Around the NFC North: 2024 week 17

Ugh

Well, at least the Bears still suck. Let's get it over with.

Vikings

The Vikings held off the Packers in a 27-25 victory that wasn't that close.

Game Notes

  • We all saw the game, so we know how dominant Sam Darnold was. He didn't get pressured and completed whatever he wanted in the middle of the field. I don't know the solution to the middle-of-the-field thing because, according to Twitter at least, Xavier McKinney and Edgerrin Cooper are the two best players on the defense. They're in the middle of the field most of the time! Are we really only giving up big plays when it's Javon Bullard or Isaiah McDuffie in the middle? The defense has definitely improved. There's no question. We just shut out a team! But the defense isn't perfect when it's down five guys and the other team has like four pro bowlers catching passes or running the ball.
  • The whole thing begs the question on the Vikings side: if good quarterbacks can still carve up this defense a little does that mean Darnold is a good QB? Should they franchise him or give him a big extension? I'm not close to smart enough to know the answer but I will say that in this tree we've seen this issue a hundred times with Jimmy G, Jared Goff, Brock Purdy, Kirk Cousins, Matt Ryan, hell even Matt Schaub and Brian Hoyer. I don' know how many of those guys were worth $60mm a year or whatever the next step up is but I know that none of them won a super bowl. The scheme and surrounding talent can prop up a guy but once you pay the guy and the talent goes down you're stuck in purgatory.
  • On the Vikings' defensive side of the ball, they confounded the Packers by using a lot more man coverage than they have been this year and blitzing more than 70% of the time. It's like Flores went back to last year's scheme and it worked. Whether because they weren't good enough or because the Vikings were being grabby, the Packers' receivers could not get separation. There are only so many drives where you can watch a deep incompletion on first down, a dumb run on second down and then either another incompletion on third down or a three-yard completion before you go on some sort of seven-state spree.
  • Last week, I talked about how confident I was in the Packers against the other NFC teams and this game made that look pretty stupid. A lot of these division games have gotten away from the Packers quickly. In this one, they had momentum going on offense early and spoiled it with a fumble, a wasted drive and then a lack of aggression on fourth down. Meanwhile, the Vikings were moving the ball at will thanks to wide open spaces down the spine of the Packers d. Can we put it together on offense? Can we figure out how to cover the damn middle of the field for the first time in decades? Sure. Will it happen this year? I don't know anymore.

Bears

The Bears lost a laugher to the Seahawks, 6-3, on Thursday night. Wouldn't it be funny if the league made the Bears play all their games on Thursday night football? Can we get a petition going for that or something?

Game Notes

  • We did Christmas with my in-laws this past weekend in Illinois and easily the best part was when I got to tell all my wife's uncles that the Bears had lost 6-3 already that week. Hilarious. Can you even imagine that score in an NFL game? Caleb Williams had 122 yards on 28 attempts. D'Andre Slow only had 55 yards.
  • Rome Odunze was the third receiver and ninth player taken in the draft. He's been the 66th-best WR statistically this year. Caleb Williams was supposed to be the second coming and Odunze's addition was supposed to give the Bears the best wide receiver corps in the league. That sure as hell hasn't worked out. Maybe forcing a young core to have three different offensive coordinators in one season isn't a great idea.
  • The defense played well, I guess. It's been a while. Geno Smith was held without a touchdown and there for just seven yards per attempt though the Seahawks did have 122 rush yards on 4.9 yards per carry. Montez Sweat, who has been just as disappointing as Rahsan Gary this season, had a sack.

Lions

The Lions held off the 49ers in a 40-34 victory.

Game Notes

  • The Lions took care of business in a game that barely mattered against the 49ers. Likely mad about Sam Darnold getting all the shine on Sunday, Jared Goff completed 26/34 passes for 303 yards and three TDs. Say what you want about the Lions defense, their offense still feels like the clear best in the league. Next week against Minnesota will be a good match-up.
  • Jahmyr Gibbs led the way among the weapons with 18 carries for 117 yards and 4 catches for 46. Even more so than Aaron Jones on the Vikings, people have wondered if Gibbs has the size to take a full load - in a surprising move, the Lions had him do that in this game that didn't matter. You'd think he'll get even more touches in the next three or four games as the stakes rise.
  •  The Lions defense was just bad in the first half. 49ers twitter members were talking about Brock Purdy having the best game in NFL history (lol). Purdy still accumulated 377 yards, but the Lions picked him twice (both Kerby Joseph, unfortunately) and sacked him a few times in the second half when they finally took over to get the win.

"But the defense isn't perfect when it's down five guys..."

Darnold caught lighting in a bottle this season. He also has really good receivers and an outstanding OL. Makes you think Cousins really wasn't the key to their Offense, given his wings being clipped with the Falcons this season. And they gave him $180 million!

Being down Alexander, Williams, Walker, then Wyatt and Anderson with Bullard not 100% explains a lot of Darnold's success. He is playing outstanding QB this year, no doubt. But those 5 men would have made a difference. A winning difference? No way to know. But those 6 players are all very effective and important pass defenders.

The Vikings OL is far from outstanding. Going into Sundays game Love had been sacked 16 times and Darnold 46. Some of that is on Darnold for holding the ball too long at times but it's not a good pass blocking OL, especially with Darrisaw out. If they play the Eagles in the playoffs the Eagles will feast on that OL.

The fact is we thought going into the season the Packers had good depth and talent on the DL and it turned out not to be the case. Hafley is getting pressure by using some exotic blitzes. Cooper and Nixon are outstanding blitzers and Walker is above average but the reason the Packers have 16 players with at least a half a sack is the front isn't getting it done.

I will revise and extend my remarks on Ugly Purple OL from outstanding to solid...and add they were outstanding against the Packers on Sunday, which is painful to type. How I despise the Ugly.

I think the DL front has a lot to do with Rebrovich and not just the players. Coaching can make a good player great. My best seasons in HS athletics directly corresponded to my best coaches.

The Bears are a mess. The Seahawks were not at their best even in a season of up and down play. Smith had a bad game even allowing for the fact that their OL was truly awful. That should put our rush performance against them in context. They will likely fire their OC. Based upon that game they should.

The other fact that should be relevant is that, bad though their OL was, the Bear’s was far worse. Seattle easily trounced their previous high in pressures and, when blitzed, the result was 3 of 9 passes completed for 38 yards, 1 INT and 4 sacks. A much easier environment for our DL to look better in and thus our whole D.

Bears: I don't think I've ever seen a franchise so clueless on offense. They have no coaching in this area whatsoever. The best part of the Seahawks game was the end, where they showed pictures of the fans with bags over their heads with cute little inscriptions like "Make It Stop" and "What Am I Doing Here"? Priceless.

Vikings: I don't know what Darnold is worth, but do you really think the Vikings are going to take a chance losing him and then hoping to develop a rookie QB when they can delay it? That's something they haven't done in a while.

Packers: If the receivers are having difficulty getting separation in press coverage, that's a problem-- more fodder to consider in the off-season to go along with finding solutions to our pass rush dilemma.

The Vikings have some options. The transition tag at $35M is about right in terms of money. If someone issued an offer sheet, I would probably match it. No compensation if they don't match an offer sheet, though. This gets a little dangerous. Gute played games with chicago when they used the transition tag on Kyle Fuller.

I think I would use the non-exclusive tag at $41M instead of trying to save $6M. If some team makes an offer sheet, depending on the terms, I might match. But I might well not, preferring to take the two first round picks. [I don't think any team in their right minds would fork over 2 firsts and pay Darnold, so this option probably means the team intended all along. But stranger things have occurred - see below).

The third option is to sign Darnold long-term. Structure is very important here. One-year wonders happen and I think the old issues are there for Darnold. This comes with the option to keep JJ McCarthy and let him learn, thereby allowing the sportswriters can compare that situation to Jordan Love sitting behind AR. Or, MN could trade McCarthy for a first or second round pick. Should get that for him, I would imagine.

MN could just take the comp pick and let Darnold go in free agency. A 3rd round comp sounds light to me, though.

MN could apply one of the franchise tags with the notion of trading him to a team of Darnold's choice. I still don't think any team would cough up two first rounder, but LVR sent a first and a second for Davante Adams. At least Adams was arguably the best at his important position. Still, perhaps MN could get one 1st or a 2nd and something more, and some of those would be for the 2025 draft, not a future draft.

MN has plenty of cap space, enough so $35M or $41M fits without having to clear space. Cam Robinson, Gilmore, and Aaron Jones are their big free agents. I think they let Robinson walk if Darrisaw is returning. Gilmore (age 35) and Jones at their ages won't be that expensive.

I don't think "Ugh" is a very apt description of the NFC North, or the Packers, or the most recent game.

Unbelievably, there's going to be a 14 win team that opens on the road in the playoffs. After Wild Card weekend, it looks like at least two of the remaining 4 will be from the Norris. This is as good as this division has ever been.

Even the last place Bears are a team that should improve. Yes, they've used their proven formula of drafting a QB high in the draft, failing to protect him, and then discarding him to start over successfully a couple of times now. But this time, they have a brand new coach and a potentially awesome QB, so they'll be better...(trying to type that with a straight face).

Minnesota hasn't been to the Super Bowl since Bud Grant, but that's still better than Detroit. Watch Detroit closely, so that you can tell your grandchildren you remember when Detroit got really close to the Super Bowl. Their next loss begins the descent.'

It is frustrating that we didn't beat the Lions or Vikings this season, losing three of those games by less than a FG. We'll have to do better.

"Their next loss begins the descent."

Didn't you say the exact same thing last year? Hate to tell you this but that's a talented team that would be very dangerous if half their defense and their best player wasn't injured. They aren't going anywhere.

No, I didn't say the exact same thing last year.

Hey.....did you notice we're stuffing the run? Does that make you happy?

If they get Montgomery back healthy for the divisional round they can play keep away with that OL.
