4 Takeaways From Packers 2-27 Broncos: Because It Didn’t Deserve 5

Digging through the wreckage of a miserable Packers preseason game.

Missed opportunities

The Packers’ trip to Denver does not seem like it has been especially productive. Matt LaFleur’s team toiled in the joint practice on Friday and there were precious few positives to take from Sunday’s 27-2 loss to the Broncos.

Green Bay’s head coach had it right when he opened his post-game press conference by saying: “that was a long night”.

Of course, there is context to provide; this was a meaningless game which the Broncos played their starters for a good chunk of, while 31 Packers players sat out, but what will have disappointed LaFleur is that none of his second-or-third-stringers really stepped up to grab the opportunity in front of them.

The offense in particular was a disaster on Sunday night, being shut out by Denver, with the defense providing Green Bay’s only two points through a *checks notes*... Zach Morton (?) safety.

Sean Clifford’s poor first half opened the door for Michael Pratt to audition for the number two quarterback spot, but the rookie did not fare any better. The pair were a combined 16 of 26 passing for just 95 yards and an interception.

In fairness, they were not helped by an offensive line which was on its heels all night. The depth behind likely sixth-man Sean Rhyan, especially at tackle, is a real concern for the regular season.

Presented with the only opportunity of the night to put offensive points on the board via a field goal, Greg Joseph pulled a 47-yarder wide of the uprights.

The kicker ‘battle’ is going to end with the Packers being forced to pick the best from a bad bunch, and continue scouring the free agent market for answers.

Royce Newman

An emblem of Green Bay’s porous offensive line, Newman’s place on the roster is getting harder and harder to justify.

Despite having three years in the NFL and in this offensive system, he looked lost against the Broncos.

Newman was lightweight entering the league and nothing has changed. He struggles mightily against any form of power rush and does not have the power to generate any movement in the run game.

This was on display Sunday as he allowed pressures and contributed to a Packers short yardage failure in the fourth quarter.

The former fourth-round pick recently took a pay cut to improve his chances of making the 53, and Green Bay is short on experienced depth along the offensive line, but Newman is simply not good enough.

Linebacker position remains in flux

Rookie third-round pick Ty’Ron Hopper made his preseason debut on Sunday after missing out last week through injury and was active, leading the team with 11 tackles (six solo, five assisted).

His fellow rookie Edgerrin Cooper has still not returned to action after leaving practice on Wednesday with a groin injury, putting him behind the eight ball in terms of being able to crack the starting lineup when the regular season rolls around.

Ralen Goforth exited Sunday’s game and was diagnosed with a concussion after a collision with Jarrett Sitdham (which the delightful Broncos announcing crew took great pleasure in bragging about while a clearly groggy Goforth walked off the field).

At this point it feels a lock the starting three linebackers for Green Bay in base defense will be Quay Walker, Isaiah McDuffie and Eric Wilson, at least for the regular season opener.

Beyond that, it’s anyone's guess. The uncertainty at the position due to the injuries which have slowed Cooper and Hopper’s adaptation could be good news for Kristian Welch and his chances of making the roster.

Welch is hitting the cliche of “quietly” having a nice training camp, simply doing his job in practice and preseason action. He will contribute on special teams and has at least a shot at forcing his way onto the 53.

It mostly doesn’t matter

As frustrating as Sunday’s game was – especially for this writer who stayed up until 4am UK time watching it – do not mistake it for meaning anything with regard to the regular season games Green Bay will play starting in three weeks.

Almost every player who is expected to contribute to the 2024 Packers in any meaningful way did not even suit up for this game. The frustration of fans should come from having watched a truly pointless game of football more so than anything that happened during said game.

Let's be honest-Denver took it to the starters in practice last week as well.

This team didn’t look up for it at practice or in the game in Denver, with a handful of exceptions. How that could be is a mystery, but it was real and even LaFleur accepted that it was.

There is more wrong with our OL approach than individual players it seems. I do not think it’s just who is used, when and where, but how they are used. I think our blocking concepts need questioning. We may have kept one OC too many last offseason.

Newman and Telfort aren’t NFL players. Stenovich needs to let go. Telfort is starting to look like an echo of his refusal to see that Hanson wasn’t cutting it or that Newman wasn’t a better T than Tom, or Nijman. In the meantime Jones seems to be being cold shouldered as Nijman was. LaFleur may need to start helping his OC just as he had to his former DC.

To amplify my concerns, PFF had Caleb Jones as our highest rated T. Per them Caleb Jones didn’t allow a pressure over nine pass-blocking snaps at right tackle. Tenuta rated higher, but he only played G.

WTF is Stenovich doing? Even if it’s only later in the game that’s two weeks that Jones has showed far better than the others and yet he’s not seemingly in serious competition?

Interestingly, PFF had Glover rated pretty well (as our 5th best offensive player), charging him with only two pressures over 26 pass-blocking snaps and 48 total snaps at right tackle later in the game (but still coming in before Jones, who played a lot less snaps).

Tyler Davis has largely escaped criticism, but PFF is not alone in rating him our worst offensive performer, with consensus that in 10 snaps total over the early drives he missed on 5 run blocks.

Thats atrocious! Even more so for a player who is supposed to fill exactly that role! PFF gave him their worst grade for the game. Merited if that consensus is correct. I’d have to say that should prompt discussion of roster worthiness.

Stenavich may have been a Peter Principle hire...promoted to a job above his skillset.

The OL seemed far better prepared when he was solely focused on that room in '19, '20 and '21. But maybe it was the players: Bakht, Jenks, Linsley, Turner, & Bulaga was a pretty good group. And Stenavich did believe Neeeeewman! was a starting rookie NFL G in 2021 and was easily the weakest link.

Last season when Myers was struggling early and often, Stenovich claimed he was having the best season of his career. Really, Adam? That got my attention.

As I posted on another thread Ididn't watch the game. However if the depth on the Packers OL is as bad as it's being portrayed in these articles and comments then the Packers may want to make an easy move that would strengthen the OL depth almost immediately.

That move would be to bring back the as yet unsigned Bakthiari. The Packers have an $18 million dead money hit against the salary cap if Bak doesn't play for the Packers. Maybe they should consider utilizing that money and bring Bak back. Walker could then be the swing tackle and at least the depth at the tackle position would be improved. Bak knows the offense and if he can stay on the field even for part of the season the OL would be improved and it would buy time for the OL #2s to improve. If Bak goes down again with an injury we know that Walker is ready to step back into the LT position full time if necessary.

I'm not saying that the Packers should do it but they should at least consider it and see if Bak is willing sign for less than his $18 million dead money hit on the salary cap. With 3 weeks to go before week one he could get in enough work for the season opener. Bak would be better that Dillard or Telfort. Probably won't happen but it's worth a shot. Thanks, Since '61

Even if Bakh were to sign Bakh for a dollar, it would be 18 million and one. That dead cap hit has been taken irrevocably, at the moment of release. It can’t be reduced, deferred or offset. Any new money would be on top of that.

Problem is D Bakh probably can’t pass a physical. Otherwise I suspect he would be signed by someone.

As desperate as teams are for Offensive tackles, I don't believe Bakh has worked out for anybody. I'm guessing that's because he's still not ready to play.

Well penned, Sir. QB2, kicker, LB & OL depth... not a lot of time left to sort out before 06/09 (as that date in September would be expressed in UK and by many CDNs.)

Wanna proper O-line depth? Start with cutting Newman and elevate Jones in the roster.

I felt like Jonathan Ford played a nice game also. For a huge man with a low relative athletic score he was the first guy off the ball on every snap that he was involved in and he got good upfield push. He also almost made a sack. That’s pretty encouraging since he is the only nose tackle backing up TJ Slaton.

Nobody I know of has suggested Ford will make the roster, but could he somehow squeeze his way in there? Seems like the light has finally come on for him in season #3. His timing is not so good, with five DTs now ahead of him in the pecking order. Maybe they will put him on the practice squad and elevate him for games where they need some extra beef in the middle.

They could keep Ford and move Wooden or Brooks outside more. It’s really down to whether Hafley favors having a lighter DE or feels that an extra bug body behind Slaton is better. Mosby has flashed and plays STs, some think Cox has merit, though for me Mosby seems to have had a marginally better preseason. Ford does seem to fill a weak spot given that there’s not an obvious guy to back up Slaton if we plan to use that role significantly.

I would really worry if he were not active and we lost TJ Slaton. Our run defense would be in big trouble.

Did anyone else feel like big Caleb Jones had a decent game?

Yes, late on, but I thought so. PFF thought so too, they had him as our highest rated T. No pressures on 9 passing snaps. He only played 17 total.

Happy there is still some time left before anyone is eliminated from the playoff picture. Nothing wrong with needing to get better at this point and time. Not sure why we rested 31 players, but what ever the reason here is to seeing more success than failure between now and playoff games… A whole lot of ballgame left?

I take a slightly different approach to this game than everything I've read.

The Broncos played most of their starters for most of the game. Good! The Packers played almost exclusively 2nd and 3rd stringers. It's hard to evaluate talent of backups when they play against backups. We want to know how they'll fare against opponents when the real games start. We got a lot of answers.

Our O-line backups are won't hold in games that count.

It was a mistake to bring in Joseph, who's no better than Carlson. We still need a kicker, although that snap and hold weren't very good either.

We have exactly what we expected from Pratt and Clifford - 2 developmental backups whom are inconsistent and struggle with ball security. Clifford has struggled with INTs all camp long and made a terrible decision here. Pratt's fumble was also bad, and he puts too much on short throws. The best receivers in the NFL struggle with 10 yard bullets that are high.

Vanilla play calling like this won't win a lot of games, though starters should execute better and hopefully the vanilla stuff is only for preseason.

Our WRs on the bubble haven't stepped up enough to clearly fill that last couple spots. DuBose had a good game and followed it up with a stinker. Heath and Melton have struggled. Part of that is due to poor QB play, which is due to O-line allowing constant pressure.

Our backup defenders struggle to cover, tackle, and read screens. Part of that has to be coaching, when receivers run through zones and defenders don't pick them up - stand flat footed until the ball is thrown. Zone D has been a consistent problem for Packers, Hafley needs to improve that drastically.

Wilson and Sims belong on the final 53. We have talent at TE and RB. We have a solid punter.

Overall I think this game answered a lot of questions. It showed clear needs for improvement and a few players made good plays. Many of these answers aren't what we'd hoped for but better to find out in preseason. Go Pack go!

A lot of writers are stating that the preseason games are meaningless, that the team and the players don't care about what happens. It is true that a team's preseason won-loss record is not predictive of success during the season, but this stuff is vitally important to the players involved in games where 31 players sat it out.

Other than Rhyan and Monk, every guy who played offensive line against Denver was fighting for a raise that triples or quadruples their salary, which amounts to a $500,000 to a $650,000 raise, and a few are just trying to secure a PS spot that pays $225K. Ditto for the defensive line, other than Brooks and arguably Wooden. The same can be said for every other position group.

Make no mistake: every player out there against Denver was trying hard. What they did is the best they could do that night. That is a little sobering. I do think the playcalling definitely indicated that the coaches did not care even a little about the score. That is okay - the coaches just wanted to know if the players could execute this or that against opposing starters and later against other backups.

Reader View is the only way I can read this site on my phone. It lets you read without pop ups or adds (downsides are no videos or comments). It also has black print on white background which is easier for my eyes to read.
Click on the website bar, then click on the AA to the left of the web site address. When the menu appears choose 'Show Reader'.
After reading the article I do the same process to choose Hide Reader to see the comments.

The offensive line continues to follow some weird unknowable strategy that elevates lesser players on the depth chart and minimizes certain other players that universally appear to be better at football. This suggests some old school bias by the leader (Stenovich. Butkus?) that ranks their guys for non football criteria. It's troubling though as pointed out by other posters, consistent. It appears that we'll have to endure early season struggles until these coaches are forced to do the necessary adjustments.

Hey, chill everyone. I think it was all my fault. I turned on the game just before the snap of Cliffords INT. I quickly turned if off fearing that I jinxed the play....but just learning now that it was more substantial than just one play. Apologies.
