Packers Linebackers Off To Sluggish Start

The Green Bay Packers were without linebacker Clay Matthews again at Tuesday's training camp practice as he nurses a sore knee.  With Matthews out, the others fighting for a roster spot had another opportunity to benefit from increased snaps.  Head coach Mike McCarthy expected them to do just that and judging by his comments after practice, it doesn't sound like they made their coach proud.  McCarthy told his linebackers that they need to start making more plays.  After just a few padded practices, the coaching staff is already starting to form big opinions on who sticks on this year's final roster.

McCarthy did admit that they're still installing parts of the defense and that the learning curve is high for some of these younger players.  Still, he expects them to think less and just play.  Third year man Nate Palmer agreed with McCarthy, saying that even if it's just a few snaps in practice, it's up to each of them to make the most of those valuable reps.  Rookie Jake Ryan hasn't made any major headlines yet, after some hopes that he might jump up and grab more playing time to free up Matthews to get back outside.

The fallout of no one stepping into one of the newly vacated inside linebacker spots is Matthews having to spend more time inside.  It helped and produced results last year, but it's not the ideal scenario for a Packers defense that is looking to take a big step forward and get to a championship-caliber in 2015.  Andy Mulumba is reportedly having a good training camp so far as he returns to his outside linebacker position after recovering from ACL surgery last year.  That's good news as far as getting some production outside if Clay is inside.  But let's see how it all comes together in a preseason game.  A few padded practices isn't enough for the Packers to hang their hat on.

Inside linebacker was a position of need and high interest as the draft approached back in late April.  While Packers general manager Ted Thompson doesn't have a long history of drafting strictly for need, many saw the Packers addressing the hole in the middle after letting go of two starters from last year and moving their star defender out of position.  Fortunately, Matthews is a gamer and is never really out of position because he can play well inside or outside.  When Thompson didn't take a linebacker until round four, it became clear that he and the team felt that they had a plan to replace A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones.

It's too soon to say that the plan in question is not working, but they aren't raising any eyebrows either.  This will continue to be an area that will get a lot of attention and have many eyes on it through the rest of the summer.  The Packers have solid starters and depth in so many areas and look to be strong contenders for a Super Bowl this season.  They cannot afford to allow a shortfall at a key defensive position to hold them back, especially when it was a known need going into the offseason.  This is a situation that will tell us a lot about the coaching staff and what they can do with the talent they have.  Winston Moss is now the sole linebackers coach and has been with the team for many seasons under McCarthy and this is partly his time to shine.  The rest is up to the guys wearing the jerseys.  When opportunity knocks, they must answer.

I love the way McCarthy challenged the ILBs publicly. Let's see if someone rises to the occasion. Disappointing that Palmer hurt his hand - I think he may be the best of the bunch competing for the position at this point.

Well we could have always ....you know....drafted a solid LB lol. But seriously I know we have it in us to make great players out of UDFA and what not but it's hard to complain about a couple rookies (4th round being the highest rookie we got ) and late rounders or UDFA vets to not be stud linebackers. We had a chance to get a solid LB and we chose to get 2 cbs. Not trying to start an argument, but cmon now.

I did too, but one look at the depth chart(for OLB and ILB)and I felt that the Packers did a good job. Its crazy deep, and you might as well let the youngsters do something aside from staying on the bench. We do the draft part well, now we gotta do the develop part.

Plus, Jake Ryan was the #5 OLB before 2014, so he can be(hopefully) like Matthews, playing both inside and out.

I am hopeful for Ryan too. A 47 jersey with Dawson on it just sounds better to me.

Dude, I know how you feel bra. I felt like i got bit**-slapped across the face with the Randall pick, and then co**blocked with the Montgomery pick. Better players IMO were on the board. Its not fair lol. I still wish the best for these guys.

Oh yea definitely hope Ryan does well. I just really think we will regret skipping on a couple of these guys especially Dawson.

My thought is that CB is a more premium position than ILB. I also think that TT and GB simply had Rollins and Randall rated higher than the ILB prospects available at those spots in the draft.

Holmgren once said "if your nose tackle has a bad game, you get gashed for a few runs. If your QB has a bad game, it's over."

So I am thinking that same way regarding CB's vs, ILB's: long TD passes given up by a CB vs. gashed for inside runs or short completions over the middle surrendered by ILB's.

GB has numerous prospects at both of these positions, so, let's allow time to do its thing.

Agreed completely!! Also we could still line Clay up at ILB if the other young guys do not pan out. Who would we be putting in at CB if Hayward does not pan out??? We need the competition at CB.

There is still plenty of time to sort out the ILB position. We can probably assume that Barrington will be one of the starters. We still have 4-5 weeks to establish the rest of the ILB rotation. I expect that CM3 will continue to have a role in the ILB rotation. I would be concerned if CM3 had to play ILB exclusively for 2 reasons. First it will diminish our outside pass rush since neither Perry or Neal can be as effective as CM3 and second I see a high injury risk for CM3 playing inside on every down. We can't afford to lose CM3 for any significant period of time. Even though it is very early in camp I am happy to see that MM is already pushing for better results from the ILBs. Go Pack! Thanks, Since '61

Ted matched the raiders offer to keep Richardson. I think you'll see him near the LOS a lot. He's kind of a hybrid player, seems like more and more of them in the NFL these days. It is time to make a move SR, you've been here long enough to make a jump to the next level...................or not?

I think so (or hope so at least). He just needs the snaps.

This is the only problem with "draft and develop". If the draft picks don't work out, there's going to be a hole, as we all know TT won't often dip into FA at all.

We all know this team could have used a David Harris or Brandon Spikes type. But we all knew that it isn't how TT works.

Another option is using Richardson in the dime. Maybe even Nickel??

Hope this year at ILB isn't like 2012 at safety. If CM3 misses any games it just might be.

Bearmeat - good post, I agree. There is not much behind CM3 at ILB. Hopefully Palmer or Ryan will step up like HHCD did at safety last year. Go Pack! Thanks, Since '61

MM is trying to push the ILBs to a point where he can see confidence in their play vs. going through the motions. Instead of playing not to lose a position, MM wants to see them playing to win the position.

No worries... just wait and see... kinda like the last 5 years, worst ILB in the league. TT says, " we don't need no stinkin ILB's"
