Hello Wisconsin: What Makes a Rivalry, Anyway?

It's Bears week, and one fanbase is about to be salty.

REAL FOOTBALL IS HERE AT LAST.

Tonight the NFL makes its triumphant return in the form of a game pitting the Detroit Lions against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

But more importantly, it’s Bears Week for the Green Bay Packers, and we are just three days away from finally having some sort of conclusion to an entire offseason’s worth of chatter from both fanbases.

There’s always plenty to talk about when these two teams. This week, one of the main subjects of conversation has been whether Bears vs. Packers can actually qualify as a rivalry any more, given the Packers’ uninterrupted three-decade run of dominance.

The point here is pretty plain; the Packers have three times the number of victories the Bears have in the rivalry since 1992, when Brett Favre took over the reins as the Packers’ starting quarterback. As dominant as Favre was in the rivalry, Rodgers was somehow even more dominant, to the point where the sight of the Bears defeating the Packers is now about as common as sightings of an actual bear in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Rasul Douglas made some headlines when he said he doesn’t really feel the rivalry that much, and doesn’t really harbor any particular hatred for the Bears, having never lost to them. One of his points was that players move around more than they used to, so there’s never really a built-in feeling of actual hatred or rivalry for a team. Instead, it’s more a sense of “well, we’re supposed to hate these guys, so I guess they’re our rivals.”

Probably easier to make this statement when you’re always on the winning side, but it definitely is an interesting point. The league has significantly evolved, and most players aren’t playing their entire careers with a single team any more due to free agency and contract structures being what they are. Rivalries between teams had much more juice to them in past decades when they were able to build up with mostly the same faces playing each other over the course of numerous years.

The loss of a player like Aaron Rodgers, who had been with the Packers for 18 seasons, really hurts the rivalry even more. He’s one of a few players who had a historical appreciation for the rivalry based on extensive personal experience. Really at this point, the only other Packer with that same sort of experience in the rivalry is David Bakhtiari. The Bears have also seen significant turnover, mostly because they suck.

Now, all that being said, rivalries are just as much for fans as they are for players. While players and coaches come and go, fans remain for decades.

In my life, I have known nothing other than the Packers beating the absolute tar out of the Bears ad nauseum. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t consider what they’ve got a rivalry. While competitive games might help increase the intensity of a rivalry, the history these two teams have alone make it a rivalry that cannot be topped by any other in the league.

It’s big city versus small town America. It’s single ownership versus community ownership. It’s NFL football in its midwestern roots. It’s the only rivalry in the league that dates back to the league’s origins.

I don’t need to preach to you all about the history of the Packers and Bears, about Halas vs. Lambeau and Lombardi or about all of the players and moments over the course of a century.

But I do find any fans who state, even when doing so to troll, that this isn’t a rivalry to be rather disingenuous. This isn’t just a rivalry; it’s THE rivalry.

Embrace it and enjoy it, because that rivalry starts a new chapter this weekend.

Wisconsin Beer of the Week

With the calendar having turned over to September, it’s time to start drinking some beers that are a bit on the maltier side. This, of course, means I can welcome Oktoberfests back into my diet. But there’s also the overlooked Scotch Ale, a malty favorite that really works at any time of year, but especially in the fall and spring.
Raised Grain recently made a good one that is barrel aged, so you get that nice brown ale texture with plenty of bourbon barrel flavor seeping into it. It’s called Six Stone, and comes in at a high (but not unreasonable) 8.91 percent ABV.

Despite the bold sharpness one would expect from barrel aging, this is overall a pretty smooth, malt-forward beer. You can tell there’s a bit of Belgian influence here with some of the aftertaste.

According to Raised Grain, the beer’s name comes from the weight of the grain (in stone) that gets put into every barrel of beer.

I purchased this one relatively recently, so if you’re interested in giving it a shot, you should definitely be able to find it around southeast Wisconsin, and probably other areas as well. Check it out!

Injury concerns already for the Packers

There were collective gasps all over the platform formerly known as Twitter when it was revealed that Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs were both surprising no-gos in practice on Wednesday. At the time I’m writing this their status for Thursday (and the weekend) remains unclear, which, of course, leads one to wonder whether they’ll be ready in time to play, or if they’ll be effective if placed on the field.

If the worst-case scenario occurs and neither Doubs nor Watson are available and ready to go on Sunday, the only member of the receiving corps with any NFL regular season experience will be Samari Toure (and that’s just barely).

If such a scenario were to arise, I’d have to expect that the Packers would lean heavily on Luke Musgrave and short passing attacks over the middle. Jayden Reed would get plenty of looks as well, but Musgrave seems to be a guy the Packers already want to get heavily involved in the passing game anyway, and Love’s top two targets being out would be plenty of reason for him to get bumped to the top. There’s also always the option to get Aaron Jones more involved as a receiver, but he can only do so much to make up for the loss of Doubs and Watson.

It could certainly be a major challenge in the first official game of the Jordan Love era, especially playing on the road against a division rival. However, the Packers are certainly capable of still managing to make up for those losses and eke out a win against what was the league’s worst team a season ago.

Around the NFC North

As always, it’s time to go around the NFC North.

  • The CHICAGO BEARS have an opportunity to kick off the season by taking down their hated rivals for the first time since 2018, the final year the Packers played under Mike McCarthy. Bears fans seem to have fairly lofty expectations for this team this year, which is hard for me to understand given the team’s additions and still-existing roster holes. They will likely not be the league’s worst team, but they have a long way to go even just to get out of the basement of the division. My prediction for the Bears this year: 5 wins, and a lot of questions about what to do with the quarterback position when the year is over.

  • The DETROIT LIONS are another team entering the season with high expectations, and have a chance to really surprise us all tonight in Kansas City. Basically everyone is chalking this game up as an easy win for the Chiefs. If the Lions come in and even play Kansas City tight for four quarters, it’s going to give a lot of credence to the idea that this isn’t the same old Lions. And I really do believe that these AREN’T the same old Lions, but that doesn’t mean they’re great, either. I think around 9 wins is probably what one could reasonably expect from them this season, so that’s what I’m going to predict.

  • The MINNESOTA VIKINGS are probably the one team in the NFC North where there aren’t expectations for them to exceed their production and success of a season ago. With no real stars outside of Justin Jefferson and with no real identity to the team, it’s hard to imagine the Vikings making another playoff push unless the rest of the NFC North allows them to get there by default. I’ll put in a prediction of around 8-9 wins for the Vikings this season as they enter a slight decline.

My 2023 season predictions

What other predictions do I have for this season? Here are just a few:

  • Packers have a winning season and achieve a playoff berth (this probably says more about the NFC than it does about the Packers)
  • The league champions will be either the Chiefs, Bengals or Bills, and the season leading up to the Super Bowl will have felt rather pointless because of how predictable it all was.
  • The New York Jets will push for a wild card berth but will not make it past their first playoff game. Aaron Rodgers will play at least 65% of their snaps.
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers will be the surprise team in the AFC that does better than everyone expects. In the NFC, it will be the Packers.
  • Division champions in the AFC: Buffalo, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Jacksonville. In the NFC: Dallas, Green Bay, New Orleans, San Francisco.
  • League MVP will be whichever of Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, or Patrick Mahomes throws the most TDs.
  • While most people expect the Cardinals to have the league’s worst record this year, it’ll end up being the Colts instead.
  • The first coach to be fired will be Brandon Staley of the Chargers.

Back to school

Hoping everyone affected who’s reading this had a successful transition back to school, if you hadn’t already made the leap!

I had my first day in the classroom with students on Tuesday, and WHEW I am exhausted. I forgot just how much the “teacher tired” hits during that first week. I came home and fell asleep on my living room chair before dinner time. Last year during the first month of school my wife and I would be watching TV on Friday evening after eating our usual takeout dinner, and I kept passing out and missing the shows because my body hadn’t adjusted yet.

I think I’m a little bit more prepared for that feeling of exhaustion this year, but full-time edutainment really does a number on you! You’ve got to be *on* ALL DAY, and staying on top of so many different things.

Meanwhile, my kids had their first days of kindergarten and 3k, so it was a big day all around in the Backes household. I was anxious all day as my son went into all-day school for the very first time, but he ended up doing quite well. I don’t think I’ll stop feeling some anxiety about him during the school day for the next 13 years. Parenthood, right?

For those of you in school or who have kids or grandkids in school, my next beer is dedicated to you and your success this school year!

Imagine what happens if the Packers win this weekend

I don’t think it’s possible to understate just how tragic a Packers win would be for the Bears.

They FINALLY are rid of Brett Favre AND Aaron Rodgers. The Packers move on to a relative unknown at quarterback, while they have a quarterback with promising athleticism that has been the subject of a great deal of hype from their fanbase. They spend an entire offseason talking trash, despite their team having defeated the Packers just five times since the Bush administration.

Then, week one, in their own house, the Packers come out with a brand new quarterback and win anyway, keeping Matt LaFleur’s record against the team unblemished and allowing Packer fans continuing to assert their superiority in just about every single debate over football.

If this really happens, Chicago sports radio is going to be an absolute must-listen, and I’m going to spend SO much time on the Bears subreddit just to soak in the schadenfreude. Get your popcorn ready, folks.

Predictions for Packers/Bears and Week 1

Okay, it’s put up or shut up time after all the talking.

And here’s the thing–I just can’t pick the Bears to win. I can’t do it. They were awful a season ago, and Justin Fields has to be able to prove he’s capable of throwing the football at a professional level for me to have any faith in this team to win more than a handful of games. The Packers are better on both sides of the football and, as of this year, significantly better in the trenches, which is going to be critical to their success all season long.

Yes, it’s a very young team playing on the road in a hostile environment on an awful playing surface, potentially down a couple playmakers (or at least having those playmakers hampered by injury). But I see the Love era starting with a win that is certain to get Chicago sports radio humming in the aftermath.

Packers 24, Bears 19

With that being said, here are the rest of my predictions for the week. Feel free to play along with me!

Chiefs over Lions

Bengals over Browns

Ravens over Texans

Vikings over Buccaneers

Falcons over Panthers

Commanders over Cardinals

Jaguars over Colts

Steelers over 49ers

Broncos over Raiders

Titans over Saints

Eagles over Patriots

Rams over Seahawks

Chargers over Dolphins

Cowboys over Giants

Bills over Jets

Going to be an interesting week to kick things off, and you know that there are always some wacky things that happen week one. Can’t wait for it all to get started!

My predictions for this game:
Watson and Doubs either don’t play or play very little.
Melton and DuBose BOTH get activated and play a decent amount of snaps.
We grab two interceptions.
We are gouged by two long runs.
The game is close, but a turnover by one of the teams in the final minutes determines the outcome.

Packers win?

If both Watson and Doubs don't play then IMO the Packers REALLY need to do something with the Strength and Conditioning Coaches on this team.

I mean common man, it's Week one! They hardly played in the preseason and they go into week one questionable?

SIGH...

I hope Matt LaFleur is doing his best Bill Belichick impression and at least one or both are available and they play like NOTHING was injured.

I think gamesmanship as much as hamstring concerns. MLF was rather coy in yesterday's presser. He didn't answer any specifics on the Watson/Doubs and was very evasive.

Give the bears' DC / staff more work to do.

I was encouraged how calm and confident he was and almost looked like he was enjoying the poker game. Different coach handling this now vs a few years ago.

"They spend an entire offseason talking trash, despite their team having defeated the Packers just five times since the Bush administration."

Just THINK about that for a minute. Just 5 wins since Bush was in office. That is CRAZY. You'd think with the parity the NFL has tried to create, ALL those Free Agents the Bears have signed, and some of the high draft picks they've had (or at least didn't trade away LOL) they'd won at least a few more games...FIVE wins...HAHAHA!!!!

Not only do the Bears still suck... They will ALWAYS suck!

Good morning, Packer fans! Season starts tonight. Go Chiefs!

Rivalries still exist today with fans but they are less intense among players. From Veteran Douglas: "I guess they are our rivals." To Rookie Musgrave: "Its just football."

Add in the annual roster churn, on both the Packers and Bears this season, and the "first game" of the season is more motivating than the team on the schedule for the locker room. Plus, 7 % of the Bears roster are recent Packers: Patrick, ESB, Tonyan, Lewis.

For me as a fan however, the Ugly Purple is more of a rivalry by far. I love the Packers/bears historical rivalry...books have been written on it. But MN? Two teams have to win every week...the Packers and who ever plays the vikings. At least twice a season it is the same team.

This will sound strange because the team I loathe most are in the AFC—the Broncos. Losing the SB to them still makes me sick and therefore beating the Broncos this year will satisfy me more than any other victory. Frankly, I tolerate the Bears and their fans far better than the donkey and/or Viking teams/fans.
The beer you suggested looks awesome. It reminds me of a very good Scottish Ale I recently purchased named “Ole Chubb”.
I predict we beat the Bears simply because we have a better roster.
Go Packers!!!

Starrbrite. I agree with your sentiments on the Broncos. I lived in Denver from 1988 to 1992 and you are constantly marinating in a Broncos soup. Unfortunately my son became a Bronco fan the year they beat us. I grounded him for a year. Then he grows up and moves to Denver. I cant win!

BTW. I love Old Chubb. Guess where the Brewery is. Denver. 😂

Tingham—loved your response. “Grounded for a year”—cracked me up!
You and I lived in Denver at the same timeframe—loved the city hated the Broncos.
I was a special agent with INS—you may perhaps recall a case of mine that made front page news a couple times—business owner recruiting and raping young foreign nationals…convicted him.
“Ole Chubb” brewed in Denver—geesh, may have to give it up…tsk tsk.
Good conversing with you.
Go Packers—hope the Broncos lose every game except the wins that assist the Packers.

Seems like no matter how bad the team is this game is always a nail biter. When the Packers were bad in the 70s and 80s, they still played them tough enough to keep the coaches' jobs.

Tim, you must know something I don't (not surprising) to make some of these picks. Rams over Seahawks? Is there an injury I don't know about? I hope you nailed the Steelers over 49ers. Very brave. Are you taking the points on Titans over the Saints? Chargers over Dolphins is a brave one too.

"Now, all that being said, rivalries are just as much for fans as they are for players."

Actually, rivalries are WAY more for the fans. It's not even close. The players all have friendly chats with each other on the field when the game is over, no matter how it ended. That's never how the fans feel. For most Packers fans, the Vikings have become a bigger rival than the Bears, but you can have more than one big rivalry, and the one with the Bears is still special.

The hamstrings! Why now, when they were both healthy all through training camp? This could be a real problem.

Real Football? Or is this a Snafu.
Douglas won’t be guessing with the first
Cheap shot.
And with players already nursing something.
I have to wonder if somebody will,
"Sound off like they have a pair."
Free Agency has changed the NFL.
The "bury your opponent hate.”
Has been replaced by ROSTER turn-over.
And now that Jordan Love is the leader.
I just don’t believe in any scenarios.
It’s all about Field position.
And it has to start with the running game.
The QB prove it; is on both sides.
Either we expect a win.
Or we’ve already lost.

I don’t get that fired up about Bear games anymore. I used to in the 80s when Ditka was the coach because the guy was such an enormous douchewad. And I must say I would’ve liked to have seen Brian Urlacher get his ass kicked by that MMA guy he tried to pick a fight with before his security got him away. But today’s Bears? Yawn.

Of course, I hate the Vikings because of where I live and the fact that when they beat the Packers, all my neighbors let me hear about it for weeks. Even though most of these folks care more about the MLS and FIFA than football.

But for me the real rivalry is the Dallas Cowpies. I hate their billionaire dick owner, I hate their fans, I hate that smug Aikman, I hate Michael Irvin, I hate the cheerleaders, I hate the Alamo, I hate cowboy hats, and I hate Lone Star beer. I really hate remembering the 90s when every game was in Dallas and Favre would throw 4 interceptions and the Packers would be out of the playoffs. F the Cowboys!
BTW, I know the Alamo is in San Antonio but I had to throw that in to piss off any Texans on this site.

Understandable, but I always liked the Bill Walsh/Joe Montana 49ers, mainly because they would knock the Cowpies and Ditka out of the playoffs, which I appreciated. So, I guess I still cut them some slack.
They have been hard to take since the Harbaugh days because the Packers seem to self-destruct every time they meet in the playoffs but that is more on the Packers than the Niners.

Injury concerns already for the Packers-
Not going to lie I cringed when I saw Watson wasn't practicing. He is a true difference maker and can't be replaced easily. Doubs is a hard one because he has really built that rapport with Love.
Its crazy to think the Packers have 6 WR's on the roster and half of them have hamstring injuries. Hopefully Wicks will be ready to go. He was limited in practice. Hopefully Watson's was more of tightness and they are being overly protective.

Worst case scenerio and both guys can't play, it will definitely be a challenge. But I feel like they have enough weapons to get through a game if needed. Jones, Dillon, Reed, Musgrave, Heath, Deguara, will all be used.

Around the NFC North
This year is up for grabs. It could be any teams division to win.

The CHICAGO BEARS
I have a hard time seeing the Bears being great this year. They likely will be improved, but I don't see greatness. The only way is if Fields improves drastically.

The DETROIT LIONS
A lot of people are predicting the Lions to with the North. Which maybe they will. They finished the season very strong last year. But have to wonder if they overachieved or if they are the team ready to take over.

The MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Last year the Vikings won every one of their one score games. The odds of that happening again aren't great. I see the Vikings regressing at least some this year. They lost a lot of talent.

The thing that worries me about the Lions is their O-line. A team can win allot of games if they win in the trenches, and that's a stout line. Can't believe I'm saying that about the Lions.

I'm buried in Lions country (well, the Lions' TV market...the fan base is only really just starting to wake up to them), and I have to admit that the new management has committed to building this team from the OL out...which--as you said--is how you score points. In a league that's all about putting up points, that's the start.

That said, they're mediocre or worse just about everywhere on their defense aside from Aidan Hutchinson, which means there will be a lot of heartbreak for them.

They do have a good OL. And you are correct, that is how you start to win a lot of games. Games are won in the trenches. That being said you have to have the skill players and the defenders to be complete.
Also Hutchinson on the front looks like he could be a menace.

But also. This game you have to have the QB. Goff has looked good but can also look very average. If Goff plays well this team for sure will be competing for the North. If he plays average, they will be a very average team.

With the current 15 second attention span many folks now possess it's easy to forget this rivalry has been going on for a century.

Here's the overall record: Green Bay Packers lead series 105-95-6. The Bears were ahead of the Packers for a long time and it's only the past few decades that enabled the Packers to catch up. So "I own you" was only accurate during the Favre and His Darkness eras.

If you watched the head-knocking games of decades past you know it's a rivalry. The games in the 60's were brutal. The games with the Vikings and Lions during that time were also far from friendly.

On O, we know what to "expect" from their infantry. Solid RBs to go with run first Fields.

Bears experts are claiming their TE room is the best it has been in years. OK! 2/3rds of the chairs belong to 2022 Packers Tonyan and Lewis.

Unexpected may come from DJ Moore and Claypool. Good receivers but can Fields connect?

On D, their strengths are LBs with Edmunds, ex Badgers TJ Edwards and Jack Sanborn, and rookie Sewell and at S with Jackson and Brisker (good duo!).

Packer strengths in this one:
1. Packer O line vs Bears overhauled DL
2. Packers front 7 vs Bears OL (a current mess)

Turnovers always the great equalizer...win the T/Os. Rich's men need to have a field flipping day too.

Absolutley. 👍

From Lovie's famous "my first goal" to this summer's talking head nonsense about a regime change, in Chicago this rivalry is real. I watched a little of Bears stuff this week to see the other side, and it was shocking how often they mentioned Rodgers for no reason I could imagine, and I lost count of the "this year got 'em" claims.

It's kind like McCarthy's "we're nobody underdog" line-- GB is 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 rival but the Packers' rival is whomever they're playing this week.

"Around the NFCN--"

The Lions are playing what amounts to their SB tonight. They want to burst onto the scene and show that they're no fluke. I expect that they'll be full of fire early and will try to punch the Chiefs in the mouth...keeping in mind that Reid and the Chiefs have won a few championships and they'll know that you don't win SBs in September. I wouldn't be too surprised if the Lions win tonight, esp. if Kelce and Chris Jones don't play (I think they won't)...but the Lions are a different team on the road. Goff isn't the same player. I'm expecting a sloppy 34-24 type game, and I have a hard time NOT picking the Chiefs. It'll be all about who makes the fewest mistakes.

The Vikings should beat Tampa, but it will be tight. Mayfield is circling out of the starting QB ranks and will end up a backup after this season.

I'm ready to see what this Packers team can do. I was firmly of the belief that the marriage between 12 and the Packers had gotten stale, and his talk of retirement meant it was time (past time) to move on. I think that 10 in the backfield makes this a fundamentally different offense, and will bring what amounts to a lot of "unscouted looks" even though they'll be running the same schemes. I'd much rather this first game was at home, though.

I'll echo what murf said: I think the "rivalry" means a lot more in Illinois than it does in GB right now. It won't matter to them that 12 is gone--he gave them plenty of ammo to build on. I absolutely want to see the Packers win, but I think it's just as important that they play well. They need the defense to lead the way, and they need to attack the Bears' OL.

This is a Bears team with better personnel than they saw last year. They turned over most of the roster, which means it will take time for them to get used to playing together--meanwhile the Packers are young, but the only starter who wasn't part of the 53 last season is Musgrave (and maybe Reed, if you consider 11 personnel). The Bears' secondary is still bad, and the Packers will need to attack that, but they can't abandon the run game. I'd be hitting the edges and asking their DEs to hold contain and make their LBs play sideline to sideline: Ngakoue has a track record of giving up the edge and run defense not even being a second thought, and neither Sanborn nor Edwards is particularly fast. That will likely mean the Packers will put a TE in-line or use one sealing the edge from the slot.

I'm of the opinion that we'll see both Doubs and Watson on Sunday. I think the Packers are just being cautious with them at this stage, and Doubs will be over two weeks removed from his injury. People want to downplay their potential absence, but they aren't #1 and #2 on the depth chart for no reason. If the Packers have to play with Heath, Toure, Reed, and a couple PS elevations, it will be really hard for them to win.

Steelers over Niners? Read a bunch of preseason projections yesterday and many expect the Niners to be the Super Bowl team from the NFC. Might be one of the better games.

Hey, the Niners lost their opener last year to the Bears, but IMO, this is one of the stronger teams in the NFC.

I could see them going 6-0 in their division. They're formidable. And the beautifiul thing is, we don't play them this year, but Minnesota does. We don't have to be concerned with the 49ers until January, at the earliest.

Opening in Pittsburgh isn't a day in the park, but after that, they play in LA and then have 3 home games. They need to make hay when the sun shines because they have some tough games on their schedule.

The rivalry aspect would be more enhanced if both teams were good at the same time, but that usually hasn't been the case over its course. In the more modern era, it would also help if the Bears had a dynamic offense or at least a QB that scared you a little bit, but that obviously hasn't happened, either.

It's only THE rivalry in a historical sense. Recently it's been mostly about the Packers taking care of business, although the upcoming game has more interest than usual with Love hopefully ready to inaugurate a new "ownership" streak.

The division games are still more important than the others, but in order to have a successful season you're going to need to beat a majority of the other 11 teams you face. To be honest, I get more satisfaction watching the Packers beat quality opponents no matter which division or side of the league they're in.

"The rivalry aspect would be more enhanced if both teams were good at the same time."

Definitely, and it's kind of wild how rarely it happens. From 1992-'94 there was a feeling it could go either way and 2010 of course. Other than a 61-7 murder by the Bears in 1980 the early '80s were pretty even. So 8-10 years out of 43.

It's a much bigger game and a lot more fun when both teams have winning records.

They've also only faced each other twice in the playoffs through the entire history.

A rivalry? SF has ended our season in ugly ways for a long time. The Jerry Rice fumble game in 1998. The Kaepernick game. The 2019 season. The 2021 season. Or you could look to the Giants, who bounced us in 2007 and 2011.....on our home field!!!

It's not a rivalry when one team always wins, and the other one never does. That's just a ritualized beat down. It's like these Vikings.....since they've been in the league, the Packers have won 7 titles and they've won 0. How is that a rivalry?

Jamyr Gibbs lived up to his draft position in one play, with about 2:40 remaining in the game.
