Surviving Sundays Without Adam Czech

As many of you who come here regularly know, one of our bretheren, Adam Czech has been battling stage four colon cancer for the last 12 months. Adam was fighting hard through multiple rounds of chemotherapy and surgeries. He sought out the best doctors, from the University of Minnesota to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. All options were considered and whatever could be tried was tried.

EDIT: Here is a link to a GoFundMe Campaign for Adam's Wife and Children.

Alas, it didn't help. The agressive cancer inside of Adam just kept spreading and growing. The doctors advised Adam and his wife Julianna that there was little to be done beyond preparing for the inevitable.

Just two days ago, Adam was admitted to a hospice home, but it seems the man upstairs couldn't wait:

Adam's journey battling cancer over the last year has been eloquently documented by Julianna and Adam at CaringBridge.com. This is the link to his journal.

I first learned of Adam back in  2010, when he sent me a tweet about his wedding and how he worked the Packers into the proceedings. I asked him to write about it and he did here.  It's especially emotional to read now. A few months later I asked him to write for ALLGBP.com and he accepted. He hit the ground running and had been writing ever since, Adam wrote 693 articles for ALLGBP.com and another 88 since our move to CheeseheadTV.

Adam had a great and wacky sense of humor, but not in a joke-telling sense. He would look at you with a straight face while saying something fairly ridiculous, all the time just enjoying your confused look. Besides the Packers, Adam was a huge fan of Pro wrestling (specifically old school wrestling) and heavy metal music (groups like Slayer and Mastadon), neither of which seemed to jive with his laid back, chill demeanor.

Adam was a loving and devoted husband to Julianna and doting father to his two young sons, Edward and Reggie. Nothing mattered to him more.

I got to meet Adam and Julianna at one of the Throwback Weekend events and they couldn't have been more genuine, friendly and just plain "nice" to my wife and I. We had several great conversations with them over the course of the weekend.

Cancer is always a horrible thing, but to have it happen to someone so young with a loving wife and two small chldren is especially heartbreaking.

In the upcoming weeks I hope to come up with some plans for a way to honor Adam (perhaps a memorial web site) and set up an education fund for his children. I will need a lot of help with this project - I hope I can count on all of you to pitch in some way, some how.  If you have any suggestions, brainstorms or some particular expertise you can lend, please email me at:  "jerseyalgbp at gmail.com".

Those of you who come here and follow the Packers or football in general, often treat the fate of your team as if a matter of life and death. Sports is entertainment, and provides a nice escape from the realities of our existence on this planet. In actuality, we're all just here for the diversion.

During offseasons, Adam wrote a regular piece called "Surviving Sunday: Packers News, Notes and Links for the Football Deprived."

The question now is, how will we survive Packers Sundays without our friend Adam Czech?

Rest in peace, my brother.

Adam you'll be missed. Every Sunday during the season I'd go to Cheeseheadtv.com to see what you had to say. You maintained a sense of humor in your writing and I appreciated your opinions.

Rest in peace Adam and may God be with and watch over Julianna and your sons Edward and Reggie. I lost my Father when I was young, though not as your as Reggie and Edward. You've written some amazing pieces here at Cheesehead and ALLGBP.com, pieces your sons will be able to go back and read one day and enjoy their Fathers words once again.

God be with you and your Family.

Jersey Al,
Nice tribute to Adam. This Thursday will have to remember to be thankful that we got to share some of Adam's thoughts. Condolences to his young family. Puts into perspective just how much real life is so much more important than a football game.

Understanding something like cancer in the abstract is one thing. Understanding it emotionally in a specific situation like this is completely different.

He had everything to live for. Young. Married. 2 kids.

This makes me want to to simultaneously cry, scream, throw things, give up, and work harder.

I'm asking the question "why" right now.

Adam was one of the good guys and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Perhaps a fundraiser for a memorial brick at Lambeau is in order so Adam can be with his Packers forever.

Prayers and thoughts for his family.

I am so saddened by this news. Cancer takes so many good people along with my mother. It breaks my heart these things happen. He fought the good fight, I did not know him personally but he is in a good place. Bless his family and those around them help them and comfort them in the days and years ahead.

RIP Adam,

There have been 2 fathers in my neighborhood who died over the last few years from colon cancer. Perhaps a fitting tribute to Adam would be for those who have no done so, to get a colonoscopy asap. The dr's say that this particular cancer is a bigger shame because it is generally preventable and curable if caught early. I had one done this year.

Make something good come out of this.

Very sad news. I add my heartfelt condolences (and tears). I never met Adam, but I got to know him at least a little bit through his writing, and always enjoyed his sense of humor. He was winsome in the true sense of the word, and I feel like I've lost a friend.

I shall think of him and his family when I watch the game tonight.

The Czech family learned of Adam's cancer the time my wife was having a hysterectomy (and then later chemo). We followed the Czech family situation through the Caring Bridge site and realized how much easier our situation was. We prayed for them every day, hoping for a miracle. This is a sad moment in a long string of sad moments. I will just continue to pray for Julianna and the kids.

God bless Adam his wife and Children. So sad to see this happen, his optimism and courage are an inspiration. I lost my best friend suddenly this past week and my wonderful Mother in Law and I feel like I can honestly say I feel like I lost another close friend and family member. Strength to all this week my friends.

I am thankful to have known Adam, if only just a little bit through his writing. I felt a kinship with him being from the same area and sharing a love of '80s wrestling -- especially the old AWA. Out of all the fine writers who have contributed to CHTV and ALLGBP, Adam was my favorite.

Peace to you and your family, Adam.

Enjoyed Adam columns over the years, It was evident how much his family meant to him.

My condolences to Jersey Al and the CHTV crew and especially the Czech family. Sounds like you were lucky to have had him in your lives.

How about re-branding annual chtv Throw Back Weekendget-togethers as the annual Adam Czech Throw Back Weekend, and holding either auctions for stuff or just having a voluntary donation collection at CHTV get together events during throw back weekend, and put the money raised into the Czech boys' education funds?

My prayers and condolences go out to Adam's family. Cancer is a horrible disease that does not discriminate. We will all miss Adam and his wry sense of humor. Like Al said, football is a diversion and just a game and we need to keep that in perspective when dealing with life's ups and downs. RIP Adam!

Or something else in Adam's honor? Perhaps a scholarship in his name for a young an aspiring writer?

Football just isn't all that important in the grand scheme of things. Life is short and what we do with it means everything. I survived my cancer and when people congratulated me, it seemed really odd, like I had accomplished something. I didn't accomplish anything, I was given a gift. To Adam's family and friends, may you find comfort and healing in the days ahead. Any time a life is lost, humanity loses a piece of itself.

Been expecting this sad news eventually after the Caring Bridge post that he was coming home to hospice care, but didn't expect it quite so soon. As others have said, Adam's personality came through in his writing perhaps more than most other sports bloggers, and I think we all felt we knew him to a certain degree as an online friend regardless of whether it was one-way or two-way communication. Following his and Julianna's thoughts online through this ordeal makes this loss feel even more personal.

Tears and prayers for you and your family, Julianna, if you happen to read this. Thank you for allowing us all to in some small way walk with you on this journey. We are all proud to be part of Adam's Pack.

Al, thanks for a wonderful write-up. A permanent cheeseheadtv.com/adamspack memorial page, perhaps with a selection of his best writing, would be a lovely idea. As is a memorial fund for the boys' education.

Peace, Adam, and thanks for sharing your life with us. Godspeed, brother.
