Is Devonte Wyatt Packers’ Des Bishop of 2022?

Sometimes, injury forces a better player off the bench

Packers first-round pick Devonte Wyatt played more in Miami when fellow defensive lineman Dean Lowry got hurt—and made an impact that directly led to victory.

It was reminiscent of the 2010 season, when veteran linebacker Nick Barnett went down and backup Desmond Bishop—who was bigger, faster, stronger, had better instincts than Barnett and didn't do a ridiculous celebration for making a simple tackle—came in and made plays that solidified the defense and won the Super Bowl. In fact, Bishop recovered a fumble in the Super Bowl that turned the game in the Packers’ favor.

On the first drive in Miami, Lowry started:

  • First play, Lowry got double-teamed and Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert ran for 13 yards.
  • On another play, Lowry was wired to a block—the Dolphin blocker got under his pads, and Mostert ran for 17 yards. Lowry is solid and generally has been where the coaches asked. Unfortunately, on those plays Miami blockers made Lowry look like a dancing panda.

Clearly, the Packers need to do better, and Wyatt did just that. That same first Dolphins drive, Wyatt came in, immediately got push into quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s face, forcing an incompletion and a field goal.

It’s an American pastime to second-guess our favorite teams’ coaches and, with their jobs on the line, one can hardly blame them for going with a veteran they can trust.

The coaches are like, "ain't I a reliable coach making sound decisions?!"

But playing Barnett and Lowry ahead of better players is like dancing into a mine shaft a la Yosemite Sam.

Lowry sometimes played “half the blocker” well, but couldn’t get off the block or make one-armed tackles against Miami.

In stark contrast, Wyatt showed violent, active, strong hands and speed to run sideline to sideline—shades of Gilbert Brown in 1996 at his peak. He hustles, and it matters. With about 2:35 left in the second half, Wyatt made perhaps his best play of the year. He fought off a double team, pressured the quarterback into throwing a release to tight end Durham Smythe; but that wasn’t all—Wyatt then pivoted and ran down Smythe from behind to prevent a first down.

Whether it was out of respect or just luck of the draw, Wyatt drew several double teams from Miami, freeing Kenny Clark and Preston Smith to go one-on-one and win quickly.

On the play when the defensive line was Clark, Jarran Reed, and Wyatt, Reed beat his man, caused a fumble, and recovered it. While Wyatt didn't make the play, it did show what the trio could accomplish if put on the field together.

Need more proof? How about 3:20 to go in the third quarter, when Wyatt pushed past his man with a swim move, ripped underneath him with his inner arm, flushed the quarterback and forced an incompletion. The next play, he flushed Tua like he was running from a lion to the right, forcing the throw incomplete—and the Dolphins missed the field goal. Two plays, no points, forced by Wyatt.

This is not to say he’s a finished product. He occasionally turns and knives into the pocket with one shoulder, and this can make him susceptible to illegal blocks in the back. In the red zone, along the goal line, he took on the tackle and was victimized by a “wham” block from the tight end, allowing the touchdown by running back Jeff Wilson. That’ll happen to a young player, and he’ll learn from that tape to recognize and anticipate those.

Perhaps the ultimate play was the Packers’ defense’s last, when Wyatt drew two blockers, freeing Clark to beat his man like Neil Peart, forcing a fast throw by Tua right to cornerback Rasul Douglas, who had baited the throw: Interception, game over.

Packers fans can forgive the coaches for playing Ol Reliable Lowry to this point. Former Packers GM Ron Wolf probably would have demanded his talented draft pick play more by now. But that appears, at least from the outside, to not be current GM Brian Gutekunst’s style.

Nevertheless, Gutey and Packers fans would have every right to expect the coaches to play Wyatt plenty from here out.

Some might remember Bishop's pick 6 of Vikings quarterback Brett Favre at Lambeau. Now Wyatt could similarly spoil the Vikings’ new year.

My guess is that Wyatt just needed some time to get used to the NFL. Now he looks like the plug-and-play guy the Packers drafted.

"Packers fans can forgive the coaches for playing Ol Reliable Lowry to this point." Why? It has been evident for quite a few weeks now that Lowry should not be starting out there when we have a guy like Wyatt. All Lowry does consistently is be bad against the run. He should be ONLY used as a 4-tech, not when there are just 2 DL on the field. Guys like Reed, Clark, or Wyatt are better suited to such positions.

I would also like to see more of Jonathan "The Ford" Ford. I want to see what he can do against the run. It'd be nice if he were sprinkled into the DL rotation. Chris Slayton on the PS is another guy they could explore.

I wonder what the recent signing of WR Bo Melton (who also has returning experience) means in regard to Watson's and Nixon's injuries? Hopefully they're both good to go against Minny on Sunday

The problem seems to lie with LeFleur and the coaches and it has had a significant impact on the season so far. The coaches just do not seem to have an eye for talent, or just too afraid to put in younger players (exception seems to be the OL & of course they started playing Quay right away). To be fair....last year they did insert Newsome and Stokes right away.

I have liked Wyatt immensely pre-draft and have absolutely been shocked with the pitiful DL that he has not been playing more. His talent is so obvious. Sometimes it may take a player awhile to remember all the plays and know exactly where he should be but when a players talent is so obvious the best way for them to learn is on the field. A good example is Quay, Watson, Doubs, etc. I know personally my learning style is best when I am hands on vs chalkboard & computers.

-Case in point....why did Nixon not play ahead of Amari?
-Why did it take so long to take Savage out of the starting lineup?
-Why did it take so long to replace Newman on the OL?
-Why didn't Doubs, Watson, and Toure get more playing time from the get go over washed up Watkins & Cobb. Most everyone knew prior to the season this was a losing combination. I said before the season Cobb still has value but play him sparingly in key situations, so he isn't over used as he is injury prone.
-Then of course there is the whole Jordan Love situation. He will see very little playing time this year and next year when the games count the Packers will suffer for it until he gets more playing experience.

I don't know for sure but wonder if the coaches lack of vision 'may' have played a role with the running back Hill. I liked him and thought he was very talented. Otherwise, maybe it was something totally unrelated.

Melton was in some of our mocks as a returner from rd 6-7. Looks like he will be the guy on Sunday.

This is my complaint with MLF. He played Royce Newman and Jake Hanson, while Zach Tom and Nijman sat on the bench. Finally, after way too long, even MLF figured out that Newman and Hanson were really lousy. Even an idiot like me figured out last year that Newman wasn't a player, and I could see in preseason that Zach Tom was ready and better. MLF did the same thing with Amari. How many fumbles and poor decisions and lost games did it take for MLF to finally figure out Amari wasn't a return man? We've got the very mediocre Lowry playing, along with some other mediocre DL's, while Wyatt sits on the bench. It's puzzling.

He’s too involved interpersonally. A good leader can be human but he has to be able to detach and compartmentalize. LaFleur very clearly can’t do that for individuals in the team or his coaching staff. It’s a fatal flaw.

Db,
and what happened in the NFC Championship game last year with our lineup with OL?

The Packers have a real problem with MLF as he lacks vision. His lack of vision and loyalty to some of the veterans is a win/loss killer.

Where is this assumption about the forgiving nature of Packers fans coming from? Also, this is the second article in as many days with a comparison to the 2010 team--I don't think so.

Gee, what a surprise: our first round draft pick, who's shown progress in his ridiculously limited snaps, is fulfilling his promise in more extended action. It's a shame that it takes either an injury or grossly subpar play from veterans for the FO/coaching staff to seek alternative solutions (that also includes Nixon,Ford, and to a lesser degree, Tom). I wonder if they're just trying to get their money's worth or self-justification out of certain veterans--or they're just being stubborn and refusing to deviate from their preseason plans.

The more of Wyatt I see, the more I like him--especially his hustle.

This notion of acting slowly this year has happened way too much. Whether not running enough, Or waiting to switch to Nixon. Or use Ford instead of Savage. Or moving Jenkins. Or benching Newman. Or not firing Barry. Or now, waiting to use Wyatt. How bad did it get in numerous games where the Pack get gashed in the running game. Wyatt should have had many chances to play when the Packers couldn't stop the run. How many times did LaFluer admit they should have done something different or sooner.

And last year as well with MLF not firing Drayton until after the season was over. We all saw how bad the ST were and yet no changes were made during the season. Are we seeing a common theme here?

I remember this play, even rewound the DVR to watch a few more times after it happened. ANYTIME a man of Wyatts size hustles downfield. All I could think of was WHY in the hell Wyatt wasn't playing more. Just another WTF moment by the Packers coaching staff. Don't know if that's on Montgomery or Barry, but that shit has GOT to stop.

When you look at the big picture it is more than a Barry or Montgomery problem. You can look over the past 4-years with LF and it happens multiple times each year whether with a talented player sitting on the bench, or with a coach who is over his head and LF doesn't do anything. The problem is with Matt LF!

The problem is, with 2 games to go, there are still players that should be getting more snaps. Wyatt was not the last.

I think they got stuck on "draft and develop" when they hit on Gary and had the Smith Bros ahead of him. Can't see the forest for the trees!

Wyatt's play style was obvious from his Georgia tape. he can go 3-6 tech and stunt on the move. He reminded me of Sapp moving around just not as quick. You know Montgomery wanted him on the playing field.

Yep, and I'm adding Tyler Davis to the list of players who should not be playing. His block on Jones' run was great but he got away with illegal motion. Dafney was better and they released him. I wonder sometimes if the lack of contact in practices make it hard for the coaches to evaluate talent. IDK, like someone said above--it's weird.

How long did we have to watch Amari Rodgers before they put in Nixon? I don’t get why this team refuses to replace subpar player unless there is an injury.

E,
The definition of stupidity is when something doesn't work and you continually do the same thing over and over. Over the course of the season when the team was in the early stages of losing 5 games in a row.......duh.....wouldn't you think it was time to switch things up and try something different whether on offense, defense, or special teams?

Before we anoint Wyatt as the next great defensive lineman lets see what he can do over the next couple of games.

Lowry has been a team favorite but the fans didn't like his play for some reason. Now that he's out Wyatt can prove he deserved to be picked that high.

I like Dean as a journeyman lineman. He does have a nice bull rush and I have seen him bat some balls. But that’s about it. He has reached his ceiling. I like him as a Packer but only as a rotational player. He is a tad expensive for that role.

One of the main arguments for giving Rodgers the largest QB contract in the league, was that the team, having seen Love in all sorts of situations, had decided he was not ready to be a starter. This was the team's evaluation of Love's ability. But this season, in particular, has shown repeatedly that the evaluation of players by the Packers is often wrong. The debacle on the OL that wasn't fixed for weeks. The team repeatedly sending out Amari Rodgers to field kicks. Now, we are finally getting to see the rookies get a chance to show what they can do, but only after lesser players were, unfortunately, injured. The question now becomes, are they properly evaluating Love's ability? Can they truly be trusted to make the best decisions? Recent history would suggest, no.
