Poking the Bear: Packers aim for Season Sweep over Chicago on Sunday

Don't let the records fool you. The Chicago Bears are no slouch.

In fact, just throw records and playoff stipulations out of the window right now. Although the Bears will want to play spoiler to a 7-6 Packers team clinging to their playoff lives at a possibly sub-zero degree Soldier Field this Sunday, they'll need to pull out all of the stops to do so.

They just got back starting wide receiver Alshon Jeffery on Monday, who is set to return from his four-game suspension in time for the Bears' second and final meeting with the Packers this season. He'll be another factor for Packers' defensive coordinator Dom Capers to scheme for outside of the rising star in their backfield, Jordan Howard, who just needs 31 more yards to eclipse 1,000 on the season.

Outside of their 17 players on injured reserve, the Packers will look to overcome injuries of their own on a much more minor scale.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is dealing with an ailing hamstring that was tweaked in the Monday night win in Philadelphia. On top of that, another calf injury that happened on just the third play from scrimmage on Sunday against the Seahawks. He won't miss a game through the remainder of the season when his team needs him the most, and that's coming from the man himself.

Not that Rodgers would miss an opportunity to fit into his usual assailant role that he seems to embrace yearly against the Bears. In 17 career games against Chicago, he's thrown more touchdown passes (38) against them than any other franchise. He also has 13 wins under his belt when commandeering the Packers' offense against the Bears. A win on Sunday would complete the fifth season sweep of the Bears in eight years.

Unfortunately for Chicago, they'll get to face a quarterback who has been putting together one of the best stretches of his career through his last eight games. A silver lining to that, however, is how quietly efficient their defense has been all season.

The Bears rank 8th in total yards allowed, 7th in average yards allowed per game, 15th in total points allowed and 15th in average points allowed per game. They sport one of the league's premier front seven groupings, a unit that has defensed the middle of the field at an impressive rate. They've allowed a completion percentage of just 59.09% when opposing quarterbacks target the middle of the field. The defensive backs, however, allow 43.67% of deep completions but account for five of the defense's seven interceptions this season.

Just when the Packers are beginning to find their niche in their own passing attack, their 62.50 completion percentage at the middle of the field should provide a relatively easy task for the Bears' linebackers in shutting down. Despite the low completion rate, the Packers have averaged 7.59 yards per play at that spot.

In correlation to how well the Bears have been defensively, Rodgers will likely be limited to becoming, for the most part, strictly a pocket passer. In order to keep him upright, expect the re-emergence of the pistol formation much like at the end of 2014, preventing Rodgers from doing many three or five-step drops and put more emphasis on both his wounded calf and hamstring. The offensive line will be in for another critical test to protect the cornerstone of the franchise.

The Packers can win and continue their well-reported goal of "running the table", but all eyes will be on the 9-4 Lions carrying the division lead into New York against the Giants. Detroit losing any one of their next two games (NYG, DAL) and the Packers winning their respective match-ups puts them just one game back of the NFC North lead, setting up another week 17 thriller for the crown. They already own the tie-breaker thanks to their 34-27 win over the Lions at the end of September.

The Bears will be a tough game IMO. Bears are a tough gritty team. They don't have the talent due to injuries and whatnot, but they are a tough team.

I'm skeptical of how good the Lions really are and we will find out the next 3 weeks with the Lions, but the Bears played them tough. If it wasn't for 2 holding penalties and non pass interference penalty, the Bears might have beat the Lions late in the game.

Yeah, I thought the Bears got hosed by the officials in that game. I mean, call the game loose or call it tight but do it the same way for both teams. The Bears were playing pretty good, especially Barkley. I, too, am skeptical of the Lions. It's all Stafford with them and with his bad finger they may be done.

Those where legit holding penalties. They are going get called most of the time. The non-PI was a little dicey IMO, but honestly I'm not sure what PI even is anymore the way it's called.

I agree on the holding penalties.

If you watched the game, the calls were going against the Lions, earlier. What goes around...

Totally agree with your assessment RC. The Bears have been playing better as the season wears on. Additionally, the Bears are always motivated to play the Packers hard. It is the nature of this rivalry.

I'll add that their QB, Matt Barkley has played well against the Packers on other occasions. They are better with him than our favorite, Jay Cutler.

No looking ahead but this would be another nice game to keep the Packer machine oiled and humming along

"I'll add that their QB, Matt Barkley has played well against the Packers on other occasions."
Really? He only played once against the Packers: going 6/15 for 81 yards; he threw for zero touchdowns and two interceptions.

I'm not saying take him or the Bears lightly, but this is no world beater...

Barkley filled in earlier this year when Cuter was out and that other clown Hoyer got hurt. 2 picks.

I'll take Huntley or Callahan over Barkley anyday

The Bears' coaching staff has improved and it will be a very cold game with the Artic burst. But I'm still positive Rodgers can find Jordy and Adams. Hopefully, the defense (again) plays hard to win the game.

A little more than a year ago I was lamenting the fact the Pack failed in their quest to even the all-time series after trailing in it since 1933.

Instead they fell two games back again after losing in November 2015. They have a chance again this year to even it up and then take the lead next year.

The football Badgers caught the Gophers who were leading since 1902. Now it's the Packers turn.

The Bears would love to knock the Packers out of contention. I expect the Bears to play very emotional and tough for three quarters. If the Packers can match their intensity, then they will win.

If the Pack can't handle a 3-10 team this late in the season with a playoff spot on the line, they don't deserve to play in post season. --- Looks like the wind chill could be -5 to -10 degrees. -- Not good, especially for the fans.

Tarynfor12, What's your early take on the game. GB-7 up from an open of -4. Over/Under dropping. 41, down from 44.

Bears are 9-19 under Pace & Fox.
Soon to be 9-20

Bears lack difference makers/ All Pro type players. Bears need to start over again.

This game might be a problem , the Packers are probably looking ahead to the Vikings and Lions, they need to be focused on the Bears right now who have a good defense . MM better set the tone early and take care of business .

I'm thinking the same thing. They just whooped the Seahawks in what was an emotional game for them and they have the Vikings and Lions sitting in front of them., Lets not overlook what's on the plate this weekend. That S*** happens all the time around the NFL, though I think this team is finally focused and should be ready to play.

OMG.... Both his injuries didn't look like much when they happened. Last week he came down hard but the CB wasn't right on top of him. I was surprised he was out after that. The Packers are a better team with Cook, if for nothing else he commands attention.

Rivalry game, better than their record, decent coaching, Jeffrey back... yada, yada, yada. Sure, Chicago is not Cleveland. But If GB doesn't beat Chicago then the PACKERS are slouches and have no business in the playoffs anyway.

Wow, this has the makings of a scary game. The Bears don't want GB to tie their overall win/loss record. Chicago has nothing to lose plus, this is the oldest rivalry in the NFL- never a given. With that in mind, Go-Pack-Go!

The line on this game, at this point, has dropped back to GB -5 1/2 , GB-6. Still ok, but not what I wanted to see. As up as Chicago will be for this game, I don't see GB losing this one. I think the weather (cold) will definitely be a part of this game. I still think it's relatively easy to pick GB to win this one. Whether they can win this game by 7 or 8 is the Big Question?? I'm still on GB, but watching it Very Closely.
