Gutey Often Pairs Veteran Free Agent Additions w/ Eventual Draft Picks
One trend that has developed during Brian Gutekunst's time as GM is that he will pair a veteran free agent addition with an eventual early-round draft pick.
By Paul_Bretl

The Green Bay Packers adding a veteran free agent wide receiver to the roster isn't really much of a surprise.
For one, the quality of the depth of that unit needed a boost, not to mention that Sammy Watkins will provide another steady pass-catching target for Aaron Rodgers to rely on while any rookie(s) adjusts to the NFL. On top of that, it's likely going to take at least a little time for Rodgers and any rookie(s) to get on the same page, while he and Watkins should have a relatively smoother transition, especially with Watkins' previous experience playing under Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur, and the Los Angeles Rams in 2017.
However, there's another big reason that we should have expected Brian Gutekunst to make a move at receiver prior to the draft, and that's because he's frequently paired up veteran free agent signings with early-round selections during his tenure as GM.
Prior to selecting Jaire Alexander and Josh Jackson in the 2018 draft, Gutekunst signed Tramon Williams and Davon House. In 2019 free agency, he would add Za'Darius Smith, Preston Smith, Adrian Amos, and Billy Turner to then select Rashan Gary, Darnell Savage, and Elgton Jenkins. Even last year, he brought back Kevin King to then select Eric Stokes with his first pick.
There are also examples of Gutekunst spending early-round picks on well-established positions--mainly the 2020 draft when he selected Jordan Love to join Aaron Rodgers, AJ Dillon to couple with Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams, and then Josiah Deguara to join a tight end room with Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis.
We've seen several Green Bay Packers rookies during this time end up playing significant roles in their first season, but Darnell Savage was really the only truly preferred Week 1 starter. Alexander began the season in terms of snap counts behind Williams and King. Gary was behind the Smiths, Jenkins didn't become the starter until after Lane Taylor was injured, and King was CB2 to begin the 2021 season.
Again, as we've seen, rookies can end up being impact players, but Gutekunst constructs the roster so that they don't have to be if they aren't ready for that role. While we all hope that the early-round picks can contribute immediately and make an impact, many rookies end up struggling, or at the very least, it requires some time. The performance we saw from Eric Stokes in 2021, where he allowed a completion rate of just 51% while logging nine pass breakups, is much closer to being the outlier than the norm for first-year players.
The addition of Watkins certainly shouldn't change what the Green Bay Packers do in the draft at the receiver position. It is still a major need for 2022, as well as beyond, where it actually gets a bit worse.
But suppose Green Bay selects Jameson Williams, who might not be ready for Week 1, or whichever receiver they do select needs time to get acclimated with LaFleur's nuanced offense or has to adjust to the precision that Rodgers requires from each of his pass-catcher. In that case, the offense has a veteran pass-catching option in Watkins -- along with Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard -- to lean on heavily as the rookie(s) are brought up to speed.
The interior defensive line is another position to keep your eyes on early in the draft. With only five players under contract currently, along with Kenny Clark and TJ Slaton being the only interior linemen under contact in 2023, this is certainly a need that should be addressed at some point.
Although Gutekunst hasn't invested any premium draft capital into this position in the past, if the Jarran Reed addition follows this trend of pairing a veteran presence with an early round pick, then we just may end up seeing one of Green Bay's top-100 picks devoted to this position as well.
Perhaps this approach that Gutey takes can be easily overlooked, but once again, considering that many rookies have their ups and downs, it's an approach that makes sense -- especially for a team with Super Bowl aspirations -- as it provides stability to the roster.

I agree. There will be needs at those positions this year but the focus will be long term. I doubt any drafted WR or lineman will be a stellar starter in their first year so a mix is always best. As much as I want this team to win it all, I still must respect the need to field a good team year after year.

Yup. Well documented. Short term commitments to FAs to create room for young draft picks to come along at their own pace.

Good article Paul. You make some excellent points. I like the way we are matching our draft picks with a veteran. I particularly like the flexibility it provides because there's no need to rush the rookie onto the field. This seems like a pretty smart way to do business! Go Gutey go!

What a PHENOMENAL piece and a great get here, Paul. Just so spot on.
I like it. You just convinced me that Jameson Williams, despite his injury, might be a viable target early, knowing Gutekunst has the draft capital in a deep WR, OT and EDGE draft to stick to addressing his main team needs.
WR is LOADED going way back into R6 with talent and beyond this year. Quality talent. Maybe he thinks he can burn one early with Jameson, knowing he can literally pound the crap out of the position with all the ammo he has Day 2-3.
I dislike drafting players with injuries. 100%. But, his talent is so top flight, and they have come a long way with ACL surgeries. If you take the player with a legit timetable for maybe playoffs or next season in mind... I guess I could see that being a solid choice.
Gutekunst has got the chips to make some real hay in this draft. Trading down from #28 might be of benefit, as might be trading down from #53 or #59...
Good call on the Reed signing. Love the signing, and I love the idea of adding better players next to Clark. Slaton was a draft steal last year R5, and I know there are some good ones that might be had into early Day 3.
Run stop is a very big need for this team too. Questioning whether or not they might be wanting to upgrade from Barnes next to Campbell this draft. I sense that might be the case. Campbell was, after all, another veteran (re)signing!
Really enjoy your work, Paul. Totally agree. This could get interesting...

I think Reed's a pretty significant upgrade at DT...that will make the base defense look all the better against the run.

Yeah, I really like Jarran Reed, a complete player and veteran. Agree he’ll help our run stop, but I do think they’ll add another NT or 3-tech in this draft regardless of his signing.
Hoping for LB and DE upgrades, really, to help make for a complete fix. I’ve got some real favorites I covet at those spots too. Some really good ones all over Day 2.
Could easily see Gutekunst trade down, either from #22 or #28, or both, depending how the runs hit, and the players remaining . I think the math on these works for possible deals:
28 to NYJ for 35 111, 146
28 to NYJ for 38, 111, 117
22 to NYG for 36, 67
Can you imagine? Might not be a bad way to roll, given the talent load throughout all of Day 2 into the top of Day 3. If they traded both, that would be 10 picks between top R2 - bottom R4. Serious value there, and serious talents.
Thinking NYG probably would LOVE to jump in front of DAL at 24 by trading for our 22 (both need OL). NYJ may want to jump back in R1 too along with NYG as both are needing to bolster both O & D lines.
I mean some tough decisions for GB if a bigger run hits WR early, gobbling up the top group before 22. Doubt that happens, but, good to plan around just in case. New Orleans with 2 picks ahead of us (19 & 20) doesn’t sit well. KC right behind our #28 with both 29 & 30 doesn’t either. Much to consider.

GG, I am all in for the Giants trade, maybe add #182 and give them a 7th.
My hope is to trade with Jax; #28 for.... 33, 106, & 188.
I would only do this if a run on WR occurs. I would pick a stud DL at 22, trade 28, then draft WR Dotson at 33. We still have both our second-round picks plus a fantastic WR who would not be as much of a reach at pick 28. We also would be picking first pick 4th round day three. A great place to assess trade opportunities or draft a player we need. The 188 pick breaks up our 57-pick drought we presently have now between 5th & 7th round. I hope Gute holds his water & does not trade up in the first round. Let the board fall our way! I am hoping 3 QBs, only up to 3-4 WRs, and a boat load of DBs are picked prior to 22.

In a PFF mock draft I got this:
22 DL Jordan Davis (not going to happen) sub in any D stud available.
TRADE JAX. 28 for 33, 106, & 180
33 WR Jahan Dotson
53 WR Christian Watson
59 Edge Cameron Thomas
92 WR David Bell
106 OT Zach Tom
132 OT Braxton Jones
140 TE Charlie Kolar
171 S Smoke Monday
180 HB D'Vonte Price
228 S Tre Sterling
249 HB T. J. Pledger
258 P Jordan Stout
Other than Jordan Davis, most picks are not crazy wild ones.

I really like Dotson. Didn’t think I would, but, wow. Great player.
As for who gets taken where, who is available, seems there are plenty of players who can help make this team much better in a couple of weeks.

Love Cine or Devonte Wyatt at 28

The Mock gave me this as Olave is my top Wideout:
#19 Olave WR #22 and #59 to NOLA
#28 Devin Lloyd LB
#53 Trey McBride TE
#92 Sam Williams Edge
#132 A. Taylor CB ( he may be the #92)
#140 R.Wallace OT
#171 Zamir White RB
#186 Goedeke OG #228 and 2023 5th to move Up)
#249 T Anderson S
#258 Andries OG

He's the man. In this mock Wilson, London and Williams were off the board. Williams is over-rated and Burks is also climbing up the ladder. Impact Player Wanted.

I have run over 100 mock simulations on 4 different sites and finally came up with 1 dream draft. I know there's absolutely no chance for GB to replicate this one but if they draft even 3 or 4 of these guys I will be ecstatic.
From the PFN Mock Draft simulator
22. Trevor Penning OT
28. Treylon Burks WR
53. Boye Mafe Edge
59. George Pickens WR
92. Leo Chenal LB
132. Jelani Woods TE
140. Zyon McCollum CB
171. Max Mitchell OT
228. Thomas Booker DT
249. Velus Jones Jr. WR/Return specialist
258. Kevin Austin WR
I didn't make any trades and just picked my favorite players at each pick. In the real world this won't be possible but I thought I'd post it anyway for the fun of it.

I tried the Opposite like George Constanza as Olave seems to be off the boards by 13-14.
#23 LLoyd LB ( 22 and 132 to AZ for #23 and 55)
#29 Watson WR ( #28 to KC for Burks for the 29 and 103)
#53 Pierce WR
#55 McBride TE
#59 Lucas RT
#92 Logan Hall DT
#103 Williams EDGE
#160 Mathis CB ( 140 and 2023 5th to chargers for #160,195, 214)
#171 Krull TE
#195 Goedeke OG
#214 Bolden S
#228 Horvath RB/FB
#249 Booker DT
#258 Chance Campbell LB
Trade downs seem to work and the tail end of the draft is to stock the sp teams. Last year's crew can go.

He I have a novel idea. Lets match our new receivers if we draft any, with the QB and the QB coach. I mean does anyone think Cobb took Rodgers aside and showed him the ropes. Doesnt happen. Thus Rodgers caught three passes last year, some pick for Gutty.
Hey as a training specialist you dont take a guy who was mostly so so on several teams and ask that person to show the newbie the ropes.

You've gotta be trolling.
You know that Randall Cobb and Amari Rodgers have a personal connection that goes back to Amari's childhood, right?
Cobb has literally been "showing him the ropes" since Amari was a kid.

Even with DA we did not have the WR horses to beat the better teams. We needed a 1a or ascending #2 WR. When you are not successful running you need to be able to go toe to toe in the air. Along with multiple OL injuries these two issues have been hindering us for years. Tonyan being injured earlier in the season and Dillon getting hurt in 1st RD finished it. I'm glad we signed Watkins and am looking forward to Tonyan coming back. I would say we still need THE #1 WR we still don't have. Not sure what we could do with what money we have left. If Gute can't wrangle a vet away or swap JA for them. I would say Gute plan SHOULD BE to move up in RD.1 and get the best WR with #1 WR traits and see where it takes us. ML does have options but AR would have to use them all and he just has not done that unless DA was missing from the line-up. Now that he's gone maybe things change some....we can only hope and pray.
