Cory's Corner: Keep These Guys Together

It all started with Marcus Peters. Then went Jalen Ramsey, Mohamed Sanu and Emmanuel Sanders.
Hopefully you're keeping up, because NFL trades have been going faster than my son's Oreo ice cream birthday cake.
Ever since Sanu and Sanders were dealt to the Patriots and 49ers, many Packers fans have been asking in unison, "Who will we get?"
I have a simple answer: they don't need to trade for anyone. This team is hitting its stride right now as 1265 Lombardi Avenue has become the intersection of success and fun. That hasn't happened in quite some time and I don't think now would be a good time to dabble with the ingredients.
Are the Packers thin at wide receiver? Sure. However, Davante Adams' turf toe has been a veiled blessing. In the last three games without Adams, Aaron Rodgers has thrown to nine different receivers twice and eight different receivers once. This offense is turning into a chameleon, which is exactly what you want. It can beat you with Aaron Jones' four touchdowns one week, then with Rodgers' perfect passer rating the next.
And the defense got this whole thing started in Chicago as it took a little time for the offense to get going.
I realize that everyone wants the shiny new toy, especially the one that you know you cannot have. So let's say the Packers trade for Robby Anderson. Whose snaps does he poach and what happens when Adams comes back?
These are questions that must be answered before a new personality is forced upon the locker room.
The Packers are in a great spot right now. Going to Kansas City to face backup Matt Moore, going to Los Angeles to take on a banged up -- physically and mentally -- Chargers team before hosting the Panthers before the bye.
And if you still think the Packers are missing out by not doing anything before the Oct. 29 trade deadline, think back to the offseason. Remember when general manager Brian Gutekunst gutted the defense and added Preston Smith, Za'Darius Smith and Adrian Amos? Nobody, not even defensive coordinator Mike Pettine thought that was going to happen.
Yet, here the Packers sit at 6-1, one of the best records in the NFC with a clear roadmap to home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Would a trade be interesting? Yeah, it would. But the Packers are having fun right now. Sit back and let them have their fun for awhile.

Three weeks ago I'd completely disagreed with standing pat and to be honest I'm still not 100% sold on the WR group less Davante Adams. The Packers haven't exactly played the top tier of pass defense teams like the 49ers (1st), Patriots (2nd), or Bills (4th) for example who all have been playing excellent pass defense. They've played the Cowboys (9th), Lions (30th), and Raiders (31st) in pass defense.
BUT since Saunders and to a lesser degree Sanu my wish list at WR has dried up for the most part. AJ Green would be interesting but the salary that comes with him is too much and he's been injured more than healthy the last few years.
BUT #2...If the Packers could somehow get an O.J. Howard for example for no more than a 3rd in next year's draft I say HELL YES! IMO Howard would be a great addition to the Packers. He can catch, run, block, AND all those traits come in ONE package!
BUT #3...Or a run-stuffing DYT might be the smartest move Gute could make and let the Packers just role with who they have offensively. Sternberger is coming back and he could help. The kid can catch, run, and the blocking part will come. Even if it's difficult to make a contribution at the position as a rookie he has the talent to makes a play here and there and help the Packers continue winning.

I have 1 issue with all that, That Patriots defense ESPN has been raving about have played The Dolphins, Giants, Redskins, Bills, & Jets twice

You're correct... One great game by AR has not proven the WR group to be complete.. I'm still not convinced... But I agree.... I don't have a clue on another vet WR to add to the 53.... OJ Howard (TE) would be a coup but also costly.-- Someone to help Clark would be nice.

Am I supposed to be concerned that Robbie Anderson might deprive Kumerow and/or Lazard of snaps? I don't think so.
Love to have a big Ole DT, or anyone better than Goodson. He's just barely better than Morrison, who is out of the league. I wouldn't say no to a CB or a TE like Howard.
Due to the cap, GB's interest is probably limited to players who are still on rookie deals.

Just get Sternberger involved in the passing game. He can pound plate and figure out blocking next off-season.

I believe you win in the trenches. Give me Leonard Williams. He was a all-pro in 2016. While everyone was concerned with the offense. The obvious was the DL. The depth just couldn't make up for the loss of Adams, and Clark, getting sidelined. Rodgers will move this offense. With the packers in it to win it. Several Bargains like Williams would be a a treat.

I think it’s hard to make the argument that our depth couldn’t make up for Adams and Clark when we’re 6-1.

I don't think another WR is needed either. Adams being out has gotten other guys into the mix and appears these guys can play. I like the balance of the offense not always looking to throw to one guy. Their OL is tremendous, definitely performing at very high level. The combination of pressure and strong play by the secondary has the defense no longer being a liability. This is a well coached, solid team with #12....everything seems to be falling into place.

Sorry Cory, I disagree! Don't stand pat, stand Pats.
I too was all in on a receiver a few weeks ago, but after watching the young guys step up and defense give up yard after yard (against both the run and the pass) the past few weeks I've changed directions.
So, like NickPerry's #3 above, I'd like to see the Pack add something to the middle of the defense, be that a run stuffing DT or a thumper ILB to help Martinez.
Vic Beasley comes to mind, the Falcons are shopping him, and he could use a change of scenery.
Z. Smith has shown he can play with one hand on the ground as a situational DE, and Beasley's been playing (out-of-position) as a LB in Atlanta. Adding more pass rush couldn't be a bad thing and Beasley might be a cheap rental, he's a FA at year's end, but I don't see much else out there.
Adding to a good team is how to jump the hump, the Pats have proven it nearly every year, and the Packers are a good team. One more good piece could lead to great things.

Trade Martinez for a defensive tackle and cut Lancaster then start Burks and Goodson. I think this would make the defense much better. Martinez makes most of his tackles after a 4 yard gain and is not good in coverage. I don’t think they are planning on bringing him back next year anyways. Goodson is very physical and Burks can cover.

"Martinez makes most of his tackles after a 4 yard gain."
Just out of curiosity, how did you (or could you) possibly know this.... You must have some kind of "magical TV" to be so specific about how a player plays..... or could it simply be a very overly creative imagination on your part?

I’m just watching the games and that’s what I see. We are giving up over 5 yards per carry and some of that is on Martinez but definitely not all. I would like to see him make more impact plays at the line of scrimmage.

Travis....tackles ARE impact plays. Without tackles, every play is a TD. And maybe you should chart Martinez a few games so you could check your “4 yards downfield “ claim. I’ve done it already but I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise for you.
A question you might want to ask yourself is why nobody made the tackle before Martinez?

Travis,
I couldn't disagree more!
Martinez is playing great, and leading the team in tackles, AGAIN!
What he is suffering from is CMIII disease, which is no one good enough along side him to draw any attention, the same thing Matthews lacked the past few years. And yet, Martinez continues to make plays.
Granted, CMII had dropped off some, but look at his production in a good defense in LA. Martinez has NOT dropped off and IMO continues to get better. If they were to trade him they had better get something really outstanding, because Martinez is just that!

I mostly agree with Cory. One move I would like to see is trading for the best young backup D lineman with promising upside Gutey can find...somewhat similar to what he did in getting the Smith brothers.
M. Adams and Lancaster have done next to nothing this year and to address their greatest weakness, stopping the run, the Pack needs better players in the rotation.

I don’t have the time or knowledge to rate players effectiveness but PFF who rates every play a player makes has Lancaster rated as a above average similar to Clark’s rating right now.

What this article fails to take into consideration is cap ramifications. The Packers only have 9.5 mil cap space and have a lot of really good players to sign and extend in 2019 and then again in 2020. Save your $$$ to keep what you have that's working.

I would like to see the addition of a big body for the D line. That should not disrupt the chemistry much.

Gute & MLF have boldly gotten GB to a 6-1 record at this point.... Many changes were made in the 53-man roster along the way. --- I trust them to decide if GB needs to trade for added depth or another talent before the deadline.
"everyone wants the shiny new toy".... or .... "new personality is forced upon the locker room" .... or .... "Packers are having fun right now" have little to do with improving a roster. ---- They're just a bunch of overused cliches that I doubt the Packer hierarchy & players are using at this time. --- We're still only 7 games into the season. (we may have 12 or even 13 games to go)

If this team wanted to trade for somebody it would have already done so. It’s too late now. We picked up a fifth rounder for Davis. So I think that that this team is already thinking about next year. As others have mentioned, there will be a daunting salary cap struggle next year and I expect that we will lose a starter or two from this years team. We don’t need a big cap hit this year or inherit another one from a trade that will carry over to next year.

Not disagreeing with you on bringing in a good defensive lineman but kinda think if Wilkerson had anything left in the tank he would have been picked up by now by someone.

there was never a time when a WR was needed…...…
Spread the ball around, we have more talent on O than most teams. And I said it all the time, its a good thing to force AR to get over his trust stuff and throw it out fast.
MVS is a big play wideout, EQB can be some day and Adams is top 5 of the planet. some other guys have upside too.
Hell, how can you not see that is beyond me. If AR is off, it does not matter who is running the routes and if he is AR, he has more options to chose from than he needs. If we keep playing with only one football....

I too agree that maybe the turf toe thing was a blessing in that it did force the Coaches to come up with a plan b and to learn, Adams wasnt the only receiver in town. Others when given the ops they werent getting with Adams healthy not only stepped up but put up by showing.... hey we can catch footballs too.
Rodgers may have learned the biggest lesson in all this. He was a one trick pony with Adams playing.
