Around the NFC North:2024 Week 16
Same old.
By Mike Price

The Lions beat up an embarrassing excuse for an NFL team, the Vikings squeaked out a win against an average team and the Bears were the embarrassing excuse for an NFL team. Wake me when something new happens.
Lions and Bears
The Lions took care of business in a 34-17 win over the Bears.
Game Notes
- I was writing the bullets in my head about how the Lions won but their defense was bad again. I calculated how many points they had given up in the last several weeks. Asking how many defensive players you can lose and still be a contender. And then the Bears didn't score in the second half. Of course.
- Keenan Allen had the longest TD of his career in the first half (45 yards, lol) and Caleb Williams was making some throws. It just didn't work in the second half. Williams still finished with 334 yards and two TDs. Odunze and DJ Moore were both involved. When you're the Bears playing a rabbit-foot team, it just doesn't matter. Oh, and it was definitely a D'Andre Slow day - 9 carries for 20 yards. Gross.
- The Lions, who set their franchise record for wins in a season, did mostly whatever they wanted on offense. Goff had 336 yards and three TDs on 10.5 YPA. Jameson Williams had an 82-yard tud (do we still say tud?). Jahmyr Gibbs had over 150 total yards. Even fantasy disappointment of the century Sam LaPorta got in on the action with a TD. To rub it in, the LaPorta touchdown came on a fake stumble play-action pass that the Lions put in because last year Jordan Love hit a big pass against the Bears on an actual stumble. When do we start the prayer circle for the Patriots to hire Ben Johnson? Can we make a gofundme?
- Thought it was worth noting that with David Montgomery out (probably for the season pending a deer-antler spray purchase from his fourth doctor or whatever), Craig Reynolds and Jermar Jefferson got carries over our favorite, Sione Vaki. Vaki did have two catches for 20 yards.
- No one on the Bears defense did anything worth noting.
Vikings
One week after the Packers wiped the floor with the Seachickens, it took a last-minute touchdown from Justin Jefferson for the Vikings to prevail, 27-24.
Game Notes
- Sure every game is different in the NFL and Geno Smith was healthy for all of this one but why not talk about how the Packers embarrassed the Seahawks in Seattle and the Vikings just barely beat them? Unfortunately, while the Seahawks did put up 24 points, no one on their offense played particularly well outside maybe JSN who had 95 yards and a TD. Geno had two picks, Kenneth Walker managed just 3.9 YPC, DK Metcalf had just 57 yards on seven targets, etc.
- The Vikings didn't really have that problem on offense. Darnold had 246 yards and three TDs with no picks. Justin Jefferson had 144 yards and two TDs. Although, it should be concerning that Aaron Jones had just 67 yards on 18 carries. Josh Jacobs made that defense look like a high school team in the first quarter last week and this is the time of year that Aaron Jones sometimes gets beat up a little.
- It certainly seems like the NFC is going to come down to one of the three professional NFC North teams. Hard to not be confident right now as a Packers fan. Each of the three teams has a good defense and a great offense built around making it easy for the QB and a run game. By almost any measure, the Packers' defense has surpassed the Vikings' and the Lions' is at like 30% capacity. Meanwhile, the Packers may be the only one of the three teams with a QB who can consistently create on his own if the offense otherwise fails (to be honest I'll take the Packers' weapons at this point, too). I know I'm getting a little ahead of myself here, but all year we've waited for the Lions or the Vikings to stumble and it hasn't happened. At some point, everyone will realize that the emperors have no clothes. Sadly, with the coaching and talent that these two teams have, it could be us. We could be naked right now. Let's end it on that.

Goff of the the Lions has the best accuracy in the NFL right now by far ... Darnold of the Vikings not to far behind and showing great leadership ... Celab Williams, Like the Bears or not Williams has shown he will be a force even with a franchise like the Bears ... So were does that leave us with Love ?? He has looked very good lately in moments and less terrible in others, teams are loading up and blitzing hoping he makes forced throws into traffic. I don't think teams are afraid of his scrambling either. Can he lead the Packers deep into playoffs or the Superbowl? It will probably come down to his performance against two of the forementioned QBs that I have reviewed. IMHO

Trick play design: Goff bend over, Gibbs fall down and roll like you're doing one of those old "stop, drop, and roll" drills. Oh! The mastery of it! Yes, it froze the outside coverage guy so LaPorta ran free to the pylon, but so would play action with the way Gibbs was gouging the Bears' defense. The Bears are just bad and the Lions were up by two TDs at the time. Watching this game was like watching a special episode of America's Funniest Home Videos that is all crotch shots...wait, that's just about every episode of AFV. You spend more time cringing than you do laughing.
The Vikings are still struggling with the run game post Darrisaw, which is surprising since they have playmakers in their pass-catchers.. Their defense surrenders yards, but they generate pressure and they take the ball away...they do that better than any other team in the division. In the end, they keep teams from scoring...I hate to say it, but right now, they're playing better than the other defenses in the division, but they're running up those numbers against middling and poor teams. These last two games against the Packers and the Lions--who can protect the QB--will be telling.

We're not going to win the division.
Next best thing, we'll make the playoffs as a wildcard. We're healthy and playing well and we'll almost certainly be lined up against Atlanta, Tampa, Seattle, or the Rams. If we win that, we'll be in the NFC final four for the 5th time in 6 years.
Not bad for a team with 3/5 of a line and a coach who isn't very good.

They need to keep winning or they might tie with, or get passed by, Washington and have to open at PHI or DET. That game in the twin cities is looming large, but they can't overlook the Saints.

Truly dobber, I think we can win either of those games. IF you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.
Can you believe Washington? This is like the third crazy game I've seen them play this season.

I really think Washington isn't in that game if Hurts doesn't get his bell rung.

i think it would be hilarious at the end of the year that Detroit lose to the Vikings and wind up on the road for the playoffs. Some odd justice for their front loading and piling on.

It's too bad they can't be passed in the WC by the Packers.

Dobber, just get to the playoffs and have a shot. You have to beat whomever is next. I'm sad that we don't get home games, just for the boost for Green Bay's economy, but start with the playoffs and see what happens.

Kudos Mike Price. You hit it right and hard. We have a very young team. Young coach [age, not experience]. Gald to be rid of #12 drama. Campbell might be the closest thing to Vince in the 21st century [ouch!] And who saw the purple hoard jelling with Sam Darnold. [damn.] And yet, the road to THE SUPERBOWL is a fair possibility. LaFleur doesn't get enough props. The guy is feisty and yet not reckless. Guty had his best draft [OK Cooper DeJean would have been brilliant,] There are at least 16 franchises jealous of us. Go Pack Go

I think you're seriously overvaluing Dan Campbell. """Closest thing to Vince...""?????
Here's Dan Campbell. He's a few games over .500 as a coach. He's won one division title. He led his team to one of the all-time Championship game collapses (almost as bad as us in 2014).
One division title. One division title. If you want to crown him, crown him.

Campbell is all bravado and he's being propped up by some really good personnel and a couple outstanding coordinators who know how to use them. The proof of Campbell will be what happens when he needs to find new coordinators.
