Preseason Game Recap: Packers Physical matchup with Patriots ends in suspension with a Patriots 21-17 win

The joint practices were physical and so was this game as Patriots come away with the 21-17 victory after game-suspension.

Before the game ended with a suspension agreed upon by both coaches, the Packers and the Patriots had a bit of a physical, and penalty-riddled preseason matchup. As we all saw in the headlines joint practice had a few scuffles this week with the Patriots looking like the more physical team.

The Packers came out and tried to knock down that narrative as they backed up their Quarterback Jordan Love as a minor scuffle broke out after he was hit as he gave himself up on a run with a slide. After this however, things were a bit sloppy. There were a few good things to take away from this game, and a few that really need some fine-tuning.

Let's get to the recap.

First Quarter:

The Packers opening drive got off to a good start with Jordan Love under center. Aaron Jones started it off with his only snap of the game running for 6 yards before exiting the game to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines. He doesn't need to play Preseason, but it's nice to see him suit up anyway. AJ Dillon then had two runs for a combined 10 yards before a shotgun snap was fumbled and recovered by New England. Jordan Love seemed to call for the snap but was looking away as the ball came in from Josh Myers. Possible mistake by either party, but nonetheless, a bad play and the Patriots take over. Worth noting on this drive, Rasheed Walker got the start at Left Tackle with Zach Tom at the right. Normally this could've been a start for Yosh Nijman, but interesting to see Walker get the nod over him.

With about 12:49 left in the first quarter, the Patriots started off their first offensive drive with Mac Jones at Quarterback from the Packers 18 yard line and were met with a False start to start the game, backed up five yard. After the penalty a pair of catches for Kendrick Bourne got the Pats down to the Green Bay 6 yard line, 1st and Goal. The Packers Defense held firm forcing third down until a Mac Jones incompletion was called for defensive holding on Carrington Valentine in the endzone. Personally I believe it was a bit of a ticky tack call, but it's one you'll likely see on Sundays anyways. The penalty put the Patriots on the Packers 1 yard line where Rhamondre Stevenson was able to score the touchdown and put the Patriots up 7-0.

Jordan Love lead the Packers offense back out where he started off by hitting Luke Musgrave up the middle for a 10 yard catch. An AJ Dillon 3 yard run and an incompletion later, Jordan Love hit Romeo Doubs with what looked like a pass on a rope, Doubs making the catch with a defender on his back to get the 1st down seemingly ignited the offense in spirit a bit. But, unfortunately this was the only highlight of this drive as the Packers were then forced into 4th down where they attempted a hard count but had to receive a delay of game before punting to the NE 17. A penalty on NE for Offensive Holding pushed the return back 9 yards so the Patriots would start at their own 8 yard line with 6:50 left in the first quarter.

The Patriots got out to a good start on this drive when on 2nd down Rhamondre Stevenson had a 23 yard rush to the Green Bay 35. However, the Packers defense answered when three plays later Kingsley Enagbare sacked Mac Jones for a loss of 9 yards. Enagbare combined power and speed  putting his right hand on the Tackle's shoulder forcing the lineman back into the Quarterback for the drive-killing sack.

After the punt, the Packers took over on their own 7 yard line with 3:46 left on the first quarter clock. The drive started out with a False Start on Elgton Jenkins and a 4-yard run by AJ Dillon before the Packers got their biggest offensive play of the game at that point. Jordan Love hit Romeo Doubs 42 yards downfield but it was initially ruled incomplete. Packers coach Matt LaFleur then emphatically threw the challenge flag and he was successful as the call was reversed. This placed the ball at the 50 yard line with Green Bay now cooking. The very next play Jordan Love took off on an 11 yard scramble. As Love slid to give himself up, Patriots DT Sam Roberts came in diving on top of Love which ignited tensions. The entire Green Bay Offensive Line came to the aid of their Quarterback and a scuffle ensued. Roberts was later called for a 15-yard Unnecessary Roughness penalty, placing the ball at the NE 24 with 2:29 left in the quarter. It was great to see the Packers line show up in defense of their Quarterback. When you have a new starting QB like Love you want to make sure the line has his back, and they certainly did there. After a 5-yard AJ Dillon run, Jordan Love threw a dart to rookie WR Jayden Reed who made a great catch for the touchdown and his first Lambeau Leap. The game now tied at 7-7.

The Patriots then had a good kick return bringing them to their own 39 to start their drive with 1:37 left in the first quarter. On 2nd down Colby Wooden got a great push stop for no gain, but the following play Mac Jones hit Demario Douglas for a 15 yard gain to sustain the drive. After another short 2-yard pass to Douglas, this was the end of the 1st Quarter.

Second Quarter:

The second quarter started out with an incompletion for the Patriots when Safety Justin Owens gave a little bit of a fake blitz before jumping back in coverage to bat down the pass. The Patriots saw redemption from this though when Mac Jones hit Kendrick Bourne on a 17 yard pass placing the ball on the Packers' 27 yard line. But that redemption was short-lived. Kingsley Enagbare made his presence felt again when he came on the rush from Jones' blindside batting the ball out of Jones' hand for the sack-fumble and then Enagbare recovered the ball as well at the Packers 38-yard line.

Sean Clifford then took over at Quarterback for the Packers with about 14:15 remaining in the second quarter. It was the Emanuel Wilson show once again as the young back handled the football five straight plays. One catch for 14 yards and then four runs for 28 yards. This placed the Packers at the New England 23 with 11:52 left in the second. Wilson definitely making his presence known in the battle for the third running back position again. On 2nd and 9 following the runs, Clifford hit Malik Heath for 10 yards. Heath with a great stop and turn-around, shook the defender losing the tackle and getting the 1st down. After a 5-yard penalty on the Patriots of illegal user of hands, Patrick Taylor headed on a rush to the left side dancing his way into the endzone for the 8-yard touchdown. The Packers then caught a delay of game penalty on the extra point to be enforced on the kickoff. But the extra point was good, and the Packers now lead 14-7.

Bailey Zappe then took over as the Quarterback of the Patriots with 9:46 left in the second quarter. Zappe would remain the QB for the rest of the night. The only highlight from this drive came on 1st down when Lukas Van Ness set the edge and was able to get the tackle on Patriots running back Kevin Harris for no-gain. Otherwise, after going three and out, the Patriots punted.

The Packers took over at their own 17 with 8:44 left in the second quarter. Second down saw Sean Clifford with a great throw and a catch by Grant DuBose for 21 yards to the Packers 40. Clifford decided he was going to show his blocking abilities the very next play when he threw a block on a NE defender springing Emanuel Wilson for 7 yards. After this however, the Packers drive started to stall. Minus a fourth down conversion run by Patrick Taylor, the Packers were later forced to punt with 3:03 left in the second, pinning the Patriots at their own 15 yard line.

The Packers defense thought they were getting off to a good start when on second down, rookie Karl Brooks sacked Bailey Zappe for a 7 yard loss. This was negated however, by an illegal contact penalty on Shemar Jean-Charles for illegal contact. This gave the Pats an automatic 1st down. The Packers then forced three incompletions however, yet another penalty was called when Kiondre Thomas was called for what I'm going to say, was a terrible Pass Interference call. I felt it was more instigated by the receiver, but nonetheless, the call goes in favor of the Patriots putting their offense at the Packers 42 yard line with 1:08 left in the Half. On a pass deep right to Tre Nixon, rookie Safety Anthony Johnson Jr. came over the top to make a great pass breakup. This great play was short lived though when Bailey Zappe hit Kayshon Boutte for a 42 yard touchdown. It looked like Packers CB Carrington Valentine went to make a play on the ball but just got beat as Boutte took off for the endzone tying the game at 14-14 with 0:56 remaining in the half.

The Packers took over at their own 9-yard line after a holding penalty backed them up on the kickoff. On 2nd down a Sean Clifford pass deep for Malik Heath was intercepted, however it was negated for pass interference on Pats defender Christian Gonzalez. This placed the ball at the Packers 32 with 0:40 left in the half. Sean Clifford then put on a bit of a short-passing show to get the Packers into Field Goal range at the NE 34 yard-line with only 0:10 remaining in the half. Rookie Kicker Anders Carlson then came out for a 52-yard attempt and nailed it. The young kicker absolutely drilled the attempt leaving room to spare for a longer distance. The Packers were now up 17-14 with 0:01 remaining in the half. A Patriots kneel-down would then end the half.

Third Quarter:

The third quarter started with the Patriots on Offense. Carrington Valentine made a nice play on 2nd and 7 for the NE 23 breaking up a pass with a hit to the receiver, but this became all for not when the very next play Valentine was called for Defensive Pass Interference placing the ball at the NE 37. It was a bit of an up and down night for Carrington Valentine with lots to learn from. On 2nd and 10 with about 11:40 left in the 3rd quarter, Keshawn Banks nearly had an interception going the other direction when he jumped a screen pass. Instead it was only tipped but great play recognition by Banks to break up that play. The next play Karl Brooks showed his face again rushing Bailey Zappe to an incompletion and forcing a Patriots punt.

The Packers took over with 11:24 left in the third and seemed to get off to a good start with an 8-yard Emanuel Wilson run and a nice Malik Heath 15-yard reception. But they were then forced to punt. After a penalty for offensive holding on NE, the Patriots would take over at their own 22 with 8:49 remaining in the third.

The Patriots then put on a methodical drive. They just kept running at the Packers with short runs and short passes absolutely exhausting the defense. The only real highlight for the Packers might've been another showing by Karl Brooks when he made a good stop on Pat's RB Kevin Harris for a 1-yard loss. Three plays later however, the Patriots faced 4th and 2 from their 6-yard line. After Packers Linebacker Brenton Cox stumbled on the play, Bailey Zappe was able to head on a QB scramble for 6 yards and practically walk into the endzone. The Patriots lead 21-17 and that was the end of the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

The Packers took over at their own 23-yard line to start the fourth quarter. On a 3rd down conversion off a 3-yard Emanuel Wilson run, Packers Center Jake Hanson was hurt. It was revealed to later be a shin injury as newcomer from a few weeks back, Center Cole Schneider took over in the middle of the line. After a timeout for the injury with 13:37 left in the 4th, Clifford hit Malik Heath yet again, this time for 25 yards to the Patriots 40-yard line. Following this play there were two runs from Emanuel Wilson combining for 9-yards and a nice leaping catch by Cody Chrest for 6 yards.

A few plays later though, the Packers were faced with 3rd and 7 at the New England 25 when Sean Clifford hit Malik Heath again, this time for 7 yards and a 1st down. Unfortunately, there was a scary injury on this play to the Patriots' Isaiah Bolden. He collided with his teammate while attempting to make the tackle and appeared to sustain a neck injury. After laying motionless on the field for a bit, Bolden had to be carted off. Players obviously shaken by this, and the remainder of the game being only 10:29 of meaningless Preseason football, Packers coach Matt LaFleur and Patriots coach Bill Belichick elected to suspend and end the game.

The Final score after the suspension was 21-17 in favor of the Patriots.

Offensive Player of the Game:

I'm giving the Offensive Player of the Game to Malik Heath. Heath had some outstanding catches in this game and showed why coaches have been talking about him a lot after practice. Heath hauled in 5 catches on 5 targets for 75 yards. He will certainly make roster cuts interesting in a few weeks as this performance will need to be considered.

Defensive Player of the Game:

The Defensive Player of the Game is going to Kingsley Enagbare. Without question Enagbare will be in the EDGE rushing rotation this season. Tonight he put together 2 big sacks including a sack-fumble and fumble recovery. He was an absolute animal in the action he saw.

What Went Right:

The Defensive front looks stout. The addition of Karl Brooks and Colby Wooden is only going to make them better. Both those guys were everywhere breaking up plays and forcing their way into the backfield. There's a lot of hope that those two alongside TJ Slaton and Devante Wyatt are going to help break Kenny Clark free to show the true game-breaker he is.

What Went Wrong:

Penalties in the secondary. The Packers were penalized a total of 11 times for 85 yards. A good majority coming from pass interference and defensive holding. Carrington Valentine showed out last week, but he showed this week that his physicality and play-making tendencies can sometimes be a fault. He has to be cleaner.

Another "What Went Wrong" has to go to the injury to Isaiah Bolden. You never like to see a player get hauled off the way he did causing the game to be ended. Here's to hoping his injury isn't very severe and he makes a full recovery.

Next week we move on to Preseason Week 3 where the Packers will be taking on the Seattle Seahawks. This is a game I will be attending in-person as it will be my three, almost-four year old son's first Packer game. As a result your Game Recap will be a bit delayed as I navigate my way through stadium traffic and make the two-hour ride home. But rest-assured I'll be here!

Thanks for the report. I want to add that refereing was also slopy.

Greg, congrats on getting your little one to his first game! The moment will last a lifetime.

Great info here, thanks; you saw some things I missed.

We agree that the PI call on #43 Kiondre Thomas was serious bs. Not that we expect him to make the roster anyway, and it's just a preseason game. I guess refs need practice too.

Patriots CB Isaiah Bolden has feeling in all of his extremities, and it was determined he suffered a closed head injury per CNN report this morning. GOOD!

This was a solid review, Greg.

K Andres Carlson showed he might be finding his sweet spot with 2 XPM and a 52 yd. FG that by many estimates probably would have been good from 60-70 yds. He had only those limited opportunities, but the rookie turned in a good showing.

Jordan Love started the game handing off to Aaron Jones for 7yds, and AJ Dillon twice for 5 yds each. Jones looks great, yanked after his lone run. It looked too easy, and may be a window into what fans could see often to begin the 2023 season.

After a nowhere play action with NE bringing pressure, that ugly botched snap in shotgun kills GBs first drive with a TO the Patriots recovered on our own 17.

WHERE THE HELL is Josh Myers snapping that ball? That freaking ball had to have been 7 ft. high!!! Love is 6-4, and he had to reach up, and a foot to his right, unable to get a hand on it. Love wasn’t even ready for it.

This kind of bungling of routine snaps has to end. Any and every shotgun snap should be routine and automatic for a player of Myers’ pedigree.

Count me all-in with replacing Myers with Zach Tom on our starting OL: Bakhtiari/Jenkins/Tom/Runyan/Nijman

Those are our best 5 OL anyway, so let’s cut the crap and roll with this.

Patriots went through the Packers D to score a TD like a hot knife through butter. Once again, Joe Barry playing his NT set out wide in 5T leaving the middle WIDE OPEN. Rasul Douglas follows up not playing press man, giving outside leverage for an easy NE completion. Mack Jones follows with a scramble up the middle stopped by Rudy Ford and Darnell Savage at the Packers 2 yd. line. Quay Walker was thrown to the side clearing Jones’ path. Valentine with a PI in the end zone looked a little rocky tach by the refs. It was a hold though. The ensuing 1yd TD run looked automatic. McDuffie missed on his run blitz, and Ford is no good at getting near a run play.

Myers put the Packers in that hole, and Barry shoveled dirt on it. I’m hoping to never again see Barry’s alignment of our DL with the middle unchecked, unmanned.

3 problems straight out of the gate as I begin reviewing:
1. Josh Myers needs to be replaced by Tom
2. Joe Barry’s open center DL alignment
3. Joe Barry CBs still giving too much cushion

LaFleur better address this.

Thankfully, the Packers #1 O and #1 D responded. Musgrave & Doubs showed well throughout their snaps. Enagbare balling out bigtime puts some icing on this Packers front 7 cake. Man, has he been impressive.

#96, Roberts with the late hit on Love. It was good to see both Runyan & Tom tearing into him after his pouncing on the sliding JL. Another cheap shot by NE, and the Packers answered BIG.

Musgrave. Dillon. Walker. All 3 with huge blocks to give JL a perfect lane & time to throw to Reed for the TD. Musgrave completely stoned #31 on a blitz while Dillon simultaneously destroyed the blitzing #2 Mills, pounding him into the turf.

I’m not negating some shoddy run D and play by some starters, as I believe THIS may have been the last time we’ll see some 2022 starters as “starters.” I look at our preseason more as a tool for talent evaluation to make their best decisions, while at the same time improving readiness.

I agree that Josh Myers may have worn out his welcome with the starting 5. Zach Tom of course is the preferred replacement. But I almost prefer Tom at Right Tackle. But you want your best 5 in there and I don’t think Myers is even with the best 7.

Boy, has he ever, Greg.

The Packers best option now is putting Tom at Center to ride through 2023, unless Jenkins is willing to move back to C as he had played C in college, or Gutekunst can acquire a better replacement.

Yeesh. That was an awful start and TOs leading to quick, easy scores can help lose a lot of football games.

I think Tom is best suited at RT. Put Rhyan in at RG and maybe move Runyan to C. If Tom does move to C, put Yosh at RT. Leave Bakh and Elgton where they are, on the Left. Rasheed Walker can be either Bakh's or Yosh's replacement at T.

I do not want to move any G for any reason at this point. The next up best is far worse than the benefit. I can’t see us not bringing in veteran interior help, or severely regretting it if we don’t, but I don’t think counting in that to start all season is wise.

I could be wrong, but starting Walker at LT could have been an audition to see if he can handle a top NFL DL test...and the Pats have a very solid group.

I think Walker played well and he may have shown he can be the "first in" back up T. That is a very encouraging development.

Now you can move Tom to C and Yosh to RT and not have to shuffle the line much in case of an injury at T...Walker can come in and Tom can stay at C. Without confidence in Walker, a T injury would probably necessitate Tom going back to T, and a corresponding change at C with Myers and disrupting synergies by playing next to the same guy.

Bakht, Jenks, Tom, JRJ, Yosh is the best 5 with Walker back up T, Myers at backup IOL. MLF talks this talk all the time but rarely walks it.

I agree...Myers may not even part of the best 7 now. Walker has taken #6 and Jones/Tenuta are probably competing for #7.

Astute, LP!!!

Great observation, and I agree. I do believe they’ve got a good idea on their Top 5 alignment, and Myers pretty much confirmed their beliefs. Walker getting this 1st team reps an essential completion of that test to confirm how they will proceed.

Conversely on D, Rudy Ford starting v. run is like the Myers look in shotgun… Ford just can’t access the running lane, constantly getting blocked out. That explosive run in Q1 with NE up 7-0 at 6:05 went right over him, after Ford was easily plowed into the turf.

I think Hollins might be in trouble too, with a poor arm tackle on same play, and a ton of other talents showing better. McDuffie? He might be yet another, as I think Eric Wilson has shown himself to be more reliable.

Just when the masterminds of CHTV solve the O line puzzle, we have to turn to DBs? Lol

#20 R Ford at 6' 210# is tied for the third fastest player on the team, assuming Stokes returns to form. #30 Moore is .02 faster, and Bo Melton ties him at 4.34. Rudy has at least 10 pounds over all these other players; while that makes his speed that much more impressive it doesn't explain how he's boxed out so consistently. I wouldn't call his tackling "solid," either. Our speed is concentrated at S, while at CB only Ja is 4.38 and everybody else is 4.4x or 4.5x. #29 Rasul Douglas is our second slowest DB at 4.59, with Sapp being the slowest at 4.62.

All this proving that measurables don't determine anything.

#29 Douglas and 30 Moore at S with 34 Owens as backup would be stout, but I don't think MLF is ready for that much change. #4 behind them might still be a battle? And if Moore is out for a bit, it's even trickier.

ILB while Campbell is out is another puzzle. #24 Tariq Carpenter, 46 Phillips, 45 Wilson are the choices in addition to #7 Quay and 58 Isaiah McDuffie. #46 seems to be the weakest of the bunch but I can't say he's an obvious cut.

Agree about Walker LP. Walker played well enough against the Bengals to get an audition against the Patriots' ones and he did well against a very good Pats D-line. I think the Packers have found themselves another late round gem and a fourth solid OT.

I am not sure the center - QB exchange was Myers fault or Love's fault. On the replay, it appeared Love looked away at the moment Myers hiked the ball. Not sure I can blame Myers for that. I would like to see Tom get more time at center in the next preseason game. The development of Walker could allow that to happen.

Myers thought a Pat jumped and one did move (per LaFleur) but he was sufficiently far back not close to invading the neutral zone. Myers just pulled the trigger and was also high and to Love’s left. Not on Love in any way.

I was encouraged by our ability to get some running room through good blocking from Walker, Tom, Jenkins and Nijman. In the center not so much, again. Rhyan and even Hanson and Newman did seem better at that than Myers particularly and Runyon the starters. This too is a familiar pattern centered around Myers.

CW,

exactly! Even when Myers isn't getting beaten, even when snaps aren't bumbled, running behind him at C is a no-go. That's a weakness that can severely limit if not destroy the team's chances. This was evident last year.

Bakh might not always push his assignment 15 yards off the ball but it sure seems frequent. Jenkins isn't quite that dominant, but moves the line very consistently. Extending that dominance across the whole line opens up our run game from anywhere; this should be the #1 focus. Nothing would help JL10 more.

Love could have prevented that turnover at two opportunities: he could have caught the snap, and he could have grabbed it on the ground. Zach Tom could also have pounced on it.

Hopefully MLF and staff can get to the bottom of exactly what went wrong in that exchange, but there are many other reasons to acknowledge that Myers is probably the ninth best O lineman.

The snap problems might legitimately be partly caused by JL10 does things differently than AR12. That alone doesn't make replacing Myers at C the only solution, but so much points to this being a good idea ...

I hope that you are right. I am increasingly having doubts that this coaching staff is that rational. The Nijman move could as easily be a signal that they are looking to trade Nijman.

I find it odd that they are willing to play Love with Walker (who justified it) and Nijman previously, but yet feel unable to start anyone but Tom at right.

I just don’t get a good feeling about Butkus/Stenovich since his promotion and LaFleur’s decision making ever since the switcheroo in the championship, through the annointment of Hanson, the Hanson/Newman combo, the refusal to practice Yosh or Tom at RT and then, foreseeably, needing to play them without reps and now the whole C/RT mystery while Newman and Myers get worse and Runyon seems plateaued

That Myers isn’t one of our 5 best OL seems hardly to be controversial at this point, at least to those outside Lambeau.

CW, we're looking for excellence in coaching and having to wonder if there's even rationality.

We know this team isn't "complete" this season, but putting the best pieces in place is still a vital function. I do wonder what Gutey thinks about all this ...

Both Meyers and Love messed up. The defendant moved on the hard count but was not in the neutral zone (also it was a pretty late snap even if he was). But in those hard count situations the QB has to be ready for the possibility of a quick snap like that. Even though the ball shouldn't have been snapped the QB has to be ready for it. The next time Love did a hard count, I noticed that he kept his eyes on the center for an extra beat to be sure the ball wasn't coming.

"Meyers thought there was going to be a flag for encroachment and a free play. Apparently neither the refs nor Love saw what he saw."

Meyers just needs to SEE his ass to the door and not let it hit him in the ass on the way to the end of the bench!

The dude has gotten progressively worse each year and has been his absolute worse this summer IMO. How many more botched snaps do they need to see?

Somebody here said Myers did everything right on that turnover and should've snapped it because he saw a DE jump. I don't understand that, nor do I agree.

My only hesitation with Tom at C is he hasn't been given very many snaps there and the duties are important. I still want the past 2 or 3 weeks back with Tom consistently at C, and experimenting with who's at RG. At LG Jenkins is dominant no matter who's at LT, I think we should keep him there. It's not even about whether he's a better C than Tom at this point.

When Bakh isn't playing the case can be made for Myers at C with Nijman at LT and Tom at RT. I'd love to see Myers redeemed but playing every snap at C hasn't made him better, something needs to change. One possibility is have Myers practice at C with the twos, and with limited playing time behind Tom maybe he progresses.

Myers-JRJ has been the weak spot of our O line. Tom at C allows that to be evaluated: if it's fixed it's safe to assume Myers was the problem and JRJ at RG is solid now. If it persists then replacing JRJ should be at least explored. Maybe Myers shores up RG between Tom and Nijman. I can't think of a different combination likely to make the right side of the line as good as the left.

Failure to make any adjustments is exactly what I saw last year. The turnover is on the players, what the coaches do to adjust is on ... HC.

I still see this situation as the single biggest issue with the whole team. In the context that the O line finished last season pretty well so returning it is not a horrible thing.

Neither the fans nor the media knows who is on that #1 OL behind closed doors. I hope they’ve been working Tom at #1C. If not, why the hell not?

This garbage has been going on for weeks.

PFF brutal to Tom in the running game and only moderate in the passing game. They thought Runyon was our best run blocker and graded him 87 over all, by far our best OL.

On the other hand they had Tom as our worst offensive player, with a desperately poor run grade and at best average passing rating—32 overall, which is garbage. Let’s just say they liked Nijman a lot more.

Yeah. It’s crazy.

We can kick & scream all we want, lead a horse to water, and all that but…, or is it “and?”… here we are.

I still think this is the best OL alignment:

Bakh/Jenkins/Tom/Runyan/Walker
Nijim/ Jones back up Tackles
Rhyan backs up Guards
Myers backup center

Wait for cutdowns to add a 10th or replacement if either is needed.
***
Clifford's poise is far beyond a typical rookie. He has a fairly quick release as well. I'm comfortable with him as the backup.
***
If the Packers keep 6 WR's, Heath will be the 6th.
***
Wilson should be the 3rd RB. Outside of not seeing, or I missed, his blocking, He has some juice running and had a nice catch for a good pickup as well. One more game should make his case.
***
I'm glad Valentine had a bit of an up down game. Obviously he is trying to make plays to showcase his talent, but a reality check was needed in the preseason as a learning experience. Mystery as to why he lasted until the 7th.
***
The Dline is going to be better this year by a long shot. Now if Barry can get out of his own way this defense could actually become one of the better ones in the league by years end.

Yes on Heath improving his roster chances last night!

#31 Wilson might be making his case for the roster simply because you can't expect him to stay on the PS. I haven't seen him on ST yet, maybe he's forcing the issue that RB has to give him reps there.

Pressure from our D was significant, and against a good defense. Hoping for complementary football this season isn't just a pipedream.

While Emanuel Wilson has shown us some flash, I still feel that Patrick Taylor is our RB#3 just because of his pass blocking/blitz pickup skills, his STs play and that he does everything we ask of him when he is on offense. If Wilson does go to the PS, I feel some other team will snatch him up, unless those rules have changed. We may have to keep 4 RBs, just to protect Wilson.

I've liked the idea of at least starting the season with 4 RBs, because they each bring something different. That and high probability plays until protection settles in and WRs are a bigger part of the O, without risk.

Obviously I have no idea what strategy or plays they're going to run once the regular season starts, I just think starting out with air raid is riskier than need be.

Sounds like an 8-9 team from what I'm reading. Jones will get some yards, yada yada yada, but wont be a game breaker. Love so far seems to be above average but again the pass d will kill you in the long run. Your stuck with Joe B I'm afraid to say and they had ever op to dump him and refused. He has his guys playing off for one reason, they lack speed and need a head start. Meyers aint going anywhere.
Again could have dumped him anytime but didnt.

Our DBs don't lack speed, Vikings fans were dropped on their head as a baby.

40 times:

Stokes 4.24
Moore 4.32
R Ford 4.34
Savage 4.36
Ja. 4.38
T Ford and Nixon 4.42
Owens 4.43
Valentine & Thomas both at 4.44
Hooper 4.45
Gaines 4.46
Ballentine 4.47
SJC 4.52
AJJ 4.54
Leavitt 4.56
#29 R Douglas 4.59
Sapp 4.62

5 burners, with another 8 incredibly close behind. Speed is not the shortcoming.

Don't read his stuff.
He has about four canned criticisms that he repeats for players that has little to do with actual observations...
"not smart enough to play in the NFL"
"has gained weight"
"not fast enough/lost a step"
"not motivated/only playing for free agency"

Bakt/Jenkins/Tom/Rhyan/Nijman would be my preference, if Rhyan can learn to pass block. Walker coul back up left and right tackle spots, and so can Nijman if needed. Keep Runyon, Jones, Newman and Myers and try to stock Tenuta and the rest on the PS.

I'm not ready to say Rhyan is ready as a starter yet, but he's proved he's improved. Swapping Tom to C inherently changes things at RG, trying to evaluate that has to happen one step at a time. Once Tom is playing C consistently then they can evaluate if JRJ is our best RG.

C & RG was clearly the weak spot on our O line last season, and we have the talent to improve that.

I'm not sure Newman is one of our best 10. I haven't seen an injury update on Tenuta, he might be on IR for a while. Mt Caleb hopefully comes back 100% soon.

At 5:45 in Q2, Rhyan and Yosh BLASTED #96 Roberts at least 4 yds backwards on 4th & 1, and that is right where Taylor ran for the 1D conversion. Wow!

Roberts was no match for both Rhyan & Nijman. It was like they were picking up a refrigerator and moving it.

PFF was probably taking a beer/restroom break on that play.

I have zero concerns about Tom's blocking, PFF's eval of his 17 snaps aside. Probably one of the best 2nd year OL in the NFL right now.

I think this week they have to run out the starting o line and quit experimenting. They know who the best 5 are and it is time to rep them for week 1.

They may have been running the #1 OL frequently behind closed doors. Let the bares first exposure to Bakh, Jenks, Tom, JRJ, Yosh be after they first kick off to the Pack on September 10th.

Lame excuses- Myers needs to stay at Center.
1. Patrick was a cut and was good Enough at center. Remember?
2. Rodgers was after Myers; on when to hike the ball.
3. Myers and Love must be on the same page.
4. Tom needs to stay at RT. And last year it was too problematic.
5. Tom might be the LT next year. Maybe Jenkins.
Which means this might be your OL next year.
Jenkins, Runyan, Myers, Ryhan, Tom.
Because Walker and Nijman are back-ups.

And after watching Brooks, Could Clark stay at NT?

I can't guess on how the d-line will shake out, but Brooks was making plays. Very encouraging performance.

I don't see why Nijman shouldn't start.

Only reason for Myers to start is if Bakh isn't. Myers might be one of our 9 best O linemen, but not best 5.
