The Lass Word: Why Vikings Game Is Important For Love

Critical test as Packers ponder extension.

When Jordan Love signed a one year contract extension last May he was essentially agreeing to a two year audition to become the long term quarterback of the Green Bay Packers.  When the curtain comes down on the 2023 season the two most important decisions facing the franchise will be who to hire as the new defensive  coordinator, and whether to pull the trigger on a new deal for Love after just one season as the starter.

It’s not enough for Love to show he is a good quarterback. He’s already done that. The front office must decide if Love has shown enough to convince them he is capable of leading this team to a Super Bowl.  To do that, the fourth year veteran needs to prove he can go into a hostile environment with the season on the line, put the team on his back, and play elite level football, pulling out a critical victory.

Which basically describes the exact situation the Packers face heading to Minnesota on Sunday. This should be a great measuring stick to see where we are with Jordan Love.  The Vikings, like Green Bay, will be playing for their playoff lives.  Their quarterback, Nick Mullens, threw for more than 400 yards against a decent Lions defense last week.  Jaren Hall will start Sunday night, but it probably doesn't matter. The Vikings, armed with weapons such as all world receiver Justin Jefferson, will likely be able to move the ball up and down the field and put plenty of points on the board against the Packers’ porous defense.  Can Love execute the offense well enough and consistently enough to keep pace?

The answer to that question may go a long way toward helping the franchise decide whether to open up the bank vault and make a permanent commitment to the former Utah State star.  Of course, there is the possibility they have already made that decision.  Perhaps they’ve already seen enough to feel they should lock up their signal caller to a cap friendly extension.  Statistically, Love is a top half quarterback. After fifteen games, Love ranks 13th in passing yards, 22nd in completion percentage, tied for third in touchdown passes, 14th in passer rating and 10th in QB rating.

He’s accomplished those ratings while operating most of this season with no real running game to lean on, and with a parade of injuries to most of his best receivers.  He’s also had the challenge of trying to overcome the terrible play of his defense.  The thing is, that’s likely not going to change.  Bad defense just seems to be part of the DNA of this franchise.  It’s not for lack of trying.  Green Bay has been through multiple coordinators including Dom Capers, Mike Pettine and the current Joe Barry.  They have used the top of their drafts to go heavy on defensive players.  Nothing seems to change.  The franchise has really not had an elite, shut-down defense since the championship team of 1996, which led the NFL in fewest points allowed, and the championship season in 2010, when the defense ranked second.  Reggie White and Charles Woodson are not walking through that door any time soon.

In some areas, Love is actually trending ahead of Aaron Rodgers’ first year as a starter.  He has already led the team to one more win than Rodgers had in 2008.  That’s not nothing, especially considering Rodgers had much more accomplished receivers to work with.  However, Rodgers made exponential improvement and rose to the elite level over the next two seasons, leading his team to a championship in 2010.  The team must decide if Love has the same potential.

He certainly seems to have the tools.  When Love drops back, sets his feet, and throws on schedule with his weight behind the ball, it explodes out of his hand like a rocket, usually on target.  But all too often he falls into the habit of releasing the ball while falling backward, or even back peddling, which not only robs him of velocity, but tends to add height to the pass, causing it to sail well over the head of its target.  Perhaps he spent three years watching Rodgers doing the same thing, and with much the same result.

There are reports that Love’s current contract has wording that prevents the team from extending him until May. And the Packers don’t have to extend. They could choose to watch him play next season as well. By the end of 2024 the franchise would have a pretty good idea as to what Love’s ceiling really is.  Whether he is capable of being significantly better than he is right now.  Of course, if he does turn out to be elite, waiting will only make the price go up higher.  Is it worth the risk to ensure the Packers don’t make the kind of mistake made by, for example, the New York Giants, who committed the big bucks to quarterback Daniel Jones, only to see him regress before getting hurt this season.  Or the Cleveland Browns, who mortgaged their future to acquire Desean Watson before knowing if he could come back to play at an elite level after two years out of the league.  So far he hasn’t even been close. Look at the salary cap mess the Denver Broncos now find themselves in after guessing wrong on Russell Wilson.

General Manager Brian Gutekunst has to be impressed by the fact that, with any kind of decent defensive performance this season, the Packers would be in the playoffs.  Three weeks ago they were sitting in the final wild card slot with their fate in their own hands.  But miserable defensive efforts against the Giants, Bucs and Panthers have them on the outside looking in. They still have a chance, but they must beat the Vikings this weekend.

Can Jordan Love get it done?  The answer will make Green Bay’s offseason decision on his future much easier.

I'm feeling pretty good about Jordan Love and hope he's here for a good long time. I laugh at the team to the south that cannot ever seem to get a good quarterback no matter what. Love should go for over 4,000 this year while I hear that the Bears have never had even one qb throw for that many yards EVER.

I'm feeling pretty glib until I read, "Bad defense just seems to be part of the DNA of this franchise." It occurs to me that possibly our incompetent D could be analogous to the hapless QBs of the Midway? Naw...

The season as a whole matters now. We are beyond the point where an individual game is critical.

I’d say he’s passed the first test—he’s almost exactly where Rodgers was after 15 games. Now we need to see how much more he can grow over the next couple of years.

He will be back next year and probably already be extended by the first snap of the 2024 season.

It also improves Gute's standing within the organization as the narrative from the day Love was drafted was that Gute would ultimately be judged by that pick. Maybe it gives Gute enough "power" to wrestle the hiring of the next DC from LaFleur. That wouldn't be much of a leap given how horrible LaFleur had been hiring assistants, but the real power play may wait until 2025 when Murphy is doing his goodbye tour. If Love continues to progress in 2024 Gute could negotiate a full return of the GM duties from the new CEO. Yes the future may be very bright.

MLF strikes me as a person who's open to input. Gutey shouldn't have to try to wrestle away decisions from MLF. The question is if they can work together to choose better staff, and it's much more than just DC that needs improvement.

Bill Belichick coming in as HC and possibly DC while MLF moves to OC and Stenavitch goes back to O line coach is my dream scenario I know won't happen. The team would be much better though.

it should be noted that Aaron's first year he was throwing to:

Greg Jennings (at the time the best route runner and most disciplined receiver in football)
Donald Driver (in his prime)
Jordy Nelson (OK, a rookie)
James Jones - JAMES JONES
and his best friend Ruvell Martin
Jermichael Finley was one of his tight ends.

He was also playing behind an incredibly talented line.

Whereas Love is throwing to the youngest receiver group in football, and playing behind a mash unit of an offensive line.

I wish they could keep them all on the field for a couple weeks in a row.

Maybe it helps them all grow together in the long run, however. Love has to get used to then all on a weekly basis.

One game is not going to make-or-break the contact extension for Jordan Love. He looks so so much better than so many starting QBs in the league; they are not going to draft a replacement for him. He's their guy. He's got the arm, the attitude, the posture, the maturity and the calmness under pressure. He will only get better with time, as he has shown this season.

Love can only put the team on his back and win if his teammates play better and the coaches coach better than they did the last time against the Vikings. This isn't the NBA where one player can will a team to victory with minimal help from his friends. The last Vikings contest was pretty brutal with a ton of penalties, four sacks allowed, meager contributions from the running game, and as usual, sieve-like pass defense.

So far Love has had a reasonably good season for a first-year starter despite being challenged by far less than ideal circumstances on the field; everybody "growing together" isn't easy on the quarterback.

I get the point of the article, though. You want to see your star quarterback play well on the road in the most meaningful game of the season. But whether or not we actually come away with the win is dependent on a lot of other factors, so maybe guarded optimism is the best approach here. Besides, I'm thinking that quarterback is the least of our concerns right now.

This game is the most important game of the season. Is he going to give us one of his best games, or one of his worst? Obviously, it depends on getting guys blocked and having receivers get open and catch the ball.

If we get one of his best games, we'll have a great chance to win. If we get one of his worst, probably not. But the Packers usually protect him pretty well (6th in sacked percentage), and when he's protected, I've seen him make some really nice throws. IMO, we'll have to score 21 or more to have a legitimate shot.

Ever since the day Love was drafted, it has come down to this: Rodgers is gone and the Packers need him to play well and win a big game. Three and a half years of work has come down to this game, and he'll deliver or he won't, and the players around him will deliver or they won't. I think we'll get the good Love and have a great chance to win this game in the 4th quarter.

It’s a team effort, and guys have to protect, and Love has to get rid of it, and receivers have to be open. You have to be able to protect if you want to pass.

JL10 has learned to get rid of the ball quicker, escape pressure, and throw it away. All of this contributes to pass pro stats and does not reflect a dominant O line.

So have the other QBs in the league not learned this? Because that would be surprising.

At some point, you're going to have to give some credit to the Oline, and to Butkus/Stenavich.

Because he’s had to learn to get rid of the ball faster? That seems to argue it’s him learning to ameliorate the OL issues not a vote of confidence.

It’s also partly due to LaFleur probably. Initially he was calling long developing plays and not offering much short. That led to the bizarre length of attempt leadership of the league, by a long way over the first 6 games or so.

Love has, I agree, become more willing to take the shorter option, but there are more opportunities to do so now. So one could argue that everyone is adapting to overcome the OL fragility, and of course the lack of consistent run game due to blocking.

LH, I think you're right and we'll see a good game from Love.

If it's left up to just him however, it's going to be a long day, even if it's his best game of the year.

We need to get the running game going with more than just AJ. That will help a bunch.

Getting good clean play on STs is a must.

Throw in a turnover or two with the D and we'll be good because you know they'll have some moments in the game that will hurt if we can't rattle the rookie QB with constant pressure and keep him from running wild.

This is totally a bunch of bunk. Just look at what is happening both around the league - from Pittsburgh to even now Denver. Love is here next year. I have been posting that bringing back Lafleur is important both for the development of Love ( for at least one more year for the HC) and for the offensive consistency with all the new toys. Barry of course needs to go along with maybe his whole staff. Teams that change staff as fast as they change their minds are always at the bottom of their division. Revamp the defense and get some passion into playing the game. I am a little concerned about the whole team mentality with respect to recovery time and the willingness to play hurt. I am almost hoping that we dont make the playoffs as we will get better draft positioning - but would also like to make it as it would kind of rub it in AR's nose as he didnt.

So, for you, rubbing in AR's nose slightly outweighs the higher draft pick, is that correct? If so, it appears Aaron Rodgers is rooting harder for the Packers to win than you are. I'm sure he would love it if you rubbed it in his nose with a Packers victory : )

Personally, I don't care about the draft pick right now. Nor am I incentivized by rubbing it in AR's nose. I say just win the game Jordan, make your own path, and I'll enjoy the ride along like I always have. GPG!!!

Keep hearing about the similarities to Rodgers. No. Rodgers coming out of college was already an incredibly accurate passer. He beat #1 USC completing 20 of 22 passes. Win #s are meaningless, different teams, lots of coincidence in the #s, but the eye test tells you that Love is a real NFL QB, but hard to see from his early play that he’s a lot better than Average. I think you can win SB with him but I do believe better QBs will be coming out of college and it’s worth the Packers time to continue to evaluate.

The situations are very similar. Not necessarily the players, though there are some similarities there as well.

But the point that Love was drafted compared to Rodgers were almost identical. The age of the predecessor, the year they were in the league, that it took 3 years for each player to become the starter. The numbers they put up at this point in their first year are very similar.

So when I talk about the similarities and whatnot, its more about all the parallels to the situations.

Here is another one.
When Rodgers took over in 2008, the Packers DC was Bob Sanders. He was in his 3rd year as DC. He was let go and they hired Dom Capers in 2009. When Jordan Love took over this year, it is Joe Barry's 3rd year as DC. Will that be yet another parallel? I believe so.

If you compare the two years as starter of Rodgers at Cal and Love's at Utah State, their stats were remarkably similar. I believe Rodgers has a slightly higher QB rating but Love had more TDs. And even then, Rodgers had consistent coaching and OL, skill players around him. Love's last year had complete turnover in HC, O coaches, OL and receivers.

It's a lot to ask of Love. Minnesota is a tough place to win. The Metrodome was a house of horrors for Brett Favre. He went 6-10 at Minnesota and Aaron Rodgers went 7-8.

I sure hope Love eats his wheaties on Sunday. He's gonna need them. If Carolina put 30 points up against "The Joe Barry Experience", Minnesota can probably hang 45 even if they pulled Fran Tarkenton out of the retirement village and put him under center. So, we need Love to throw for 5 TDs and someone to run for 2 more to have any chance in this game.

Mr Love has the tools to be a good one!! The arm, the mobility, he's ascending. The problem the Packers have Is a Head Coach with
a lack of common sense! MLF hiring an incompetent Defensive Coordinator and keeping him after the end last season makes no sense!
The offensive play calling against the Giants was mind boggling too! How many Jet Sweeps can you run In one game?
And after the win against the Panthers MLF tries to help Joe Barry's case by blaming the Packers offense for the defense's woes?
I say take a shot and go get a new HC with a strong defensive background and bring an offensive coordinator who can work with Jordan Love.
My gut feeling Is Packers QB Coach Tom Clements Is the reason Jordan Love is developing rather nicely not MLF!

Love to me has surpassed my expectation for this first year as a starter. The record I don't worry about because this is a team game. The defense has blown 5 4th quarter leads. So we can't place the wins/losses squarely on the QB.

What has impressed me with Love is how he has put the offense on his back several occasions already and has done well. While he hasn't been perfect, you really have to factor in who he has around him. He has guys around him that are very inexperienced, and he has had to go into the majority of these games without his best LT, without his number 1 WR, without his number 1 RB, and without his number 1 TE. This past game for example on of his top targets was a PS guy and he was missing 3 of his top 4 WR's.

To me those are the impressive things. He is still a young guy who has some lapses with footwork and misses some throws because of it. Those things you learn as a player. Going into next offseason he will have a full season under his belt. He will know what he needs to work on to improve, and some things he may need to change.

But before the offseason we have 2 games left and depending on what happens maybe more. Regardless this first game against the Vikings will not be easy. Vikings defense is a good one. It will be loud there and will challenge Love and the offense. For Love to build more confidence he needs to be on the top of his game. He can't control who is playing with him. It looks like we maybe short at WR again. But he needs to be able to hit the guys that are on the field.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Love does Sunday night!

Why the hell worry about a down vote. There’s been one person here who has done that for years if he’s not happy with you. There are undoubtedly others at times. If any of us put a thought out there then down votes will come. So what?

Hall is mobile. We need to maintain contain. We need to wrap up when we get penetration too. We can’t all out rush the DL, miss him and leave acres of space behind it as we did with DiVito. We need to account for his feet.

He exceeded mine simply because I didn't have any expectations lol. I thought there was a chance he could be good. I thought there was a chance he could be bad. I really didn't know what to expect. Outside of the Philly game last year we hadn't seen much from him.

But also, I didn't know what to expect from the young WR's and TE's around him. They have the youngest group in the league. So I wasn't sure how long it would take for this offense to click. The part that has impressed me though is that Love has been able to start rolling despite all the injuries they have had at those positions.

IMO Gutey does. The rookie class has been very good. The 2nd year guys have been really good. Love looks like the future.
I know people will hate the shit out of this too. But the work LaFleur has done with the offense, that has been very impressive as well. They have really been clicking the 2nd half of the season and that is despite the injuries they have had.

Gutey contributed to losing the locker room in the way he handled Rasul Douglas. It told everybody that no matter how well they play, they're worthless to this organization. "An offer too good to pass up? The third round pick he got in exchange for Rasul + a fifth round pick will likely NEVER contribute what Rasul does, can't possibly help this year, and is close to a certainty not to in his rookie season. If Gutey was going to do that at least don't say dumbass things like that.

His drafting strategy is working, but this drastic screw-up removes him from any possibility of even being considered good, much less award winning. Next draft he has to shift strategy to filling a few holes with top talent. If he can do that he might emerge as at least competent if he can keep from making such horrible mistakes, but he'll need cooperation from coaches to use player's strengths. For example #7 is good when he's aggressive; dropping back into coverage, not so much. Misusing Quay doesn't mean Gutey made a bad pick, even though sometimes it looks like it.

Are you so sure (or have some insider informations?) that it was not on Rasoul Douglas, who might ask trade because Joe Barry is ruining everybodies reputation (and possible level of salaries) on defense?

Public announcements are just nicely packed reasons for any move - like Jaire's suspension announcement.

There is almost always lot of behind some "innocent" announcement.

When it comes to getting a contract extension, Jordan Love is playing with house money at this point. The only question is how much money and how many years he will get with his contract extension in May. As others have noted, this one game is not going to make or break him. It is a good sign that he had the KC game circled on his calendar, and he played great. He should have this one circled too.

Until about the middle of this season, I didn't think Love had as much raw talent as Rodgers, but now I think that maybe he does--or at least he is in the same ballpark as Rodgers. Time will tell, but he's definitely earned an extension, and the money should be good too. You want to pay players who are young and ascending.

I wouldn't compare JL10 to AR12. Aaron is a unique talent, with the league records to prove it. He was opposite from Favre re: interceptions. JL can be opposite from AR in terms of throwing to rookies and otherwise being a team player.

He can improve the most by correcting the bad footwork he picked up this season playing behind a leaky O line, and making the easy layups. #33 probably has a bad catch % this season, but how much of that is due to JL missing on short tosses?

JL will always be very different from AR. If he can be compared to Bart Starr at the end of his career, that'd be good!

I can easily argue with you that Jordan Love also posses unique talent, different from FPQB. So, it is not a question of "type" of talent, but it is the question of what you will do with that talent.

I see Jordan as much, much more team player and much better leader that FPQB ever was, at least during his career at Packers.

Was FPQB generational talent? Sure. Does Jordan Love posses that level of talent we will see confirmation or opposite after 3 years of playing. At this moment it looks like Jordan posses that generational talent.

"When Jordan Love signed a one year contract extension last May he was essentially agreeing to a two year audition to become the long term quarterback of the Bay Packers."

Right from the get-go, you've got it wrong. When Jordan signed the one year contract extension last may, he essentially agreed to a *one* year audition to become the long term quarterback of the Green Bay Packers.

Had Love NOT renegotiated, the Packers would have been stuck in the position of either risking exposing Love to the free agent market after the 2023 season, or they would have had to pay for Love's 5th year option which would have cost $20.27 Million in 2024- fully guaranteed- without ever having seen him play any significant amount of time in live, regular season games.

Love's money is relatively unchanged- he's actually due to make a bit more than he would have if the Packers exercised the 5th year option- but had/if Love gets injured, or the Packers want to part ways, they could cut ties and Love could get nothing in 2024. Love basically 'took one for the team' and gambled on his talent (and health) to give the Packers an opportunity to evaluate his play before rewarding him with a long term contract. Voluntarily giving up guaranteed money in a violent contact sport is almost unheard of.

Make no mistake about it, Love may have signed a contract to make him a Packer through 2024, but the unwritten understanding is that the Packers were getting 2023 to evaluate Love before either deciding to pass on his services or draft a long term contract extension to make him the Packers starting QB for the foreseeable future. If the Packers don't have Love extended by start of 2024 season (or at least are in the process of doing so), it's as good as saying the Packers are moving on.

Cant happen till May though, due to the rules precluding more than one contract revision within a year. So we will have to wait for an answer if they are intending to keep him. I’m pretty certain that that is now a foregone conclusion.

If they don't start negotiations with Love until mid-season, it's a sign of bad faith and basically toying with Love's career after he did the organization a massive 'solid' by agreeing to the extension and giving up his guaranteed 5th year option money to allow the Packers to evaluate his play.

You want to piss off a player? Ask him to restructure and give up a lot of guaranteed money, and then when it's clear he's performed and worthy of an extension, let him hang in the wind for half a season where he could suffer a serious injury and be cut without any guarantees.. That does not build good will between a player and a team.

My hope for Love at the beginning of the season is that he would compare favorably with Jeff Garcia, the SFQB who followed Montana and Young. This was the track record (per wikipedia) for Garcia in his first full year as a starter, after CFL experience and a number of starts the season before:

(2000) The following season, with Young retired, and despite the 49ers drafting two quarterbacks (Giovanni Carmazzi in the third round and Tim Rattay in the seventh), Garcia kept the starting quarterback position and made his first Pro Bowl appearance. He set a new 49ers' team record with 4,278 passing yards in the 2000 season, although the team finished with a 6–10 record. Garcia finished the 2000 season, his first as a full-time starter with 31 TD passes to only 10 INTs. Garcia began the season on a tear, after 7 games, he had thrown for 19 TD passes, including 3 games of 4 TD passes.

Love has comparable stats to both Rodgers and Garcia in his firs year as a starter. Rodgers made a huge jump in his second starting season. Garcia go the 49ers to the playoffs. As I recall, Thompson extended Rodgers after his first year as a starter with a decent pay bump, but not one that would ruin the Packers if Rodgers flamed out in short order. Let's hope Gute follows that precedent.

I think those two questions are the most important to be answered.

Love has progressed for sure. He still have things to learn. And I think the ideas presented here are accurate. Love may be able to demonstrate what this writer is looking for in this game. But who knows if it will be a win. The defense is so unknown that even a great game from Love may not be able to overcome it. Rather, I am just looking for progress with Love.

BArry has demonstrated very well that his is not a capable DC. And it is too late in the season to do much of anything else. I don't believe he has the support of the players. And his system is dead for he has never been successful as a DC

I'm sitting here trying to evaluate Jordan Love and come up with the things about him that really concern me. However, as a first year starter and looking how this season has progressed, I am having a hard time developing a list of negative items and that is a good thing. This is what I think at this point in time. I think our young signal caller: has a very good NFL arm; seems to have a pocket presence and awareness which has helped him avoid a number of sacks; is quick enough on his feet to get outside and pick up yards when receivers are covered and smart enough to throw the ball away when the situation calls for it; he has improved his play as the season has moved along; and in my opinion, I do believe he is just a genuine likeable fellow who seems to have won over the confidence of his teammates and is coachable. I really like the guy also and hope like the devil that he turns out to be something very special.

The only downsides I see at this point:

Has shown a tendency in a number of games to come out of the gates cold and not get into sync until the second half

Along the same lines, has shown a tendency early in games to make poor throws where the ball tends to sail on him- that is, hard, high throws. Those high throws can be dangerous as if they get away from the WR they can turn into potential pick opportunities for the defense.

As many have noted, a lot of this seems to come back to footwork, thanks to the detailed analysis of JT O'Sullivan on his QB School Youtube Channel. That's good news, it's something that can be corrected. Better news, Love almost always seems to get it together by the second half, and has really put together a bunch of solid, sometimes spectacular, performances. I also agree with everything else you've said about Love. He certainly looks like a sound candidate to build around. He looks like a franchise QB to me.

No; decidedly not MLFs doing.

It's not poor plays early in the game, it's poor throws early in the game.
I'm talking exclusively about Jordan Love's performance, not the offense, not the defense.

Love specifically has games where he's just 'off' to start the game and it seems like it sometimes takes a quarter or half to settle in and start making the correct reads and accurate throws.

Just a note for the down-voters-

You'll be hard pressed to find a Packers fan who is as pro-Love as this guy right here. Early adopter and I've been high on Love since his 2nd training camp.

With that being said, I'm an honest evaluator and he does come out of the gates slow in about 25% of the games this year, and when he does, he's throwing poorly placed balls on short to intermediate throws, and a number of them I would classify as 'dangerous' high passes forcing the target to leap just to get a hand on the ball.

As stated previously, this is all correctable and Love almost always has a strong 2nd half regardless of his starts. He's performed like a top 10 QB the second half of the season, but there is lots of room for growth and improvement, which is a good thing.

Brett Favre tended to start most games the same way and was quoted as saying something like, "I need to get that first hit (by a defensive player) to settle in." Brett was so excitable that often his early throws were also high and hard. I think that Jordan's calm demeaner may fool us into thinking he's not as pumped up as we realize, lol. Like Brett (I'm by no means comparing their QB merits at this time) when QB1 STARTS the game with precise throws it can be a really fun game to watch! I always felt that any QB should be given shorter more "sure" completion possibilities type throws to start the game just to get their rhythm going. I remember during Rodgers' "Run the table" games that almost every one of them began with short quick throws. Just a theory from one of the least knowledgeable football fans on this site. :)

People who say they want MLF fired are essentially saying that they want Jordan Love and this incredibly young offense to throw away most of what they have built so far this year and start over with a brand new offensive system next year. There is no way in hell the Packers are going to do that. And they SHOULDN’T do that.

MLF is fine, at least for the time being. Get rid of Barry.

He’s done very well. Remember he has the constant pressure of knowing his defense will leave him no margin for error, and his coach calls some really weird plays. I like the fact that he battles back from mistakes or slow starts. It would be great if he got a chance to gain playoff experience this year.
The packers have a decent roster and appear to have a good young quarterback. I would think there are some very good HCs out there that would love to lead this group.

It is very exciting to me how the offense has improved over the course of the year and especially JL! He has exceeded almost everyone's expectations and will now torment the Vikings, Lions and Bears for the next 10-15 years! He should get paid at a reasonable rate akin to Derek Carr and Daniel Jones- get as many years on it as you can. It's absurd what the QB pay has risen to and it will be organizational suicide to go that path. Start drafting QB's every year if need be (Ron Wolfe) and let's break the cycle. This whole year has been exciting so far and we are still in the hunt for the playoffs! The only negative is the howling, self righteous, mean crowd who have taken the Joe Barry hate to extremes that should embarrass themselves. As pointed out the defense has been an institutional problem to varying degrees for years. Firing JB in season won't change anything except satisfy the mob. GPG!

If JL10 can avoid injury and just be himself these last two games I think anything else that might happen doesn't affect his contract situation.

As for his throwing ability developing further, playing behind a leaky O line he's learned bad habits. If he can fix that in the off-season and have all his cleats on the ground when he throws his consistency will be fine. He's talented enough to make off-schedule throws with erratic mechanics and he could learn to rely on that, messing up his career. Having Tom Clements around is supposed to avoid pitfalls like that.

Playoffs? How about just playing well? Of course playoff experience of even just one game would help, but so would playing well. Returning to the form they had in KC should be possible ...

GPG!

Concerned about JL's ball placement. He hits WR's but not without them twisting, stretching overhead, behind them, at the ankles. Totally exposing them. Needs accuracy. Numbers & bread-basket.

Here's the context to Love's performance (as one of the best new starting QBs in the NFL) while the narrative about his supposed "accuracy issues" persist:

1. He has played the entire season with an OL in disarray and under pressure often.

2. The lack of a potent run game has forced him to make low percentage plays due to down and distance challenges.

3. His receiving corps is the youngest in the NFL and one of the most oft injured groups in league. Route running woes is culpable to accuracy too.

4. Love has had play with his defense not just adding in game pressures...but heaping it on, too often late in games after his O gave the team a lead. So of course his play calls would be to "go for it" and try to win the game.

"Concerned about JL's ball placement. He hits WR's but not without them twisting, stretching overhead, behind them, at the ankles. Totally exposing them."

Did you take in consideration that Jordan Love placing the ball at the windows that are available only to his receivers, so if they do not catch the ball, there is no interception.

Those young receivers (WR, TE, RB) also need to recognize those windows and to adjust their position and body to that windows, so they will not be reaching for the ball with "twisting, stretching overhead, behind them, at the ankles."

I have an issue with the whole second paragraph. I hate to be so blunt but it is hyperbolic and stupid. How many times has Love and the offense come from behind in the 4th quarter this year? Love has already shown he is a good QB/above average QB, can perform in clutch situations, and that the packers can win a lot of games with him if they field competent defense.

The main question for Love, which cannot be answered till next year, can he improve or maintain his progress or was this year an anomaly.

Then at the end of the second paragraph, it's mentioned that Love needs to carry this team. I kind of bristle at the thought of a "QB carrying a team". Why? Because it's a team sport and effort. QB needs blockers at a minimum, then RBs to run or WRs to catch the ball. Only against JB defenses does a WR run to a spot with no one around for an easy pitch and catch. Even when a QB is throwing the ball into breadbox sized windows like AR did, it still requires a WR with the concentration to catch those types of balls. I just find the whole thing idiotic.

The converse is true. A QB can singlehandedly lose a game with poor decision and ball handling.

Another good read, Ken.

Since Fritz Schumer's D led the Packers to 2 SB appearances, "Green Bay has been through multiple coordinators including Dom Capers, Mike Pettine and the current Joe Barry."

And only one more SB in 2010.

31 years of HOF QBs and another budding star in Love with only 3 Super Bowl appearance and 2 Lombardi's is way below expectations.

Amazing, really! Why do the Packers invest so heavily in defensive talent only to passively tolerate DCs who lead their men into the basement? 3 DECADES of DC futility.
