A New Era in the Packers Bears Rivalry Starts Sunday

“I still own you!” The words were picked up by a television camera after Aaron Rodgers ran for a touchdown against the Bears two years ago in yet another Green Bay win over their oldest rivals. Rodgers was spot on. He did own the Bears. In his 15 seasons as the Packers starting quarterback, Rodgers was 24-5 against Chicago, throwing 64 touchdown passes and just three interceptions.

The two teams have now met 204 times in the regular season with the Packers holding a 104-94-6 edge in the series that started in 1921. The teams split their two postseason meetings with the Packers winning the last meeting in the 2010 NFC Championship Game in Chicago.

There have been many eras in the more than 100-year rivalry between the Packers and the Bears. It started in the 1920s with team founders Curly Lambeau and George Halas going head-to-head as coaches and even as players.

The Bears dominated the series in the late 1940s and 50s as the Packers struggled through some tough times.

In 1959, Vince Lombardi joined the Packers and turned the tide. He beat the Bears 9-6 in his first game as Packers head coach and never looked back. During his nine seasons as the Packers leader, Lombardi’s teams went 13-5 against Chicago.

In 1962, the Packers won both meetings between the teams in dominant fashion. In Green Bay in Week 3, the Packers forced five turnovers to shutout the Bears. Fullback Jim Taylor ran for 126 yards and three touchdowns while cornerback Herb Adderley capped the scoring with a 50-yard pick six as the Packers romped 49-0.

In the rematch five weeks later at Wrigley Field, the Packers scored 31 unanswered points to break a 7-7 tie to win 38-7. The defense forced seven turnovers in that game with Hall of Famers Adderley, Willie Wood, and Ray Nitschke each intercepting a pass. Taylor ran 25 times for 124 yards and four touchdowns as the Packers outscored the Bears 87-7.

After Lombardi stepped down after the 1967 season, the Bears enjoyed more success. Walter Payton had some of his best performances against the Packers, gaining more than 100 yards against the Pack 13 times including a 205-yard performance on 23 carries in a 26-0 win for the Bears at Lambeau Field.

The low point of the rivalry came in the mid-80s when Forrest Gregg and Mike Ditka were coaching their respective teams. Both Gregg and Ditka were tough guys who were part of the rivalry in the 1960s as players.

The Bears dominated the rivalry during this time, but the games featured questionable play by both teams with penalties for late hits, cheap shots, and brawls.

The most infamous incident came in 1986 when Packers nose tackle Charles Martin body slammed Bears quarterback Jim McMahon well after the whistle during Chicago’s 12-10 win over the Packers at Soldier Field. Martin was ejected from the game and suspended. It was all part of an eight-game winning streak for the Bears between 1985 and 1988.

The Packers ended the Bears winning streak in 1989 in dramatic fashion in the Instant Replay Game. Packers quarterback Don Majkowski found Sterling Sharpe in the end zone on a fourth and long play in the final minute of the game. The referee originally ruled that Majkowski had crossed the line of scrimmage before releasing the pass, but instant replay proved he was behind the line and the penalty was overturned. The Packers won 14-13 and the crowd at Lambeau Field went wild as the Packers ended the Bears streak.

The Bears held a 79-57-6 advantage in the all-time series through 1991. The tide turned in 1992 when Brett Favre joined the Packers. In 32 games as the Packers starter, Favre led the Packers to a 22-10 record.

Favre threw 53 touchdowns in those 32 games. His best game was a five-touchdown pass performance in the Packers 35-28 win over the Bears at Lambeau Field in Week 11 of the 1995 season. Favre almost didn’t play because of a sprained left ankle but he gutted it out and threw for 336 yards. He threw two touchdowns to running back Edgar Bennett, two to wideout Robert Brooks and one to running back Dorsey Levens.

Rodgers took over as the starter in 2008 and was even more dominant than Favre had been. The Packers have now won the last eight games between the two teams including 13 of the last 14.

Will Jordan Love be able to continue the Packers dominance over the Bears? It will take years to determine that answer, but we will see the first chapter Sunday afternoon in Chicago. A Packers win will certainly plant some seeds of doubt in the minds of the Bears and their fans that things will change much now that the Packers have changed quarterbacks.

Sunday starts the latest chapter in the NFL’s oldest rivalry. What role Love and Justin Fields will ultimately play in it remains to be seen. But these two teams continue to battle twice a year and will remain fierce rivals no matter who is the quarterback for either team.

This 'rivalry' talk was a topic on 'The Game' the other day.

Lets be honest...this rivalry has been mostly non existent since the 80's.

But now, since Rodgers is gone, apparently it's a thing again.
The reality is, most, if not all of the Packers players, weren't even born while there was a rivalry.
I mean, even LaFleur was only 7 years old when the Charles Martin thing happened.

I don't know about a 'rivalry'. I think it's more accurate to say they've had rivalry, history.
*************
I remember, back in 2010 lore, the only thing you heard from Bear fans were that the Bears led the series wins against the Packers. We used to hear that ad nauseum.
Until they lost that too. Since then, crickets.

I don't expect that to change soon, i have faith the Packers will beat the 3-14 Bears team, and their 27th, and 28th rankings in defense, and offense tomorrow afternoon.

Regardless that the Bears have a franchise RB in Justin Fields.

I don't know about GG but my thoughts are to ignore the jerk. He just does this for attention so we should all just ignore him.

Probably shouldn't have glossed over the 1963 season or the 6TDs in half by Rodgers.

Judging Love by chapters to determine a answer.-
Is poppy cock.
Love must be judged on;
Accuracy,Vision, arm strength, pocket awareness,
intelligence, and leadership,
And if he can do all those things.
He will be judged on his Stats.
But it all starts with winning.
FACT: The more chances he gets.
The better he will be.

I agree on what you think Love should be judged on. Some go without saying, like winning, but you're absolutely right, it STARTS with that...And probably should end with that too...

Yea...i disagree Nick.....

You can't just judge a QB on wins and losses, you have to look at the big picture in totality.

It's true the QB has the most influence, but they don't block, tackle, intercept passes, drop the ball, catch the ball, field and fumble onside kicks, or give up easy TD passes in big games.

There are a lot of influences concerning wins and losses, like when Nick Perry got his big contract and decided to 'half ass' it until he was released in his late 20's.

Then he retired, or....32 teams didn't want him.

I know, i know....sorry 😮

NFL football has been, and always will be a team game when it comes to winning.

"... like when Nick Perry got his big contract and decided to 'half ass' it until he was released in his late 20's."

That's lazy and doesn't reflect the truth. Nick Perry failed to live up to his contract, but it wasn't due to lack of work ethic. It was due to injuries.

I watched the games, i watch every game, i record every game.
Having injuries is correct, but it's not the point.
He got his 11 sacks, then he got paid, then he half assed it.
See Randall Cobb after 2014, his production decreased annually.
There is a reason why Perry retired in his 20's.
Nobody, including the Packers, wanted him.
Somewhat like Kevin King, who was a liability, not an asset, but Gute didn't see it, until it was too late.
But with King it was more a lack of talent.
See the NFCCG against the Bucs.
Now he's sitting at home in his 20's, because no team wants him.

I'll go thumbs up with Stockholder... generally speaking.

Jordan Love aside....
A lot of players do improve with more opportunities, but that isn't an absolute fact with all.
Kevin King had a lot of chances, Ja'Marcus Russell had a lot of chances, among countless others.

Pumped up that the NFL season is now here.
Also watching the Badger grow each week (hopefully) after all the off season hype.

"A New Era in the Packers Bears Rivalry Starts Sunday"

So since Brett Favre was the starter and then through AR12's dominance the Packers have been 46-15.
LOL...Hell, that's no rivalry, that's just a plain ole fashioned ass whooping on a consistent basis.
The Bears will ALWAYS suck!

Oh shit, am I starting to write my comments like Stockholder?

A great read, Gil.

Those two 1962 games vs the Bears are almost beyond belief!

The Packers Defense forced 12 turnovers! Jim Taylor ran for 250 years and 7 touchdowns. The Pack outscored the Bears 87-7. Plus, the '62 Bears were not a bad team...a 9-5 record. Two losses compliments of Vince's Men. Bears only lost to 3 other teams that season...49ers, Lions and Giants...by a total of 17 points!

The 1962 13-1 Packers were the best ever in my opinion. Veteran team with a Coach who had achieved excellence as a coach. Beat the 12-2 Giants at Yankee Stadium. That must have been quite the day for Lombardi...ex Giants Offensive Coordinator and Brooklyn born.

I was at the Instant Replay game (15 yard line), south end zone where it happened. I was sitting next to a Bear fan. We both had fun on that play. He was a good sport.

Does the Bears Organization still label that game illegitimate?

I really haven't felt an intensity in the Bears/Packers games in a long time. The Packers have truly dominated the annual series since Favre took over as the Packers starting QB. I feel a much more intent dislike for the Vikings and they are the team that I hate for the Packers to lose to the most. The Lions are somewhere in between but they have also been irrelevant for a long time. Maybe that is beginning to change now.

This Packers team should go 4-2 in their division this season. Sweep the Bears and split with the Vikings and Lions. It all begins tomorrow and we'll see how it goes.

I think that rivalries have been diminished by the fact that in the free agent era the players realize that they could be playing with the alleged rival by the next season. Numerous Packer players have been signed by their divisional foes during the free agent era. I think when you have former team mates and friends on the opposing team it mitigates the intensity or the hatred that you feel towards the opponent. The players are all in it together regardless of which team they play for.

Back in the day the Packers and Bears players did not like each other and I don't think they would ever want to go over to the "enemy". For the most part players were essentially owned by the team which drafted them. Unless they were traded they were either Packers or Bears for their entire careers. Free agency has changed all of that and players will sign with the highest bidder when they reach free agent status in their career. Even if that means signing with a formerly hated rival. Thanks, Since '61

I always enjoy reading '61's comments, as everyone should .

I'd like to add that the rivalry was never more intense than in the 80's.
Maybe it was sometime in the 60's but i was too busy being conceived and born, and getting my diapers changed to concentrate on football.

One of the reasons it was intense in the 80's was because of the Packers Board of Directors who hired the head coach's back then.
They had this obsession with hiring people who had history with the Packers.
Sadly, that fact is undisputable.

So when Forest Gregg coached against Ditka, it was inevitable that it got nasty, and that's putting it nicely.
Which i didn't mind, but i would have rather gotten into the SuperBowl back then, given a choice.

For the younger generation....
The Packers BOD's stopped hiring the coaches when Ron Wolf refused to take the GM job unless he had full authority over football operations.
Which they gave him and the results of the GM making football decisions, speaks for itself.

Until of course in 2018, when Mark Murphy changed the by laws of the Packers and stripped the GM of total authority over football operations.

Murphy put himself in full authority over football operations in spite of the fact...he had no previous experience.

Maybe that partially explains the f story we endured through the whole Love/Rodgers fiasco.

Agree or disagree with me.... i don't give a ... ,never have

I believe we had more success in Green Bay when the GM had full authority (like he should). By all accounts, even Lombardi had full authority.
The GM should be able to operate the team as he wishes THAT IS HIS JOB, he shouldn't have to do it with training wheels and having to ask for 'permission' to make a move.
The NFL GM job is NOT an internship.

Having full authority seemed to work out just fine for Wolf and Thompson.
But you draw your own conclusions.

I didn't realize MM made that change so recently. I'd much rather see Gutey in charge; there's no other way to hold anyone accountable. I'm not ready to say "in Gutey I trust," but chopping a man off at the knees is not the way to get their best. I do expect he would seek input from others in the organization, but somebody has to be able to make a decision.

Hopefully the organization reverts back to sanity soon.

Since '75 - I appreciate your generous comment. The rivalry was definitely more intense back in the 80s, at least for me it was. Ditka vs. Gregg was part if it as they were rival players back in the 60s when the Packers dominated everyone including the Bears. Ditka made a point of trying to get even during the 80s as the Bears HC.

But as I posted that was all before the NFL free agency era. I can't say for certain but I don't think that there are any hard feelings for JC Tretter or ESB now that they are with the Bears. Also I don't think the Bears had any ill will towards Amos while he was in Green Bay. Back in the 60s, 70s and 80s it would have unthinkable for Packers and Bears to switch teams so easily.

Now Packers/Bears is pretty much just another game on the schedule. Thanks, Since '61

The heydays of this rivalry were in the 1930's and early 1940's. Otherwise it's been streaky over the course of time. Of particular interest was the 1932 season, where the first game ended in a scoreless tie, the second was won 2-0 by the Packers on a blocked punt, and the third won by the Bears 9-0. From the very limited information I was able to gather about these contests, it seems they more resembled outdoor brawls than football games.

""""I still own you"......I hated that moment because it should have been "We still own you", but it wasn't. I have come to see that as an iconic moment that symbolizes the way give Rodgers way too much credit for what the team has done for him. We owned the Bears before him, we owned the Bears when he was out injured, and we'll own the Bears after him. I hated that he made this about him,and not the team.

It's obvious the big weapon is Fields running. Edges have to contain, not just pressure, and we should play zone coverage so that our DBs don't have to turn their backs on Fields. And a spy, of course, like Walker maybe. Contain and pressure with 4, cover with 6, keep one guy as a spy.

The Bears were there from the start of the league, but the Vikings were born in 1061. I always disliked the Bears, but in more recent years, I've grown to hate the Vikings. It's a very good year when we beat them both.

hating the bears is tradition. hating the vikings is due to their dumbass fans, and now possibly that domed stadium. bears fans are generational, vikings fans have no history to fall back on.

they're just dumbasses with really ugly uniforms.
