Ask Maggie: The Field Never Bothered Me Anyway
By MaggieLoney
Has everyone had a chance to grab their copy of this year’s Draft Guide? Highly recommend if you haven’t yet. It is well worth your time and energy as you prep for the 2026 NFL Draft! Now, onto your questions:
“What’s more likely to happen: make pick 52, trade up from pick 52, or try to trade down from pick 52?” - Peter
I kind of feel like Brian Gutekunst gets antsy in this draft and trades up from 52. Nothing crazy, like I don’t see him jumping all the way into the first round, but I could see him coveting a specific defensive tackle and moving into the 40s to go get his guy. This’ll be the latest he’s ever made a selection as GM (previous was pick No. 29 in 2021 for Eric Stokes). A lot of the first-round talent in this year’s defensive tackle class is recovering from injuries. If those guys happen to start sliding down the board, it wouldn’t shock me to see Gutekunst pull the trigger.
“It seems like each year for a decade we hear players complain about the outdated grass/turf combo at Lambeau and how slippery it is. Wouldn't this be a no brainer for Policy to address in the next couple years?” - John
This question is super interesting to me because depending on who you ask, Lambeau Field is one of the most highly-regarded NFL stadiums in terms of field quality because it’s a unique blend of Kentucky Bluegrass and SIS Grass polyethylene fibers. It’s the only field in the league using that mixture, and Lambeau became the first stadium in the United States to boast SIS Grass technology back in 2018. The NFLPA prefers grass fields for player safety, and the league is split 15/15 in regards to stadiums that use turf versus terms that use some type of grass.
Given that the installation of the new field just happened in 2018, it’s hard to see Policy doing anything too drastic. I know there have been some complaints in recent seasons about the number of players slipping on the field, but that’s kind of par for the course in an outdoor stadium in Wisconsin in the winter. The recommendation to use 7-stud cleats is there for a reason.
Remember when the Falcons built their new stadium and we had open dialogues about how the Packers didn’t have the speed to keep up with Atlanta on turf? To me, personally, and I’m curious what others think, the Packers would do better to make it part of their home field advantage. Lambeau Field is the Frozen Tundra. Soon, the Bears will build their domed stadium and the Packers will be the only team in the NFC North to play in the elements. We talk about how significant a home playoff game could be for Green Bay in January. Packers players know what it takes to play on the field in the cold. Use it. Be like Elsa about it. Don’t let the cold (or field) bother you, anyway.
“We've heard speculation that the Pack could trade one of their WRs. Personally, I would not. What would GM Maggie have to get in return to trade Jayden Reed or Dontayvion Wicks?” - Tony
I mean Christian Watson, Reed, and Wicks are all entering free agency in 2027, and it’s almost impossible to imagine the Packers keeping all three. At this point, Watson feels like the only real “sure thing” in terms of a new contract. This season is going to be really interesting for both Reed and Wicks, not just for their futures in Green Bay but also as an audition of sorts for the rest of the league.
Knowing how the Packers operate, Reed feels much more likely to get a second contract if it were to come down to him or Wicks. The room will already consist of Watson (extended in this world), Matthew Golden, and Savion Williams. I’m guessing Green Bay also adds a body on day three of this year’s draft, so you’re looking at three returning players and a rookie. If Reed re-signs, too, that bumps the room up to five. Maybe the Packers love what Skyy Moore contributes on special teams? Now you’re at six.
Wicks becomes the odd man out in that equation. As a Day 3 draft pick, he’s already kind of exceeded expectations for a fifth rounder. He’s played in 46 games and caught 108 passes for 1,328 yards and 11 touchdowns in his three seasons. If a team like the Jets calls Brian Gutekunst and offers him a fourth or fifth rounder this year? Then maybe I’m interested so I have some ammo to move around the draft board. But if the market is a sixth or seventh round pick, then I’m waiting until mid-season and seeing if anyone is interested by the trade deadline. By then, injuries will have unfortunately taken a toll and the Packers may be looking for an additional player at another position as they make a playoff push. I’m hanging onto Wicks right now and seeing what his market is like in October.
“Hey Maggie! Any key takeaways from the league meetings this week? Anything ML said, or didn’t say, surprise you? Or BG, or EP for that matter? Thanks!” - Jim
It’s always fun to try to read between the lines during those interviews, but everything felt pretty standard to me. It was nice to see Policy clear up his statements about naming rights to Lambeau Field. I know that was an issue that fans felt strongly about, and rightfully so.
LaFleur’s candidness about player roles on the team stuck out to me. Normally he keeps those thoughts pretty close to the vest, so it was interesting to hear him address some potential locker room conflicts from last season. He seems like he’s taking a hard look at how his coaching staff approaches communication with players, and that’s always valuable. You can tell experience was an emphasis this offseason, both in terms of coaching staff (hiring Jonathan Gannon) and signing veteran additions who are locker room leaders (Javon Hargrave and Zaire Franklin).
I also thought it was kind of funny that new special teams coordinator Cam Achord came highly-recommended from Rich Bisaccia. It really sounds like the decision to step down blindsided LaFleur, so it wasn’t too surprising that he’d take Bisaccia’s recommendation for a replacement.
That’s all we’ve got for this week! Time is flying and we’re just three weeks away from the draft. Send all of your draft (and other) questions to [email protected]. See you next week!

Speaking of the turf at Lambeau Field I remember years ago, I do not know if they still do it, they would keep the grass longer to slow down the opponents that had a team built on speed because they played on artificial turf.

So Maggie, how many picks do we have in this draft? We have no first round pick this year or next, and we have a pick in every other round but the 7th when we have almost the last pick in the draft. Why in the world would we waste picks to trade up for a player we could get @ #52 anyway?
GB needs more picks, not less, and i am hoping for a Wicks trade to get more draft capitol. We still have many needs and position groups that can be upgraded like OL, CB, Edge, WR, TE just to name 5. We will not trade up in this draft from #52.

I agree with Maggie-
THE TRADE VALUE CHARTS SHOW-
GUTE COULD TRADE UP. Why- ?
Edge, DL, His guy. .
40 - is 510
45 is 460
GB-
52. is 380.
84 is 170
120 is. 54
160 is 27
It doesn't take more than two picks.
And you'll likely get a lower pick in return
with the move up.
Throw in Wicks instead?
Yes- I Would for a edge guy this draft
(The run will be on edge guys!)

Really GB needs a: Starting level OL / DL / CB and we could run thru most teams. Next year with all the comp picks I'd do exactly the same thing to get the players we need to start...or the window closes quickly.

Get rebuilding out of your head.
This team was built for the super-bowl last year.

LOL....Yea, while needing 2-OL, 2-DL, 2-CB's, DE with 10+ sacks, TE1 (Injury), TE2 (missing) from team, ST returner, ST gunners to stop the bleeding, Kicker we already had on the team but did not use, WR1 ROOKIE that was MASSIVELY UNDERUTILIZED... Parsons trade would have been perfect timing if the above had beed rectified...LOL AGAIN....Yea, that was last season.

I don't agree with Maggie or you stock. Wanting to move up usually costs more because the trade partner knows you really want something. This is not the year to be wasting picks.
Do you want an Edge:
Jacas=Dennis-Sutton=Moore=Young. They would all work @ #52 so I take the one that doesn't cost 2 picks.
CB-there are too many to list that would work from #52 all the way to #120-no trade needed
DTs there are 5 after the 5th round that would be upgrades in GB-no trade needed

This draft is, given where we pick first, well set up for the win being an extra pick later. Accept a trade back the second potentially, if the draft falls wrong, but hopefully even then there will be an offer to do so in the 3rd.
There are a number of options at most positions of need, as you say. Only perhaps DT and Edge options might decline noticeably in quality from 2nd to 3rd rounds such that we should pick not trade back if a suitable offer emerges. Trading up would be folly this year.

Thanks for the support Cold. With our first pick being in the middle of the 2nd round, who could possibly be worth moving up 10 spots for, and at the cost of 2 extra picks? I am just surprised every time someone suggests or supports losing our big chance to fill as many holes and upgrade backups as possible in this draft.
I would be thrilled if we somehow ended up with 10 picks this draft so we could draft possible starters @ Edge, CB, & NT. And upgrade the O-line backups. A solid upgrade TE to replace Musgrave. How about a DBL up @ CB?
In my view CB is the weakest position group on our team, by far. But as much of an opportunity it would be to trade back and gain crucial extra picks and still get a potential starter @ CB, I have come to realize GB could draft an Edge with #52 that could start day 1. And still get a potential starting CB @ #84 because there are just more solid CBs available from pick 50 all the way to 120.
The Packers should grab 1 of Jacas, Dennis-Sutton, or Moore @ #52 because they could all start next year in GB. Then I would select a CB from Igbinosun, Lee, Muhammed, Davis, Demmings, or Everette. All have enough talent to start in GB in 2026.

Everyone would work @52.
The difference makers are what you go after.
Hint Parsons!
I told you there will be a run on edge.
Your thinking is rebuilding.
Gute should do it because he wants to win.

I think we agree here, too, and Pete Dougherty's recent draft article points to Seattle as an example of drafting the top of your board rather than trying to plug holes.
https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/nfl/packers/2026/04/03/should-pack...
I'm not sure if that's behind a paywall or not, but the gist of his comment is that teams draft better if they stick to their board and avoid making significant shifts to leapfrog lesser players to "fill needs"...mostly because those rookies--if your team is any good--are unlikely to be much more than role players in year 1 meaning your attempt to fill a hole is possibly not meeting the need AND you've passed on TJ Watt...oops.
In the end, good teams stockpile talent in the draft and use FA (or their own depth charts) to fill holes with more play ready guys, if needed. I think one of his key messages is that we tend to see the draft as an immediate fix-it for team holes, and that's not what often happens for better teams.
If Gute does this, my guess is that the wolves will be howling around here on draft day.

So what happens Dobber when we don't have a "next man up player" on the roster already? And teams, example Green Bay Packers, don't have the $$$ to sign an upgrade player to fill the hole, then what?
If we were what NFL great minds predict we are every year, a "potential" Super Bowl contender, we could draft BPA. It just doesn't apply to every team all the time. Bottom line GB has holes on this team, some that have carried over for 2 years, that need to be fixed by using early picks to fill them. The early rounds are where the best talent is for the most part. Diamonds in the rough are very hard to find and the % bares that out.
The Packers have a very weak CB room due to not replenishing the talent since we drafted Stokes, since we lost Alexander, since the Hobbs debacle, injuries, and not taking a CB before the 7th round since 2021. No BPA with our first 3 picks at least, we can get a starting caliber Edge and CB with our first 2 picks.

It depends on where a team is. Holes have to be filled. If there aren’t many holes then one can shoot for the stars and should seek to find players who can be legitimate stars potentially in future. So to draft for elite upside early one either one needs to have built a roster with multiple players developing internally that just lacks a few special talents or to have the cap room to bring in big name talent (and get that right).
Are either of those scenarios true of the Packers right now? I don’t think so. We quite plausibly need help at Corner, on the DT, OLB, OL and RB this season. We don’t have a ton of cap room and we don’t have a ton of picks.
Even if some of those rooms prove better than feared in hindsight, not all are likely to. This draft is going to need to be functional now if we are going to avoid being sunk by gross positional weaknesses/lack of talent.
So unless our plan is to build for 2028 or 2029, which seems like it might be suicidal for this leadership, then we need players who help us become at least adequate across the board to allow the plus players we do have not to be overwhelmed by inadequacy/lack of credible depth around them.
That’s my take and it screams for drafting to contribute now at key positions as the best available route to improvement and to set up a more aggressive platform next year when we have more picks.

You don't fill a hole making a hole.
The players you draft must stick.
Drafting to contribute now?
That is the problem.
NFL copy=
Summary of 2026 Draft Strength (Strongest to Weakest):
1.Edge Defender
2.Linebacker
3.Interior Offensive Line
4.Wide Receiver
5 Cornerback
As you can see. Cornerback is a gamble.

The front office has to be aware of their limitations in this year's draft, i.e. not having a 1st round pick. Trading up makes the situation even worse.
If I were them, I'd take a good look at how the Rams have handled their drafts in recent years. They've built a strong team without high picks for several years.
That being said, I'd still have made the Parsons trade. The plan was working until injuries hit three of their best players.
This team is still ready to be in the hunt for the Lombardi Trophy if they don't get the crucial injuries they got in '25.
They have some needs and roster holes, so does everyone else in the Salary Cap age. What makes me apprehensive is the coaching blunders in big games.

GB took the right FA approach before the draft, sign reasonable FAs that don't negate the Comp picks in 2027. Other than the DT we signed we stayed close to those guidelines. I can see losing a late round pick if we could trade for an upgrade player at one of our positions of need and filling that hole.
The draft is what it is right now with not enough picks to solve all problems. I really am sold now on the idea of taking an Edge at #52 if one of Gabe Jacas or Dani Dennis-Sutton is available as either would be a starter and upgrade from Gary. If they are gone we could trade back 10-15 spots and probably grab Derrick Moore. That might be a spot to gain a pick or 2.
There still should be 1/2 dozen solid CBs with starting potential @ #84 to #104. My favorites are Davison Igbinosun & Malik Muhammed. A couple really good one at that #100 to #120 area are Charlie Demmings and Daylen Everette. As weak as our CB room is any of the 4 could start and be upgrades.
I would love for GB to secure deals now with J Clowney and Calais Campbell but not announce until after the draft. I don't know if it's legal but it would save the Comps. Otherwise an A J Epenesa-Edge, Rasul Douglas or Trevon Diggs if medicals were good, would all be cheap upgrade signings.

This team is perfectly fine....
We need this player, we need that player, we have to fill this hole, we have to fill that hole.

I have it on good source concerning this team, that it's time to win Championships.

AR needed a solid #2 WR with a pretty built team....Way better than JL has minus the WR's we have now....but he did have DA. Gute is really good at not getting 11 NFL starters on both sides of the ball for us....if he actually did that minus injury...I'm sure we would do better in the playoffs....AR team had a lot of Veterans also...The current team has a lot of youth trying to figure things out = not enough Vets showing these kids the way and what it takes to be a Pro bowler, etc. It looks like Gute is trying to put in the Vet presence now....kudos to Parsons to single handedly willing the young DE/OLB in the offseason improvement to make some noise in 26-27....GPG....Happy Easter!
