Around the NFC North: Needs

What do the NFC North teams need to address this offseason?

As we mosey into combine and then free agency season, you've probably read and listened to 76 or so analyses of the Packers' needs and how we could benefit from everything from offensive line to corner to wide receiver to defensive line. Hell, everything but linebacker and Quarterback. May as well read this one about the three inferior teams in the NFC North. And before the butt hurt lions fans commenters dive into the comment section filled to the brim with rage, remember, you haven't won anything that matters in like 70 years.

Lions

Why don't we go ahead and start with the Lions. As recently as last year, we probably could've talked about Jared Goff here. It's probably time to concede that Goff is good enough to get the Lions into the playoffs so that they can suffer a gut punch loss that leaves fans depressed for months. As Packers fans, we're very familiar with the concept. Of course, that was with Ben Johnson at coordinator, don't be shocked if we're back here next year talking about how 36 year-old Hendon Hooker is the next great (first great?) Lions QB as the Lions eye a $70mm cap hit for Goff in 2026.

The Lions don't really have a lot of huge needs. It seems like they have the spine of their defense locked down. Basically their whole o-line is elite minus one guard. The receiving room is pretty good and, of course, Jahmyr Gibbs is the second best back in the division (let the rage build inside you lions fans). The big weaknesses are corner and the edge rusher opposite Aidan Hutchinson.

The edge rusher need is legitimate but corner is the bigger need. They tried to fill the hole with Carlton Davis and a rookie Terrion Arnold last year. Davis was one of the worst corners in the league the last two years and Arnold was ranked 109th by PFF. Not great!

You have to think the Lions roll with Arnold at one boundary spot and second-year nickle Amik Robertson (57th-ranked by PFF) in the slot. Over-hyped first-round corners who suck in their rookie year in the North always end up being good. That other spot has to be a target this off-season. And it may be the team's only big free agency acquisition if they start signing extensions.

Bears

Here's a team with plenty of needs. The Bears have a young potential franchise player at QB and the best young head coach hire in the league. So they must have a new wunderkind GM too, right? Wrong. It's the same guy who created this mess. Lol.

The Bears spent plenty of money on their current roster but they don't have a lot of blue chip players. Jaylon Johnson at corner is. DJ Moore when he has a good body language. Three of their o-linemen are pretty good. And that's about it. Gervon Dexter had a huge year and needs to keep up the consistency. Former Badger TJ Edwards had his first down year and needs to rebound from that. Really, they could use a guy at every spot but QB.

They don't have the horses ot get pressure with four or to cover long enough when that doesn't happen. Both linebackers have regressed. The receivers have potential, including Kmet. Odunze could be unlocked as a power slot and Moore will be better when he believes the ball will get to him. Keenan Allen could probably be replaced.

Expect the Bears to go best player available in the draft and try to shore up the obvious holes in free agency.

Vikings

The Vikings have a stars and scrubs roster. You know how in fantasy auction leagues, some guy blows his load on like four players and then has hold his nose to fill his roster at the end of the draft. The Vikings have pro-bowl level guys at receiver like Justin Jefferson, TJ Hockenson and Jordan Addison and then Jalen Nailor (102 ranked receiver) in the slot and Ty Chandler at running back. They have two top-20 edges and then Pat Jones at DT and Ivan Pace Jr. at linebacker.

They have someone pretty good in every position group but they could probably add someone in each position group too. They need interior d-linemen and o-linemen. a third receiver, boundary corners, a running back, safeties, and maybe another linebacker. But none of them are spend all your money needs. None of the position would be a disaster if they left them as-is. Like the Bears, they can go best player available but its because their roster has enough talent to make up for the holes.

I think all four teams in the division are going to be pretty good, and that's the first time I've ever said that in the history of the division.
