Podcast: Knee-Jerk Reaction to Packers First Round Pick, Datone Jones

Brian Carriveau and "Pigskin" Paul Guillemette break down the defensive lineman the Packers took out of UCLA.

As soon as the Packers made their first round selection on Thursday evening, Cheesehead TV wasted no time breaking down the choice of UCLA defensive lineman Datone Jones. I enlisted the help of "Pigskin" Paul Guillemette who did the defensive line analysis for our 2013 edition of Pro Football Draft Preview. We look at the positives and the negatives of Jones, and as you'll hear, there are more than a few questions about how he'll fit and how he'll be utilized in Dom Capers' defensive system.

With all the comments on Jones weight, two things were not mentioned.

First, D.J. has a lean build, no excess body fat. He could easily, easily put 15lb on.
Second, the Packers could have taken a heavier guy who still had some pass rush in Sly Williams, who went just after the Packers pick. It is significant to me that they chose D.J. over S.Williams

I believe this pick heralds a morphing of the Packers defense to one with faster guys who are effective in space. That is in line with the way the league is moving at the moment, with spread offenses and the read option.

Adds depth to the D-line. I like the pick. I wouldn't be upset with another DL pick in the next 2 rounds either. LB,WR or RB coming up.
