Cory's Corner: I'm Worried About One Thing On Friday

Is the Packers rookie offensive lineman up to the task?

There is always plenty to worry about heading into the first matchup of the season.

Will first year Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley be the ointment that this defense severely needs? Not just in philosophy in being aggressive to the ball but making defensive players truly believe in what will make this team move forward.

Those things are important ahead of Friday night’s game down in steamy Brazil, but there’s something else that is making me wonder.

Jordan Morgan is slated to be the starting right guard for an offensive line that will likely be just above average this season. The rookie largely played left tackle at Arizona. He will likely be matched up against the ninth overall pick from the 2023 NFL Draft — Jalen Carter.

The 6-foot-3, 314-pound defensive tackle had 32 tackles in his final season at Georgia in 2022 and also 31 hurries. All told, in 38 collegiate games, Carter had 18 1⁄2 tackles for loss and six sacks.

Carter only played 51 percent of the defensive snaps last season and is on track to get more of a role this year. He had a back injury in Week 8 last year, but he still only missed one game last season.

This is why the Packers covet versatility on the offensive line so much. They need guys that can virtually anywhere at any time. Morgan only played left tackle but the Packers knew that Morgan’s short arms would transform him to guard.

“Having guys who can play multiple spots that are athletic enough to do it and strong enough to do it and smart enough to do it, it gives you a lot of comfort,” said Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst after the 2024 NFL Draft.

Morgan was taken 25th overall simply because the Packers knew that they could move him where they wanted him to go. There’s no way the Packers take him in the first round if Morgan was unwilling to move to the right side and go to the inside.

The 23-year-old Carter will push the 23-year-old Morgan very quick. Morgan’s speed will be tested. Morgan’s toughness will be tested. But most of all, Morgan’s psyche and confidence will be tested. Carter will be looking for any way to throw a wrench into the Packers offense that looks like it is being fueled by rocket boosters.

Morgan doesn’t know it yet, but he is the key to how this offense gets off the ground through the early part of this season. Think about it. The majority of the offense has not played a meaningful amount of preseason snaps.

To counter that, Morgan is a proven winner by leading his team to the state playoffs for three straight years and he was also a key cog why Arizona improved by nine wins from 2021-2023 — the largest win improvement in that time in school history.

Friday night is a huge test for Morgan. He will be asked to do plenty but will get saddled for blame if things go sideways.

Morgan knows what this game means. Not just because this is the season opener, or because it’s the fabled Green Bay Packers. It’s because there is much riding on this season. The Packers are so close this year that they desperately want everyone to be in lock-step.

If Morgan can transfer that winning attitude he has grown accustomed to in high school and college, then the Packers are in for a real treat.

Reports this morning indicate Sean Rhyan will start at right guard and Morgan will likely alternate with him on a few plays. Morgan missed much of training camp so the coaching staff is not likely to put him in a position to be eaten alive.
I do worry the Eagles offense will test the new defense especially Hurts and the Eagles defense will shut down the Packers offense.

Plus, we have a rookie unknown kicker.

That's enough to worry about.

I worry about why I paid NFL Ticket $299, but I can't watch the Brazil game unless I subscribe to peacock. On the bright side, I originally turned down my renewal, because they wanted $399. They immediately emailed me with the $100 off price. I was just looking at their webpage and they are now asking $479! I realize NFL Ticket is Sunday Games only. Wife and I watch the Packers of course, but she also likes the Chiefs and we watch the Jets to see what Rodgers does. So, the Sunday ticket at $299 is worth it to us. But, missing the opener kind of sucks, and I imagine the "Peacock subscription required" games pizzes off fans all over the country. We see the super rich owners, the rich players, and wonder if there's any end to greed. OK, sorry for the rant. Go Pack Go. I'll be listening to it on Sirius.

Peacock is $7 a month. There's probably a free trial. You also get the premier league, which is worth it by a factor of 10. For the $7 bucks, they have some good movies for distraction, and they just added all the remastered and digitized Homicide - life on the street episodes which are wonderful and have been heretofore unavailable to stream.

With Rhyan and Morgan both available, it seems like an odd thing to be Cory's "one worry."

Mine is the defense.
I'd feel a lot better if Cooper (and Hopper) had played all preseason.
I'm also concerned that our vaunted DEs may not be as good as we like to think,
and if they aren't a major force, this defense is going to give up big plays.

The worry spotlight should always be on Myers. This guy is a LT and they play musical chairs again. Sua will be starting for Andy Reid on Thursday night. They want a group of lineman who can move in space. The question is whether they can play power gap when necessary to get the short yardage first downs.

Myers gone.
Zack Tom to center.
Walker to RT
Morgan LT.

I picked King Sua over Morgan because
he would start at LT or RT.
He's starting at LT for KC.

This seems pretty straight forward from Jannes, but I've gone ahead and attempted to translate for you (Apologies Jannes if this isn't accurate):

***
"The worry spotlight should always be on Myers. "
Josh Myers is the weak link on the OL.

"This guy is a LT and they play musical chairs again."
I think Morgan is a tackle, but they aren't playing him there and now they are trying to find a spot for him.

"Sua will be starting for Andy Reid on Thursday night."
I think the Packers should have drafted Sua (Kingsley Suamataia) instead of Morgan.

"They want a group of lineman who can move in space. The question is whether they can play power gap when necessary to get the short yardage first downs."
The Packers tend to draft OT's and convert them to other positions because they value pass blocking over all else, and they also run zone blocking schemes much of the time which requires movement skills... but I'm not sold on that approach because when you REALLY need a yard, I believe the only way to get it via power running approach, and I question if an OL comprised of dancing bears can get it done.. I'd rather have an interior line of maulers.

***

General sentiment is " I question Gutekunst's drafting and the Packers' overall philosophy on the OL"

At this point do we even know if Morgan will be starting?
He was going to be the starting RG until he got hurt. Since then Rhyan has stepped up and improved. From what I have seen is Rhyan will most likely be starting and Morgan will either be the main backup or will rotate in. LaFleur did say they have a plan.

Right now with the game fast approaching we have a few things that we will have to think about.

For GB, how will Josh Jacobs fit into the offense. How will the 2nd/3rd year weapons take a step. How will the OL look as a whole.

On defense what will our new defense look like. We have a lot of talent on the defense, but we have no clue what its going to look like. We have thoughts or ideas of what it may look like. But until we see it, we are mostly guessing. There are a lot of new pieces as well. Our entire safety room is different from a year ago. How do they use the safety's. Do they go with 3 Safety looks more? I could see them potentially going with 3 safety's when opposing teams go to 2 TE or 2 RB looks.

On Special teams we just added a new kicker. How will he look. Since he hasn't even kicked in a game with GB do they change how they call the offense to try and avoid kicking FG's? Maybe he has shown enough to make them feel more comfortable kicking FG's and that changes how they call as well. Also how does the new kickoff rules change what they do offensively.

There are a lot of questions to be answered. But I know one thing. I am very excited for Friday night!

I really do not like the tag team approach. If stamina isn’t an issue, play the best one and be done with it until injuries or play in training demands otherwise.

I’m going to be very interested to se if we can run block at least adequately. If not, I think it’s time to ask the coaches why we aren’t improving and why that’s acceptable year in and year out. If we do, then a credible ground game will make a big difference in this game I think.

The biggest question for me has to be whether Hafley’s D works in season and how effective it is. Im sure that there will be issues in its first game out (The Eagles are in the same boat), but does it look sound in terms of fundamental concept?

Cory, who is your spoon supplier?

You know Jordan Morgan isn't starting. You know he was drafted to play LT. You know Rasheed Walker has kept his position, and Jordan Morgan has been tried at RT because there's been weakness there and at C, while Sean Rhyan has also been tried at C and did ok.

We don't at all know that this O line will be a little better than average. We do know we have two very good tackles, a very good LG, and the possibility of continued weakness at C & RG which could mess up our entire offense if it can't be corrected. We know that injuries have prevented testing out all possible combinations, and the Eagles aren't a good opportunity to try new things.

Our roster is very enthused to play under Hafley's leadership, there's no question about that. We know that his style does contain risk of allowing big plays, and we know that Barry ball allowed big plays but moreso long drives that were almost uncontested. This defense could hardly be worse and even if it is that's the risk inherent to trying anything new.

Not a single player on our roster is better suited to Barry ball, while they will all perform better in the new defensive system. Friday will be a proverbial baptism of fire, assuming the Eagles don't just continue their downward spiral from last season. Everyone on our defense will have the opportunity to make GREAT plays. That also means they'll have the opportunity to completely suck. And everywhere in between.

Preparation is in its final stages, and we have a mostly healthy roster. Hopefully recovery continues rather than more injuries.

Ah, the narratives from Cory.

Here's one that is a narrative of a narrative:
The narrative...Morgan's "short arms". 1 inch shorter than Bakhtiari's. A gaudy 3% shorter. But Jordan is also 1 inch taller than David. Morgan was as successful, arguably even better playing T at AZ as Bakht was at CO.

The narrative of the narrative: "the Packers knew that Morgan’s short arms would transform him to guard."
They KNEW that? Gutey knew he wanted a top T talent taken in round 1 but would move him to G?
Not so sure I agree with your police work there, Cory! (cue movie "Fargo").

Morgan challenged Walker at LT but Walker would not relinquish his spot.

But early on the rookie was viewed by the coaches as one of the likely Best Five, moved the young man to G, and by al accounts, showed he belonged. Rhyan was an injury replacement and played OK. I expect Morgan will be back at RG soon, sans any injury. And he will become a moveable chess piece on the OL.. aka Tom and Jenks.

I remember Brian Bulaga dropping to the end of the 1st round, because "his arms are too short". Silliness. I think we're 6 deep on the OL, before the injuries hit. We have no decent back up tackle, but I think they'd move Morgan to T and have Rhyan at RG if Walker or Tom get hurt. With some decent luck on injuries, I think we'll be an above average OL.

We had it handed to us in the playoff loss. Against Dallas Aaron Jones saved the day. The biggest improvement late last year was Runyon. Our run blocking was sub par all season, with Jones helping to cover that somewhat at times. We did pass protect better later, but the IOL was an issue again for much of the season.

Nijman had gone, with no obviously better replacement, but, as importantly, Jones isn’t with us and Runyon has gone as well. Myers seems exactly like Myers has been. We are good at starting T. The question is can Morgan or Rhyan elevate us above last year, and also add impact in the run game? If not we are average as an OL (good pass, poor run blocking) with a lead back who depends on it more than Jones.

Just as darkness is the absence of Light, worry is the absence of Hope.

There are more reasons to be excited about this Team than in years' past. I have hope in the RG & Kicker...& hope the backup QB holds the tablet all. game. long.

First game of the season and there will be numerous unscouted looks by both teams. The key to this game is for the Packers to win the LOS. No different than any other game. I'm expecting Rhyan to start at RG and possibly Morgan to be rotated in a few times during the game. The Eagles will be a good test for the Packers OL and they will need to rise to the occasion especially in the run game and keep the Eagles offense off the field with long, sustained drives.

On defense the Packers new defense will need to stop the Eagles ground game and make them one dimensional. Hopefully the Packers will be playing with a lead. They will need to have a spy on Hurts since he can make plays with his legs and the Packers have had trouble with running QBs forever. Maybe that will change with Hafley's defense.

I think if the Packers win the toss they should take the ball rather than defer. If they can score on their opening drive that will give them confidence and it could set the tone for the rest of the game. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Yeah, definitely take the ball if you win the coin toss. It worked well for them last year.

Last I heard, the Packers have a plan at RG but will not reveal it. Morgan beat out Rhyan quickly in training camp, but it may be a bit much to throw him out there full time in the first game after he missed all the preseason games.

I agree with everything you wrote. This is a challenging and interesting game to start the season.

Yes, I believe the Pack Attack D should be the antidote for the running QBs. It is better to get the QB running out of pressure & panic vs making a choice to run due to a wide open lane ahead and late pursuit.

The other antidote should be the focus on increased turnovers. We even saw this in the preseason games from 2nd and 3rd teamers.

I've been on an airplane where we were, in fact, told to "assume the crash position". It definitely wasn't as funny as the Airplane movie! My FIRST airplane round trip ended with my wife and I in a prop plane from Chicago O'Hare to Milwaukee's Mitchell airport. The flight lasted over an hour and a half (a typical 20-minute jaunt) and involved three different attempts by the pilot to swing out over Lake Michigan to avoid three funnel clouds. Lightening was everywhere and we had the wing view of all the lightning around us (which was constant). We hit wind shears so strong that on multiple occasions the overhead luggage compartments spewed out stuff into the cabin. One wind shear dropped us with a jolt so strong my glasses CRACKED IN HALF and fell off my face! Finally, the pilot told us to buckle up as we were going in for the third landing attempt and the airport had just informed him the lights for the runway were out due to lightning, so emergency vehicles would be lined up so he could see the runway. Then a stewardess's voice came on over intercom and told us to "assume the crash position". As my wife and I gripped each other's hand with our heads in our laps, lightning everywhere outside and luggage items strewn about inside I was absolutely certain we were about to die. I'll never forget the slam as we hit the runway (one of the wheels collapsed just after we de-planed). And, just like in the movies, we all broke into applause when the pilot got us down. When we went down the landing stairs (my wife leading me since I could barely see w/o my glasses). A man with a strong foreign accent ahead of us proclaimed, "I have traveled all over the world, I've been in a sandstorm over Saudi Arabi, but this is the WORST flight I've ever been on." THAT was my FIRST flying experience!!!

We later found out that it was a TRAINING flight for the stews and it was one of the trainee's who made the "Crash Position" announcement. I didn't see the wheel go flat (and the plane tilting) being effectively blind (before Lasik I couldn't see the big E on the eye chart!) and my wife didn't tell me about that until weeks later because I had to fly again (on business) the next week. When we first started to deplane a woman passenger couldn't find her husband and was told he was throwing up in the plane's lavatory (I wonder if he was still in it when the tire blew and the plane tilted, lol.) Anyways, as you might expect, I really, really, really hate flying. The only worry I have for the team is flying to South America.

It was above average last season over all and until Tom went down vs the 49er's very good the last 3rd of the season. Predicting how it will be this season you need to factor in losing Runyan (terrific late round pick and solid starter) and Nijam an experienced starter at both tackle positions making him an ideal swing tackle. Both of those loses need to be addressed by players on the roster now or acquisitions if the need shows early.

You want to win them all, 17-0. You especially want to win the opener. And the Eagles are a pretty good team who should make the playoffs this year. So, a win in Brazil is big......a road win over a playoff team in our conference.

A loss is just a loss. If we just win our home games, all we need to do is break through a couple of times on the road. I'd rather lose to Philly than lose to Indianapolis the next week.

But, I'd rather win them both, and I think we can. Philadelphia has an offense, but they gave up a lot of points last year. They're bad on 3rd down and they're bad in the redzone.. 9 teams scored 27 or more against them, and when the Packers reach 27, they're just about bulletproof. What have they done to improve that? Not enough, IMO.

This game in Brazil should be a clash between a very good offense against a poor defense. On the other side, the Eagles will bring a very good offense against a defense that should be better than average. I think the Packers will have 10 or 11 possessions, and if we have 4 TD drives we'll win this easily.

The biggest concern should be the defense. We haven't wonon opening day the last few years and have been blown out in a couple of them. Those scores were major embarassments, shockers in fact, that 38 to 3 one really bites. Barry had a bad scheme but it was the players who played and most of them are still on the team. I'm just hoping we don't get blown out, the last few years have been brutal. If we get a lead and keep the lead maybe the tide for the defense has turned. For a young team of players, most of whom have probably never left the country it would be a true test of their preparation and focus if they win. GPG
