Around the NFC North: Lions Draft

Meh or nah?

The Lions' draft graded out right in the middle of the league, according to draft expert grades across the country. Let's take a little deeper look into each pick in rounds 1-4 and see why they were bad. (Because that's what we do here).

Blake Miller

We were just about certain the Lions would use early-round draft capital on o-line, and they decided to do it with Clemson offensive tackle Blake Miller. Miller's consensus board ranking was 31st.

Let's preface this by saying Miller is a first-round pick, so he will likely be a good player, especially in this situation, but it certainly seems like he could be the type of guy the Packers have success against. Miller is a big bruiser type whose top strengths are all in the run game. That makes sense when you think about what the Lions want to do on offense. Miller struggles against speed rushers, and the Packers now have a bevy of those to pit against him on third downs with nervous Jared at QB.

Verdict: Miller will probably fit right in and be a pro-bowler. Lame.

Derrick Moore

Moore comes in at the other spot that we thought was likely - edge opposite Aidan Hutchinson. He was ranked 63rd on the consensus big board, and the Lions took him 44th.

Moore didn't test at the combine and likely fell to the Lions' pick because NFL teams perceived him as unathletic for an edge rusher. Strictly looking at height/weight/arms length, he is basically the same exact size as Packers edge Brenton Cox. Moore is sort of like an unathletic Rashan Gary, also from Michigan. He got plenty of pressure, bull rushing on every play, but he basically ignored the run and couldn't bend around the edge or beat opposing tackles with speed.

Verdict: Moore will either flame out, and the consensus board worshipers will be delighted, or he piles up a bunch of cleanup sacks as he closes the pocket opposite Hutchinson and make the reach worth it.

Jimmy Rolder

Speaking of reaches, Rolder was selected 50 spots before his board ranking of 167th. Not great!

Rolder is sort of the off-ball linebacker version of Moore - they're both from Michigan, both just OK athletes, both rely on big hits and strength over finesse, and both probably not quite ready to be a plus starter.

Unlike Moore, Rolder is really only good against the run. This is where he flashes good instincts and makes big hits.

Verdict: I can see Rolder as special-teams-only or as a starter for a 7-10 Lions team three years from now.

Miller's top strengths mostly lie in pass protection, which is what you want to see from a tackle. He only gave up a minimal number of sacks in his college career. That's not to say he won't eventually be good with the ground game, but that may take a little while to catch up with the pass blocking skills. I think this will turn out to be a very good selection for the Lions.

So around the NFC North begins and ends in Michigan? I guess another 5 minutes on your keyboard for the state of Minnesota and Illinois was just more than what your deadline would allow? SMH

If you haven't noticed that almost all sites keep these articles short because readers today have a small attention span. Also this is the dead time of year, why not spread them out over the next 3 weeks since nothing is happening anyways?

crazypackfan, I think Mike is doing planning on doing a different NFC North team each day. He started with an over-all one:

I suspect he will have a breakdown of one team each article.

Miller was a surprise pick as there where better known prospects on the board. Brad Holmes has done fairly well in the draft so Lions fans should give him the benifit of the doubt there. He will be their RT and I think should be a good player for them.

UM had a very good defense for years so getting those guys in the next rounds don't feel like bad moves. Their defense has been their problem and these guys where productive.

Some real opportunities for humor. Why aren't we talking about Chicago....which shortly isn't going to have an NFL team? Why aren't we talking about Minnesota, and how they'll find a way to screw things up?

Because it's about business before pleasure, and when it comes to winning the division, beating Detroit is business.

Miller will help Detroit. The offense should score points if they can protect Goff. The problem is that this is a defense that couldn't stop a sneeze down the stretch, and I'm not sure that Rolder and Moore are going to change that.

Keith Abney was probably their best pick, he was a Top 100 guy and lasted until 157. He was mocked to the Packers a bunch of times.

Boy - a lot of downgrading here vs. what I've read from other analysts. Matt Bowen said Derrick Moore was the best edge rusher in the draft.

Derrick Moore had one of the best pass rush win rates among the '26 pass rush prospects, that includes the rushers that were drafted in the 1st.
