Hello Wisconsin: Week 3 Poses an Opportunity for Growth in Young Packers Team

A young team has many lessons to learn.

There are plenty more games ahead like the Falcons game for this young Packers team.

At one point during the second half I remarked on Twitter, “This is the most 2008 Packers game I’ve seen in 15 years.” It really did feel like stepping time. Young team showcasing a ton of potential, only to let it slip away due to inexperience and mistakes.

Yes, it was a frustrating loss. But also, it’s the kind of loss you expect out of the league’s youngest and least experienced team. This team has a whole lot to learn, and while there was plenty to like in Atlanta this past week, we also saw a lot about this team’s deficiencies.

But rather than spend a whole lot of time focusing on those deficiencies (I feel like they’ve been pretty well covered this week, and I’d not be adding anything new there), I think it’s also worth noting what a fantastic opportunity this team has in front of them this weekend to showcase some growth.

Coming home for the first time in the season, the Packers will take on the New Orleans Saints, a team that is probably about on par with the Packers in terms of talent, but ahead of the Packers in terms of experience. We get to see how much this team learned from their defeat in Atlanta, and how they’re going to rebound.

One of the things you often see with young, talented teams is that they rebound more readily than more experienced teams that seem to have more to lose. Perhaps it’s because they do not have enough league experience to doubt themselves yet. Who knows. But if the Packers can come out and correct errors they made in week two, there’s no reason to think they won’t win this game.

These corrections must be made by coaches as well as players. Matt LaFleur is now a fifth-year head coach; certainly no greenhorn. However, he does find himself in a very new situation as a head coach. He inherited a very experienced team that immediately found themselves as contenders. Now, he’s got a team without realistic championship aspirations and without a major superstar as the face of the franchise. LaFleur may have some seasons under his belt, but he’s still relatively young, and this is a new situation he’s going to have to learn to navigate. There’s as much to be learned about his capabilities as a head coach as there is about the abilities of this team to grow and thrive.

So what are the biggest things I’m hoping to see out of this team in the coming week?

  1. A greater willingness to ride or die with Jordan Love. The Packers essentially put the ball in AJ Dillon’s hands in crunch time this past weekend rather than being willing to let Love sling it. This guy is your franchise quarterback now. DIllon simply hasn’t been effective at moving the chains of late, and you’re missing starters on the offensive line to boot. In this year of player analysis, give Jordan Love as many opportunities as you can to show what he can do, particularly in the face of adversity. Love has exceeded my expectations so far this year, and has earned the opportunity to get those clutch calls.
  2. Related: keeping your foot on the gas. It really felt like the Packers let up in the second half on both sides of the ball after building a two-score lead. You can never get comfortable with a lead in the NFL, and especially when you have a team this young.
  3. Better clock management. This is an issue for both Jordan Love AND Matt LaFleur that has persisted from the Rodgers era. You simply can’t be wasting as much time and as many timeouts as this team does.
  4. A faster start. It feels after a couple weeks like it takes this team a bit of time to really get into sync after the game starts. I’d love to see them hit the ground running in their home opener and set the tone early.

Obviously there are a whole lot of other things I’d love to see out of the Packers this weekend, but accomplishing these things to start with would be a clear sign of growth.

Wisconsin Beer of the Week

It’s Oktoberfest season, so I’d be remiss if I didn’t feature an Oktoberfest beer in the column within this couple week span!

We in Milwaukee are very fortunate to have a large number of excellent breweries, and that means a large selection of excellent Oktoberfests every year. This is the first year I’ve had the Oktoberfest by Component Brewing in Bay View. It’s called Polka Juice, and it is a delicious, light, malty treat perfectly befitting the season.

Coming in at 6.3 percent ABV, Polka Juice is exactly the kind of moderate, delicious, traditional beer you’re looking for to get you in the spirit of the season. With a bit of crispness in the air, I’m starting to shift my beer purchases toward maltier styles, and who doesn’t love traditional German beer?

You can find Polka Juice anywhere Component distributes. But if you’re in the mood for other Oktoberfests, here are a few of my favorites you’re bound to find statewide:

  • Staghorn by New Glarus Brewing Company: Probably my personal favorite of the widely available Oktoberfest beers.
  • Octoberfest by Central Waters Brewing Company: We had a keg of this on hand for my wedding (which was a mid-September affair) and it was a hit. Not hard to see why; it’s one of the better beers of its style you’ll find in Wisconsin.
  • Oktoberfest by 1840 Brewing Company: 1840 makes the best beer in the state, and their Oktoberfest celebration is coming up on September 30. They’ll be blocking off a portion of their street and having brats, pretzels, food trucks, music, Hammerschlagen and so much more. Check it out if you’re in the area!

Happy Oktoberfest!

You know what you’re getting from a Joe Barry defense

There was a whole lot of hemming and hawing about the Packers’ defense during and after the game on Sunday, and rightfully so. The defense’s ineptitude, particularly in the run game, was a big part of the Atlanta comeback and ultimate victory, as was Joe Barry’s seeming inability or unwillingness to make any type of adjustment to home in on the run game while Atlanta was gashing them throughout the fourth quarter.

There were the usual calls to fire Barry after the game. And yeah, I totally get that too.

But here’s the thing: it’s hard for me to be mad at Joe Barry at this point. He is what he is. He’s a completely known commodity and always has been. He was a bad hire to begin with, and the fact that he still has a job is a minor miracle in its own right. He’s failed miserably in two previous stops and has trotted out bad Packers defenses despite an incredible collection of talent.

Are there aspects of the poor Packers defense that are his fault? Yes, absolutely. But it’s not his fault that he’s still employed. Simply put, the man is in over his head. He has shown no ability to change or improve. The liability here lies entirely with Matt LaFleur and the Packers organization for continuing to allow him anywhere near this defense.

Don’t expect any staff changes midyear unless things REALLY go south, but even then, it’d be a pretty significant surprise. The unfortunate reality is the Packers are keeping a very low ceiling on their defensive capabilities so long as Joe Barry is around, and there’s not really anything we as fans, or even Barry himself, can do about it.

You can certainly have hope that players will execute better, but any hope of better scheme, adjustments, or general coaching is a fool’s errand. You know what you’re getting.

Around the NFC North

As always, it’s time to go around the NFC North.

  • The CHICAGO BEARS are, in fact, bad. And now, fans are starting to turn on the staff and the team yet again. Fans seem to be coming around to the idea that Justin Fields is actually not good, just as we who know better spent months telling them. Fans have already turned against Matt Eberflus and Ryan Poles, and seem to have given up any hope of this team being good in their lifetimes. It’s a far cry from all the smack talk this offseason.

  • The DETROIT LIONS came way back down to earth against Seattle after their opening night stunner in Kansas CIty. If the Lions are truly going to take the next step forward and start being taken seriously as a contender, those are the kinds of games they have to win. Instead, they had a mini-bye and simply came out not looking as prepared or focused as they did in Arrowhead. Things get no easier this week with a tough matchup against the 2-0 Falcons, who have an early contender for Rookie of the Year in Bijan Robinson.

  • The MINNESOTA VIKINGS have a really tough schedule this year, and this week are facing a team with a sense of desperation in the Los Angeles Chargers. Justin Herbert should have no difficulty carving up this Vikings defense. It’s just going to be a matter of whether the rest of the team is actually able to live up to their talent. If the Vikings manage to come out of here with a win, expect a lot of talk about firing Brandon Staley in LA. Meanwhile, Justin Jefferson seems to be seething internally more and more each week. It’ll be very interesting to see what sort of career decisions he makes if this year continues to go south for Minnesota.

THIS or THAT in Mr. Backes’s room

If you follow me on Twitter/X (@timbackes) you’ve probably seen my THIS or THAT series that I”ve started in my classroom. Basically, every morning I put up a new poll on my whiteboard and have students participate throughout the day. Some polls generate more interest, but there’s been a consistent increase in participation over the course of the last week or so.

The idea is simple: I put up two options and students mark a tally down for which they prefer. I teach all levels of high school, so it’s a fairly representative sample of teenagers.

Continue to follow along throughout the school year. Here are the winners I’ve had so far:

  • French Fries defeated Tator Tots
  • Joe Jonas defeated Sophie Turner
  • Beyonce defeated Taylor Swift
  • Coffee drinkers defeated non-coffee drinkers
  • No pineapple on pizza BARELY edged out pineapple on pizza
  • Twix defeated Snickers
  • Christmas defeated Halloween
  • Sweet snacks defeated salty snacks

I’ll try to keep you up throughout the year so you too can be in touch with the preferences of today’s youths. And if you have any THIS OR THAT polls you’d like to survey the kids on, feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments!

Quick Jordan Love statistical update

Yes, he’s been imperfect. Yes, he clear has areas of improvement.

But it’s hard not to be pretty pleased with Jordan Love’s performance so far this season. He’s certainly outperformed even my relatively high expectations, and has given me hope that the Packers have, indeed, found their next star quarterback.

After two weeks, Jordan Love LEADS THE NFL (!) in passing touchdowns (6), adjusted yards per pass attempt (9.92) and passer rating (118.7), as well as several other advanced stats tracked by Pro Football Reference. All this while not turning the ball over. Say what you will about some of the weaknesses that still exist in his game; I think if you told Packer fans several months ago the kind of start Love would have to this season, we’d have been universally ecstatic.

Moreover, there have only been three other Packer seasons EVER in which the quarterback threw six touchdowns in the first two weeks of the season.

Again, I want to be very clear that Love has plenty of growing to do, but it’s hard not to be thrilled. Love has thrown a tremendous amount of poise, and the year-over-year growth he’s shown these last couple years is incredible. He deserves a lot of credit, as do his coaches (particularly Tom Clements).

Quay Walker had a hell of a game

I’ll tell you what–if Quay Walker continues to play like he has the first couple weeks, the kid may well push for an All Pro slot this year.

His highlight reel touchdown from week one has drawn the most attention, and understandably so, but he just played the finest game of his career in Atlanta. He was all over the field, and was particularly strong in coverage. It does not feel like the Packers have had an inside linebacker with the combination of well-rounded skills and sheer physical talent since… well, ever, really. Nick Barnett was a really good player for a long time, and De’Vondre Campbell had a well-deserved All Pro recognition of his own.

But neither Campbell nor Barnett have Walker’s raw athleticism. So if Walker is able to combine those physical gifts of his with all-around excellence on the field, he could become a special player.

In a week when there was a lot to dislike about the play of the defense, Walker was a real bright spot.

Predictions for Packers/Saints and Week 3

Feels to me as though Packer games are going to be tough to predict all season long. This is going to be a good test for the Packers in terms of how they can bounce back after a difficult loss, because you know there are going to be more of those coming this year.

The Packers finally get their home opener. The Saints are not to be underestimated; they have some of the pieces in place to make a run for the playoffs this year. However, they’re also far from a juggernaut.

To me, this one really comes down to whether Aaron Jones and David Bakhtiari play. The loss of both would be devastating. We saw how AJ Dillon fared behind a backup offensive line a week ago. Even having just one of Jones or Bakhtiari probably makes the difference in Atlanta. If both play, the Packers win. Even if one plays, I think the Packers win.

Because I’m feeling charitable early in the season, give me Green Bay 24, New Orleans 20.

LAST WEEK: 10-6

Where the Packers need to see the most improvement on both defense and offense is dictating on which side of those most precious few yards on the field the game will be played.

The Packers lines got pushed around by the Falcons on both sides of the ball. Winning starts with changing that. Absent that, everything else is just one of Ron Wolf's farts in the wind.

Agree Savage. Both lines lost more snaps at the LOS than they won. Very disappointing. I went into this season feeling very bullish about both lines, reinforced vs Bears...became a bit bearish against the Falcons. But for two different reasons.

The OL's issue was more one of skill...as in a loss of it. Losing your two best starters...and both on the left flank and leverage was lost there.

The DL's issue was one of scheme. After starring strong, Barry lost leverage by switching to a pass D prevent scheme and the Falcons obliged by pounding them, wearing them down as they missed tackles, lost coverage as easy passes followed...followed by more pounding.

Hopefully some skill returns with the return of duct tape Bakht. Scheme? IDK now.

As I watch games, my attention to the action starts with the direction of the push at the LoS, then moves to the ball.

More often than not, it dictates the outcome of the play.

Okay, so after exactly 3 starts in his NFL career to date and just two of those this year he LEADS the NFL in those categories...Hmmm

I'll tell you one thing, if all of us (Packers Fans) were told the Packers would be 1-1 through two weeks with both games played on the road, Love was leading the NFL in passer rating AND TD passes, we'd have all signed for that in a second with a big HELL YEAH! Love is gaining my confidence week after week but better yet he's gaining his teammates and coaching staff's confidence. That 0-6 performance in the 4th quarter this past Sunday was a learning experience for Love and his teammates. They WILL learn from it.

We've been SO SPOILED the last 30 years. We've (Packers Fans) come to EXPECT the Packers to be able to drive 50 yards to get in FG range with 30 seconds and no TOs. That's what Favre and Rodgers did...RIP the hearts out of the opposing Defense in seconds at the end of the game to give them an opportunity for a TD or FG attempt. This was Loves first shot at leading his team to a come from behind victory and he fell short. Give the man a break and some time.

Joe Barry... Speaking of falling SHORT... Did we really expect different? I mean I know I was very optimistic at the start of the year despite all the evidence suggest Barry really IS over his head. It doesn't matter if Barry is on the sideline or the booth, it's STILL Joe Barry as the DC.

We need to give him and this team some time. Lets not forget the circumstances in this game. He is playing with 2 rookie WR's and a rookie TE. He had 2 backups on the left side of the OL. No timeouts with a minute left. There was a lot to overcome.

The first throw to Reed was him and Reed not being on the same page. The next 2 plays were off as well. But the 4th down throw to Toure was impressive. Maybe his best throw of the game. But unfortunately Toure didn't haul it in and there was a penalty.

I believe Love will get it. Just have to get the first play to work and get into rhythm.

Well, Favre certainly tried to rip my heart out .

I don't know how Love could have done much better. The offense is averaging 27.5 ppg, he hasn't turned it over, he's thrown six TDs....without our main weaponry. On the road.

And Love is doing that without his most explosive playmaker on offense. Breaking in 3 rookie pass catchers. Our most experienced WR essentially played a 1/2 season last year.

And then the 2nd game we were without our best offensive playmaker in Jones, our most explosive playmaker, our Left tackle, and lost our left guard in the game. There is a lot on his plate.

What is impressive is his poise. He doesn't get rattled. He has made great choices overall. Outside of 1 bad throw, he has looked good.

I agree very much with most of what NP says on this.

As I frequently have to remind Viking fans, the championship is not won in September. Let's see if we can practice and play the same guys for the next week, because we can be 3-1 if we can win two home games.

I don't see what else we could have expected that's better than running an offense that has scored 27.5 ON THE ROAD!! Despite missing some key players. Six TD passes, no turnovers. Amen. What the hell else do you want????

Tim, enjoyed your article and think you’re right on the young Packers. I know BB from New England is hard to compare a coach to, but he has made his living taking away a team’s most important weapon and dared teams to beat him without it. As long as he’s been coaching why haven’t coaches like Barry following that pattern? There must be years of game video showing how to do it.
Regardless, you just reinforced my opinion on today’s youth that they are going to the dogs…Twix over Snickers.

Boy, comparing Joe Barry to BB? The difference is that BB knows how to take calculated risks. Barry won't take risks. Add to the fact BB is a real football mind while Barry is... not.

But we've got to love these young players! It's exciting to watch until player inexperience combined with poor coaching occurs. The latter is a shame that the organization has to address. It's been 3 long years with Barry. He has most definitely exceeded his best before date.

The Vikings have discovered that they don't have the OL to run the football with pedestrian RBs...they're already feeling the pressure to right the ship after a 13-4 season that was mostly lightning in a bottle, and are grasping at straws. Please do keep dealing away draft capital. Akers has already shown he's not afraid to make unhappy noise in the locker room. Don't need him in the Packers' young locker room.

Good RB's seem to be easy to find in all rounds. Its better to use our picks on young, fresh RB's than give up a pick and get one without that new RB smell to them.
This move seems more of a 'someone in the Vikings FO really, really liked Akers since college' move than a savy GM finds an undervalued gem kinda move.

Open up the Playbook for Love. Let him run the show. Don't make the same mistake of riding a non-existent running game as they did in Qtr IV in Atlanta. His mistake was investing in defense. Offense scores points.
Campbell is just coasting. I would move him. Nepotism from the Coaches Club doesn't win championships.
Coaching up Talent. Walsh won the SB in '81 with three rookie defensive backs.

I don't hate Joe Barry either. I am perplexed by ongoing incompetence and arrogance. But it is not hate.

As a manager during my career, you know when an employee or a colleague is in this doom loop and you think:

"Simply put, the man is in over his head. He has shown no ability to change or improve." You are correct, Tim. I have been of this opinion since "the man" was hired. Unfortunately, Barry's manager must be giving him good performance reviews.

Regarding your classroom polls...these are High School students, right? How about John Adams or Thomas Jefferson...Freedom of Speech or controls on disinformation...gasoline or all electric vehicles. If you discuss your polls with students, you may get more interesting discourse vs Twix or Snickers.

I humbly disagree with your claim that Barry is in over his head LP. I think he is just a sh*tty coach. But to me what's worse is the decisions made by LAF both in the original hiring and of his retaining Barry. If Barry does not work out this year, and it does not look like he will, we have wasted a year in improving our defense. Now that is on LAF!

When the offense is stupid or passive, or punts rather than kicking a 56 yard field goal, the fanbase rightly criticizes MLF, not Adam Stenovich. Why the disconnect on the defense. MLF isn't the offensive coordinator, and yet fans rightfully hold him accountable. Joe Barry is an errand boy for MLF. This is Matt's team, not Joe Barry. Matt hired his own damn staff.

A fish rots from the head.

Barry’s success or failure is entirely on LaFleur after last year. I’d say the same of Stenovich/Butkus. The question is, how bad will Barry and others be, and whether LaFleur shows redeeming qualities sufficient to offset that?

At this point, the jury is out on that despite the fact that I personally think Barry has now shown exactly why he has had the career he has had to date. As to others, well let’s see how their units do.

Since Murphy and co were not changing HC under any circumstances last off season, we were always going to have the chance to see what he is minus Rodgers. In the end, events have essentially led to LaFleur being given a rope and we are now going to see how that ends up.

MLF doesn't strike me as a liar...he said retaining Barry was his decision for "continuity's sake".

He also hired Barry. I am confident coaching hires and fires are in his domain. Certainly he gets input from MM's Football Committee.

Totally agree. Why would it be anyone else's decision to hire the assistant coaches rather than the head coach. It is his team to coach and to coach them properly he gets to hire his own group of coaches. This is a given!

This should be a better match up for the Packers. Not so much running the ball through us, as the Falcons did in Joe Barry's porous scheme, last week. "The MINNESOTA VIKINGS have a really tough schedule this year,..." Unlike their schedule last year, where they thought they could vault into the playoffs with a mediocre team and get a couple of lucky wins--which they did not. As for the Packers, let's get our injured guys healthy and take care of business. The North is ours for the taking, so, let's do it! Beat the Saints and move on from there! GO PACK, GO!!!

I agree on the matchup, but any opposing OC who doesn't at least try to establish the run against the Packers needs to have his head examined.

A maybe more likely tactic for teams that aren’t as strong running the ball or as oriented to it is to wait for Brooks and Wooden and run straight at them now that they have been consistently exposed on film. That might inhibit Barry getting his speed rushers out and his willingness to spell Clark and Slaton. Reduce the rush by running at it, tire the best guys, knock threats from the game.

Brooks is 300 + lbs. He can handle himself as a true DE, not showing up in two-man fronts where they get doubled. Just run four bigs at the same time and let the ILBs earn their pay.

So what are the biggest things I’m hoping to see out of this team in the coming week?

A greater willingness to ride or die with Jordan Love -
I think they are probably still learning what Love is good and what he likes. Also I feel like they are still figuring out what they have at other positions.

Related: keeping your foot on the gas -
This is a learning opportunity for the young team. Never take the foot off the gas.

A faster start -
One of the first impressions I have of Love is that he takes a bit to get into the rhythm of the game. He did the same thing in training camp and preseason. It takes him a bit to settle in, but when he does, he is pretty good. They need to figure out ways to get him more into rhythm early.

Around the NFC North

The CHICAGO BEARS -
What in the hell is going on in Chicago. What a freaking mess. Hell even the DC resigned after having his home raided by the FBI.

The DETROIT LIONS -
Lions need to prove themselves. They got all the offseason hype. Now they have to earn it.

The MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Vikings shouldn't be written off yet. While I don't think they will be a team to make a deep playoff run or anything. They shouldn't be written off yet. Jefferson is a beast.

If Cousins goes to the Jets--and that talk is still out there--, the vikings could be in rebuild mode. That is something I feel Jefferson wants no part of. He could walk if the right team calls. As far as writing off the vikings goes, I feel it is almost a given, every year. Especially on my part.

"That is something I feel Jefferson wants no part of. He could walk if the right team calls."

His 5th year option was picked up, so they have control through 2024 at least...franchising him after that could come into play. I'm guessing a team would have to offer quite the haul for Minny to agree to a trade.

He’d have to be willing to essentially forgo his pay by refusing to turn up to force his way out. That’s a lot of pay.

I think the Vikings would need to fully fall out of the NFCN and playoff picture before they'd mail it in like that. It's not like they've got a budding young star sitting behind Cousins at QB.

The Jets can't deal that 1st round pick in 2024 without the Packers agreeing to release it, since it's tied to outcomes based on season performance. The Packers could earn some additional compensation to agree to release it, though. I just don't see the two timelines (Jets desperation/Vikings coughing it up) aligning.

What would the Jets be willing to give up for Cousins considering:

He's a 35 year old QB with ONE playoff win to his credit, with a reputation of folding in big games. Plus, if the Jets believe Rodgers is coming back next year, Cousins would be a 1 year rental, learning a new system with the season already under way. How much would that be worth realistically?

Desperate owners have done stranger things I guess.

Mrtundra,
I can't get myself to believe the talk about Cousins going to the Jets. The Jets give the appearance of being committed to Rodgers, and Rodgers to them. With Rodgers "I'm The Man" personality I think bringing in a veteran starter could challenge his commitment as he'd likely feel slighted.
As for the Vikings, choking seems a part of their DNA, and an annual event. You can look back over a long history and it's not uncommon to see them start like gamebusters and then fall like rocks. This year they've started as rocks. Hell, they celebrate division titles as if they were SuperBowls. Gotta' be a tough life being a Skol fan!

This could be a strange season if the Vikings throw the towel in. Any stumble by the Lions (which is very possible) could lead to a 7-10 or 8-9 division winner? I’m not looking for a way for the Packers to back into a division title, just looking at a possible scenario. 49ers, Cowboys and Eagles look to have separated themselves from the herd.

I know its an outside shot but Jefferson getting traded to the Rams in a year or so makes so much sense in so many ways its hard not to consider it a legit possibility. I posted more details on the boards for Tim's last article. I'll freely admit that a part of this is wishful thinking just so I can watch Vikings fans suffer as JJ in his prime gets traded.

On offense, we had a lot of players that needed experience in this league and to grow. So far, I think we’ve seen some of that from most. That’s a good sign. There is a long way to go in terms of technique, timing and general savvy, but we knew that. The question would we see players developing. I think we are.

On D, last week’s trip down bad memory lane clarified a lot for me. Barry has a scheme, it’s a little different from last year, but it’s still all he has. He relies on it regardless of matchups or players and lives or dies by it. He’s the epitome of a one dimensional coordinator. That recipe will not get more from his players but less over seasons. He should not have been retained.

Until last season when the team was in throes of listlessness and blah play, LaF's teams hadn't lost back to back regular season games in his tenure. He'd always been able to get his players to bounce back. This week will be a test of getting back to that mojo. I'm hoping that they continue to play energetic ball in the home opener. Watson practiced yesterday (Wednesday), but still no A Jones. That creates a little different pressure on a defense, at least.

I'm hoping/expecting the defense to come out and play fired up at home this week against the Saints to make up for their 4th quarter collapse last week in Atlanta. If the offense can have either of Jones or Watson or both return they can move the ball against the Saints defense.

It's important for a young team to establish their home field advantage. The Packers can begin to do that this week. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

I agree with #3. MLF wastes timeout & the offense abuses too many. Nothing let for the defense. MLF will lose games because of his poor clock management. Interesting to hear "things to clean up" line then. GPG!!!!

Why does it have to be either or? Let's not ride Love or Dillan. Let them both have their way.

If Love keeps taking care of the ball, the rest of the problems will take care of themselves. It may be lucky he doesn't have a turnover, but luck counts. Bad luck sure does.

Get the O-line operating as a unit no matter who's playing. and Dillan will surprise a bunch of fans evidently. That will make Love's job so much easier.

If the D can continue disrupting and actually hold onto the interceptions and we don't turn the ball over, we win.

Let's ride this young team. There's no "either or" in TEAM. Good high school pole question.

Steve,
I love your optimism, we really have no choice other than to ride this young team, and they (the young guys) have shown us some good things.
That said, our defense is not that young, and there's a lot of high draft picks on that side of the ball that have been there a while. To continue being 'disrupting' is not enough, it's time for them to step up and STOP the other team. They have the horses to do it and a little NFL caliber coaching could likely help. I'll ride MLF on that one for keeping Barry..

Defense is always going to lose some plays to exceptional athletes in the NFL. Doesn't mean they'll always lose the games. Look how many years guys like Walter Peyton and OJ played without winning games regularly.

What I meant by "disrupting" is, catching those dropped interceptions more regularly. Just think what might have changed if even just one of the two drops were caught. CTFB!

MLF wasn't regularly running the play clock down to 1 second - it was Rodgers. Fine to criticize MLF for not being able to control his quarterback, but the clock management stuff was clearly on Rodgers.

I have been watching close and Love is running it down to about 4 a bunch, so MLF's play calling must have something to do with it. Would love to see more buffer and less time for the D to rest and adjust to personnel.

I think it is connected. MLF is actually calling two plays into the QB. The original play and the 'CAN' play as a second option. Thats twice as much verbiage and twice as much thinking about what to call thats needed. Rodgers does like to get as much time to read the defense so he no doubt played a part but I think its just apart of MLF's coaching style.

My concern about Barry if he is around too long is that these players will have learned how to lose games and not how to win games, and that stink would carry over to a new coordinator. I never thought I'd miss McCarthy but sometimes I miss his confidence in fixing mistakes he sees on film. I hear LaFleur say the words but they are not as believable to me. McCarthy was a young coach who really grew into his own in GB. LaFleur doesn't seem like he is evolving that much.
