Gut Reactions: Packers outlast Saints

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers victory over the Saints.

  • The haters are furious.
  • Didn't love a lot of what they drew up on offense early.
  • I can admit it. I was petrified about LaFleur goping for it on 4th and Goal.
  • Knew Payton would want to pound the football.
  • Big Dog wheel route. That's it. That's the gut reaction.
  • Coach the team you have. Hate that 4th & 1 call to Jones.
  • Where was Dillion?
  • Mike Pettine's inability to adjust is killing me.
  • Bit of a disappearing act from Z tonight. But he made the play of the game.
  • Saints did a very good job getting Rodgers to think they were in something and then switching to something else.
  • Nice bounce back game from Sternberger.
  • Nice game from Keke, who took advantage a couple times Brees wanted to go deep but it wasn't there.
  • Interesting to see Billy Turner over Wagner. Thought he held up just fine.
  • Second time in three weeks Lazard has stumbled catching a deep ball that should have been a TD
  • Love me some Big Bob Tonyan.
  • Look at that. A hands team that knows what to do.
  • My god I love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.
  • Carry The G.

1. Defense needs someone up front who can play besides KC. I don't care. A trade. Something. Oh, and our ILBs suck too.

2. The WRs and TEs stepped up against a good D. Without Adams. They could be more explosive, but I will admit it. I was wrong. Glad to eat the crow there.

3. Man, Z is a great player, and that fumble was awesome. But he's got to keep his gap integrity. NO was killing us going at him in the first half.

4. I don't know why Payton stopped running, but I appreciate it.

5. In non-Rona world, I think we lose this game. ARod's hard count was a huge weapon at times tonight.

6. 3-0 with two wins over dome teams on the road. Crazy. GPG

Pettine is gonna have to do something with the OLB being inside the TE and washing Z out of the play. Either move him outside the TE or better move a Safety or LB up next to him so the TE has something else to worry about instead of doubling Z. A safety blitz on that alignment would pay dividends more often than not. They were doing the same thing on multiple plays. Keke did some good things on the DL. Some of N.O's runs made us look like keystone cops trying to tackle Kamara. He's good but we made him look much better than he should have. The offense kept moving the chains and big plays to Lazard and TE group did really well. Big dog got another TD and his block on the goal line got jones over the goal line. Sternberger unthawed and made a couple nice catches.
Nothing is perfect but we have a win over a pretty good team and we are improving in areas we were idol in. Good to see so many different Defensive players playing. It gives us film of players that likely should be playing over some current starters. Keke 2 sacks / pass defensed is a good place to start. Rodgers played exceptionally well. ML called a pretty good game. Glad our TE group was ready to step up. I think Barnes needs to play more.

I guess it’s difficult to adjust when your lead ILB is playing his first game on D, but I thought they got more aggressive as the game went on, and seem to improve, particularly after the Kamara run of shame (for us).

I do agree that the play calling wasn’t good at times, particularly early and in the red zone. Eventually we got the TEs going.

Kudos to Lazard. They covered MVS heavily and he introduced himself. NO is good at covering receivers but horrid on TEs.

Seriously, the way some delusional Packer fans talk about Taysom Hill, he just might be the most overrated player in the history of humankind.

I'm sure that won't change now, despite the fact that he bulldozed his way to 7 yards on 2 rushes, pulled down a soul-destroying one yard reception, and also fumbled the game away.

Nice work, Teaspoon.

I sense a little frustration in the way some people talk about letting him go as a mistake. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

If I'm not, I'll say that I share it. Particularly the notion that he's a QB that it was a mistake to let go. As a versitile weapon that can be used in limited but creative ways, he does hold marginal value. As a QB, he's looking up at Trubisky, which is to say he's got to improve to be just plain bad.

Mind-bogglingly dumb call by Payton at that point. I have no idea why you go away from Murray and Kamara--who are doing whatever they want--to run a gimmick play, when all you need is to run clock and score to put your foot on the Packers' throats.

I was impressed by our TE play. Sternberger, Tonyan, and Lewis all had nice grabs. Rodgers drawing the penalties to keep drives alive gives me life. Our defense's tackling takes it away, although we had some crucial stops and Z's punch-out was fantastic. 3-0!!!

The Packers were playing a matchup zone for most of the game. King's job was to keep his man in front of him and limit the gains. He did that. Both him and Alexander were good in an assignment that pretty much kept them to being reactors.

Redmond had three big whiffs tackling and mis-played coverage in the short zone on the TD. The point is, King in the zone gets leveraged by the WR because of his legwork. He would be better in the guys face and using his length.

OldSchool I ain’t tryna hear this def needs work “opportunistic” defenses get exposed at some point. We watched a 12 year vet in Michael Jenkins play with a fire and passion neither of our safeties had with their missed tackles I’m sorry but your corners shouldn’t be more physical than your safeties. But man this offense is something ain’t it? This week we leaned on Rodgers when they committed to stopping the run so far it seems like defenses are going to have to pick their poison.

I think I'm a bit horse from screaming "Where's Dillion" when we were down on the goal line late in game. I get it, Jones has been awesome around the goal line but damn Matt, Dillion I think eliminates a lot of anxiousness down there around the goal line tonight.

LOVED how Rodgers pointed at Sternberger each time he caught the ball as if to say "Nice play young man". I think that's important for these youngsters, especially after a game like last week.

Mason Crosby is worth EVERY DIME he's being paid. BEAUTIFUL game by our kicker.

But why oh why with time running down are we pounding Jones up the middle. For one it doesn’t need pass pro and so put the ram in. Heck give it to Lovett, anyone. Don’t risk Jones for nothing.

Ironically the penalties, downs spent on futile rushes effectively iced the game. Eventually bring in blocking back and throw. At least they bought the threat on that.

Overall the goal line calls were not the best tonight. Nor were the opening scripted ones.

Great game. The Saints did not have much besides Kamara on offense. Not sure if Brees should be playing any longer. Need to find a way to stop the run on defense.

Another great game by the Packers OL. Great game for Tonyan. Sternberger had a couple of big plays. If Lazard had better speed he would have had 2 TDs tonight. Rodgers with another big game.

Defense made stops when they needed to in the 4th quarter. This is the type of game we would have lost in the MM/Capers days. A big win on the road that could have playoff seed implications later on. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

Taking a moment to appreciate that, flaws in this game aside, we stole a big road win against a good team despite some very big inactives on our side of the ball. Certainly helps that they had some too. Love the scrappy nature of this team.

As I said before our defense is scary - scary bad and then scary good. But whoever is teaching tackling needs to get a refresher - the Saints for sure were better on tackling than we were. Summers - brutal - Kevin King brutal. But we are 3-0 and our tightends showed up when they covered Lazard. About time for Tonyan and Sternberger to get through a game without a drop.

Had penciled this in as a loss but now we are 3-0. Just hope that we dont take Atlanta lightly. They seem to score a lot of points but only send out their scrubs for the second half - probably wont do that this time because if they lose their coach will be fired. Seems that coaches always get fired after losing to Green Bay.

Give Summers some credit. He needs improvement going to his right. But he made the tackles to the Left. So it's a angle thing. And Amos took a couple of bad angles too. Over all, he didn't embarrass himself except the arm miss on Kamara. But it was just as sad to see everybody miss him too. King, Alexander, etc.

Shouldn't be any complaints here.... We won a great game against a tough opponent on the road. Everybody gets a game ball here: offense, special teams, defense.

Yeah, the defense whiffed on some tackles, but they also made a lot of nice open field ones on all the short stuff....Special teams were flawless....Two great plays by M. Lewis, one for the TD reception, the other on his block along with Turner to get A. Jones into the end zone. AR was awesome again.

On top of it, we won without two very important players to start, losing Kirksey, and our three top draft picks not on the field.

And a special thank you to the local government for allowing only Saints' family members to attend and the NFL for keeping the decibel limit at a very reasonable level.

We held New Orleans to 30 on their home field. That doesn’t happen very often. The long run by Kamara featured a lot of bad tackling. Some people don’t think tackles are that important, but I think they are.

Rodgers and this offense are virtually unstoppable.

Not really on the lineman. They weren’t running any less effectively until later. Of course the turnover was a big boost, but the fire finally appeared after that embarrassing Kamara run.

Two of the Packers top four players - (Clark and D Adams) were out and yet GB still manages to get a win anyway.

Game MVPs: Rodgers, Lazard & Crosby.

D is a real concern but I'll take 3 & 0.

NO had two of its top four players out as well. Michael Thomas is elite. Marcus Davenport was excellent last year. They also had David Onyemata out who is a starting DI player for them. Onyemata is better than any DI lineman on the Packers save for Clark. Not in Clark's class, obviously.

Pretty even in those terms.

Alexander’s whiff on the Kamara TD was rough. That should never happen at this level. Primetime was probably shaking his head, and he was allergic to tackling.

TE’s had a great game. Go Pack

Packers can't get a yard with Jones , where is Dillon ? Kirksey is not injury prone? Is Preston Smith active? Can't keep winning games by scoring this many points , other than the miss tackle on Kamara Ty Summers looked pretty good don't know why it took so long.

I’m not blaming the entire run on Alexander. Redman at least wrapped up, granted it was not the best effort, Jaire did have to run him down, but he basically just passively tried to bump shoulders with Kamara- kinda like a celebration you’d do with a team mate. Gotta wrap up man

Alexander did have a bad miss on that one. His and Summers probably the worst, but he also made some good tackles.

In general though, the tackling did get better after that run. That needs to be a take away by players and coaches at all levels of the D. That type of commitment will make a huge difference to this D.

Let's just bask in the bottom line here! 3-0 in the NFC. 2-0 in the division. 2-0 in away games (not that they mean as much now). Most importantly, honestly looking good, both statistically and with the eyeball test. Nice crunch time win after an egregious defensive lapse. I always respected McCarthy but LaFleur's team has a much better vibe to it.

So has Taysom Hill just been a sleeper agent all this time waiting until the Packers needed him. LOL

The offense let down tonight. Without their best receiver they "Only" scored 37 and the second most in the NFL. Honestly, this team is really finding ways to score. No turnovers. The only criticism I guess would have to be getting stopped deep and needing 3 field goals, and this teams perpetual struggle with 3rd or 4th and 1 yard to go.

Am I just a nervous watcher or does it always seem like the Packers struggle with 1 yard to go situations?

The Saints don't give up sacks. Either of their tackles have not given up a sack in over a season. They had given up one sack as a team so far this season in the first two games. So you knew it would be a frustrating day for the Smiths. That said, Z. Smith still comes up with a "it is time" sort of play. I think he should get a sack to go with the fumble and recovery but I guess it was considered a run even if it was the QB he got on that play.

Are we reliving 2011? The offense feasts and the defense just tries to make one or two plays a game?

Well it seems like Summers is who I thought he was. Its like he’s always in position to make the plays but only actually makes the plays occasionally. He had too many missed tackles, just like in last year’s preseason. I was really hoping he’d improved on that. Here’s hoping that Christian Kirksey makes a quick return.

I thought he was very poor at first and much better later. It could just have taken time to get up to speed. Taking over calls and playing first snaps on D, that’s doesn’t seem surprising. Overall, I think he was better than expected.

I think NBC had a graphic showing that Rodgers had brought his ranking down on the time of getting the ball out from somewhere in the 30's last year to eighth this year through two games. And he rarely held the ball very long in this game either.

NBC also pointed out, GB has scored more points this year in their first three games than at any comparable time in their history.

I have for years wondered how much more success Rodgers and the Packers would have had if he had subscribed to this philosophy earlier in his career.

I love this team. Great win on the road (granted in this weird new world) and really a fun game to watch. Just glad no new injuries to speak of and another "W" for the Pack. This team, win or lose, is just fun to watch and it is refreshing to see how much fun the players are having! In this crazy time watching people actually enjoying doing their jobs is somehow something I need right now. GPG.
Edit: I forgot about Kirksey. Hopefully that isn't too serious.

Radom thoughts: Alvin Kamara on Turf. Unreal. "Run of Shame"(Quote Coldworld) Pettine's defense, love it or hate it going to drive us all crazy by the end of the season. By the second half got even lighter upfront with Smiths playing DE and Burks at OLB with 6 DB and Redman for Greene with 2 year Summers at ILB. Can see why the Packers like him. Rare combo of speed quickness and strength. Has football smarts, a bit raw. Packers controlled the tempo all game long, impressive job by MLF of offensive game calling and having Packers prepared in all three phases of the game. Aaron Rodgers is a very bad man. Is in total control of this scheme. Turner or Wagner? My guess is Turner's year in the system made the difference. Both Patrick and Turner had fine games, like they had being playing together for years. Impressive. Is Brees past his sell date.... Road victory in the NFL at a place we never win in. OH YEAH! I need a (root) beer...

That's the point. They were looking at it closely enough to answer the "what if" scenario. It seemed pretty clear that it was not going 10 yards. But they were there in case it took a crazy late bounce.

They absolutely did the right thing. Touching the ball makes it live and erases the 10 yard requirement. It they do that and fail to pluck it cleanly, or get hit and the ball knocked loose, the Saints have a chance. If they don't have to touch it, they should not.

I still think there was a Saint there with the "inside rebounding position" waiting to pounce if that thing goes one more yard forward. Teams will need a new plan for this slow kick that takes 10 seconds to get there.

Nola Fans here in Dallas whining about Marcedes push-off.
What the announcers didn't mention was Malcolm Jenkins should have been flagged for either/or defensive holding, illegal contact or DPI first. So the result there was right: TOUCHDOWN BIG DAWG!!

Now, attention turns to Atlanta, who has flatout given away games 2 weeks in a row (to Chicago yesterday amazingly, & via the onside kick fiasco last week vs Dallas). Head Coach Mike Smith is on the proverbial "hot seat".

Oh, speaking of Dallas: Mike McCarthy & the Cows lost again to drop to 1-2, with that lone win being the miracle last week vs Atlanta.
The good news for the Cows is that's good enough for 1st place in that pathetic NFC East division as neither the Eagles or Giants have yet to register a W.

"Nola Fans here in Dallas whining about Marcedes push-off."

What push off? Big Dog's arm never extended. He did use it to shield the defender away prior to taking a leap away from the DB toward the ball. But there was no pushing.

The NBC commentators were watching a different replay than the one they showed if they saw a push. The defender flopped, NBA-style. Or soccer-style. Take your pick on the flop comparison.

A lot of Packers screwed up tackling Kamara on the TD run, but none so blatantly bad as Summers tackling high bouncing off Kamaras shoulder pads along sidelines before Kamara had a full head of steam. Basic tackling skills should be engrained in Summers to go lower when tackling.
