Gut Reactions: Packers get back in the win column

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers win over the Rams

  • A W at Lambeau. You love to see it.
  • Running the ball. A concept.
  • Those refs def had pigeon shit in their eyes on those offensive offsides calls.
  • Sean Rhyan finally sees the field, plays well, gets benched. It's the Packers way.
  • Still some frustrating moments but for a guy who has come under a lot of scrutiny, I thought Josh Myers played well.
  • Love has to get Watson a better ball on that first deep shot that he underthrew. Great to see them connect later and absolutely fantastic to see Watson go up and make a contested catch.
  • Carrington Valentine came to play.
  • That Wicks fumble is one of the flukiest plays I've ever seen.
  • Loved Aaron Jones going right up to him in support after that happened. Not such a big fan of Jones own fumble but maybe he was just trying to show the rookie that anyone can fumble.
  • Good to see Nixon bust a good return. Been due for one.
  • LaFleur was in his bag with that play design on the TD to Musgrave. Love said after the game that they put that in this week. Just fantastic.
  • Isaiah McDuffie was everywhere. Really nice job stepping in for Quay Walker.
  • The Packers won. You can't tell me nothin'
  • Go Pack Go

As the only proven playmaker for the Packers, Aaron Jones is our only reliable difference maker in terms of winning games.
It seems he was the difference maker in two of our three wins -- today against the Rams and in the season opener against the Bears -- and that if he was healthier in the other games, the team may have one or two more wins overall.
So, it seems to me, Jones is the key to the team making a run at a playoff spot this season, which has to be the goal. The Green Bay Packers don't do quitting.
We need a lot of guys to step up going forward this season, but Jones is the key.
In the meantime, I'm so glad for the win today!

Since the dawn to time, the Green Bay Packers have made opposing back-up quarterbacks look like HOFers. Today they did not and that is praiseworthy. Don't wanna hear any of your "IF STAFFORD WOULD HAVE PLAYED" bologna. Yeah, well, if my aunt had balls she's be my uncle.

I liked the intensity given the loss of Rasul this week. These are young guys, and they responded with a solid effort.

Sweet baby Jebus, we can be a sloppy team and shoot ourselves in the foot to spite our face while throwing the baby out with the bathwater at precisely the wrong time.

The 2023 Green Bay Packers are undefeated in the month of November.

Take the W, but keep the ax sharp.

"Since the dawn to time, the Green Bay Packers have made opposing back-up quarterbacks look like HOFers" -- so true and your comment did actually make me laugh out loud.

Agree with the rest of your post too, lets give the team some props for winning a winnable game but that first half was UGLY to watch.
Thankfully there was some entertainment value to be found in the second half.

no such thing as a meaningless game to the players...they all know their jobs and salaries are on the line with every performance. you have never played in organized sports if you really believe what your spewing.. improvement builds confidence and this goes for both teams

It's meaningless in the sense that beating a bad team with a really bad backup QB does nothing to help evaluate Love's and the team's performance moving forward so they could make decisions for next year. Wasn't that what this season was supposed to be all about?

We don't know any more about this team in week 8 than we did in week 1. So yeah, meaningless.

My outlook on life is just fine. And I certainly don't need to act like a tough guy on the internet like well....you, to get a point across.

If you, or anyone else can't handle realistic criticism of how this year has regressed, that's your problem, not mine. I'll say it again....beating a bad team with their really bad backup QB does nothing to help evaluate this team moving forward. Playing good for one quarter of every game doesn't either.

If you've been watching these games, perhaps it's you with the optic problems.

We get to feel better about our team for a week.

The youngsters on D acquitted themselves well this game. It was nice to see Love have a steadier game, and I've not yet seen signs of him being rattled, which bodes well for his development.

The Packers TE's couldn't block a sneeze, and I was convinced Musgrave was going to stumble on his way to the end zone. He needs some time with a jump rope to get those heavy-ass feet of his lightened up.

A sloppy game and the Packers defense actually rose to the occasion and dominated an offense they needed to dominate. It was fun to see them play downhill and with energy...but there aren't going to be many softballs like that one this season.

Some head-scratcher moments for the offense and Love, but enough to win.

Savor it. One game at a time.

I waited all game for the loss to come. As bad as the Rams Offense was, they sure did a great job of letting them hang around, until the Rams fell off the hanger.

Lots of false positives that will be ignored for a week.

I cannot understand how some teams decide on their backup QBs, it can't be just to save money.

How can we still support Love, when you see the play of Stroud, Levis, Dobbs, Heineke , Howell, etc.

A win is a win, just don't expect many, if any, over the next 4–5 weeks.

I had the game on the smallest of spaces on my computer, even this win won't move it to a bigger space next week.

Still depressing, sorry, but let's be real.

You have to give MLF credit for sticking with the run. Do what works. Agree that Myers and the IOL played quite well.

We did see a little more progress from the passing game. Finally (!) a couple of big plays of the vertical nature by Musgrave, including a fine catch for 25 yards. Watson even had a big play, although maybe it could have been two if Love hadn't underthrown him by a good bit the first time.

The secondary played lights out. Holding Kupp and Nacua to just 5 total receptions was impressive. Need to come up with an alternate celebration, though, as the one they do looks kind of silly.

Wicks: Why was he stretching, anyway? It was first down. One of those unforced errors that needs not to repeat itself.

Obviously not a momentous win given the status of the opponent, but give the Packers credit for closing this one out on offense and defense.

Love obviously really needs to work on that deep ball;. Actually, anything much over 20 yards. I mean, there's inaccurate and then there this. On that pass to Watson I knew that was a duck the second it left his hand. He's so UNSURE of touch. When to put air under it, (not there) and more of a drive the ball type throw.

Hopefully he really, REALLY works on that in the Summer. He's from Cali... Invite the boys down there. Bring down Watson, Doubs, Reed, Wicks, Musgrave, and Kraft and get to KNOW them. Hopefully while getting to know them you improve...A LOT!

Glad for W hard to watch. So many drive killing penalties, many missed passes that seem so makable, glad we found a team that’s struggling too. If they want to be able to beat a team one more rung up the ladder they first have to stop the self inflicted nonsense. Hard to find 5 teams worse than the Pack. Still hopeful not optimistic.

A win ALWAYS feels better than a loss. As painful as it was to watch that offense in the first half, it was good to see MLF actually KEEP running the ball with Aaron Jones.

Why again was Rhyan pulled and Runyan put back in? I don't know if it's Butkus or Steno (Probably Butkus) but Jesus Christ LET the kid play and see what you got. I mean you REALLY don't plan on resigning Runyan do you?

Will Christian Watson EVER not get hurt catching a pass?

The Rams are a REALLY bad football team and that was a pathetic showing from the LA offense. But Karl Brooks will continue to show in the league and I really am starting to like McDuffie.

The coverage by Alexander on the 30 something yard completion to Cooper Kupp on 3rd down at the start of the 2nd half was as bad as I've seen.

GOOD for Jordon Love!

Better coached game and they brought fire all game on defense. The kicking was so so but a score is a score when you’re still trying to get yourself tuned in. Should have run it more and never from the shotgun. So many timing issues on offense. That comes with attention and experience. Barry sort of got out of his own way. Alexander was a firecracker today. Watson had some good blocks and one helped Jones on his touchdown run. One game at a time.

The defense played some inspired football today—great to see.
Watson—(Stokes) , will they ever remain healthy.

The Packers D played well against a bad team. The Packers O played bad against a bad team. After 8 games J Love has proven he isn't a NFL caliber starter. Inaccurate deep ball all season, holds the ball to long, missing wide open receivers and making his receivers make tough catches when he does complete a pass. The offensive is terrible. 3 out of the 5 need to be replaced. Congratulations to Murphy and Gutekunst, you have assembled the worst combination of coaches and players we have seen since the 70's

while i'll agree love hasn't looked good throwing the ball, you have to consider that when you have all of your receivers being so young there is a problem when lining up with a play that they are not all going to be reading the defense the same way and if that happens a lot, which it appears it is, love is not going to have the confidence to throw it to them when they're already not where they're supposed to be. confidence is what's missing here and time and playing together is all that will fix it.

- I liked the enthusiasm.
- I disagree about the Wicks fumble being a fluke. It seems pretty common when a player reaches out like that while holding the ball with one hand and the ball hits the ground. Generally, it's done near goal line and if you reach over goal line and fumble, it's still a TD.
- Turnovers
- Two games now with missed FGs. I forget why it didn't matter last week, penalty or something.
- Penalties still ended multiple drives
- The only reason the above penalties did not matter is because of the ineptitude of rams
- Really liked watching the defensive enthusiasm
- Jones always seems to get hit hard
- Dillon needs to pick left or right of center and embrace the battering ram on that 3rd and short

Agree—The Wicks fumble was not a fluke. Routine play stretching for additional yards. But hang on.

Just to be real-they played a bad team with a back-up QB.
It is not sustainable to rely so much on Aaron Jones-he is older, small and has not been available for 1/2 the games.

So after today's "blowout" is JordanLove back in the MVP consideration discussions? I mean did he cement the lock as MVP?

He overthrows; underthrows; late with throws, seldom steps up in the pocket; receivers appear to have to make catches near the ground; and misses wheel routes to RB’s.
I do give him some credit—He was 20 for 26—and the O-Line—tuff to trust their pass blocking.
Maybe Love gets better…?

OR, if you don't see that Love has NFL talent, you don't know how to gauge QB talent.

Go watch any of the ex-nfl QB / Coach breakdowns of Jordan love's game tape- he's not perfect, he needs to grow- but they all agree he's got a ton to like and he's got NFL talent.

I guess it might be an NFL-wide conspiracy to support Jordan Love, though. That's probably as plausible as you not knowing what you're talking about.

I " Love" that someone else sees it..
Can anyone say Levis, Stroud, Howell or even Young.. all playing better and looking better playing. Levis is " it". You can see it. Stroud is " it" you can see it. Howell is " it" you can see it. Love is not- you can see " it"

Let me remind you of how about 50% of Packers fans complained that Rodgers was a bum- literally right up until 2009/2010.

I’m not sure we really saw anything that different from the past 4 weeks today, other than that Rypien is the worst QB we’ve faced and Aaron Jones finally got the touches he deserves.

Love did look a little better. He’s still off on the deep balls though, especially to Watson. Not sure it’s ever going to improve.

Ij jones could stay healthy for more then one game he would get more touches. More shocked how bad the rams d looked. This team is in terrible shape.

Ya nothing changed at all except Jones played the whole game, the team played a horrendous team without their QB, and Love is still a below avg QB who is taking this team to now where land.
Give this win to the Rams piss poor play and give a shit attitude. They looked like they didn't really care much, they know the season is in the tank.

Good to see the Packers play decently and get a win even if it was against a team whose offense is less competent than ours.

Good defensive effort, a nice return by Nixon and finally some execution from the offensive side. Jones with 18 carries led the way proving that the Packers need to keep giving him touches.

On to Pittsburgh. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

I don't give a shit if they had a Backup QB, defense played well. Winning is tough in the NFL. We have 3 of them, I will not apologize for winning. On to Pittsburgh.

Defense has generally played well since about week 13 of the 2022 season.

There's a lot of angst about them giving up plays at the end of games, but there's also been a real issue with the defense being on the field far too long during games with the offense going 3-and-out repeatedly. It's actually been better in the 2nd half of games in 2023, but in 2022, it was brutal.

Barry takes a lot of shit from fans, the run defense is suspect, and he's obviously not any sort of all-time great d-co... but as usual, Packers fans suffer serious 'complaint lag' where issues from the past are perceived and complained about often long after they are no longer really as big of an issue. I believe the defense, overall, has been average to fairly good in 2023. If you are holding opponents to around 20 points in the NFL, your defense is holding up their end of the donkey.

Agreed. Lack of complimentary football will usually get you beat. No defense can be effective being on the field the whole game. The run game is key. Kept us ahead of the chains, extended long drives. That is how we are built to play right now

Can't judge much in a game against a bad team with a backup QB - but
I did like the throws that Love made on the receivers coming back to him.
I liked that Dillon seemed to make some good cuts rather than running ahead into traffic.
D seemed to play tighter and brought more pressue. I wish they would try that more. Are they good enough?

There were some plays that Love had LOTS of time and couldn't find anyone. They didn't show the coverage but the young receivers need to learn how to keep moving to get open. I'm pretty sure on the run the Love made towards the end near the end zone, there was a quick clip where Watson was basically standing still in the end zone.

Clark?

A big W. Fortunate to overcome their mistakes on offense. Love has a long way to go, but I hope he made some progress today. He looked sharper in the 4th quarter.

I think some of their issues is that the players are trying to hard. Confidence makes big plays, not desperation.

This was the best the defense has played. Aggressive. Tough. And Alexander looked healthy and aggressive.

That drive at the end of the first half was nicely done even if Carlson missed the kick. It could have gone even better without the penalties.

Musgrave TD: That's the first time I've really seen the young man look like how they probably have been envisioning him look since drafting him. Striding across middle, turning it up field, and bending as needed to split the defenders and find pay dirt.

Based on his reaction on the sideline, I'm hoping this is a case of a young player worrying to much about performing, and now that's he's done it, and knows he can do it, he can just kind of relax and start to come into his own.

Some winnable games coming up...one thing for sure, they probably have to play much better in the first half of these games...a very slight improvement today in the first half, although against a team with a very bad QB...the guys get to enjoy a win then on to the Steelers...a much more formidable foe....

You haven't watched the steelers over the last year or two obviously.

That being said, they have TJ Watt, and our OL is shaky at best.

But the Steelers offense is about as bad as any team in 2023.

A win, is a win! I'll take it! Positives that need to be accented:

No Drops!! (Ok maybe one, but I will take that).
Fighting for the ball and as mentioned previously, coming back for the ball.
Musgrave involved in the passing attack!! More of that please!!
Watson's blocks were key to gains a couple of times. He was so-so on a couple of others, but improving. Hope he is OK after injury
McDuffie demonstrating how an inside linebacker should shoot and fill a gap!
Aggressive DB play. Alexander looked healthier, but still stiff in the 2nd half, so I'm unsure if he is 100%.....Great to see he had 7 tackles though and demonstrated a will to mix it up more. He was very involved with passes defensed (as was Valentine).
So far, I like the play of our back-up safeties, especially the tackling....a real STICK on a TE by Anthony Johnson!
Return game was excellent today! Coverage teams played better.

Considering the improvement in the OL, I'm really wondering whether Stenavich was told to coach these guys up during the week. That is his best position, and he should return to it. The two offside penalties on fourth down, when the Packers finally executed the QB "push" play to get a first down (nullified), and when the same thing happened with Dillon going for a first, again nullified, even had the broadcast crew scratching their collective heads. It's as if the refs were looking for a reason to throw a flag.
Love also showed some improvement, as did his WR's (for the most part). But I still maintain, if you get your hands on the ball, catch it. Another week on the roller coaster. Hopefully, they can build on this, but the next few games are going to be tough. I just hope I don't get like Michael Corleone in "Godfather III".

Nice win. Can we please focus on the penalties? The neutral zone off-side calls were too close to call but because it's an area of focus, they are all too happy to throw the rag. Do better EVERYONE.

The positives, we won! Team rushed for over 100 yards. We had a touchdown in the first half. JL looked more confident, not forcing things. The kid Wicks from UVA continues to improve and impress. We had completions over twenty yards. The defense played stout and allowed less than two hundred yards. The not so good, injuries continue to pile up, with KC getting banged up and after catching a long contested pass, so did Watson. we really cant afford to be without either. The penalties......three first downs were negated by two perfectly executed sneaks by love, and another by a holding call. Defense had early back to back penalties on a drive that fortunately was blown up by a turnover. Two turnovers. Overall a good team effort. We will need another next week at the steelers. GOPACKGO!

Surprised at how awful a former super bowl team of a few years ago has gone into the tank so fast. Not surprised that my guess that if Jones could run, Lefleur would call plays to carry the day rather then try and rely on the arm of our new QB who should be given more duties. Your never going to see what he can do by handing off the ball one play after another. Your wasting any development opportunities.
I squarly put the lack of success of Love on LeFleurs back now. Obviously he doesnt think much of Loves abilities per practices and is trying to wing it. 3-5 says it all. He is Gutts boy all right.
