The National Football League is trying to create more interest in the draft by going to a different format.What will that mean for the Green Bay Packers? Ted Thompson has some interesting things to say.

Good stuff on the new draft format from Tom Silverstein, including some interesting quotes from Thompson:
It certainly changes your routine and I'm a person of routine. It's been changed a little bit the last couple of years, so we'll change with it and go about our business. The first pick in each of the days are always valuable a little bit more because after the dust rises, there's normally a player where you say, 'Why is he still up there?' It becomes something of value.

I'm not trying to dump on Mike McCarthy, but I love that picture from the draft room with John Dorsey and Ted Thompson, ties off, glasses on, doing all the analysis while McCarthy is sitting with his tie on, looking up at the TV. McCarthy has a lot more days in the spotlight, but he takes a back seat to those two on draft day.

I'm so glad that the head coach doesn't take a crucial part in the draft process... Imagine if we were to take mainly players for MM's system. When he's fired, we're left with a mess!
I advocate for picking players for the system, but it must be only one criteria of choise, along with talent, medical issues, character issues...

Rich - He's referencing the duration of the draft now being 3 days in length as oppposed to 2. Now, every team can take one massive 12 hour 'time-out' after day 1 and day 2. The franchise braintrust will reconveine and restack their draft boards, re-ranking every player and their respective values. Let me give you day 2, first pick of last year (beginning of round 3) as a microcosim:
Day 1 was in the books and all teams had 12 hours to assess value of remaining prospects. The Jets decided Shonn Green presented tremendous value (they had him as the #1 back on their draft board) and offered up everything they had remaining to draft Shonn Green out of IA. Worked out quite well to this point. I could write an entire story about this. There will be potential for more wheeling-n-dealing then we've ever seen following the break between days.
There are supposedly a lot of teams that draft historically well complaining that historically bad drafting teams can now re-organize and, hence, draft better. I'm of the opposite mind. I can see the 'Raiders'and 'Cowboys' of the world overvaluing players and willing to give up gobs of picks to trade up into round 2, 3 and even 4 to overdraft a prospect. Look for the historically business savvy/prospect savvy teams (Patriots) to take advantage of overly aggressive teams.
The end of round 1, all of round 2, end of round 3 and beginning of day 3 will be fascinating in the war room.

i think this draft is going to be extremely entertaining. save for the fact that i'll be glued to the screen all thursday night only to see my beloved Packers trade out of the first round. it'll be hard having to wait another day to see who they pick.

i actually see trading down as being the right thing to do. if the Packers can find someone who wants to move up (hope some big name like mays or clausen drops) they gotta make the move and secure more picks in this deep draft.

Thanks for the kind words. Funny about trading back - can you imagine Lambeau on Thursday night, if the fans have been waiting for hours for the pick only to be told its been traded and to come back tomorrow? Funny, funny stuff.

I'm all for trading back IF, we still come away with a BEAST opposite Clay, a future LT, some Secondary depth and a 'return threat' whether he be a DB/WR/RB.
Oh and someone with a leg would be nice too.
That's not to much to ask for, is it?

What did I get out of this article? Bellicek with 3 first rounders. Everyone else speculating how the draft will change two times instead of one. Whoop! Only us geeks will be there on day three.

CSS, Thanks. I guess I can see how what Ted says means that.
I remember not too long ago when I started reading Packer blogs that the Packer nation seemed united in it's hatred of the idea of trading down and how that seemed to contribute to the hatred of TT as the handling of Brent.
Now there are people hoping TT trades down and no one responds negatively.

Speaking for myself, the great difference is depth in the draft.
While in other drafts the gap between the first rounders and the others were considered to be big, in this one there's equivalent talent up to the early/late 3rd.

Agree RS, this draft is sparce at the top and deep at the second tier. That's why it won't be that easy for TT to trade down this year. To do it, there will have to be a specific player someone else wants at 23 and the trade bait available for TT to bite.

I see the Bucs, the Pats and SD as potential trade parters, considering both have multiple 2nd rounders, as well as some other top 10 teams.
But you're right, I'd take for a player those teams really desire to fall to the 23rd for them to trade up.

RonLC and Fitzcore1252 u guys are too funny, i dont know why but i couldnt help but think the funny relation of having all RFAs signed by the date youre supposed to file your taxes...it may just be coincedential but i guess i saw the business side of the ball on that comment by mr. nagler from the NFL...
