. Another smart move to have #10 locked up through next season to see how he progresses and handles upcoming adversity, better defenses, winter conditions, pressure moments....

I am truly hoping he is the long term future. I really appreciate #10 and his demeanor.

*Kinda ironic: wanting to see the light go on with one QB while our past one wanted the light out. What is interesting is the same agent. Is his/her nickname "Check the Fuse Box". I don't expect or need #10 to be the smartest person in the room. I am just happy he is in the room.

Potential Two Buck Chuck problems IF #10 keeps trending upwards.

I'm very happy with the progress Love has made this season. I like the kid, and I'm pulling for him. However, (there's always a however, right?), there are still too many kinks in his game to kneejerk into a potential albatross of a contract. Watch the JT O'Sullivan QB School videos; his praise and criticism of Love are honest and accurate. Love's accuracy issues are directly tied to his footwork. There are flashes of brilliance, and embarrassing misses. Even the call and response rhythm of Cory's wordage can't convince me to "sign the man." I could get behind "hey, hey, ho, ho, Joe Barry's got to go" though, even after total domination of the LOLions.

Are we certain the "insane" TD throw wasn't intended for Watson? I think it was.

November 25, 2023 at 03:50 pm

The good news about Love's accuracy issues being tied to footwork is that footwork can be corrected with hard work, dedication to craft, and sound fundamentals being taught.

All indications are Love is dedicated to improving his craft through hard work.. and at least for the time being, we have Tom Clements as QB coach who Aaron Rodgers has credited with being instrumental in his development, specifically and largely due to Tom's attention to detail of, and demand for, exemplary footwork.

As to that insane "thread the needle" TD throw, the same thought crossed my mind yesterday while watching it again from a few different vantages. I just don't know. To be completely honest, it was a gambler's throw regardless who the intended target was- if it was to Watson, he was leading the receiver into major harm's way with the defender crossing from right-to-left; if it was to Reed, well.. that's akin to a lot of early Aaron Rodgers throws where the confidence in the arm may over ride the judgement to let it loose- it was SUCH a tight window.

The comfort I take from the unknowing is that regardless of who the ball was intended for, it looked like it was a catchable throw. The fact that Watson didn't even attempt to make the catch suggests he wasn't expecting the ball, perhaps he was supposed to rub the defender.

The other issue I have with that play- and as I know you watch the JTO'S videos, you'll be familiar- the route spacing.. unless it was supposed to be some sort of rub action as I suggested previously, those WRs are both horizontally and vertically far too close together IMO. What are your thoughts?

There's long term starting QBs who exhibit the same types of footwork issues.
Mechanics are something that are continually being honed by players even at the pro level. I don't see what the complaint is; Love is showing progress, not stagnating, so the coaching seems to be working.

Perfect QB mechanics are few and far between, and if we're being honest, perfect mechanics don't necessarily relate to perfect QB play. With that said, I was not a fan of bringing back Tom Clements for Rodgers because I strongly feel he was an echo chamber for Rodgers' ego at this stage in his (Rodgers') career- and I certainly didn't want him anywhere near playcalling.

However, Clements has a reputation for stressing footwork, and one of the biggest areas that could be improved for Love at this point is fundamental footwork.. So I'm fine with Clements for the time being.

There's some wisdom to be found in the "pump the breaks, he's under contract through 2024" crowd, but there's also a lot to be said for inking a deal before the end of 2023, or the start of 2024, as well.

Yes, the Packers technically don't have to rush to sign Love. Yes, they can sit back and observe more of his play for another year and a half.

I think there's three items that aren't being accounted for by those who are in the 'he's still under contract' crowd:

1) While this is the first extended live-action we fans have seen of Love under center, the Packers have been working with, developing, and observing Love closely for the past three seasons. What is 'first look' for fans is litmus test for Packers coaches and front office- are they seeing what they've expected based on projection. Us fans 'not having seen enough' could very well be the Packers' 4th year of seeing it- enough to confirm it. The same situation existed for Rodgers back in 2008.

2) The Packers asked Love to renegotiate the terms of his rookie contract to basically forego committing to his 5th year option. As I understand it, this allowed the Pack to observe before committing or cutting bait, while Love gave up some money that would have been had in a 5th year option in the process. Jordan Love put his trust in his talent to secure his future, but what perhaps went unsaid in the contract but clearly was understood; he also put his trust in the Packers organization to honestly appraise his performance and if they liked what they saw, to restructure his contract for a long term deal that would compensate him for the monetary loss he voluntarily gave up when he restructured. If the Packers like what they see, and they feel they're seeing what they expected (or more) from Love's development, stringing Love along for as long as possible before committing could instill some bad blood between the Packers and Love. It would be somewhat akin to dealing in bad faith.

3) Tread lightly. There's a fine line between being fiscally responsible and being disrespectful. It should be noted.. if Love continues to develop and ball out, and the Packers basically decline to restructure him until the last possible moment in order to 'save money', beyond the fact that every new QB contract to get signed could significantly raise the contract bar, you run the risk of having a young QB who feels as though he made a contract concession to help the team out, and was then nickle-and-dimed for cheap(er) labor when he's already proven his worth. The biggest disaster possible for GB would be to have developed a viable franchise QB, try to squeeze every penny out of his restructure, and then watch as he decides to use his 2023-2024 game tape to hit the open market and secure big contract with another team.

I think Love is reasonable and honorable. I think if the PACKERS (not the fans, the PACKERS) are confident in what they're seeing from Love on the field, they should be looking at getting him locked up for the next 3-5 years ASAP. Front loading that contract will make everyone happy- it puts a large wad of cash in the players' account, and it pays for the talent at today's rate instead of tomorrow's rate. Yes, you take a heavy cap hit now, but you also are taking a substantially lower hit a few years down the road when you'd expect Love to be hitting peak performance, allowing for outside talent to be more easily added. If things don't work out long term, it makes moving on far more manageable. If things do work out, you can renegotiate the contract in inject more money as needed.

Well said, Oppy. For me, the bottom line is this: If you think you have your franchise QB, you don't fart around and play games with him. You sign him to a long-term contract so the team can move boldly forward into the future.

Of course none of us know whether or not the Packers management thinks they have their franchise QB. But as you suggest, my hunch is that they are closer to reaching this conclusion than most of the fans are, and they may already be there.

You are leaving a little out regarding Loves “restructure”. Love didn’t just do it to bet on himself or help the Packers. The packers had the sole option to pick up the extra 5th year option, it is not up to Love (or any first round pick). However, that 5th year option $ was both too large for the cap and too much for a player who hadn’t played. Love could have said no thanks to a smaller deal for year 5, that’s true. Both player and team were in a bind.

Love could have gone into this year as a lame duck by not agreeing to a 5th year outside of the standard option year. If that was the case, the Packers likely bring in actual competition at qb as Love would have written his ticket out of town at that point. And packers would have wasted all that time developing him. So both parties had a vested interest in making year 5 palatable with no warm fuzzy guarantees that there will be a deal later.

Like some other posters, I’m not ready yet to sign him to another large deal. I will state that I think NFL teams too often sign players too early, the oft mentioned Daniel Jones being one. He is hot garbage. Love is already better than him. I’d like to see how Love finishes out the season first. Not from a win loss perspective but from accuracy, decision making, etc.
