Cory's Corner: Preston Smith Is The Boring Ironman

The 31-year-old has failed to start only three games since 2016.

My uncle used to say that two-thirds of life is just showing up.

When I say Ironman, what do you think of? Cal Ripken, Brett Favre or Robert Downey Jr. perhaps?
Those are all solid answers, but if you want to know the solution that wears green and gold, it’s Preston Smith. You probably read that and said, “You’re crazy Cory. Are you drinking expired milk again?”

Luckily, I am not.

The last time Smith has not started a game was in 2020. If you go all the way back to 2016, his sophomore season as a pro, he only failed to start three games.

Think about that for a second. That’s amazing. Smith is 31. He plays linebacker and is constantly smashing his body all over the place. He played 730 snaps last year, which was more than the 688 he logged in 2021.

But there’s a lot more to the Packers defensive player that plays a lot. He also does it really well. He earned his best tackling grade from Pro Football Focus in five years and last year he tallied his best rushing defense grade in his nine-year career.

I was intrigued when the Packers brought Smith aboard with a four-year, $52 million deal in 2019. But I wasn’t too keen on a four-year $52.5 million extension that was signed in 2022. But he has continued to prove his worth. He has been first or second on the Packers in sacks and quarterback hits in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

And despite all of his solid play and amazing consistency, he still opted for a contract restructure that would save the Packers $2.4 million in cap space in 2024. Saving cap space shouldn’t exactly be his top priority since he has a finite amount of time left as a professional football player.

But that’s just who Smith is. He is the guy that will do whatever it takes to win, putting his body on the line each and every week and then he will double down and agree to a contract restructure.

I think that’s utterly amazing. There were numerous times when people were willing to give Smith a pass for his age, but he kept returning it time after time. When Za’Darius Smith went elsewhere, that was the time when I thought that Preston Smith would likely see a dip in production.

The opposite happened. He actually got better.

Ironman isn’t running laps around Camden Yards or dying at the hands of Thanos. He is producing at a high level for the Packers by starting every game.

That may sound boring. But boring wins.

"Ironman" I agree with, but I suspect Preston might take umbrage with being called "boring". Smith has had many exciting plays for GB and hopefully he'll adjust to the new scheme (several here have said he played with his "hand in the dirt" in college) easily. I suspect he will.

By "boring", I interpret Cory's use of the adjective for Preston as not needing to be the center of attention...making "news" off the field...or voicing "opinions" not related to football.

Get a team of 53 Preston Smiths and you will win football games...a lot of football games. Boring? Off the field, yes indeed. A leader by example in the locker room and on the field? You bet!

Preston is one of my favorite Packers of all time.

The most important ability is availability.

Feel free to use that at any time.

Can't imagine how hard it is to play that position continuously while you're banged up. I sucked in my breath when he hurt his ankle last season. Then he came right back out there. Amazing.

This will be P. Smiths last year for the Packers.
He's 31 and going through another coaching change.
They just cannot afford Clark and P. Smith.
The door will keep revolving.

If Smith stays healthy and plays average or better then he will be on the team in 2025 because the Packers have about 60 mil in cap space and PS will have a dead money of almost 10 mil if he is released and a cap savings of 7.5 mil. He will probably be released in 2026 because it is reversed at 5.5 mil and 12.5 mil.

Plus if he is playing well and he stays healthy why not keep him one more year.

Packers picked up his roster bonus this spring. After that, his contract is mostly cash and prorated bonuses--it's all pretty manageable if they want him to stick past 2024. Smith has usually been amenable to massaging his contract.

Preston seems to love his job...playing for the Packers. And the Packers see his value as a team leader and his consistently good performance doing his job.

A player with less leadership ability would easier to say goodby to. Not Preston Smith.

What the hell is the point of that comment? Dehumanize, and throw a packer out like he's disposable trash? Why not just tip your hat to P Smith for what he has done so far.....and likely to do until time takes it toll. Just honor that for a bit, eh?

The fact that Smith is still here and is the only 30+ year old on the roster says a lot about Preston. Clearly this team is about having young players. They have 1 30+ year old on the team, and 3 29 year olds. The rest are 28 or younger.
Preston has been a warrior. He has had 8 or more sacks in each of the last 3 years.

Smith is one of my favorite Packers at this stage--shows up each week and makes plays, locker room leader, doesn't make waves in the media, family guy, good community guy.

He has plenty of detractors--he's more of the Robin to a lead rusher's Batman, and his production struggled when Z and Gary were hurt. Others point to his coverage of WR in space, but that's more a function of scheme. P moves in space better than most of the DE/OLB on this roster and most teams have sets where they ask a DL to drop into coverage periodically. Most OCs are trying like crazy to manipulate a defense into those kinds of mis-matches where they've got speed on a big dude like that.

I think he knows the writing is on the wall with regard to his time left in the league. He's always been amenable to adjusting his contract, sometimes as flat out pay cuts and others as converting cash value to incentives (sorry for the APC link):

https://www.acmepackingcompany.com/2024/2/28/24086016/green-bay-packers-...

He's a team guy and I think he finishes his career in GB. I'll be sad when he's gone.

I agree about him being a favorite. He has been just that consistent performer week in and week out.
"Others point to his coverage of WR in space"
I just hope Hafley knows what he has in CB1 Smith.

I don't know how much longer Smith will play in the league. I am guessing 3-4 years at most. More likely 2-3 more years. I would be happy with him to stay in GB.

The thing about P Smith is that most of the sexy defensive stats would never happen if it weren't for his contributions, even when those stats don't wind up credited to him. He's more than just an ironman in terms of availability, he's disruptive to the opposing offense. Not taking anything away from Kenny Clarke and Rashan Gary, but Preston has been essential to this defense, consistently.

Here's hoping that the list of Packers who flourish under the new defensive scheme is a LOT longer! Is there anyone on the roster that gives us reason to think they won't?

GPG!!

If Prestons leaves in 2026, will the vikings pick him up? I would not doubt it.

When I was a kid I rode my bike up to the music store on a very hot summer Sunday. It's about 11am. I see a blue Strat plugged into an amp on the rack. Had always wanted to play an electric guitar, and finally, this was my day. I started ripping into Iron Man, repeating that riff, over & over, & over.... it was like a dream.

After a good while I sensed someone behind me and to my left. I looked up, and it was the owner, turning all shades of rage red, looking down at me, glowering.

He said, "GET OUT."

Why would he leave a Stratocaster plugged in and not expect someone to play it? Especially when a young Jimmie Hendricks walks in?

Shop owner's an idiot. Encourage the kid, send him home to pester his parents until they give in and buy it.

Maybe he had accidently left his own instrument set up and was really finicky about people touching it?

There's a Sabbath show on YouTube from Paris in 1970 that's pretty interesting. War Pigs had different lyrics and had a working title of Walpurgis. Bill Ward beats the drums like they owe him money.

The album was originally supposed to be called War Pigs but the record company decided they'd catch too much flack for it so they changed the name without changing the cover or informing the band. They were pretty shocked when they saw it in stores.

I gotta see those lyrics now.

The best war protest song ever written is still War Pigs, every bit as relevant today as when it was written. (Weak spot: masses rhymes with masses. Really? I always wondered how hard they tried to improve that line)

ETA: best performance of that song I've ever heard :)

There was a Christmas parody that substituted Santa Claus for Iron Man. The only line I remember was:

Give him cookies and beer
He'll visit your house 1st next year.

Oh, YESSSSS, LLCHESTY!!!!

"I AM SANTA CLAUS!!!"

Flying through the snow
Can you hear him ho ho ho
Always full of cheer
Only works one day a year!

Just when you thought you couldn't like Christmas more... or, when you thought you hated Christmas... LOL.

I always look forward to hitting that one and Cheech & Chong's "Santa Claus and His Old Lady." Both are stellar.
