Around the NFC North" 2024 Week 4
Ugh
By Mike Price

Not a great week! At least we had some glimpses of positivity and I don't have to write about a 30-point Packers loss.
Vikings
The Vikings held on to win against the Pack, 31-29 (there were two missed field goals for the Packers).
Game Notes
- This was a weird one. The Vikings got out to a 28-0 lead thanks to some bad turnovers and missed opportunities from the Packers and then had an insane punt muff lead to a touchdown right before the half that started an avalanche of Packers points. Unfortunately, they did just enough in the second half to get the win.
- Sam Darnold played well enough. He was 20/28 for 275 yards with three TDs and a pick. I will say that the Packers were able to confuse him a little in the second half with sim pressures and he didn't look as good when his first read was taken away. There were a few more passes that should've been intercepted. I'm still not convinced that he's the guy if this team is supposedly going to go deep in the playoffs.
- Aaron Jones got most of the carries against his former team, ending with 22 for 93 yards. Ty Chandler had just three.
- The haters will say that the Packers offense didn't play well until the Vikings were playing "prevent" defense. As if Brian Flores would ever do that. I think the Packers, again showed that there are holes in this defense. Even when the offense wasn't playing well it was because of miscues and poor execution not really because the Vikings defense was ultra smothering.
- Andrew Van Ginkel was quieter than usual with four tackles but no other stats.
Bears
The Bears beat the Rams 24-18.
Game Notes
- Caleb Williams had an efficient game after he and the leaders on the team met with OC Shane Waldron to tell him to get with the picture this week. Williams was 17/23 for 153 yards and a TD. Not a lot of production but no picks.
- Fresh off a week of insults (about six month from me) and reports that second year back Roschon Johnson could get the majority of carries, De'Andre Swift had 16 carries for 93 yards and a TD - by far his best performance on the Bears. Definitely a good sign for Josh Jacobs next week against this Rams defense.
- Speaking of Swift, he had 72 receiving yards as well - topping the total of the best three-man wide receiver corps in the NFL.
- The defense kept up its streak of not allowing 20 points in a game though it's worth noting that the Rams are about as beat up as possible and still managed 322 yards, which was 60 more than the Bears did.
- The huge bright spot for the Bears D was Jaquan Brisker, who was all over the place recording 12 tackles, a sack, two TFLs, and a pick. It was a breakout game for Brisker who has been up and down over his career but has had plenty of good flashes.
- TJ Edwards had 9 tackles and Jack Sanborn didn't record a stat.
Lions
The Lions beats the Seahawks 42-29.
Game Notes
- This win wasn't without some controversy and luck the Lions took the lead at 42-27 after a horrific OPI call on a fourth down try by the Seahawks and the only reason the Seahawks didn't have 28 was because they did the analytics go for two down 14 thing and didn't get it. Then DK Metcalf got tackled in the end zone and it wasn't called. Refs are the worst.
- The Seahawks had one of the league's best defenses before this game. The Lions focused on crossing routes and YAC and Goff executed that plan well enough to complete all 18 of his passes for 296 yards - 210 of those coming after the catch.
- Almost everyone got in on the fun with Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, the Sun God, Tim Patrick, David Montgomery and even Goff himself having big catches in the game. It was the first game where this many of the Lions' weapons performed well. And the only one not to get a catch - Jahmyr Gibbs led the team in rushing with 78 yards and two TDs on 14 carries.
- The improved defense sort of fell apart against a team that had been league average prior to this match-up. The Lions defense is based on stopping the run and hoping the refs don't call PI and once they couldn't stop the run here and the refs were calling PI the Seahawks were able to move up and down the field at will. Geno Smith piled up 395 pass yards and Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet combined for 118 rush yards. The Seahawks had 516 total yards compared to the Lions' 390.

"by far his best performance on the Bears. Definitely a good sign for Josh Jacobs next week against this Rams defense. "
That is if MLF embraces the run again. He left it far to soon against the Vikes (yes, even with being down 14-0 and on). MLF has a vast history of doing this.
This NFC North is becoming stout and if GB wants stay in ownership of it, let alone, have to compete for it, they had better pack a lunch and roll up their sleeves.

When was the last time the only team not to win in the NFCN was the Packers?

It would be nice to have a straightforward column about the division instead of this same tired old spin every week. The Vikings built a 28-0 lead mostly because they outplayed the Packers at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

I don't think that's correct. I think the 4 turnovers and 2 missed FGs, which have the same net effect as a turnover, did more to determine the outcome than poor line play.
IN FACT, we put 400 yards of offense and 29 points on the board. How is that happening if we're being outplayed at the LOS?
Defensively, they had 34 rushes (because they were ahead) for 120 yards. That's only 3.5 yards/carry. WE STUFFED THE RUN!!!! (I wanted to acknowledge that, because I know how important that is to people). That's not a sign of our Dline being out played. In fact, I'd suggest that poor play in the secondary had as much to do with the 28 points as anything. Remember, after the 1st quarter, the only Viking TD was set up for them on the 4 yard line by a ........turnover!!
I think our offensive line played pretty well. I think our defensive line didn't get the pass rush we wanted because Minnesota's offensive line is better than I thought, and we couldn't keep guys covered long enough for our pass rush to reach home. Again, that's on the secondary. You have to cover guys long enough to make the QB go to his second choice, or reload after a pump fake.
I'm going to have to go with turnovers, not getting outplayed on the line.

Yah, not having JA and CV was quite a surprise to have to make up for in the backfield. The Vikings were going up against practice squad guys.

They have very good WRs, we had backups at CB. It doesn't take a genius to figure this out. They had 3 TDs on the board before we knew what was happening. After that, we did a much better job, but the damage was done.
This is why I say you can never have too many guys who can cover and tackle. You need a lot of them to get through a 17 game season. Our experience with Alexander, and Stokes, over the last two years should have had us expecting they'll miss time this year, too.

That’s misleading. They held them to 3.5 a carry because it was so obvious they were going to chew up clock with a huge lead. The defensive line is suspect. Gary has been a different player since his contract. It’s all there. We seem to bully the weak teams and fade against the better teams. Perhaps we will improve, because we need to.
The North is finally a quality division. At this point we are where we should be. .500 Detroit and Minnesota have played better. Not sure how we would do vs Chicago. Even when we were hot at home last year, we had trouble putting them away.

Yeah, except they didn't chew up the clock. Look at the Vikings possessions after they got the lead: A couple of 3 and outs, some turnovers,.....short possessions that didn't put any points on t he board. Our defense got quick stops and got off the field, where they could get a drink of water while our offense went 3 and out. That's why there were 15 posssessions in this game. After the first 3, and the 4 yard drive set up by a turnover, the other 11 possessions were pretty brief and accomplished little.

Awesome offense in the North....3 of the teams there are scoring 25ppg, but that was September. We'll see who is still rolling up the points at Thanksgiving.
A home loss to a division opponent makes it quite a bit harder to win the division. We're in a hole. Fortunately, we get a game against weak defense this week, and then at home against the Cardinals. This is a great chance for us to get right and move to 4-2.. The Lions next two games are @Dallas and @Minnesota, so they could be 4-2. Minnesota has the Lions, but they also host the AaronRodgersJets, so they'll be at least 5-1.
It's not even midseason yet. It's just been a fast start for some teams.

Aaron Jones with 139 yards. worst gute move ever. Jones was the heart and soul of the team.

Had to get Jacobs.. should have moved on from Dillion and found the money to keep Jones too.

Jacobs is going to score more points, and gain more yards than Jones, over the next couple of years.
