Packers Reportedly Meeting With Texas A&M Commerce Receiver

The Green Bay Press Gazette says Green Bay will bring in Ricky Collins for a pre-draft visit.

From Wes Hodkiewicz over at the Green Bay Press Gazette

The Green Bay Packers have started lining up pre-draft visits with potential late-round picks and undrafted free agents in hopes of cultivating another diamond in the rough.

One prospect that seems to have caught their eye is Texas A&M Commerce receiver Ricky Collins. He's scheduled to meet with the Packers before the NFL draft later this month, according to a league source.

As Wes notes, Ted Thompson likes using his 30 official pre-draft visits on small school prospects like Collins. (His recent meeting with Bryce Petty notwithstanding...) Last year, the Packers ended up signing two players as underafted free agents that they had in for pre-draft visits, linebacker Joe Thomas and offensive lineman John Fullington.

Ricky Collins is 6-0, 200 lbs and ended the 2014 season with 44 receptions for 1,053 yards and 13 touchdowns for Texas A&M Commerce. (You can see more videos like the one below over on his Hudl profile.)

Wow as usual we will be loaded at receiver. Now lets do the same at CB and ILB.

To me there are no diamonds in the ruff so to speak. First, most of the guys you see in Div Ii are there for a reason: too small, too slow, not on the same level as the div one players.
The other issue, when you draft a guy from ND your getting a guy who was coached by the best versus some guy who was coached by a guy called coach.
All this add's up. the player needs to learn big time, has to perform way over his head, has to be physical and its just 99% never works. Look at all the undrafteds that have failed at GB. Or went elsewhere and were third string.

Here is the list of former D2 players in the NFL as of last November, including John Kuhn, Mike Pennell, Jeff Janis, Brandon Bostick, Allen Barbre, Nick McDonald, Charles Johnson and Jumal Rolle--just to mention current or former Packers (apologies in advance if I missed anyone while skimming the list).

I'd be in favor of them using most of their visits for small school ILB's. Then in UDFA time, sign 5 of those ILB's. If they hit on just one, it will have been worth it.

I don't watch much film of college players either. I leave that to the scouts, both amateur and professional, usually. But I clicked to watch what was linked here.

I was struck by how little the defense resisted him running all over the field on many of the plays in the video. He'll face better than cursory coverage in the NFL. At least he didn't drop 'em, I guess.

I'm not saying he is no good. Just that most of the highlights did little to show that he is any good. There were a few nice plays in tight coverage. But that was the exception, not the rule.

Hopefully, Ted isn't bringing in ILBs and CBs because he doesn't want to tip off other teams that he's interested in certain players. I'm looking at you Spielman and Reggie MacKenzie!

You want a no name MLB from a school nobody cares about. Heeney from Kansas looks pretty solid.

The kid looks good, but it was a highlight reel after all. Looks like he could be our 3rd string QB too. The guy we really need to go after is the designer of the field. That lion was awesome.
