Packers Vs. Patriots - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm

Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from the Packers' last game.

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons. In general, I try to focus on the less obvious or things I didn't notice watching live.

Dominant Dillon - This was Dillon's first carry of the game and it set the tone he needs to set - decisive and take no prisoners. No more foot shuffling, looking around for different paths. Put your foot in the ground, pick your hole, stay low, hit it with full momentum and use those quads. I have a new equation: Dillon + Decisiveness = Yards gained. It ain't rocket science. Also, check out the blocking on the right side of the line. Myers and Runyan double-team the nose tackle, Tom keeps the DE at bay with one arm and minor help from Musgrave as he heads downfield to take on his next target. Musgrave needs to learn not to look back at the running back there. if Musgrave keeps his head down and stays with his block, Dillon breaks into the secondary for a bigger gain.

Love Pumps - There's some good and some questionable here. The good is that we can see Love learns his lessons. Love had a pass knocked down last week against the Bengals when he tried to sidearm a pass under an oncoming rusher's arms. This is the same situation and you see Love instinctively starts to go to the sidearm throw, but pulls it back and puts it over the top of the rusher instead. Now to me, the decision to try to complete that pass at all was a bit questionable. There are two players bearing down on Deguara and the high throw forces him to extend and take an unprotected hit. - I'd rather see Love just throw it away there.

Shove it - Everyone is praising AJ Dillon for his blitz pickup on the Jayden Reed TD pass. And yes, he did what was needed, but hold on there - Dillon basically just had to fall on the rusher who was going to the ground. Why was he going to the ground? Check out the timely shove Christian Watson gets on the blitzing DB. Gotta give some credit where credit is due. Also, check out Musgrave neutralizing the defensive end to Love''s blindside while Zach Tom is busy shutting down the defensive end out on the right tackle island. That's nice work by Musgrave and Tom looks Bakhtiari-like on that play.

thanks again Al. On that one play where we got a td, I did notice that Love kind of knew where the ball was going and threw it quickly. Ya that may not work against real defenders. That ball could have just as easily been picked because the receiver had someone right there next to him. Rodgers would not have thrown that ball.
Gonna be interesting this season.

the main reason Rodgers wouldn't have thrown that ball is that he didn't feel the need to play preseason football.

in green bay, you'd find rodgers relaxing on the sidelines pretending for the cameras that he was paying attention...

If it won’t work against real defenders he’s probably worried that it will work against his Vikings.

Rodgers is irrelevant here. Favre would have thrown it side arm, the ball would have burned Deguara’s fingers as it sails 40 more yards to the nickel for Favre’s 879th interception!

If you listen to JLove’s explanation of the play, Reed ran a great route while Love waited for the window to open, that is until the linebacker was out of position. The ball placement was perfect so there’s little chance the defending DB has a chance at a pick. And there’s no way the db covering Watson is going to leave him in the red zone. Not sure what you saw that would have resulted in a pick.

Rogers has made that throw many times. Normally that play does not require the receiver to chip block and the receiver (Watson here) ends up further in the back corner of the end zone. When run that way, the window appears larger because the corner is not in front or as close to the catching receiver. I think I have seen that play several times during the Rogers era.

That last one, Al, on the Jaylen Reed TD, was a beautiful play designed tag team by Watson and Dillon.

Despite not getting his number called much throughout preseason, Christian Watson has surprised the hell out of me with his improved conditioning coming into OTAs/TC, and all the good stuff he's doing away from the play. His blocking has been really fun to watch.

Team leader. 100%. We're watching him in the process of assuming that role.

Good call!!!

Play one- I don’t like Dillion to start that Deep.
Dillion + Decisiveness = Getting Stuffed>
Play Two- Bad Habits? This isn’t college. Rule #1.
Play Three- Tom looks like Bulaga. Keep him there.
Loved your 3 plays. Tell it like it is!

Seven yard depth is standard procedure for an I-Formation RB. The FB is closer with a dbl stack, which I prefer with a lead dog. Play #two was just a bad design from day one. Toss it from the playbook. Musgrave showed good extension locking up the edge guy.

Re-look= at the LOS He's 8 yds back.
I'd go 5 with Dillion. Especially 4th and inches.

It is not a goal line situation, or a power set. He is six yards behind Love which is fine and makes his take 3-4 yards from the QB's out-stretched arm for the handoff. If he's closer, the pulling O line may create traffic. If you imply he doesn't have the burst to hit gaps faster, I concur.

There is no one on our team named Dillion! This should be to Stockholder.

I wonder if he does that intentionally, to imply the many millions it will cost us to keep him next year. While I like #28's attitude towards constant improvement and his work ethic, our O line has much more to do with his production increasing. He's a runner that needs blocking, he's not going to get around the edge.

Third or fourth and short? Good luck finding somebody else as effective, given the right blocking. Which is up the gut. Exactly what we don't have with Myers at C.

According to PFF (or the better known PFFT...), Zack Tom was worse than any Packer on the Planet has ever been in any game (preseason or regular) during that NE game or somewhere in that ballpark. Now who was that guy that was pushing his man in front of Dillon, about 10 yards from the line of scrimmage. I saw a 50 on the Jersey and it sure looked like Zack Tom, but who was that bulldozer? Are they using the jersey number 50 for multiple players this preseason? I guess PFF scores that as a negative play because Tom wasn't really blocked then when he did hit a NE player it was at full steam so I guess more negative points for Tom because he had a head start.

It works the other way too. Ha Ha Clinton- Dix used to get high PFF grades because he would snare a couple picks off of overthrows and tipped balls. Meanwhile, your eyes were telling you he was playing 20 yards off the ball and running away from plays so he wouldn’t have to tackle.

Good to see Musgrave doing some blocking. He doesn't need to be a great blocker, he just needs to be a good enough blocker. Maybe he already is. More importantly, his ability to get downfield and catch passes will force the defense to spread out, creating more space for our ball carriers. It's been a long time since we had a really good pass catching tight end. I'm excited.

I have been very impressed with Musgrave. The Packers may have found their TE after years of futility, tease, and throwing (mostly wasted) millions at FAs.

Kraft is seemingly mired in the rookie flu...not unexpected, especially for the NFL TE position. He's still thinking about what he's going to do pre and post snap. Looks lost on some plays.

Meanwhile, Musgrave's play speed is amazing for the young man. He can be a much better blocker...he wasn't asked to do much of it in college. He will be...and I agree, he's OK already. Imagine when excels at it! Wow.

I do believe Gutey will be adding another TE after cutdowns.

I would like to see Musgrave run deeper routes or catch something in stride, so I can guage YAC ability. Speaking of YAC, Kraft looks like a bull to bring down.

Nice pick up Al.

1st clip - well that was something we were all b*tching here whole last season, if not longer. We were praying to put the ball in AJ Dillon hands when he is already almost at top speed. When you are running fast, every decision (even bad one) has to be sudden. But Dillon's mass and force of the punch very often ends with lot of bodies on the ground. He should use that more often, especially on the second defensive level...

2nd clip - yes, you are right. Sometimes is better to throw the ball away than to risk injury of your co-player(s) or possible interceptions. But, on positive side of that throw is that Jordan showes us again that he is fast learner.

3rd clip - In game, when watching it, it looks to me that Dillon blocked defender by falling prematurelly, but with your notice, now I was able to see why he was going that low... And kudos to Watson!

Play 1: Looks like a great blocking job by Kraft on Judon, and he kept fighting right through to the whistle. You love to see that kind of effort against a really good player.

Heel yeah! I see Kraft as an unsung hero. Even if he doesn't get a lot of snaps, he has a way of getting in there and making a difference.

Wish I could have seen the game. Have a chance tomorrow. My first recording on NFL they showed the Steelers-Bills instead of the scheduled Packer game. I was kind of upset (was probably my provider).

What I see from Al's clips is teamwork. A concept that will improve this team and take it to unexpected heights.

Thanks Al!

Thanks, Dr. Al. I rewatched the game and still completely missed that block by Tom on AJD's bulldozer impersonation. Tom is quite the talent. His quick feet and balance for a big man is sublime!

And I missed Musgrave turning his head...that was a good catch. Great example that in football, especially the NFL, doing the little things right can produce bigger results.

I watched the beginning of this breakdown on the Packers D against the Pats and Wyatt looks like he has a long way to go. Wahle brings him up on one play but there's a few others he's really not accomplishing anything. Seems like if his speed doesn't win right from the start of the play he's lost.

https://youtu.be/tnUT2nSkjMQ?si=elR3GGW4I5gLA_z-

I still think his main role should be as the 3T in the 2 DL looks. That's 70% of the snaps anyway but IDK who the 2bd DE would be in base. Maybe go big and put Slaton at DE and Ford at the nose. I guess we'll see in a couple weeks if Wooden and Brooks are ready for primetime. I don't think you want Brooks playing a lot of DE.

DE is where Brooks had the most experience at Bowling Green. Lesser competition, but good production.

And he played DE manning the edge. Brooks, so far, has looked very disruptive playing DL. With Enagbare looking good and Gary coming back...I think Brooks will be difficult to keep on the bench. Packers should have a very good pass rush.

I am still concerned about the run D. Still getting gashed.

I agree with LL, Wyatt isn't showing much so far. Brooks is better. Wooden is flashing. I also notice Slayton making plays.

I wrote this last year and again this year. Wyatt attacks the shoulder (usually the outside shoulder) of the opposing OL and if that doesn't work, does a spin. If that doesn't work, the play is over for him.

Wyatt, while better this year, is essentially doing the same thing this year. If he doesn't penetrate into the backfield quickly, it isn't going to be pretty.

LL, I agree with you and Kenny Clarke should (finally!) get some designed time on the bench to keep his legs fresh. Our main concerns are elsewhere, but rotating our D line properly is still hugely important.

It's nice not to have to rely on one (or even two) players! We have a solid 6, maybe even 7, #93 - 99.

Al,

that first play is one I wanted a closer look at, thank you! Hopefully #88 learns from this tape. There's a lot going on in there but yes he could've been more effective simply by focusing on his assignment.

I'll still take a four yard run anytime we can get it.

That last play was absolutely beautiful! Good to see #9 throwing some blocks. Our entire O line room should be studying film of Bakh, the man puts on a clinic every time he sets foot on the field.
