Packers Select Arizona State Defensive Back Damarious Randall

The Sun Devil will play cornerback for the Packers and could provide help as a returner.

With their first selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected Arizona State safety Damarious Randall. The Packers plan on playing him at cornerback.

One NFC defensive back coach, per Lance Zierlein over at NFL.com, had this to say about Randall.

"I have him as the top safety in this draft so that should tell you what I think of his ability to play with his size. Just give me a good player."

Ted Thompson seems to share that sentiment, saying "He's just a good football player" several times in his press conference after the selection.

Below you can see our live reaction to the pick. It was mostly bemused befuddlement.

I like the 1st round pick. When you lose your starter at CB & the best off the bench, you have to use a high pick. --- If you can't at least slow down the opponent's passing game, you lose.

CB was far and away the biggest concern I had with the roster. Based on what I saw over the 2nd half of 2014, I think they have enough on the roster to at least be good enough everywhere else. DB is where they had losses that hurt. More competition on the back end is a very good thing.

[Just prior to the Packer pick]

My friend: "So, what are you hoping for here?

Me: "I'm not picky, I would be happy with defensive line, ILB, CB."

TV: "The Packers select Damarious Randall, Safety, Arizona State"

Me: "Huh............so............huh...............interesting."

Malcolm Brown and Randy Gregory sitting there for the taking… I don't know why I even bother watching the first round of the draft anymore. Ted's record in early rounds pretty dicey. Guess I'll tune in Saturday to see which Pro Bowlers we're adding.

TT always adds Pro-Bowlers on day 3 of the draft.--- For instance,---- ah, ah, ah, ..... I'll have to get back to you with names later. --- (all kidding aside --- if this guy can play, the weakest part of the "D" will be better --- The NFL still throws the ball all over the field)

Playing at a pro bowl level and being a pro bowler are two different things. One has to do with popularity while the other deals with actual talent.

Look at Nawrocki's book on the draft.

In it he has a 'Scout's take' on the top prospects. The (un-named) scouts take on Malcolm Brown was he couldn't find spot for him in the 3-4. He is (in the scouts opinion) more a 3 tech. Just because he is higher rated on the draft sites you visit doesn't mean he has that rating on the Packers board. If he doesn't fit he slides down their board.....elementary.

As for Gregory, Packers were not the only team top pass, every team in round one passed. The agreement is out there (amongst NFL staff) that he is too much of a risk.....same as La'el Collins and Dorial Green-Beckham. Got to look at each of them as a person, as well as their qualities as a player.

Well Ted definitely threw us a curve ball here. I hope he knows what he's doing cause we needed a cover corner ...and got a safety. I'm so confused...oh and Anthony is gone now how awesome. If we don't get Kendricks Dawson McKinney or Perryman this draft is lame. Not to act like the sky is falling but the ILBs are about to pour off the board and if we don't act fast it's gonna be a looooong Friday.

It's all about "replacement" value. Corners are extremely expensive to resign or replace in FA. I'm going to assume Randall is a corner. First round corners are locked up for 5 years on rookie deals. That's big money saved.

The same thinking applies to receivers and pass rushers.

ILB's are cheap to replace. You wouldn't want to waste a 1st round pick (and 5 years of rookie money) on one of those.

Ted's either extremely clever, or too clever by half. I believe Ted thinks he scored the best corner in the draft. Randall's not going to be a safety. He's not going to be slot corner. He's going to be a boundary corner playing opposite Shields, assuming Ted's gambit pays off.

Aaaaaaand another thing all we ever hear about is how we are a finesse team or whatever and we need to get more physical and this guy has tackling issues? Really ...a guy that can't tackle and is going to need to play a different position than he is used to for our FIRST ROUND PICK..wow. If this was like our 3rd or 4th round it might be ok but this is just not. Pick a decent mlb or corner and move on.

Ted Thompson is at the podium. "We feel fortunate we were able to draft Damarious Randall that late." Obviously TT thinks very highly of DR.

Heard that DR was the best defensive back at ASU and also played outfielder in baseball which probably convinced TT of his coverage ability.

I am also convinced that the Packers' secondary is now as strong as can be.

Sorry, bear, but he was not the number one rated safety, at least not in the draft guide. Collins was. And I know he appeared in the safety specific section, but I was talking about his overall position in the top 100 players. I'm still not able to find him listed there at all. Collins is there at 14, then the number 3 safety at 55, Prewitt.

Randell was the #1 rated FS on Draft Scout which is a pretty decent site. http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/probe.php?genpos=FS&draftyear=2015&...

If you click that you'll see that for yourself. I'm not a huge fan of the pick, not with Malcom Brown sitting there. BUT after checking out some of Randells measurables I understand the pick a little better. Putting the BPA aside for a minute Randell actually tested better than Trae Waynes in the 20 yard shuttle and 3 cone.

Time will tell on this pick but I think for a team 5:07 from a SB birth last year, couldn't stop the run in both playoff games last year, Malcom Brown would have been a steal at 30. Without knowing if Raji will hold up, Guion suspended a game or 2, and both being FA after this season, DL could very well be next years area of need like ILB this year and Safety last year.

Thanks for the link and info. Really my point was that I found it a little amusing that the Packer oriented draft guide I ordered would neglect to include who ended up being the Packers first round pick in their overall rankings. :P

I also feel better about the pick after reading up on him some more. I'm surprised DL wasn't addressed, but given that I still think we could use help in the secondary, I can argue against the pick much, either.

It isn't that Randall can't become a fine CB in the NFL. He has definite strengths and a few concerns, and he will have a good coach in Whitt. The issue for me is whether he was close to being the best prospect available. I would have thought Malcom Brown was BPA by a wide margin. I view Randall as a need pick. If he is a reach, it is not much since I think someone would have picked him in the next handful of picks. I don't have a problem with passing on Gregory at all.

The ILB that can cover some of the more athletic TEs in the NFL was not in this draft, as I understood things. You need to cover those guys with a DB, preferably a big strong, fast Safety (like Morgan Burnett).

In thinking back to the second half of 2014 and through the offseason so far, it seems very clear to my way of thinking that DB was a bigger concern than front 7 run defense.

Megatron may not be losing any sleep over the Packers adding Randall. But assuming Randall can play, the team is better equipped to make it back to late 2014 level than it was before the draft, IMO.

I think this will be a good pick. I don't know as much about Randall as other prospects because he was mostly viewed as a S and to be honest I wasn't looking at safety's.

But his flexibility and versatility to be able to play Corner/Safety will be a very good asset to our defense.

The more I see of him, the more I like. He could be another play making type of player that we need in the secondary.

yeah, I didn't watch any tape on him. But the more I am seeing of him, and knowing how Capers can move guys around and be creative, the more I like.

I think they could use him similar to how they used Woodson a few years back. When he was kind of all over the place.
I think he will start out as a CB though.

yeah, I would say he is similar to Hyde. Can't have enough of those guys though.

No ILB was worthy of a first round pick. I was upset that Ted didn't draft Brown. He looked like a great value at a need position. I will say that for a guy who supposedly can't tackle, Randall sure makes a lot of them. 106 last season - more than Landon Collins. But there is no doubt he was picked to play CB not Safety.

For me its simple. I am not the Packers GM, thank God.

I never would have drafted Aaron Rodgers, Jordy Nelson, or Clay Matthews. We already had Brett Favre, Matthews lacked experience, and we had (Driver, Jennings, and Jones, and Finley to catch the ball).

This is why I don't fault anything in the draft until years down the road.

Really? I was all over Rodgers in 2005 -- and i liked Favre. I just thought it the cost/benefit analysis was too good to ignore. For me that was a no-brainer. (Apparently not for the first 23 teams that year)

The rest of those picks were a bit too creative for me to have predicted or advocated. They were two steps: trading then picking. The picking is easy to picture, but for some reason the trading part is hard for me to imagine. I do remember being OK with the Nelson pick after the fact. I liked his tape & i think teams should build on their strengths.

Can we finally do away with the myth that TT will take the BPA? Brown was a top 10-20 player and with Raji and Guion both on 1 year deals, I'd have taken Malcolm Brown like that genius in N.E. did. Then again, I'm not paid to make those decisions so once again, in Ted& Co. I'll trust.

Do you know if Brown was the BPA on the Packers Board? He might have been on Mel Kipers and Mike Mayock's but was he on the Packers board? I know some scouts were saying that Brown wasn't viewed as highly to some as to others.

Also maybe they thought Brown wasn't a great fit for what they do on the DL?

I will trust Thompson, he has been right more then he has been wrong.

"I know some scouts were saying that [insert name here] wasn't viewed as highly to some as to others."

That's the story of this draft. Not to mention, now that game tape is easier than ever to get, the number of armchair GMs on the interweb has exponentially grown, meaning you can always find someone rating your pick higher or lower than where you got him. If we need DL help, and Brown was there, then it seem logical to conclude that Ted didn't pick him for a reason.

Do you remember Louis Nix the 3rd last year? Supposed first round talent that fell to the 3rd. Just because you see something in mock drafts doesn't mean the prospect is similarly valued in draft circles. And before you say anything about him going 2 picks after our draft slot, remember that Belichick hasn't been very good in the draft. His specialty has always been patching through FA.

Randall is a gamble in the sense that TT believes he's an elite corner prospect. Here's the test. If Shields is covering Alshon Jeffrey, can Randall cover Kevin White one-on-one?

I think there was a realization which set in when Williams departed, something like, "OMG, who is going to cover all these receivers in the NFC North." Chicago is suddenly stocked, Minnesota is rapidly improving, Detroit has Johnson and Tate.

It isn't really known whether Hayward can cover elite receivers outside. Clearly, the Packers aren't convinced that he can.

It's crystal clear to me that they don't expect Randall to be a faster version of Hyde. They expect him to be a pure cover corner. The main job of these players is to cover elite receivers and prevent catches, not tackle. Shields is a very poor tackler, yet he makes $10 million a year. Why? Because he can cover Calvin Johnson.

Is TT trying to make me forgive ASU for their failed win vs UW from 2013? Welcome to the team, Kid, but I'm still angry about that one.

Do not dislike pick, TT has his reasons but I do wonder what he thought of Malcolm Brown and Eddie Goldman.

My God we are an amazingly egotistical bunch. What makes us think that by watching a few videos...maybe a couple of games...we know more about how Randall fits this team better than Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthey, Dom Capers, and Joe Whitt?? These are guys that have done a little work on this draft class. These are guys who have been around football a while (not just watching it 8 hours a weekend, going to a few games, and spewing venom on a blog). Are they going to hit 'em all? Hell no. But for give them a little credit for knowing what they are doing. The number of people on here who assume they know a lot more about football, football teams and football players is really amazing to me.

You certainly have a point, especially when your team has a good GM like TT. However, if you really believe that, there's little reason to have a comment section, and quite a bit of the purpose of this website vanishes.
