Gut Reactions: Packers revert to form against Titans

Aaron gives his gut reactions after the Packers loss to the Titans.

  • That's what a well coached, physical football team looks like.
  • I am, of course, talking about the Titans.
  • All the accuracy we saw from Rodgers last week completely vanished tonight.
  • Why you make Jaire Alexander the highest paid corner in the game so he can play ten yards off on 3rd and 3 is a mystery.
  • The whole secondary reacted to simple out routes like the Titans had just split the atom.
  • Quay Walker is a player. They have something there.
  • Christian Watson too. As lost as this season is, you can see the Packers have some really promising young talent.
  • Amari Rodgers would have been better from scrimmage tonight than Sammy Watkins. Just saying.
  • Kenny Clark seemed to come to life a little bit tonight.
  • That give up moon ball to Lazard on 4th and 3 from Rodgers was pretty much the end of the season.
  • I can't believe I get to watch this team on Christmas. THIS team. Like being haunted by the Ghost Of Christmas Wasted Super Bowl Window.
  • Matt LaFleur has a total mess on his hands. No way he fires Barry, though he probably should. But he fired Pettine so he could bring in HIS guy. That's Barry, who isn't going anywhere, at least not any time soon.
  • Oh, and he's completely beholden to the quarterback. Everyone in the building is. Completely beholden to a guy they had to have back who can't hit the broadside of a barn with any regularity. It's insanely unhealthy, but its where the Packers are at the moment as an organization.
  • I fully expect, whenever this team is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, for the Packers to place Rodgers on IR and give Jordan Love some starts.
  • Then we get to go into months of "will he or won't he" in regards to Rodgers return.
  • Can't wait.
  • Go Pack.

Still pretty sad this guy was even a choice... He must have really thought Lenard was going to accept the job and panicked?

Guess who his third choice was? Ejiro Evero, the now-Broncos DC who coaches the best defense in the NFL.

They played man and blitzed. Just like the fans wanted. The only issue was too many guys in the box. They were running a 6 2 half the game. Thats highschool defense. If your gonna run a fuckin 6 2, u gotta stuff henry for 1 or 2 yards max. And hold your ground on 3rd down. They relied on the packers backend to cover, and they didn't.

I think the time as come to let Love finish the season. Once again Jones gets 12 carries.. Why is it so hard for them to run the football. Rodgers throws 39 passes. You have a winning formula one week to only throw that out the window and say that don't work...

They ran the ball 19 times for 56 yards. They were getting stuffed left and right and the Titans had 4TFL on those 19 carries. That's 1/5 of the total carries stopped for a loss. We kept them honest until the very end and look what happened. Couldn't gain a single yard. Granted, shotgun runs are the bane of the Packers existence but LaFleur still calls them anyway. Don't know if you saw it but Jones has 6 catches too. In a relatively useless manner as they were all flat throws but sometimes you can get good plays out of them. Today was not one of those days. The Titans stuffed most of GB's "creativity" and the few plays there was someone open, Rodgers couldn't hit them.

Love sucks too but I do want him in cuz Rodgers isn’t Rodgers either so we as packer fans see how bad it’s gonna get. With all the people that have been drafted on this Defensive side of the ball it’s amazing how bad they still are. The entire league laughs at what we wasted with two in their prime

Why was that? 3 possessions should have been 21 points. The team is in disarray and ain’t gonna fix itself. But at least you identified the problem. Finally we have the answer: The TITANS hogged the ball and wouldn’t give it up.

I think our coaching staff isn't capable of calling any type of inventive plays for the running backs...they can't figure out how to use them other than running up the gut or throwing them that wide out pass that never goes anywhere...

The Packers defense did a great job of stopping Henry but they were terrible at stopping the Titans passing game. Our CBs are too far off the LOS and our coverage was terrible. Tannehill picked Barry's defense apart.

On offense the Packers had their chances but they couldn't get the job done. Rodgers was off badly in the 4th quarter but had played pretty well prior to that.
Maybe his thumb got worse as the game went on. He missed some throws that he usually makes easily.

Season is probably over but I agree with Nags that we have 2 good young players in Watson and Walker.

The only question that remains is when do the Packers start playing Love. Thanks, Since '61

I also think the refs are antiques, walker was almost tackled on the Henry big play.no way they didn't see that..i really don't see how why we didn't get interference calls our way,...
we just look flat..

The $50,000,000 QB Gute and Murphy bought is not worth it.

Next opportunity, invest in coaches. They do not count against the salary cap and will have more impact than a too smart for OTAs ,psychedelic mushroom eating hippy.

The side effects of ARs mushrooms are manifested with those “rebel” haircuts and lack of “team” spirit.

And Gute did this massive blunder after AR had displayed eradicate behavior for at least two years.

Gute is in over his head.

The signs of rot from the core were present three years ago. Mark Murphy is the Packers' Elon Musk.

GB should have traded AR at peak value. Here we are, 2 Rodgers driven MVP's later (wish his first goal to start any season was to win SBs!!!), and he's "Aaron the Acid Queen," unable to hit the broad side of a barn...

FFS, it took the Packers 5 years to recover, uh, well,... start to recover, from letting the best ST Coach in the business walk after Murphy dissed his ass.

The Packers are going nowhere until Mark Murphy & Aaron Rodgers are gone.

Been saving this, your weak snark trash, for 5 months, have you? Doesn’t pertain to anything I said here.

That’s how long it had been since my last visit to this site.

Not surprised.

Inmates running the asylum. That was the main point. Murphy knew that was what he was buying - over team unity, success & focus on winning the prize, which should always be the Lombardi Trophy. Not gate receipts. Not MVP Awards.

It took 10 weeks for this team to commit to the run?

They had immense success in beating a white hot DAL team.

Took another 4 days to forget all about that, with 3 players splitting a paltry 19 attempts… but, AR and RPO!!!!

Idiots.

This has been the problem with AR at QB for more than a decade.

Trading AR to the Jets should be Job #1 at season’s end.

I only got to see parts of the game and they were ugly. (1) The 2nd touchdown drive of the Titans, our secondary was giving their wide receivers so much cushion, any quarterback would look good. (2) During the 4th quarter and being down 10 points, there was no hurry up offense until our last possession. (3) I didn't see much fire from the offense or defense. I was thinking where is the leadership that would stoke the spirit of the team and motivate the guys to give it their all. Maybe it was there when I wasn't able to watch. (4) What has happened to our Hall of Fame QB? His game is off and we can't blame it all on the offensive line nor the wide receivers.

I actually don't blame Murphy for the failure of this season, because I thought there was that his image of a powerful running and defense team could work, especially with the emergence of Watson and Doubs. The problems are at the hands of Joe Barry, for not calling good plays, Matt LaFleur, for coaching soft and not sticking with the run, and Brian Gutekunst, for not doing more to help this team. We could have signed another EDGE depth player but it didn't work. Why did we pick up the 5th year option of Savage?

A lot of bad decisions.

i actually DO blame Murphy for all of this. He came in all undid everything Bob Harlan did to build this team by taking back full control of ALL operations. Part of what made the team successful was letting the GM do his job without someone telling him what to do. People want to blame Gutty for all the personnel moves but there's a reason Murphy took control back and what else could it be but to have the final say on who they pick. NO ONE likes to have someone telling them how to do there job, especially when they have to take the blame for the fallout. Moral on this team stinks and it comes from the top! Shit rolls down hill!

I am not saying that the GM should not have some blame for this mess, but how hard it must be to always look over your shoulder and guess if you made the right decisions with the president having the final OK.

Rodgers Played poor 4th qtr. Running game hasn't been able to make any difference. This is what i have been saying all season that with that oline we wont be running well against stout Dlines.
Lazard is the not the true wr1 in the team. Need to fire Watkins ASAP.

The D line hung in there better than I thought they would. Of course, our zone D played as porous as they always do. Then as AR said after the game - he "missed a couple throws". Really? Just a couple? He looked disinterested. So last week was just a tease and now we can officially root for a good draft choice. Will it be a QB or a WR? Can AR convince management he can still be elite? And how many new coaches will there be next year?

Time to relax and think about other things. No point thinking about 2 or 3 first rounders we could have had for AR. (oops)

Neither. A QB would make our QB furious and pouty, and a WR is apparently a wasted pick to our brain trust. Look for yet another Defensive #1.

"Can AR convince management he can still be elite?"
He only has to convince Murphy, so "yes".

"And how many new coaches will there be next year?"
None, except maybe Bisaccia because he's talented and GB is now located in "oppositeland" as far as the coaching staff goes.

Can't blame Berry anymore Lafluer hired refuses to do anything about it or he doesn't have the power to do anything about it . This is on the head coach at this point . We all know that Berry is garbage but he did not hire himself nor is he staying hired by himself .

At this point they are a laughing stock absolutely are poorly coached team with absolutely no heart .

You want a change packer fans than show some heart don't show up for the games leave Lambeau field empty but until we are willing to do that you get what you deserve.

This team is an absolute disgrace to the game and I for one hope they keep getting their ass handed to them because that is what they deserve . I was only a kid in the 80's but I never have disliked a team like this team before they can pound sand . I only feel for the few young guys who are trying . The Packers weren't spent or invigorated, they were, what they had been before the Cowboys gave them a crutch to grab and stand on false feet.

This loss is a blessing in disguise because it paves a better path to an excellent draft position than the path to the playoffs with an immediate expulsion.

I fully expect a beat down next week and the table set for a 5 game debut of Love so the FO can begin amassing trade ideas for one or the other, since Love has no meaningful tape.

I think Watson and Doubs will be an excellent combo next year.

Come Thanksgiving Day, I'll be thankful for not being forced to follow the carrot into another sad season ending, but thankful for the hope of a great draft position, and changes to the obvious.

Very well said! With Gutenkust and his scouts who I believe aren't that good in evaluating talent.Just look at some of his choices in his draft. Many busts and players he never should have even have looked at. Yes,he did draft some good players but missed on many. I went through hell throughout the 70- 80's ,Looking like we're going back in time.

Fear of falling into the cellar is redundant when you already are there.

That sentiment is the root of the decisions that led us here. We are past the point where fear of failure is a thing because we already failed.

Tundra, that aspect is indeed interesting.

Motivated him to do what? Follow “the script?” Because, the script to beat DAL was a run heavy assault, and AJ & AJ split the most combined carries they had all season.

Funny how AR had his most effective, efficient passing day this season, with a run heavy attack.

It’s been my mantra here for years - nearly a decade, but, hero ball.

Yeah it sucks that the poor Pack had a short week while the Titans had 3 weeks off before the game.

Come on, Tennessee played on Sunday as well and then had to travel, to the snow and cold.

The better team won and it was not as close as the final score.

while i agree there were a lot of bad calls...it's the missed open recievers and missed blocks and the general lack of strength of the team that lost this and all of there games this year. it should never have to come down to an officials call. these happen in EVERY game and have to be accounted for. this team is WEAK, there lines have been being pushed back for the last 3 years now. we need a strength coach because we just aren't strong enough. this is football and MLF refuses to say a negative thing about any aspect of the team so why would any of these players worry about how they're playing? by the way ...pretty sure it was a short week for the titans as well...just say'n

I thought our defensive front played with much energy tonight. What is up with our DBs peaking in the backfield when covering downfield? Just play your man! LaF, and Barry, are incapable of making halftime/ in game adjustments. This is LaF fourth year and he has regressed IMO. But we are stuck with him for the near future.

It seemed like the effort was there all 4 quarters and they actually had a chance to make it a game but it came down to some terrible play calling sequences by MLF (or Rodgers who knows), bad throws and poor decisions and by Rodgers, and absolutely freaking terrible coverage by the secondary with the exception of a nice interception by Douglas.

Great to see Watson have some success again and not get hurt, hope that continues. He might just develop into a true #1 receiver.

Barry needs to go now, his schemes are not fooling anyone. MLF should be let go at the end of the season unless he can turn things around and he gets us to 9-8, which seems impossible at this point. Again no meaningful in game adjustments.

Sit Rodgers and bring in Love once we are mathematically out of any chance at playoffs, which is basically right now. Had Love played the whole season he probably would have us at 3-8 or 4-7 right now too, so why the F*** did we pay Rodgers 50 million?

Hard to watch things fall apart.

MLF is once again outclassed and embarrassed by a tough and creative Head coach. He is in way over his head. Secondary played horrible. I blame Barry. I think we have decent talent. Nixon looks far better than Amari. But too late Gutekunst. Should have made that decision weeks ago. Soft Head coach no intensity. Playing scared. AR was off. He isn’t carrying the team and MLF is being exposed. Clean house with MM, BG and Laflower and Barry.

If you think the problems with this team is Rodgers you are drinking too much during the games. Terrible game plan, play calling, o line can’t protect, receivers give up on routes….really? Rodgers has bailed out this team for like 6 years and now the team around him is so bad he can’t save it. Yet you want to bitch slap him and his contract. He will leave the Packers and win with someone else because this crap organization can’t build a team. Save your disdain for Gute since he built this mess. This team lacks talent and it has nothing to do with 12 contract since all they do is draft anyway.

The DC’s game plan to stop Henry was elite. The problem? He had his DB’s playing like Cotten balls on 3rd downs. It’s nauseating watching our corners playing 10 yards deep on 3rd and anything less than 8. Titans played well against our run, Rodgers was off on some of his throws again, and the HC and DC had no clue on what to do or how to adjust. With Rodgers contract, the GM and HC’s extensions, and Murphy having a couple years left, we’re just gonna lose more quality players in FA, and Cap releases and Love will never get his shot. Our best hope is to fire the DC and hire outside of the ML phony crony list of available friends. Anyway….here we are. Dallas just choked. Rodgers has their number. This team and coaches tonight are who we thought they are.

I think it finally dawned on me why they're playing off and soft because they don't want to not just "give up the big play", but because now we no longer can score enough to keep up and overcome it. Playing not to lose is not a strategy and it was on display in it's full glory.

Well we were given a treat last week taking down Dallas. That was sweat. But the spots are still there and not easily cleaned. There is no either/or with MLF or Rodgers being a problem with the Offense. It’s both/and. Throw in some lackluster WR play, although Watson may end up being a gem, and possibly Doubs when he gets healthy again. Might was well give Toure a shot too. OLine - why, why, why was this current group not started together weeks ago. Now, it’s too late. Problem with Defense is easier. Joe Barry. Nothing more to say really.

Would Love to see he what Love can do. No, I don’t trust what the coaches have said. Why would anyone at this point. Show me.

The Titans offense played the flat-footed Packers defense for fools from beginning to end. Yeah, you have to focus on stopping Henry, but that doesn't mean you let receivers run free and play soft coverage to yield easy conversions and TDs. Tip your cap to the Titans coaching staff for being unpredictable and executing their passing game to a tee--and that includes the Henry TD pass.

Meanwhile, the Packers offense was as flat as an opened can of beer sitting in the back of the refrigerator for a month. The running game amounted to nothing, the play calling was unimaginative, receivers not being schemed open, a string of three-and-outs, usual short-yardage struggles, MLF with his patented perplexed look on the sidelines, etc....

We missed Gary in this game, but we really needed more pressure up the middle to move Tannehill off his spot. Save for the one Douglas INT, he was close to perfect. The Packers are probably the only team in the league that would allow the Titans to connect for 333 passing yards.

MLF, Barry, Rodgers: These are some damn mulish people weighed down by not only by habit, but a certain degree of obtuseness.

The Titans didn't even call a clever game plan. They just executed their basic vanilla offense that they ran in camp and preseason (threw in a trick play for fun). The week gave them no time to install anything special. Their coach demanded/expected execution and by keeping it simple was able to get it. Key words: coach, execution.

That's easy baldski,
You have your DB's play 10 yds off the LOS, you stick to a zone scheme that for whatever reason it seems no one understands, and oh yeah, keep Savage in the game no matter how poorly he plays.

Ryan Tannehill has always been a strong-armed, accurate passer; he's a typical zone-coverage killer. BUT, if you get him off his spot, he's MUCH less effective. That didn't happen enough last night. I think it really hurt not having Gary, but it's hard for me to blame the DL, because you HAVE to play the run first against Henry. That offense will give a lot of defenses problems, but with talented corners, man coverage is the best plan against it...IF you have solid safety play... We got to see more terrible play from Savage, unfortunately, this time he was joined by Ford.

Was it receivers in the wrong spot/giving up on plays (How COULD you Lazard?!), or Rodgers' inaccurate throws? Probably both.

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere: That was the entire offensive roster that we expected at the start of the year. All five starting OL, both RBs, Lazard/Watkins/Cobb/Watson and Tonyan/Lewis/DeGuara. And none were lost during the game. That was our BEST offense. Yeesh.

What does the team have to lose by starting Love? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. A loss is a loss is a loss regardless if it’s with the aged Diva or a “poop in the pants” youngster. The draft pick is the same but the reps can’t be replaced and the information gathered about how sticky or not the poo is is invaluable especially in a QB rich draft with a top 10 pick.

Barry needs to be a Texan like Amari tonight. MLF play calling is uninspiring. T have they never heard of the Hurry up no huddle offense? Watkins needs to rest his legs and Touree needs to see the field

I think you are missing the point. Those calls are recognizing that this team and era are over. As such we may as well see what Love is it isn’t with a consistent opportunity and a game plan for him. That way we might know and make more informed choices. Nothing to gain by forgoing that opportunity.

Rodgers is done in Green Bay, whether he knows it or not or in fact wants it. Staying will just tarnish his record. If he’s here this roster isn’t getting stronger and our cap isn’t getting any better. We reached a dead end. It’s over.

"Matt LaFleur has a total mess on his hands. No way he fires Barry, though he probably should. But he fired Pettine so he could bring in HIS guy. That's Barry, who isn't going anywhere, at least not any time soon."

If that is REALLY the case then for one of the first times in the last 32 years I'll be SO SORRY the Packers don't have an owner. An owner would not keep Joe Barry around and he'd probably fire him this morning since the Packers season will probably be over mathematically next weekend.

BUT...We do have a Mark Murphy, a meddling boob who has undone all the good Bob Harlon and Ron Wolf started when Harlon brought in Wolf in 1991.

Nags mentioned it above... How many times does Joe Barry continue to line up not only the highest paid CB 10 yards off on 3rd and 4, but the whole damn secondary, AND keep his fucking job too? And here I thought NFL Coaching was a results based profession.

When the D made a stop, the O couldn't get out of its own way. After the 4th down stop at the 5, all the O had to do is get one first down and give the D a rest. Instead, intentional grounding almost in the end zone and give the ball back to them on our end of the field.

Complementary football. When the O went down and scored, the D let the Titans drive down and score.

As bad as the secondary was, they kept us in the game in the fourth. I don't know if that was all on them or if Tennessee was just trying to use up the clock.

So they held Henry with Extra DL and that worked. But it baffled me why the Secondary didn’t just play man. Terrible coaching. I hate to be that guy on the officiating…. but I had seen so many holds and so many no call PIs. But Barry was terrible. It’s like if you can obviously see the refs are letting the DBs get away with murder ….play man coverage for fucks sake. It’s not like Robert woods is going to kill you with his speed…Jesus, it was just sickening to watch. The plan for stopping Henry was good but the rest was shit.

As bad as Sammy Watkins has been, he was wide open over the middle for what would've been a big play late in the game.....and Rodgers threw a worm-burner. Missed him by about ten yards. And this happened right when the announcers were praising Rodgers for his unorthodox footwork. The guy just doesn't have it anymore. There are flashes, and against Dallas he sustained it for a whole game, but that was the only time it's happened this year. To a large extent, the difference in the game last night was the quality of QB play. It was like watching Aaron Rodgers vs. Mitch Trubisky a few years ago, except this time Rodgers was in the Trubisky role.

I support benching Rodgers once the Packers are mathematically eliminated, but I don't think it's going to happen. Aaron Rodgers runs this franchise. If he wants to play, he will play.
