Bears 22 Packers 16 Game Balls and Lame Calls

The Packers collapse in epic fashion, leaving tons of hard questions in their wake.

Last week's result felt, emotionally, like a repeat of the 2014 NFC Championship game. This one just was a repeat of that game.

At the two minute warning in the fourth quarter, the Packers were up 16-9, were about to get the ball back, and could regain control of the NFC North. Instead, what followed was an absolute disaster.

A botched onside recovery, a costly face mask, and a miscommunication at the line of scrimmage, and the Bears had the game heading into overtime. No problem though, right? Yes, problem. The Packers go on to fumble their opening possession away, and can only watch as the Bears marched down to throw a game winning touchdown pass. If only there had been a two point conversion allowed somewhere, and it could have been a perfect reenactment.

The Packers have probably lost an opportunity to win the NFC North for the first time since 2021, and will spend the rest of the season desperately trying to preserve their playoff lives.

Game Balls

Malik Willis

Whatever happens with Willis this offseason, whether he chases the opportunity to start for another team or is content to stay in Green Bay as the backup, it's been such a pleasure to watch him play for the Green and Gold. When the Packers made that trade for him at the end of the 2024 preseason, it felt like a decision born out of desperation, and without much upside. Instead, he's done nothing but be one of the best backup quarterbacks in the league, and while it's never ideal to see him on the field in place of Jordan Love, it's always just a bit... fun, right?

His ability to create with his legs adds such a different dimension to the offense, and its something to see every time. Whoever our backup quarterback is next season, I hope the Packers emphasize some scrambling ability in the search. After all, you basically always want your backup QB to have that trait. If you run an offense already based around a mobile QB, well then of course you need a mobile QB to continue that. And if you don't have a mobile starter, it's still better to have a mobile backup! That way, your next man up has the chance to catch a defense off guard.

Lame Calls

The Cornerbacks

Despite an okay game from Nate Hobbs (probably his best game a Packer?), it's obvious that the front offices strategy to address the cornerback position has been an abject failure.

This was pretty obvious from the get-go, and while I'm still a big fan of Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine individually, I think it's at the point where the duo is actively holding the team back. Opposing teams just aren't scared to throw at the Packers. Green Bay has an elite safety duo, and one of the greatest pass rushers playing right now, and for the most part those facets of the defense have covered up the cornerbacks. Now though? It's become clear exactly how big a  need this area will be for the team over the offseason , without much in the way of assets to address it in free agency or a first round pick in the draft.

Romeo Doubs

Games are never, ever lost on only one play. Football is the ultimate team sport, and every player on every play contributes to the win. The Packers had (seemingly) a million other chances to win this game earlier than the onside kick. Before the play, Doubs might have even been on his way to a Game Ball.

But some things are unforgivable, and muffing an onside kick is one of those things. Maybe it's the PTSD-esque response that we all have to losing an onside kick, but to be unable to come up with that ball, against the Bears...

Red Zone Offense

There is something very, very wrong with the Packers' red zone offense.

Over the last two weeks, the Packers are 1 for 9 in the red zone. Today, they did not have a single touchdown from within the redzone, 0 for 5.

0 for 5.

I did a film review of the performance last week, in which I concluded that the Packers receivers were simply out physicaled by a smothering Broncos secondary. That was understandable, when you are going up against a top 3 defense in the entire league, in Denver. Against the Bears though? It's a little pathetic. Yes, you lost your starting QB, but you've just got to find a way to get those points on the board. The Packers couldn't do it, and as a result have seen their chances of winning the North all but slip away.

Three and Out

-- Today's Phrase of the Game: "Backs against the wall." The Packers still control their playoff destiny, but if they lose another game through the season, that will no longer be the case. For all intents and purposes, the playoffs start next week against Baltimore.

-- Injuries: The Packers did not escape Soldier Field without a new slew of injuries to add to our laundry list of injured players. Kristian Welch, Jordan Love, John FitzPatrick, and Romeo Doubs did not return to the game on Saturday. It'd be irresponsible to hazard guess on the length of the timeline of any of these injuries, but when you are this late into the season, every injury is a long term injury. John FitzPatrick's injury status might leave the Packers well and truly shorthanded at tight end, and I wonder if Brian Gutekunst might give Marceedes Lewis a call. Of course, it's Jordan Love's status for next week that has the biggest impact on the team, and I'm hoping we'll get some news about his return timeline on Monday.

-- The Packers return to Green Bay for what could end up being their last home game of the season, when they face off against the Baltimare Ravens. The Packers will be desperate for a win at that point, but the Ravens status will be highly effected by the results of their game against the Patriots and the Steelers game against the Lions. Either way, the defense is going to have its hands full with Lamar Jackson, judging by how easily Caleb Williams was able to extend plays and gain yardage with his legs on Saturday.

Agree up to a point, especially regarding cornerbacks. They are both ok which adds up to lost games. Nixon just has never learned to consistently play the ball and so if he is one-on-one with a good receiver, odds are the receivers wins the match up.

But the defense did a hell of a job on Williams this game. Hafley deserves a game ball. So I disagree there Kalani.

Doubs is playing scared. I said it elsewhere, but its obvious to anyone watching that Doubs is afraid on punt returns. He fair catches, ducks to the turf, or runs to the sidelines. I think his concussions have got him spooked. He probably shouldn't be in this role as eventually he is going to drop one.

The Packers outplayed the Bears in nearly every facet of the game and lost. If the Packers meet the Bears in the playoffs, I'd pick the Packers 9/10 games.

Oh and Jordan Morgan played ok. Not great, but pretty darn serviceable. He just can't play guard.

"Doubs is playing scared."

Sad but true jvole. The replay showed he clearly took his eyes off the ball and was looking at the onrushing Bear coverage team when he misplayed the onside kick. I have long thought Doubs would not be resigned (cap reasons), but that play probably was the nail in his coffin in Green Bay.

You must have missed MORGAN'S epic failure vs Montez Sweat's, second half sack.
His pad level, footwork and strength were all so inadequate on the same play he lost contact with earth and got spun 180 degrees in the air with his arms flailing.
Only comparison is the videos of the early dreamsicle TB Bucs.
Hopefully someone can post the video. It will make great fun during bears film review.
Pathetic.

Totally agree with your Hafley statement. Given the injuries and assortment of lunch meats he is putting out a decent defense. Ultimately, tough to overcome the gaps on the D-line and secondary.

It was bad to see them play Morgan over Kinnard. It was good to see Morgan play ok. I can't imagine that putting him on the right side yet again will ruin his ability to play better on the left next season, assuming he'll be able to practice throughout the off season. I do question how all this affects his development though; he's a LT.

If firing people every time a player screwed up the NFL would collapse. Lets chalk it up to a player, knowing better, and making a mistake.

Rule: firing doesn't always mean things get better.

Harry, depends who you are talking about. I agree about Mlf, he has shown to be a winner. I also agree players have to execute.

I’m talking about Coach B who’s ST have been below average for 3 consecutive years and not just below the special team has been a bottom dweller. if Mlf teams were at the bottom 3rd of the league 3 consecutive years he would’ve been fired. Mlf should’ve fired him after last year simply because to address your issue, I couldn’t agree more that firing doesn’t mean better, but when you’re on the bottom or close there’s really only one way to go.

Too many gaps and too many mistakes to expect this team to play at a championship level. I am having trouble seeing where this team will get to the next level in this league. From coaching to talent we are just a step off the pace. My season boils down to getting as far as possible in order to screw the Cowboys out of a high 1st round pick.

This was the toughest loss of my modern day Packers. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory - arrrgh.

This roster has too many holes in it. Let the new GM start to fix it. Counting on you Ed Policy. Coaching same boat. The current group has reached their ceiling. Like was mentioned earlier this year, time to compete for championships. Not having to hope for some other team to lose to make the playoffs.

Whats worse is if you listen to MLF's press conference its pretty obvious he implies Jacobs took himself out of the game after the fumble and did not return. That to me, is very disappointing.

(PS) so did Dobbs after his botched chicken sh(t fumble; but he faked an injury.

The replay didn’t look like it was a knee issue, he actually had really good arm on the ball, it happened while he was being held up by one guy while another ripped the ball out. I like Wilson but I think you want your best in there to beat da bears. Can’t put that onto Mlf, I’m sure Jacobs was begging to play and he played admirably last week in Denver with the same knee issue. So, why not trust him?

I question why the refs didn't blow the whistle after his forward progress was stopped and the Bears were just pushing him backwards for a yard before the ball eventually came out. this "Tush Push - like " b.s. has got to stop; it's ruining the game.

Yes. It's happened on several plays in several games recently. Not at all how the game used to be played. Is this rugby? The rules used to disallow this to prevent injury, which is the objection to the tush push. The narrative that objecting to it is "because one team does it so well nobody can stop it" is simply dishonest. Refs starting to call offsides might rein that in a little, while still avoiding the bigger issue of blowing plays dead at the right time. Amazing there hasn't been a rash of injuries during to this.

Lame- Nixon was terrible (just like the first Bears game; but w/o the "redemption IT"). That initial hit when he blind-sided that Bears WR he hit on the back away from the play was just stupid.
The refs for not ejecting the Bears player after that (2nd) dirty hit on Love.
AI assist. I posted this in another spot: What I want to know is why didn't the vaunted "AI Assist" not look at that game winning "catch"??? When I ran it back it sure looked like the WR never had any control of the ball at all. Plus it hit the ground. IMHO that was NOT a catch. Convenient that in OT the coaches can't question that. I know that's not the most important take from this game, but wtf?
Brinson's rookie mistake of reaching out and NOT LETTING GO of the facemask. At least you could see how mad/remorseful he was after realizing the impact of what he'd done.
Game balls- Willis was fun to watch.
The team as a whole played hard even after Love went down.
Our kicker has been solid on field goals since recovering from his injury and did well in a tough, windy environment.

They seemed to man up after Love took the head shot while Kinnard looked on in a daze. The great game analogy goes out the window if you cannot finish. Doubs should be benched for the remaining season as he looks to be protecting his investment. There is no excuse for the face mask on 3rd and long, nor Nixon standing like a deer in the headlites up his ass, on the most critical play of the game. Again why not be in quarters coverage with LBs covering inside, same as Denver.

I am not that upset. The game was hard-fought, It was thrilling to watch the natural calm and athleticism of Malik-he came in cold and produced, Wilson's had very productive runs, Romeo did have 4 big, pivotal catches (let's not completely demonize him), Hafley's creative defensive response, MLF coached well overall but he is a poor personnel manager particulary with Special Teams and Bisaccia.

GB, though, is not ready for Prime Time. They don't wish to make the hard decisions.

It would require a good look @ Special Teams, Bisaccia, MLF and Gutekunst. Gutekunst cannot build trenches nor an adequate corner room. GB lost because of the corners and ST's. Did we already forget that OL-Kinnard stood by and watched that collision between Brooks and Love sending Love out of the game? Policy will not insist on foundational changes as there is more emphasis on protecting Gute. I would recommend fans seek out interviews of Policy to get a sense of his personality and motivations.

GB will rank 8-9 until there is more honesty.

A good example of team cohesion is Ram's GM,Les Snead and HC McVay-- both are top-performers and they work in concert with each other.
I am getting the sense that Gute/MLF are at odds with each other. There are several posters on this site who give it away.

I am not that upset because I never bought into the SB run-no team with weak trenches/CB room goes to a SB.

So we have the usual array of 'fire everybody' and blame game going around. Here's something to consider: 'any given Sunday'. There are no undefeated teams in the NFL. Consider the Chiefs. Last year in the Super Bowl. This year on the outside looking in.
Consider:
1) The Bears are a much improved team.
2) One play, the on-side kick, likely turned the corner on Packers victory. They dominated the Bears up to two minutes left.
3) Imagine if Micah Parsons, Tucker Kraft, D. Wyatt, a fully health Jordan Love, fully healthy offensive line, fully healthy Josh Jacobs, etc. were playing. The backups still had the Bears on the ropes.
4) The Packers record within the division is 4-1.

As I said earlier, if this team was healthy there would be no team they couldn't beat. Sorry to say that to all the folks who like to find fault with the team. This isn't a bad team.

I generally agree, though when we look at the number of games GB lost this year due to poor ST play, I wouldn't shed tears if they moved on from Bisaccia.

But the ST coaching wasn't the issue yesterday. Their inability to score in the red zone is more of a problem.

We rarely talk about the Packers OC but Stenovich was a pretty good OL coach, as an OC, hard to say. But the GB OL has been a mess this year. Is that on Butkus or Gutey? GB had better success in the red zone under Nathaniel Hackett.

For all the talent we think GB has on offense, they've had an underwhelming season.

Look at the yardage differential in starting position. Did we give up over 150 yards throughout the game? That's not only pretty substantial, it's consistent; nearly every game.

I agree red zone offense is the bigger issue these past two weeks. 1 for 9 will never cut it regardless of other variables.

They’re not healthy and theirs still no team they can’t beat, they just need to stop shooting themselves in both feet and knees. It’s on the players This game 100%, coaches don’t fumble at the 3 yard line or a snap and muff an onside kick.

I agree with your assessment of the organization. It is tough to face some of these truths when you have a profitable, competitive team. In honesty we need to rebuild the O-line, D-line and secondary. How much time will that take and can Gutekunst do it? As Packer fans, we might have to be content with competitive rather than championship.

Jordan Morgan at LT, Banks or better at LG, Rhyan at C, Belton at RG and Tom at RT could be good. Very different from anything tried during TC! You can't reasonably put GM player selection in a vacuum and disregard inept player development by coaches. Draft and develop is a two part process and it's been out of sync for years, at least as concerns the O line.

The CB position is a bit different, that was a calculated risk in order to prioritize O line. I can't fault the strategy, it's the implementation of it that's been lacking. The Safety room was an immediate rebuild into a strength yet you somehow overlook Gutey's contribution to that? . There's been a combination of bad luck (Ja and Stokes)
and not prioritizing the CB position yet.

YES for 2025 the sky is falling in the off-season the o line has to be improved along with the secondary & there is no pass rush without Micah & I have major doubts that Gute & the flower r going to get GB to another SB

Why is Savion Williams even in the game, has done nothing. Our number 1 draft pick gets less touches. I just don’t see the talent in Williams.

Mr Jones, if this is your hobby find another one. If your paid to do this you should be fired. I don't think you have an fn clue what is reality with this team..
Fist valentine and Nixon couldn't make any other team. Our secondary has been a patchwork job for five years
When Jameis who is awful looks hall of Fame. When Flacco to late in the game realizes pass pass pass almost beat you on teams with losing records. I've said for years any team that passes passes passes can beat the Packers.
The rest of your article was just as bad.
Dobbs is supposed to be the hands guy. That silly protection on his helmet says it all, he doesn't want to be hit so he AVOIDS contact.. He dropped the ball out of fear not because of a flub. Then he goes and hides on the sideline like an injured child.
This team is full of second rate players who got exposed..
Williams actually played his worst game of the season and still made our secondary look bad.
If I'm right the vikes end it next week. You can have the rest of the season off too..

I've seen it all before been watching NFL football for 65 years..... Wasn't it the same at the Packer Seahawk playoff game in 2014...? A total collapse at the end of the game that allowed the Seahawks to come back and upset the Packers. Could the Packers have done anymore to help the Bears win last night in the last 4 minutes of the game...? Lets recap, every time the Packers had a chance to end the game the following happened: Fumble, Penalty, Lapse in coverage & dropped passes. It was so obvious what was transpiring... That's todays NFL is so corrupt... No difference in any other professional sport today. The only thing that was legit last night was the officials, they called a much better game then they did at Lambeau field. It is what it is, Packers took the dive.. Bears didn't win last night the Packers handed them the game. I call it the way I see it... That's todays NFL...

Make no mistake, i want Willis to stay in Green Bay.

But really good QB's are scarce in the NFL.

If i'm a team in need of solidifying the QB position, i'm coming after Willis hard.
********
I remember Brett Hundley...
Some Packer fans 2015 pre-season MVP darling, with a QB rating of 129 (in pre-season).
Some Packer fans 'actually' wanted to bench Rodgers and play Hundley...lol.
I laughed and laughed and laughed and......

Now take Willis, he didn't win any pre season ribbons or MVP's.
What he did do in Green Bay in spot duty so far is.....
5 Td's
0 interceptions
135 passer rating

The other thing he does, is bring life into a game.

It's a shame some players had to rain on his victory last night.
He deserved better.

Nobody's factoring in that the opposing defense doesn't game plan for Willis. How he fares as the starter is an entirely different scenario. Don't get me wrong, I love #2 as our QB2. I hope GB keeps him, but there's a major juggling act with the cap just around the corner and we're going to lose several players we'd rather keep.

Keeping Hafley doesn't count against the cap, so I hope they get at least that much right.

I don't think Hafley will leave. I have no doubt he will get interviewed, but I think he will stay.

The Giants reportedly want Freeman from ND.

Well...whether the opposing teams prepare for you or not,

A back up QB still has to perform, regardless.

I mean....this is the NFL.
*********
i remember in his first 2 seasons, when Jordan Love did spot duty for Rodgers, and started against K.C.

He didn't perform well....at all.

Willis has.

I want to use Love’s injury as as excuse for the loss, but it’s patently clear Willis lifted the team to what should have been a victory.
The red zone offense is becoming an embarrassment for a so-called professional football team. The fumble near the goal line was the most significant mistake imo.
A week ago I heard T. Brady on the Colin Cowerd broadcast speaking about Belichick’s emphasis on special teams; they were given as much attention as the “O” and “D”. One might believe after a litany of game-losing ST mistakes (over several years), we might address the problem. I have ranted on this for 10 years.
I have said that if MLF does not make the NFC championship, he shud be fired. Because of crucial injuries I have changed my mind. I now believe he should be fired if we miss the playoffs.
Go Packers!!!

The good=Willis is a starter. Lock him up.
Hatley for La Floor as head coach= Lame? I would do it.
The bad= not taking 3pt FG on 4th downs. Pepe la Puke sucks in big games. Ego as in go for it on 4th and 4.
And the red zone issues are play calling, not execution.
Can someone confirm Im not losing it , but isn't MLF packers 1-5 or 1-6 in playoffs. Ouch.

Great record 76-24 overall, but MLF packers never finish 60 minutes for some reason in the biggest games.
Is it just the combined players or coaching? Hmmm

they don't finish, game after important game they just can't put the other team away...weird things just happen in crunch time...mostly self induced errors...over and over again...its ok, they're clearly not a Super Bowl team anyway..

Willis played with fire, he's ten times a better scrambler than lumbering Love and his passes are zingers not floaters and on target....better lock him up if possible...I would like to see Willis play the whole game next week...whats to lose, this team is not going anywhere even if they sneak into the playoffs and I have my doubts about that...

Collapse, choke, blown opportunity, call it what you want, it's business as usual for this team. Lots of injuries, but they got to where they were in that game with this group, so they should've been able to finish it. Might as well just get to the 5 minute mark and forfeit the game if they're going to gag like that,

Willis was impressive off the bench, but even he joined in on the chokefest fun with the fumbled snap. I think Doubs may have a serious problem. He wears the protective helmet every game so he's obviously concerned about more concussions. I don't blame him. I wouldn't want to see him end up in bad shape down the road, but maybe he should rethink his profession.

The cornerback situation, among other things, has been obvious and pointed out by the fans repeatedly...but what do fans know.

I'm not sure why the Packers WR's aren't allowed to operate in the center section of the endzone, but maybe the organization should look into that.

I was very impressed with the patchwork OL and how they ran the ball with Wilson. Almost unbelievable. They did a hell of a job.

You want to see an eliminated team with a "Superbowl" caliber game? Watch what happens if the Packers need to beat the Vikes to get into the playoffs.

If you can find it, listen to Le Fleur when he's asked why Jacobs wasn't in the game at all after his fumble. It's an absolute embarrassment; he mumbled, sounded almost drunk, then, incredibly, said he didn't know. He didn't say Jacobs was injured, reinjured, benched for fumbling... all he said was that he thought Jacobs ran hard.

He's the head coach, yet he doesn't do defense, doesn't have a clue about special teams, and now it appears he doesn't do offense. What's left for him to do? Maybe it's what I always thought, he's the head cheerleader.

Game Ball to Malik Willis. Kept us in game with TD throw until everything else went to pot.
Best backup QB in game, IMHO. If Love's out long-term, he's the Man. Gives us a shot whenevery he's on the field. But it's a heavy lift.
Lame Call: Underestimating da Bears.
Both Game and Lame: Romeo Doubs, Having a career game. 4 catches early, then the 33 yard TD later, but then..........................well, you know.
Bottom line .... one game at a time.

I haven't seen this mentioned, but obviously I can't review everything on the internet. But, on both of the roughing the passer hits on Jordan Love, it appeared to me that the bears lineman was trying to take Jordan out of the game. I could not help but think this harkened of the New Orleans Saints bounties for knocking players out of the game. That happened a while ago (2009-2011) and Gregg Williams was the defensive coordinator for the Saints. What was interesting to me was looking at the Saints secondary coach at the time: Dennis Allen. He was never implicated, but it sure was interesting to note that he is the defensive coordinator of the Bears.
