Cory's Corner: Finding A Place For Bo

Bo Melton isn't playing his natural position at wideout during training camp, but the Packers have shown that they just want him on the field.

First, it was Matthew Golden taken in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Then it was Savion Williams taken in the third round.

The Packers already have Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks returning. Christian Watson is coming off a torn ACL and actually looks surprisingly spry in camp and even Malik Heath has shown plenty of athleticism so far.

So where does that leave Bo Melton? You remember him right? He was the first Packers player to have a 100-yard receiving game last year in Week 17 against the Vikings. His quick feet combined with his unwavering work ethic made him a mainstay in the Packers locker room.

Then the Packers hinted at Melton becoming a defensive back in minicamp and he has played more snaps at defensive back in training camp.

“I feel like I’ve grown a lot,” said Melton. “I’d barely even played and I’m just going out there now and over there jumping certain routes. I’ve still got a long ways to go, but I feel like we’re on the right track. Playing receiver, I kind of know movements, releases, concepts, stuff like that.”

Melton, 26, knew that earning playing time at wideout would’ve been nearly impossible. The Packers wide receiver room has so many top athletes that just getting on the field would’ve been an accomplishment.

But Melton hasn’t pouted. He has continued to work and he has continued to grind. The Packers obviously really like him because they continually are looking for ways to get him on the field.

“What I love about Bo is that he said, ‘Whatever’s best for the team, I’ll do it,’” said Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. “How many guys today are like that? Not many. You win with guys like Bo.”

Hafley is 100 percent right. You win with guys that put the team first and then go out and showcase that mentality each and everyday. You can have the best players, but it won’t do you any good if you have a bunch of selfish players.

That team-first mentality is exactly what can spread throughout a locker room. Other players will see Melton playing corner or running back a kick, while still being upbeat and happy. Even though he isn’t playing his original position of wide receiver.

That’s what leadership looks like. Melton could’ve easily pouted and said, “Cornerback isn’t my position. I’m only playing wide receiver.” An NFL player has every right to say that, but there are also consequences for that. What team is going to want to keep a guy like that?

Melton already knew that just making the roster is an accomplishment for a seventh round pick. But seeing as how the Packers have proven that they really want Melton around tells me that Packers coach Matt LaFleur and Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst have seen something in him that should be packaged and sold.

So for all the wide ranging tests that NFL teams do on college prospects, the thing that cannot be measured is heart.

And Melton is showing in camp that his heart is bigger than everybody else’s.

Not that it means much, but every fan I talk to (and I suspect much of the fan base) is rooting for Melton to make the switch and the 53. Guys with Melton's team first attitude are a refreshing change from some of the prima donna's that can dominate today's headlines. I hope he makes it both for his sake and to fill the Packer's need for a #4 CB.

Without disagreeing in any way with what you are saying, I personally want Melton to succeed because he’s got the tools (and attitude) to be a true sideline corner. Other than Valentine, against talented deep passing offenses, Nixon hasn’t convinced me on the perimeter and Hobbs is as yet also unproven in that context, having mostly had success inside.

We can’t always play short zone coverages and expect success. Sometimes we have have agile CBs who can just take and stick with faster WRs against good QBs and passing offenses. That’s no longer our bread and butter, but to win when it matters, we have to be able to do it.

Yeah, it would be nice to have a CB with long speed and Melton has that. I just may take him awhile to learn all the techniques needed to play the position properly. It also may help him that his brother plays CB in the league. I suspect the two talk often and Melton could certainly seek advice and tips from his brother on how to play specific receivers.

And Melton also played cb before, although not at this level. But what will help him make the 53 is his ST prowess.

I've been a fan of Bo Melton all along. I have no idea what # CB he might be seen as or what # WR for that matter. Somebody that can PLAY in every phase of the game is just hard to keep off your roster ...

Our fastest WRs, in order:

Golden Bullet
Mecole Hardman
Bo Melton

I tend to disagree with a few statements. First, it's not selfish or "pouting" to say you want to continue at WR, and certainly other teams would take a look at Melton if released. It's great if he wants to stay and help out anyway he can, but there's the possibility that he was wanting to be a dual role player, and felt he could get the training in GB. Maybe he wants to expand his options and potential for other teams. T. Hunter playing dual roles might have signaled that it's possible in the NFL.

I don't lnow if being a jammer on punt coverage alone will earn a roster spot, but jammer and backup CB is much more attrative. Melton's decision to train at CB is admirable, but I don't think he's doing it just out of the goodness of his heart.

I also don't think playing him with the ones in TC means the Packers really want him on the field. I would think its more about getting an early assessment to see if it is likely that he has or can learn the skill set that would him a shot at the 5th perimeter CB. If he doesn't look likely and ST alone won't make the team, then the decision to release him is easy.

I'm sure Melton saw the logjam at WR and realized that his better opportunity lay at CB. It still takes some courage to try and make that change which is not easy.

I think the Packers are encouraging the change for one reason - they need a CB with long speed and don't have one right now with Alexander and Stokes gone. Hopefully Melton can make the conversion.

I think he knew he couldn't make this team as a WR. I wish him well. It wouldn't be the first time a WR successfully converted to CB in the NFL. Sam Shields, Trevon Diggs. He has the tools and gives it 100% and I think he'll contribute as a db.

Shields and Diggs both switched to CB in college. What Melton is doing is really rare, or at least it will be if he's successful. He appears to be off to a very good start.

Jammer and gunner. He may be better at gunner. That matters if he plays all 4 teams.

Jack of all trades, Master of None.
Finding a place for Bo -
isn't going to make this a better team.
In fact; I'll say it will have a adverse effect.

try to put a little more effort in rhyming in these couplets. Here is an example to make your little poems pop.

Jack of all trades master of none,
So it's fuck an eye chart, y'all need glasses
Bo aint a corner, this swaps a disasta
5th corners, 4th corners, why they let Ja run
Movin receivers, what's Matt thinkin, it's a Wisconsin tradition, he's got to be drinkin
so it's step back, run back, stick to 11, Bo's tryin it, but Stock ain't buyin it.

How does finding an extra role for one of GB's best ST'ers create an adverse effect? And it's not like he's been sucking at the conversion. While keeping a blazing fast guy on your roster who could help if Armageddon happened to the WR room.

Cory mentions Melton running back kicks. I didn't think he did that. Did I miss something, or has Corey led us astray again? Last I heard, Melton was a perimeter blocker on the punt return team.

"Finding a place for Bo"

That's the wrong sentiment. The Packers aren't trying to shoe-horn a lesser player onto the roster. Bo is trying to prove he has enough value to the roster to stick.

We already know that Melton's a fringe roster WR. He is capable of contributing from that spot, but is far enough down the pecking order to know he's unlikely to make the 53 on that alone. If he shows enough to be a contributor as a DB AND can gun and/or return on STs, then he's someone akin to an OL who plays 4 spots: he gives you significant flexibility out of a single roster spot on game day and his value goes up significantly. But he still needs to show he can be that guy.

The player you just described is former DB Jarret Bush. In Melton, should he make the final roster, the Packers have a utility player who can contribute as a CB, WR and on STs. He’ll add depth at all three positions from one roster spot. I hope he proves to be a capable CB.
