Packers Mock Draft Monday 5.0

Ross will provide a weekly mock draft using Fanspeak's mock draft simulator, On the Clock.  He will also scour the internet for a few mocks to see who the "experts" have Green Bay taking that week and will provide analysis.

There isn't a ton of creativity in this week's selections.  This mock is very much "inside the box".  I used Walter Football's board and of course the fan generated team needs.  My first round choice was largely between Derek Barnett, TJ Watt and Gareon Conley.  As you'll see in Cheesehead TV's upcoming draft guide, which you can pre order right here for a reduced rate, I have Barnett ahead of Watt.  That, in addition to still liking 8 of the CBs still on the board, led me to select Barnett.

Easily enough, Tankersley was available in the 2nd.  Tankersley, with his 6'1" frame, 4.40 speed and excellent senior season will provide a potential CB1 for Joe Whitt.  I love Carlos Henderson.  He will almost certainly not be available in the 3rd round, but in this mock he fell because of his height.  Henderson measured in at 5'11" at the combine.  There are so few things more overrated than heigh when evaluating a wide receiver.  He's a dynamite return man and forced 48 missed tackles last season, almost twice as many as the next receiver in college football.  He is flat out the best YAC guy in the draft.

Pocic is a talented interior offensive lineman from a top end program.  Elder in the 4th round is a steal and another good addition to the secondary.  He's the best tackling CB I've seen from this 2017 class.  Jamaal Williams gives Green Bay the power back that it doesn't necessarily have with Montgomery and Michael.

One domino effect I coudld see here is a move from CB to S for Quinten Rollins. House, Randall, Gunter, Tankersley, Elder, Hawkins is a young and talented group.

National Mocks:

Dan Kadar, Mocking the Draft- TreDavious White, CB LSU

White is as good a candidate as any to be the Packers first round selection if they go with a corner.  You'll see him ranked as high as third and as low as tenth in this cornerback class, depending on who you listen to.  That fact alone is why I tend to visualize this Packers draft as one with a corner in the second round, but it would be difficult to argue with White.  He's a true man corner and can help out in the slot if needed.

Chad Reuter, NFL.com- TJ Watt, OLB Wisconsin, Marlon Humphrey, CB Alabama, Danny Isidora, G Miami, Joe Williams, RB Utah, Richie Brown, LB Mississippi State and DeAngelo Yancey, WR Purdue

Cool to see a national 5 rounder to immediately put up against my 5 rounder.  Reuter hits a lot of the same position groups that I did.  I happened to hit corner twice while he snagged a linebacker prospect.  At 6'2" 236, Brown could provide depth at the "beef" linebacker roster spot behind Jake Ryan and contribute on special teams.   I love Watt and Humphrey as a 1-2, Isidora is fine and Williams is an intriguing running back prospect.  My strategy with wide receiver, though, would be to get a starter quality receiver early or don't take one at all.  Davis and especially Allison are good enough as depth without even finding out if Max McCaffery can play.

Walter Football- Gareon Conley, CB Ohio State, Tyus Bowser EDGE Houston

Conley is high on a lot of Packers fans' list.  He doesn't possess great ball skills but he is a shut down corner in the sense of limiting what his receiver can do.  He migh never lead the league in INTs but his man isn't open very often.  Bowser is a Jonny Come Lately to the pre draft process and scares me quite a bit.  So much of his draft steam is based off of a senior bowl performance and combine numbers.

Dieter Kutenbach, Fox Sports- Christian McCaffery, RB Stanford

PLEASE STOP DOING THIS IT IS A TERRIBLE FIT. CHRISTIAN MCCAFFERY IS ALREADY ON THE ROSTER HIS NAME IS TY MONTGOMERY

Tim Daniels, Bleacher Report- Charles Harris, EDGE Missouri

I've mentioned what my issues are with Harris before.  He has athletic limitations that don't provide the upside to be worth a first round pick.  I wouldn't hate this selection but it wouldn't make me happy, either.

Timothy Rapp, Bleacher Report- Dalvin Cook, RB Florida State

I'm on a bit of an island as far as "smart football" is concerned here.  I don't hate the Cook pick because he doesn't duplicate what Montgomery and Michael can do and is an elite player a la Ezekiel Elliot.  The draft's depth at EDGE and CB allows the Packers offense to become lethal with the addition of Cook.

I find it odd that Barnett consistently drops in nearly all of Fanspeak's mocks regardless of which big board you use. Something fishy there. Most big boards have him top 10 or top 15. I don't see it happening in reality.

I also think Watt might be the better pick there if you had to chose between the two. He seems more like Clay in his ability to play inside or out. Much more valuable I think long term especially in the light of GBs wierd injury history.

I think TT will trade out of the 1st rd if Mahomes, Kizer, Watson, or Trubisky drops past 28th. Someone will want to jump N.O. @ 32, Clev @33 or S.F @34.

Not if he wants Watt! And why would you let the patriots have MeliFonwu? Unless Barnett gets injured. He's gone. Hole at Safety coming. Capers defense depends on safety play.

You do have a pretty good draft. I can't see peppers or cook lasting @29. Tim Williams has mental issues. but should go before 93. But not a TT guy. #172 corn should try farming. (1 guy thats climbing is Howard Wilson cb out of Houston. ) levins climbing 5th/6th to the packers. .

i like it....except for Cook in the first. if Mixon has satified TT in the character dep't, i think you jump on Mixon in the first. Otherwise, i would go with Watt or Davis WR if he drops.

If Mixon in the First?. Try going to u tube and look at the highlights on Mixon and Perine. I don't see how TT could go with offense in the first@29. It's defense all the way. TT must save Capers job!

Mixon may be best RB since AP. Can't pass on that if his behavioral issues are correctable.

Draft update 4/3
1. TJ Watt OLB... Even if Barnett falls to 29 he is identical clone to Nick Perry
2. Fabian Moreau CB- Speed kills- immediate press coverage 4.38 40 speed
3. Joe Mixon - RB, No I'm not drinking the Koolaid , this kid is a legit 1st round draft pick but his off field problems are causing him to drop.. 6'1'' 210 big back that has something to prove
4. Kendall Beckwith ILB- injury has kept him out of the first round, high value pick here if he makes it this far. 233 tackles, 6'2''254 speed... Packers get a steal if he id here.
5. Jaleel Johnson DT- Road Grader! Run Stuffer - Iowan
5. Ben Braden G - Brawler
6. Nathan Gerry SS- Same mold as Kentrell Brice another hard hitting safety with range
7. Storm Norton OT- Project

Priority FA after the draft...
QB- Davis Webb
CB Treston Decoud
G Kyle Kalis
WR Kenny Galladay 6'4 215 speed

For the life Of me Barnett as a Perry clone is just something I can't see. Unless that comment is literally based on him playing DE in college. Film is just not similar at all.

As much as I would love to see TJ Watt be a success, I don't think there's enough experience to justify him as a 1st round draft pick. If you spend a 1st round pick, you don't want a project (insert Justin Harrell joke here).

Setting talent aside for a moment, I wish the Packers would draft/sign a badass. There was a toughness Lacy brought to the team's game. I wish they would put someone on this defense that intimidated the other team.

Nice mock, Ross. I liked all the picks. I am surprised (looking at the other mocks you mentioned) that there are not more calls for Lamp (as a guard) in the first - I cannot see that myself.

I had a go myself (same parameters), as I always do. I like my mock, but not much more than yours. You will not like it if you think a CB is a must-have.

1) DE Taco Charlton
2) TE Evan Engram
3) Edge (projected to OLB) Carl Lawson
4) WR Chad Hansen
5) G Jordan Morgan
5) Jamaal Williams

Like? With the exception of Engram. It down right sucks! Sorry I know you can do better. The packers will draft at least 2 RB. Must have CB? You don't have any. Hansen is to slow and small school. And we already have Geronimo.

Hansen ran a 4.5 40 and went to Cal Berkeley. You know, where Aaron Rodgers went. In the PAC 12.

I saw 4.53. 6.1 Jr. which means he'll get slower. Cal is a bigger school now.

Sometimes the draft doesn't go as you want. It's not like where you can pick anyone and rationalise that they should still be on the board. Taco Charlton is more boom-bust than I like, but he has a high ceiling and would fit nicely with Mike Daniels and Kenny Clark. Engram was too good to pass up on at #61, which meant very little was left at CB.

It seems to be a feature of Walter's board that CBs go quickly. Just for you, stockholder, I had another go (same parameters). This time I got CB Conley, WR Zay Jones, WR Cooper Kupp, OLB Ryan Anderson, RB Samaje Perine and guard Danny Isidora.

You have to be careful of doing too many attempts with the same parameters, because you soon learn who the undervalued draftees are (in this version, for example, edge rushers Lawson and Anderson are often available in round 3, a real bargain, imo). That leads to you planning your draft accordingly with foreknowledge. In other mocks center Elflein and Pocic often fall to round 4, in others guard Asiata is around in the 5th, or CB Tankersly in the third.

Conley and Jones are better. Forget Kupp. I still think Jones goes higher. TT won't trade up to get him. TT would trade up to get a CB in the second. But like you had in your first draft,No CB! (This secondary is going with House,Randall, Rollins and Gunter. ) Anderson is another good pick, but to low. So if your putting Anderson OLB and Taco Charlton DE in your draft. Aren't You better off taking Watt first? And instead of a CB, Willis is the better DE/olb in the second. The 2 players that can take this team defense to the next level are Watt and willis. But I don't believe TT will Take Watt unless pressured too. I believe TT will take Melifonwu S/CB. over Conley.

Comes down to what gives GB the biggest upside swing late in round 1.....Is it OLB TJ Watt, who everyone agrees is only a shell of what he can be as an NFL 3-4 OLB in 2 years. Or is it one of the many talented size/spd/Athll CB's that could make the major impact by locking down a wide CB spot right away as a rc & allowing others to fall into more suited positions at CB.
GB's pass coverage and pass rush was like a solid F anytime they played a QB with a legit NFL pulse. I've never seen NFL pass catchers as open as they would get going vs GB's CB's.

Have to replace Shields pure "Elite" nfl speed at CB, the kind of speed that feels like that player isn't scared out there because he trusts his own speed to run with all these monster/fast #1 WR's out there.
But at same time, must be so much better at pushing the pocket vs Pass Plays with the DL group and making the QB actually have to move off his spot & maybe run into more sacks coming from our edge guys.

Worst move was adding the RB group into the "NEED" group heading towards the draft. All it would have taken was a NFL terms, smallish deal to get Lacy back in GB to combine with Montgomery. Then the position has two talented and fairly young RB's that know the system. Now its a total wildcard if u have to draft a RB.....many of them don't translate to NFL.....cap room was available, why let a RB who was puttting up 5.1 yds a carry last year move to a NFC title contender & rival, when a 2/3 yr 10-13 mill. deal could have locked him up. Micah Hyde signed a deal over 30 million....Dont think its as easy as people say to find a real NFL RB who can get u positive yards on terrible blocked running plays like Lacy always did.
It would have let them focus on the pitiful defense & shore up the OL group.

I like Lacy and would rather have him than not, but RB was a "need" even if he had re-signed. And there's no way I would have committed that much money/time to him given his issues. He was playing for a contract last year and still couldn't keep the weight off, and only lasted 5 games (should have been 4) before going down. Maybe that's just a coincidence, but history suggests otherwise. And maybe he needed/wanted a fresh start and wouldn't have accepted the smaller deal anyway, and we don't know what GB offered. As for the terribly blocked running plays, that story won't change for him in Seattle unless they are able to overhaul that OL in a hurry.

My take on it is that Seattle's offer (and the structure of the weight clauses, etc.) seems about right. Again, I'd rather have him than not, but I don't fault him for going or fault GB for not making more of a financial commitment. I guess we'll see soon enough.

Well , he's gone, so that's that. I don't think Montgomery will be able to consistently handle more than 15-18 touches. They need a big back to run clock in the 4th quarter, to keep defense off the field.
