Cory's Corner: Are The Packers Being Disrespected?

Respect is earned and the 2023 Packers haven't proven anything just yet.

It’s easy for athletes to claim the disrespect card.

Tom Brady has done it. Peyton Manning has done it and Patrick Mahomes has also walked down the narrow road of disrespect.

Now it’s Packers defensive tackle Kenny Clark that is claiming that the Packers are not getting the respect that they deserve.

“I like it that way,” said Clark on “The Zach Gelb Show.” “This has been one of the first offseasons where we ain’t really been getting the credit, getting the love. Everybody says Aaron determines whether we win or lose, so we love it. We’re going to embrace it. When it comes to Week 1, when the season gets here, we’ll see how everything stacks up. We’re excited about it.”

Clark has a point because according to BetMGM, the Packers are tied with the Bears for the longest odds to win the NFC North. I know that the Packers are hitting the reset button on offense with a quarterback that has more question marks than an ACT exam.

But the strange thing about the NFC is that it’s so wide open. Jordan Love could potentially be the third-best quarterback in the conference or the 14th. I’ve been saying all along that we have no idea how good Love is going to be, but I doubt he’s going to be terrible.

Even if he’s right down the middle average, the Packers have a real shot to win the division. And the reason is because of the defense. This is the first time since 2010 that the Packers have an elite player at each level on defense with B.J. Raji, Clay Matthews and Charles Woodson — and Nick Collins to prove how good that secondary was.

Barring any unforeseen leadership from defensive coordinator Joe Barry, this defense has a chance to be that good. With Clark, De’Vondre Campbell and Jaire Alexander leading the way at each level. The Packers actually might be even better with guys like Devonte Wyatt and Quay Walker poised to make a huge jump with larger roles this year.

In a lot of ways, Clark is right. There are 52 other guys in that locker room and when Aaron Rodgers was on the team, that fact was often forgotten mainly because Rodgers was capable of winning games on his own so effortlessly.

But this year will be the personification of the team. In order for the Packers to be competitive and have designs on a playoff run, everyone must row in the same direction.

It’s a clean slate in Green Bay. Respect is earned and many people are too unsure about the Packers to dole out respect just yet.

I’m going to wait until Halloween on this team, but I highly doubt we are going to get tricked with a roster that has come together so fast.

Hey Cory. Waiting until Halloween? Brave analysis. I think we know enough right now to make an educated prediction about the upcoming season. After all we Packer fans have been closer and more exposed to the inner workings of the team than anyone. The organization as a whole, including players knows exactly what they have and what they are capable of and have been blunt about it. They know they are going to be good and will compete for the division and conference and yes super bowl. Nobody seems to be listening. It's kind of silly to say we "know nothing" about Jordan Love. We actually know quite a bit and from what I've seen we are in for a treat.

Boneman, I agree with your optimism but can't agree about what we know and don't know about this year's team.
I know it will be a fresh start with a talented roster and a manageable schedule.
I don't know how the roster and coaches will stand up to the game day and season long rigors of the NFL.
Excited about the highs but wary of the lows.

Boneman, we project the same. What you & I, and many others here might foresee with the 2023 Packers is one thing, and the rest you said so well.

But, as far as other teams around the league goes, other teams fans, the media? They’re not disrespecting us. They’re just not listening to the pitch fork like we are as the Packers fine tune their 2023 team. They’re too far away to hear.

TC will be one massive sound check. “Check! Check! Check, one. Check two! Two! Two! Check, one! Two!… Two!”

My guess is the Packers will turn it up to 11 Week 1, and they won’t look back. “Yeah. Well, see? This one goes up to eleven.”

Respect is earned. The 2023 Packers will have to earn it.

Are they going to be respected because we took LVN at #13 last draft? No. Musgrave? No. Reed? No.

Watson last year? No. Well, why not?

“Who’s throwing to him?”

No one’s going to give Jordan Love respect until he starts leading this Packers team to a gigantic pile of WINS!!!

Being Packer fans, Kenny Clark, De’Vondre Campbell & Jaire Alexander are “elite” to us… not to the rest of the world.

“Kenny who?” Not a household name. In the last 3 years he’s had a total of 10 sacks. “Elite?” Fervent fans see the other stuff that Clark does which often doesn’t make the stat sheet.

As fans, we’ve gathered info on about 30 new players added since 2022. We project what we guess might be in 2023. We can add up the sack totals, pressures , TFL, INTs, Catch%, ypc & 40 times till the cows come home, and none of it will matter until these players prove their mettle.

The Packers aren’t being disrespected around the league. People just don’t know what we have. Us fans don’t know. Neither do the Packers. Everything is left to be proven.

Disrespect? No -
Rodgers owned the Bears.
The Lions just plain Sucked,( until Last year.)
And the Vikings were the only threat.
So why couldn’t a MVP QB Win?
Well thats whats changed.
The offenses caught our Defense.
And this offense doesn’t have a MVP!
So there is. A no name offense and No MVP.
Be a Happy Boy all you want.
But only a couple of guys made the NFL top 100.
And the real laugh is thinking;
Love can make them better.
Remember hearing how talented the enemy was?
But somehow that talent never amounted to much.
But the scariest part; we value are own more.
So I can see why you want to wait till Halloween.
But the reality is you can’t blame anyone.
Other than the people that put us here in the first place.

There will be bumps in the road, for sure. I think Love will be fine for us. I think our defensive woes came down to either Barry's schemes or poor execution. Bisaccia has STs humming after he became that group's coach. I'd love to say we get 10+ wins, this season. I think I'll go with 9 wins, which is one better than last season. On a team full of young players with high upside and potential, I think 9 wins would give them the drive to be better in the next season. I see us only getting better as time moves on. We do need 2nd year guys to step up, now, though. I feel the coaches are developing a winning team and we will see flashes of that soon enough. GO PACK, GO!!!

"This is the first time since 2010 that the Packers have an elite player at each level on defense". The Packers had 1st rounders at each level of the defense going into last year after they added Quay Walker. That is one of the main reasons why last season was such a disappointment. We fully stocked the defense with elite players but Barry had them playing scared of the line of scrimmage. I'm going into this season with a positive attitude but the defense needs to put up or shut up!

I agree with your sentiment, b&b. Our pass D was actually good. It was our run D that was very bad, and our scoring O was abysmal last season.

Gutekunst added a ton of players this off-season which should help both problematic areas immensely. He also added pass rush, which should help the Packers D get off the field so the O has more scoring opportunities. WR & TE has the potential to explode onto the scene with Love and his canon. Watson, Doubs, Reed, Musgrave should all make some serious noise.

A lot to like from afar. Especially our Packers being under the radar. We might as well enjoy it while we can.

I agree with Greengold! Respect always need to be earned! No one will gives you respect just like that. You need to prove you can do it. Not only do it, but do it on high level. Interesting is that you can have a group of high talented players, but if they are not playing as unit, their talent will be wasted.

Smart guys knows that. Now, it is the time to repeat to whole team constantly - "You are unit and you can achieve your personal goals only through achievements of unit!"

That story was missing last 5-6 seasons with Packers. Everybody was talking how FPQB wins on his own and success should and would only come through his excellent showing. That was so far from the truth as we saw so many times at the most important moments of the season.

Ask yourself why Lions won 2 times vs Packers last season. I will offer the answer. They played as unit (all 3 phases)! Packers leans on some hero balls from their FPQB, who failed in the most important moments. Because he was standing alone vs opponent. Because every Packers player play for himself.

Who forced Packers to one player wins all? Time will tell. But that happens in all collective sports. You can have team full of stars (for example soccer team Paris St. Germain was never able to win it all in Europe because of exactly that reason - they had team full of stars and expected that one of them win for them). And when you see who wins - the team which plays as unit. Star player need to understand that and when that happen his excellency help the unit. Otherwise it ruin the unit.

I believe that Jordan Love understands what I just wrote and I hope that team will back him in that position. From limited sources we have about state of the team it looks like that team unite about the goal, not about the player. If that is the case, limit is over the sky. Limit is the universe.

It sure seems like the team is backing him, croat! Very much so.

Now they’ve all got to show it in their play. Clark, Campbell & Jaire were all called out as being elite. Personally, I think now, in 2023 they have a chance to be.

All-Pro honors are great, and really an important part of the measure. Only Campbell made 1st Team All-Pro (2021). Once. Jaire made 2nd Team All-Pro twice in 2020 & 2022. Clark has not.

Not knocking these players at all, and they can’t do it alone. TEAM… We know Gutekunst FAILED to surround Clark on the DL with quality talents for years. Kenny Clark has really been the LONE BRIGHT SPOT on our DL since he was drafted.

Jaire’s been our lone bright spot at CB. Campbell at ILB was in 2021 in an epic way.

I think we are finally getting the pieces together to run this defense as intended.

Clark has help with Wyatt and TJ Slaton in his Year 3. I love Slaton and think he makes another jump in 2023. Wyatt should be a beast this year. Jonathan Ford at NT? Same after a full year immersed in development. Adding Wooden & Brooks has me lit. What depth, like I can’t recall since the 90s.

Jaire has help in a pretty damn dynamic rookie in Carrington Valentine, while Stokes heals. If we can get the Safety help we crave from those assembled, all the better.

Campbell being healthy will hep along with Walker making good in his Year 2.

What I want to see is full commitment to their best play possible, consistently. And then do it again. And, again. Infinity.

THAT’s “elite.” Perennial All-Pros, who most importantly are focused on the ONE GOAL of the TEAM: Winning Lombardi Trophies, and nothing else.

T. J. Slaton could be a really important player this year. I've read that he is essentially the starting nose tackle now. At 330 pounds, he has the bulk to play that position, leaving the slightly less huge Kenny Clark to play DE, which is probably a better fit for him. Clark has been arguably miscast at NT during most of his career. Eating double teams is a waste of his talents.

The run defense is still more than a bit suspect until proven otherwise, but at least the Packers have shaken some things up. Dean Lowery being gone is a plus for the run defense, as that was not his strong suit, and his departure opens up more snaps for Slaton and Devonte Wyatt. Slaton playing more NT is another potential plus. Beyond that, we have to hope for improvement from Quay Walker, De'Vondre Campbell staying healthy and getting back into form, and maybe Lukas Van Ness adding something to the equation. There is potential for significant improvement.

The facts are there is so much UNKNOWN about this Packers team it's impossible to know how they'll look and respond week one, especially on the offensive side of the ball. I mean 2nd year players leading the WR room and rookie TEs expected to lead the way at that position are a little concerning when you have a QB starting for the first time as THE MAN in Green Bay. Throw in the entire right side from the Center position over to RT is still up in the air only adds to the questions...And that's JUST the offense.

On defense Cory is right, the Packers do have elite to borderline elite players at every level EXCEPT safety. Even with the issues at Safety my main concern is Barry. If they start the season like they were playing at the end of last season and getting better then the Defense and running game probably can carry them...For a while.

2023 is the season of the UNKNOWN...And for once I'm totally okay with that. My spin is I think it's going to be the START of some great Packers teams of the future and why shouldn't I? It's better than the doom and gloom of some. Reality is nobody knows. It's going to be fun!

I come on this site....a Packer FAN site....and see people disrespecting the team. The front office is a "clown show", Lafleur is a guy who is over his head and has been riding Rodgers coattails. A bunch of our players aren't any good. Our Defensive Coordinator should be fired, etc.

Why should the national media be any better?

"I come on this site...a Packer site...and see people disrespecting the team".

Here's a box of Kleenex.

The best fan is the one who can be hard on their team, demand better, and simply think everything isn't,

As things change, opinions change. What's the point in this site, or any other, if everyone has to say the same thing, and feel the same way? It seems you just want everyone here in a circle bent over blowing smoke up each other's arse. Grow up, and learn to accept other opinions. You should 'RESPECT' people who have different views.

I respect what Clark, and others might say, but it doesn't mean I have to believe it instantly, just because they did.

Taryn, I see more insulting stuff about the Packers here than I do on Bears sites.

Saying "I think the FO has made a mistake by....." is one thing.
40 posts about clown shows and dumpster fires is something different, IMO.

You need to discern between difference of opinion and simple instigation. If you can't, it's likely because you see only one way, and that is as wrong as they, who simply want to instigate. It doesn't make you better, but a lower equal.

I've put up with a lot over the years, by those who think one way, and many of those people are no longer here, for whatever reason, but I am, because I allow others to voice different opinions, without calling them names, saying they aren't fans, etc. Like you do still. There's more to being a fan than just saying everything is great, and they can do no wrong, or that they can't be bad. They aren't, they do, and they might be. How hard is that to accept as possible.

While that's an entertaining visual at best, I can't picture it being anything close to what LH wants. In fact, I'd go out on a limb and say such a scenario would make LH extremely uncomfortable - much like seeing Dean Lowry doing naked pull-ups. And, while I'm no expert in manipulation of the human spine, or abnormal patterns of mobility, I am compelled to call into question the likelihood of such a stunt being pulled off without significant injury to everyone involved.

At least Kenny Clark didn't use the D word. He was classy about it and did not overstate his case. Heck, Travis Kelce claimed the Chiefs were disrespected because the Eagles were favored by like one point in the Super Bowl. I get so tired of the "disrespect" angle. If that's what athletes need to believe to get motivated, fine. But they would be better off keeping it to themselves instead of being so dramatic about it.

I don't think the Packers are being disrespected. They are just being underestimated. And that's understandable. They have a new QB and are leaning heavily on rookies at the TE position. I think the WR position in particular is being underestimated though. They have a couple of really promising second year players there, and that's not the same as counting on rookies. Lots of players get really good in their second year in the league--especially when they were already pretty darn good as rookies. Meanwhile, the RBs, O-line, and the entire defense is chock full of veteran experience. This team's reliance on youth is true up to a point, but I think it's been exaggerated.

They're called 'opinions.' At this point, none of them are wrong, and people are allowed to have them, whether positive or negative. All of this 'oh, we're being so disrespected, no one gives us a chance' crap is BS. Lighten up, Francis.

By this time next week, we'll be talking about actual action in training camp.
If the players are as excited as the fans here at CHTV seem to be, it should be good times in late July and throughout August.
