Packers Question of the day - All-time: Linebackers

Jake Ryan: gone for an unspecified amount of time.

Blake Martinez: possibly done for the season with an MCL sprain, however, could potentially play in the final couple of games if the Packers manage to make a playoff push.

With the inside linebacking corps currently in shambles - much like several other positions, which all-time Packer inside linebacker in his prime would you assign to this team to help bulk up the heart of the front seven?

Since everyone is gonna say the great #66 I'm going to go with some inside linebackers from the 90s-00s. How bout Bernardo Harris to help shore up the run defense and Nick Barnett for blitzing and some covering responsibility.

It's a shambles because Thomas and Bradford should have been Cut. McCray should never have been traded. I blame Moss for the LBs! First I would move Frackrell inside with Mathews. Instead of Thomas ,go with Barnett on passing downs. I then would keep perry, and peppers on the field. That leaves Jones, Elliott to sub for Peppers and perry. Regardless you have to find a spot for Jones. I still prefer him at DE ! And I hope the packers don't lose him because of Moss. He's a 4-3-4 player and someone will get a steal from the packers. #66

The indomitable and the one and only Ray Nitschke, #66 NFL HOF. The rest are just pretenders. Happy Thanksgiving to all
Packers fans and their families. Thanks, Since '61

Was there anyone else that was a Packer that played as well at that position. Nope not a one that I can remember ever at all.

No one has come close. He was not just a great player he was the leader of the defense. He played defense the way it should be played with a take no prisoners attitude and he played through injuries. My favorite Nitschke caption is: "Didn't have a nickname, didn't need one!". Thanks, Since '61

"Didn't have a nickname, didn't need one"

Love that quote. What a classic for anyone to use but summed him up perfectly Now that was a football player. Thanks for the reminder.

Outsdie of 66...the last recent LB that I thought could have played inside with an attitutde (outside of Claymaker) was Wayne Simmons. He played OLB, but he had the leadership, kick-ass, and aggressiveness that has been missing.

The packers do have a long list of LBs to pick from and it's hard when there were different schemes over the years so I have excluded all the true pass rusher/sack guys that could play on the line and picked ones who could be todays ILB.

I'll start with Brian Noble because he was the first one I saw in person. I was scared to talk and hesitant to shake his hand because it was as big as my head and I was shy. Mike Douglass, John Anderson, and Johnny Holland all come to mind also.

I would settle for Nick Barnett right now, or a healthy Brandon Chillar or Desmond Bishop. The Claymaker needs to wear the mic in his helmet Monday and line up everwhere to make an impact. He can do it all when he isn't targeted. Everyone else can pad thier stats.

If there was another #66 ready to play he would be here. I'd take him in a heartbeat. You can't pick players like him off of a tree. I'm sure I left out some older players but that's my generation and the game is so different now.

I forgot to add Wayne Simmons R.I.P. I think he was a Wolfe draft pick and got traded but I remember him being there for the superbowl run. That roster was amazing.

Tim Harris was great but he was more OLB/DL so I don't see him helping at ILB. I cannot blame him for his desire to go somewhere else but that must be considered too.

Number 66! No one has come close, pure mean streak and would play with one arm and one leg.

Two OLBs I think would be outstanding today:
Dave Robinsonand Fred Carr.

They are probably the only ones in my lifetime other than Nitschke, and Ted Hendricks. Would love those two together.. Can you imagine 66 and the Stork together.

Nitschke was a one man wrecking crew. You paid a price if you ran the ball. He was the best I have ever seen at the position in GB.

Ted will kick the tires on a undrafted free agent with zero expierence and throw him into the fire- putting him in a position to loose- then we can blame Capers.

Desmond Bishop would bring some much needed thumping to the run game and inside blitz.

Nick Barnett was an animal, a worrior, an on the field leader and motivator of the defense.

Doesn't get his due here. Never did. Was mishandled and disrespected by TT. Wouldnt let him in the superbowl picture in the year he played and contributed. After being the defensive leader for years.

I cannot stand the Aj Hawk hate, never could. The guy was a star as a 43 OLB in college and when he was drafted by the Packers while still using a 43 playing his natural position check the stats. He was moved inside in the 34 and admittedly was a different player. However the year we won the Super Bowl Hawk had a fantastic year where he was selected to his only Pro Bowl. He is the Packers ALL TIME LEADING TACKLER. All you people talking about him making tackles 10 yards downfield and jumping on a pile are repeating things youve heard or read other people say about him. Besides, whats a LB supposed to do 10 yards downfield anyway, not make the tackle? The guy was a standup guy, very down to earth when I met him in Green Bay and was great with the community and most of you shit on him. These are the same people praising Barnett now ( who was a great Packer) but would rip him back in the day for making a tackle and doing his samurai celebration while down 20 points. Enough of the Aj Hawk hate because he and Bishop were perfect compliments to eachother at ILB, unfortunately it was a short lived duo.

Short time in Green Bay, but "The Stork" (Ted Hendricks) was impressive. He played 15 years, mostly with the Raiders, but is a HOF player who was always available on Sundays and played with passion and effectiveness.

Would like to see Ray N., Dave R. (Robinson), and Ted H. (The Stork) lining up with our Packers defense
