It’s Not Too Late for Sean Rhyan to End Packers 3rd Round Curse

The 3rd round has been a blind spot for Packers GM Brian Gutekunst, but there is still time for Rhyan to make an impact.

Sean Rhyan’s rookie year didn’t exactly go to plan.

The former UCLA tackle failed to get on the field for a single snap on offense in 2022, before ending the season with a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

This would have been a less than ideal start regardless of where he was drafted but given Packers fans are still haunted by the ghosts of third rounds’ past, Rhyan’s disappointing campaign was even more concerning.

For Green Bay’s GM Brian Gutekunst, the third round has been a house of horrors.

In his first draft in the big chair, Gutekunst moved back up into the third – handing over a fourth and a fifth-round pick to the Panthers – to select linebacker Oren Burks. He made little impact during his four years in Green Bay, mainly featuring on special teams.

Burks however is far from Gutekunst’s worst third-round pick. Two of them failed to play out their rookie contract with the Packers.

Tight end Jace Sternberger, drafted 75th overall in 2019, was waived by the Packers in 2021 after just 12 receptions across two seasons and one suspension for substance abuse. Sternberger now plays for the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL.

Two years later, the Packers used a third and a fourth-round pick to move up and select Amari Rodgers.

Rodgers was cut before the end of his second season in Green Bay after failing to break into the starting line-up on offense -- although his path was instantly blocked when Aaron Rodgers demanded Randall Cobb be signed – and enduring a disastrous run as a returner.

The Packers’ most successful pick in the third round in the Gutekunst era has to be considered tight end Josiah Deguara, and he hasn’t enjoyed a prolific NFL career to date.

Deguara tore his ACL during his rookie season, stunting his progress, and has accumulated only 371 receiving yards in his three years in the league.

However, Deguara has been tasked with more than simply running routes and catching passes for the Packers, often lining up in the backfield and serving as more of an H-back.

Whatever Deguara has been asked to do, he has generally done it well in Matt LaFleur’s offense and has become a steady, if unspectacular role player.

It is still a stretch to label him a truly successful pick at this stage, although perhaps he will have an increased role with Jordan Love now leading the offense.

So, it’s over to Rhyan to end the curse, and despite an inauspicious start, the makings of a quality NFL offensive lineman are still there.

He posted impressive athletic testing numbers in the pre-draft process, particularly in terms of his agility and explosiveness for a man of his size. At 321lbs with massive 11.125-inch hands, Rhyan is a big, athletic guy.

It remains to be seen if Rhyan fits best as a tackle or a guard at the NFL level due to his shorter 32.375-inch arms for the position, but he started for three years as a tackle at UCLA, including as a freshman, which is no mean feat.

Rhyan consistently got the job done in college, but it was clear he needed some work on his technique to successfully make the step up to the pro level, but there is still time for him to develop. In a 2022 class filled with older prospects, Rhyan was just 21 years old on draft day.

Zach Tom, who was drafted a round after him and saw plenty of playing time in his rookie year, was 23 during the 2022 draft. Perhaps Rhyan’s slower progress shouldn’t be such a surprise.

In a crowded offensive line room full of quality players to compete against, Rhyan will have his work cut out for him to crack the starting five in 2023, but there is still time for him to banish Green Bay’s third-round hoodoo.

Sean Rhyan has the build and athleticism of a OG. He couldn't have had a worse start to his NFL career, but something just tells me this guy went into his offseason knowing his career is delicately balancing on a thread. As a competitor after such a humiliating start to his career I believe he has been working out with a vengeance to prepare for the upcoming season. As the article states he is only 21-years old and playing against grown NFL men in the trenches, which is asking a lot at that age. The Packers need him to step up and improve to fortify their interior offensive line. Going to be fun watching him evolve and improve this year. Fingers crossed as I hope he is part of the youth movement and he plays in front of Jordan Love for the next 8-10 years!

Rhyan is certainly a conundrum as his college resume is impeccable, but he was invisible in his first year as a pro, even before the suspension. I think the Packer's draft will be the next indicator of how management feels about Rhyan. If they draft more interior OL, I suspect they are very concerned about Rhyan's bust potential. If they focus on OT's during their draft and don't draft much in the way of IOL, then that speaks volumes about their view of Rhyan since the only other reserve IOL on the roster are Newman and Hanson.

Like you Knock, fingers crossed that Rhyan figures out how to be a pro. This third round jinx in just nuts.

The thing about Rhyan is there’s obviously a story we do not know and some serious misjudgment. Clearly his head was not in the right place. In positions like this it’s 50:50 whether he straightens that out or doesn’t. If he does he’s a draft pick who I wasn’t thrilled with but didn’t loathe. However, he won’t now be on the inside track as a 3rd rounder. He’s going to have to prove he belongs and can play like a 3rd day pick, I expect. It’s on him now to show he wants and can handle it.

Personally, I’d draft like he does not exist. We can’t rely on him getting it right, so I wouldn’t. If he does, he’s a bonus and great, but we need internal OL competition and depth that I wouldn’t bet the farm on him providing.

Just a wild card here on the 3rd round. It’s quite possible that LaGleur’s original offense resurfaces this year. If it does, maybe Deguara gets a chance to show what an H back was envisaged as doing.

"Clearly his head was not in the right place."

Spot on CW. To perform as poorly as he did plus get a suspension certainly confirms your statement. I am somewhat encouraged that he is only 21 and hope that this is just immaturity rather than stupidity. The team should have a pretty good idea which one it is and the draft will tell us much about their thinking. For his sake, I hope it was immaturity and he grows up quickly. The NFL has little patience for ongoing screwups.

What is the criteria being used to gauge how poorly he did?

We've never seen him play a single snap on offense.

There were a lot of reports during camp that, despite a ton of reps at G, Hanson surpassed him. He never surpassed Newman and Tom hurdled him too. He ended up with the second and third string and was barely seen in preseason till very late if I recall. There was some talk of struggling to go from left tackle to the right at the same time as learning guard—he’d never played there before.

Personally, I see Rhyan as a G exclusively, but transitioning sides can take time (see Nijman and arguably Jenkins and Runyon having some adjustment issues), as well as learning G. So there maybe reasons that are not down to him. I also have real question marks about how a number of players were handled last camp and into preseason. I doubt that helped.

It’s also possible that the suspension issue was already present (I don’t know test timing or if appeals occurred or retesting was required). It could be he disappeared in part because of what was thought to be coming in terms of availability perhaps. All I can say is that, during camp, the universal opinion of writers and folks here who saw it was that he was not making any kind of positive impact.

Criteria? Combine wild imagination with an equal part of 'I think I know more than I actually do.' Mix until blended. Bake half as long as necessary. Post message repeatedly on internet sites until people accept it as a fact.

"We've never seen him play a single snap offense."

Correct. But the coaches have seen him play in practice and chose to play Hanson, Newman and Tom ahead of him. Playing Hanson ahead of Rhyan is a certainly an indictment since we did see Hanson play and play poorly.

Part of this is also expectations. A third rounder is normally not a project, but a guy you would hope would compete for a starting spot. If Rhyan had been a sixth rounder, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Sounds a lot like young TJ Lang, who spent the first couple years of his NFL career drinking heavily and not really doing what he should've been doing. Going into year 3, the lightbulb went on for him and became a pro's pro. Hoping for a similar story with Rhyan.

Good athletic tools

Great hair

GB has been successful with mid to late round picks on the O-line; is he coachable?

Are some of the required measurables unnecessary? Bulaga had either small hands or short arms or both and he turned out just fine

Gutey & Mitt Hendrickson (offensive lineman specialist) obviously made a thorough evaluation about Rhyan in deciding to select him at #92 spot in the 2022 draft. They typically are spot on with their offensive linemen decisions. Being a young rookie the game obviously was too big for him year 1. Ryan should continue to evolve & improve his strength organically along with his technique for quite a few more years. Even in 2023 he will only be 22-years of age! Wyatt came into the league last year at 24-years of age and struggled. Playing in the NFL trenches takes awhile for most rookies to adjust.

Yeah, that's Polamalu hair. Now if he could only have Polamalu's game.

I think arm length is pretty seriously overrated even at tackle, and especially if you kick him in to guard. Average tackle arms are 34." Rhyan is less by an inch and a half. Fine. Can he play?

I'd have to go back and do the research but I heard something last season regarding O-Linemen who have played under Chip Kelly...They suck, they never pan out in the NFL.

Now I don't know if that's accurate and I have a hard time believing the guy has never had an O-Lineman who panned out in the NFL mostly due to the type of offense he runs.

Hmmmm

OC,
Who knows but I understand NFL rookies go thru quite extensive testing when coming into the league. I just wonder at 21-years of age and being physically overwhelmed on a daily basis playing against grown men who have been performing heavy lifting for years was the impetus for the banned substance? It may simply be a young man's mistake from frustration of not being able to handle the size/strength, and physicality of the trenches. Glad he got caught right away because it forces him to work out even harder this offseason to overcome any strength & size discrepancies.

Or let's not discount the possibility that it could have been simple carelessness or a mistake made in ignorance. It's not always easy to stay on the right side of very strict drug tests. Some player carelessly takes some sort of "supplement" and whammo, you're suspended. Oh, and not because it actually enhances performance, but because its considered a "masking agent" etc. etc.

Let's not stop with the third round. Gutekunst's drafts have generally been busts from top to bottom. I won't list every pick here but look them up. Between poor selections to bizarre strategies the drafts are head scratchers at best to total incompetence at worst. Some picks have to play just based on shear numbers but the picks that actually make the Packers better are few and far between. I for one look forward to the day Gutekunst us no longer in charge.

I just searched to see what came up in terms of GM ratings. I was actually a little surprised (and I take these things with a large grain of salt) how highly others see Gute. NFL.com has him cited as the 4th best, USA 6th, PFN 9th. It’s at least interesting to note outside the perception of Gute and his drafts beyond GB.

My take is that each fanbase puts everything related to their team under a microscope. A fan should ask him/herself how much detail they know about their team vs. the other 31. Often, I think the assumption is that OUR GM, HC, OC, DC is an idiot while all the rest are geniuses.

I like to keep in mind the millions of $$$ invested in scouting players since High School, and through 2-4 years on college. Not to mention as you point out, the resources in play learning of other team’s intentions.

Spy capers, NFL Draft style!

I mean, really, we don’t know much as fans. We can make good guesses, put 2 and 2 together and all that, but, teams may have recon on tendencies not made public which removes players from boards, or, lowers their draft slotting.

There’s so much more we don’t know.

At times, yeah, I think some fans can glean there way around better than some NFL GMs, simply because they watch enough, and maybe employ more common sense, coupled with some luck.

A number of Chicago Bears GMs through history come to mind… Seriously, I think there are fans posting here that could have positioned the Bears, Lions, Vikings, and other teams in recent decades better than their own GMs upon occasion.

Mike Sherman comes to mind…

Some GMs refuse to let go of their own mistakes. Ted Thompson & Brian Gutekunst guilty as charged here, along with most GMs. (Noticed PHI did a phenomenal job of ditching recent draft miscues while simultaneously adding shrewdly some great FA talents which helped them into the last Super Bowl. Me being my best personnel geek fan self!).

Some GMs just can’t get out of their own way, resulting in lesser graded picks/choices. Josh Myers is a prime example where Gutekunst overthought it, with his bigger, taller players mantra.

The point is, all GMs miss more than they hit. In this respect, Gutekunst is more akin to being a very good hitter in baseball… (where true success is measured on a similar plane), maybe an All-Star in comparison to some. Maybe just solid to others. He’s not less than solid in my opinion. I believe we’re fortunate to have him.

These are the players Gute and staff have selected that some say are 'busts top to bottom'.

Jaire Alexander-considered one of the top 5 corners in the NFL.

MVS- Now a top receiver at Kansas City

Eq. St. Brown-on Bears roster

Rashan Gary-considered among the best edge players in the league.

D. Savage-work in progress but a consistent starter

E. Jenkins-Pro Bowler

K. Keke-played

Ty Summers-special teams stalwart.

Jordan Love-likely QB starter

AJ Dillon-great running back

J. Deguara-likely TE starter

John Runyan-solid guard and starter for two years.

Jonathan Garvin-backup edge.

Eric Stokes-starter at left corner as a rookie.

Josh Myers-starter at center for two years.

T. Slaton-very good defensive tackle.

S. Jean-Charles-solid corner back.

Quay Walker-starter at LB.

D. Wyatt-likely starter 2023.

C. Watson-potential superstar.

R. Doubs-potentially great receiver.

Z. Tom-potential starter in o-line.

K. Enegbare-potential starter at edge.

T. Carpenter-core special teamer and backup safety/LB.

S. Toure-could be a breakout slot receiver with Cobb gone.

Yes, there have been washouts, but every team has washouts.

The concept that Gute has been a failure at drafting doesn't hold up to the facts.

I don't think Gute is terrible, but he's not a top-notch drafter either. The holes currently on the roster are at least partially due to mediocre drafting. As a compliment to your list:

Alexander - agreed
MVS - moved up KC's roster due to departures, not on-field play. Still hasn't eclipsed 700 yards receiving in a season.
St. Brown - buried on the depth chart in a not great WR room.
Gary - has yet to get 10 sacks in a season. Those considered the "best" are getting 15+. Injury derailed a solid 2022 season. I hope he comes back from injury at the level he was playing at prior.
Savage - he had his time to be a work in progress and was benched. He'll start because there are no better alternatives.
Jenkins - my favorite pick of Gute's. I hope he comes into camp 100%.
Keke - played poorly and now bounces around the league.
Love - we shall see!
Dillon - fumbles in big moments. Doesn't break tackles like his frame suggests he can. Was tackled by a shoestring with a wide open TD just waiting for him in the Miami game. Maybe could've been picked one or two rounds later.
Deguara - If he's starting at TE, the TE room has reached the lowest of lows. Barely a serviceable h-back. Would've been available later in the draft.
Runyan - good production for his draft position.
Garvin - spot duty at best.
Stokes - hopefully his sophomore slump was more scheme than ability. I hope he comes back healthy, hungry, and ready to prove the first round pick.
Myers - started two years, but not solid play. Hindsight is great, but many wondered when he was picked how Creed Humphrey wasn't chosen instead.
Slaton - I don't know where you get very good, he's barely played.
Jean-Charles - buried on the depth chart. Unproven.
Walker - solid on-field play, needs significant coaching up on keeping his cool. I love his attitude and meanness, it needs to stay between the whistles.
Wyatt - already 25 with one pro season behind him. Getting a first rounder, age 24, and doesn't crack the starting rotation, not good. Will be a starter because ones ahead of him on the depth chart are gone, not due to improvement. Needs to step up this season.
Watson - looks great, when on the field. A complete, and healthy, season would go a long way.
Doubs - has potential.
Tom - looks like a 4th round steal.
Enagbare - potentially a 5th round steal.
Carpenter - potential.
Toure - potential.

Players that were high picks (1-3) and busts/not worth the pick: Josh Jackson, Oren Burks, Jace Sternberger, Amari Rodgers. Deguara will probably join the list, and Savage might.

There's a long list of late rounders that didn't pan out, but that goes for every team. Headscratchers include: a fifth-round pick for punter JK Scott, a seventh-rounder on long snapper Hunter Bradley, fifth-rounder Kamal Martin, who lasted one season on the roster.

He has found some decent UDFAs in the likes of Krys Barnes, Tyler Goodson, Caleb Jones has potential.

Compare what Wolf and Thompson did from rounds 3 to 7 to what Gutekunst has done. So far, Gutekunst's best picks after round 2 have been MVS and Runyan. The best player on your list, Aaron Jones, was a Thompson pick. Tom looks like a great pick, and Runyan a good one. The rest of the players you have on your list, don't paint a pretty picture, yet. If ESQ (I admit, I'm spacing on who you mean) is Equanimeous St. Brown, that's in the wasted pick category. MVS is gone. Dexter Williams is in the USFL. Deguara has proven nothing but being a middling h-back. Doubs, Toure, and Enagbare all look the part, but its far too early in their careers to say they're good picks, or busts.

Doubs I like, but he needs to get better. He got on the field in 2022 by default.

Deguara is underwhelming for a 3rd rounder. GB has been so bad in the third round that fans forget what is possible in that round.

TT drafted much better on day three.

20 years counted.
According to Pro Football Reference, most drafted players are busts. the only problem with their system is they don’t take into account the round they where picked. But anyway…
16.7% don’t even end playing for the drafting team (20 years average)
37% are considered ‘useless’, or busts.
5.3% are ‘poor’. Busts such as Jamarcus Russell are here.
So 69% are ‘poor’ or worst.
10.5% average
12.3% good
6.8% great
1% legendary
That gives 20.1% good. 2 out of 10.

I think everyone expected Walker (7th round pick) and Jones (UDFA) to be invisible their first year due to their draft status. We all hope for better, but the likelihood is they might be invisible for their careers. The expectations for Rhyan were and are much different due to his third round selection.

Odd what expectations can do since all three players were starting offensive linemen in power five conferences, but that is just the reality of draft status.

I think we did think they'd take a year or two to develop. At least most of us. I was hoping maybe Walker might step up by the end of last season, but that is a big ask.

I do hope one of them can take over RT this season though. Not saying we don't draft more OL, because we should with 10 picks (so far) but if Walker or Jones could plant their flag at RT, it would be a boon if either could be a +RT. It would be even better if Walker could take over at RG and Jones could take over at RT (or vice-versa) for decade.

Most late round/UDFA developmental tackles don’t play STs and thus are invisible after camp. Jones of course also was out with Mano for a good chunk anyway. They were presumably kept on the roster because T is a position where demand exceeds supply and the team saw enough potential not to expose them to waivers while they develop.

Ok - Let me add to this.
If they trade Rodgers for peanuts-
1. The Jets don't have to waste any
of their first or second picks on a QB.
2. They beat GB to the higher rated player.
3. The Packers instead must spend a quality pick.
Ok now that you can see the flip.
Gutey went to Tenn pro day.
Hooker would be a great target at Qb.
Now all you Rodgers haters.
Use that Formula on the trade.
Would you spend a #2 for Hooker.?

I looked at the guy and was impressed. He did well in college. I had high hopes for him. And I was aghast when they played Hanson instead of him. Unfortunately, he looks like Tarzan yet plays like Jane. The article does posit the theory that his maturity might have been the problem. Changing positions may have been too much for him. I don’t know. In any case we will see if he has learned his lesson and doesn’t end up like Amari Rodgers.

Here’s some notes I had laying around on Sean Rhyan:

OT Sean Rhyan - Rhyan has good balance and footwork, which means he could play as a rookie.

How he fits: A three-year starter at left tackle for Chip Kelly at UCLA who best projects to be a guard in the NFL. Rhyan is a 6-foot-4, 321-pounder with 11⅛-inch hands. His punch has plenty of power to it, and he has the potential to be a road grader in the NFL. Could be a very good run blocker in time, though like many linemen in this range, he’s going to have to settle into a new spot up front.

Still, 31 straight starts right out of high school at left tackle — you just don’t see that every day. Impressive player, smart athlete. Former rugby player, too. Green Bay offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich (promoted after last season) was an All-Big Ten offensive lineman at Michigan, and the Packers continue to invest in savvy offensive linemen with athletic potential. — Nick Baumgardner

Dane Brugler’s analysis: Rhyan is strong and balanced in both the run game and passing game, but he must play with quicker hands/feet and more efficient weight distribution for him to make it. He does his best work in short areas, projecting as a guard with NFL starting potential in either a power or zone scheme.

Could prove yet to be a solid addition to this Packers OL for years if/when he gets on the field. Could also prove to be the solid link in Gutekunst’s R3 bust run chain.

This one’s just going to take more time to find out. I didn’t have anything else in my notes, which means I didn’t want him. His arms are that short, and that far removed from the physical profile minimums required for the position.

Bryan Bulaga had ridiculously short arms at 33 1/4”. He was in that rare air of OTs who successfully overcame such measure (historically, they are few & far between). Sean Rhyan at 32 3/8”??? Wow. That’s a… uh… a stretch.

I found the Ryan pick to be a total head scratcher.

Short arms - not a pass protecter

Oh, I agree. All we gotta do is see the cat play so we can form an opinion!!!

Gutekunst has picked one helluva lot of players I never had in my notes! LOL.

I’ve followed his work extensively, like many here, and have seen his miscues & successes, his trending, tendencies during drafts, etc.

I’ve seen him lose focus, stick to parameters over resumes of more proven production… all that stuff.

I’ve also seen Gutekunst make bold, genius level moves to secure Top talents to our roster. Not to mention, those hidden gems sitting deep in rounds for the taking, and he knew them from his scouting & took them.

If you’ve never been a GM in the NFL, and you land THE job, you’re learning on the job.

We’ve spent 5 drafts watching Gutekunst’s evolution & development as a solid GM in Green Bay. One who’s been 100% compromised from above in his tenure. - My opinion.

Thought 2022 was his best draft ever. That’s yet to be determined, but it may prove corrections were made following what appeared to be epic gaffes in 2020, 2021.

I feel very strongly that BG strung together the best picks over the entirety of the 3 day stretch in 2023 like never before, where every selection was made with the utmost focus.

Every pick is important.

He’s supposed to actually have very good lateral ability and in fact virtually everything you claim he doesn’t except length. Film notes from after his pick bear that out, but I went to check what was actually said by others pre-draft. Just sticking to lateral agility, there was actually almost a total consensus view among the available scouting reports. Here is PFN’s version of that:

“possesses an observable explosive burst heading into contact, and he gets to the second level quickly. Rhyan blocks well in motion, and he’s also a very smooth lateral mover who transfers his weight well. The UCLA product is fairly light on his feet, with smooth footwork when changing direction or blocking angles, as well as good recovery athleticism.”

I’m not going to go into bat for Rhyan the person or pick, but I will call you for utter bullshit about an individual who has his back to the wall, presumably just to further your eternal agenda. Remember, people can check your “facts”.

A local kid from Upper wississippi. I watched him and his brother play in High School. Leo Chenal got his ring as a pass rush specialist. You were pushing him. I agree about his position for pass rush and he can plug inside gaps. I was pushing for Bellinger, even Ferguson for the TE spot and move Lewis. So it goes...They should secure Herbig this year as a rush guy. They have successively whiffed on TjWatt, T.J. Edwards, Van Ginkle, Sanborn,as Badger LBs.

"Rhyan is a quality NFL prospect with an unbalanced skillset. He could well be the strongest most dominating run blocker in the entire offensive line class, he however is only average in pass protection and is limited somewhat by far from ideal length.
We see Rhyan as a second or third-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft who will likely be an ideal fit with a run-first pro team."

Unless Rhyan was juicing in college, he still has an opportunity as his college resume was very good. So was his HS career and was highly recruited. I am hoping the substance abuse was just a stupid mistake...a big stupid mistake.

A four-star tackle in the 2019 recruiting class, Rhyan was one of the nation’s best OL prospects. Rhyan was also the 134th-best overall prospect. He had offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon, and USC.

A few scouts had him rated a first rounder. Most saw him a Day 2 or early day 3 selection.

He was a nasty play to whistle lineman and a mauler at UCLA in their zone run game. Solid on pass pro too. So I can see why Gutey and his team drafted him. If they didn't, Rhyan was going to get drafted soon after.

He was considered a relatively safe pick, but now he has stumbled into the boom/bust category. He has a year to show which one he is. Long term starter, productive back up, or floating from team to team on Practice Squads until his phone stops ringing.

Rhyan was a LT at UCLA that handled many pass rushers that were drafted in the 1st round. He was always going to be a guard in the NFL, but never saw him as a bust.
What happened? I have no idea. I suspect it’s a mental issue verses a physical one. I’m more than a little concerned because the coaching staff seems to have given up on him. They never mention him at all. It’s like he isn’t even on their roster. Two reasons for that, obviously the main reason would be they think he is a bust. The other would be to ignore him and try to light a fire under him and see if he has any self motivation characteristics. The latter reason if it works, would help him throughout his life.
I was sure he could replace some of the Packer’s more marginal interior linemen, but he just hasn’t done it yet. And maybe he can’t and will find another line of work like rassling.
Just MHO.

Hey Handsback. I get it. It’s very easy to go there, but, we’ve seen nothing with which to even form an opinion.

I took note of his production facing some of the best in the West too, starting for 3 years at UCLA. I’m a PAC 12 guy. ASU!!! I see a lot of PAC 12 teams every year. Your point is a really good one. Rhyan is unorthodox, and unlike any successful LT in his play style. The question has always been, will it translate to the NFL?

He’s not a bust yet, just like he’s not an R3 steal.

We’re just going to have to be patient like a funky monk with Sean Rhyan, and see what he brings to GB.

It hasn’t been a good start that’s for sure, but there’s a lotta ballgame left!

Who knows. As has been said, he seems to have been impeccable in college. Ironically, that makes it more conceivable than less that he could have been organized enough to pull something off and just got caught out by the change in system.

But that’s just a general observation. We, to my knowledge, have no idea what he took or when he was caught or any back story at all. I am not saying that did happen.

The only thing that will resolve this is what he does in the field, starting in the off season. If he’s in the right track, he will have been busting his butt in the gym at least and raring to atone.

One point I do like about Rhyan is he’s an ex elite youth rugby player who was on the US Olympic track. This kid isn’t afraid to get physical and welcomes contact. He brings attitude.

CW,
He was routinely beaten in one-on-one drills in camp like a drum. Was it from lack of power/strength, foot speed, and/or technique? The first & last should not be a significant problem for a 21-year old to overcome if the desire is there. The middle problem if the issue now that would be the concern.

Im not, and was not, a proponent of Rhyan before the draft, so all I can tell you is, from post draft digging, that the consensus expert opinion was that, while very powerful in the lower body, he needs to add arm strength.

Tony Pauline was one of the less enamored with him, but is someone I do give some weight to: here’s his view:

“Positives: Durable left tackle prospect who quickly sets up off the snap, bends his knees, and keeps his feet moving. Stays square and makes outstanding use of angles. Out-positions and controls defenders with terrific body positioning. Displays blocking vision, picks up blitzes, and shows the ability to adjust and knock pass rushers from their angles of attack. Moves well on his feet and quickly gets to the second level.

Negatives: Must improve his ability blocking in motion. Lacks desired footwork off the edge. Struggles finishing blocks and does not get much movement run blocking.

Analysis: Rhyan flashed on the scene as a freshman and showed promise, yet he never elevated his game. He possesses an upside and looks as though he would be a good fit in a zone-blocking system despite his athletic testing numbers. I’d like to see Rhyan improve his strength at the point of attack and feel he is a solid developmental prospect who should be drafted in the late rounds.“

He was 320 Lbs in College. @21 reps on the Bench can be improved, if straight ahead punch is your concern. Vorhees pumping 30 @ the Combine. People are getting little hysterical about a guy just turning 22. The Pac-12 only played seven games in the Pandemic Year. The brain trust probably wants him inside to contain bull rushers and he can move with fluid footwork coming from a zone scheme. How did Lang develop? Yup. Not every college guy who played his entire career on the edge figures out how to play in a phone booth immediately, and if they were working him on the right side rather than the left (I don't remember where they were trying him), that reverses a lot of his technique, too.

As for the PEDs, those are mostly IQ tests. These players all know they're getting tested at the Combine and roughly what the clock is after that. Every one of these guys takes supplements. Every team has trainers whose job it is to make sure players know what they can and can't take. Most players have personal trainers or consults who help, too. Someone argued that maybe he'd been caught taking something to recover from an injury, but to my recollection, he didn't do a thing to fight the suspension.

One year hardly makes him a bust. Treat it as a red shirt year. I don't subscribe to the whole if you don't fall under the NFL parameters of the long-held measurements requirements for O-line, you can't play or be any good. I don't think those "RULES" apply anymore. At any position. The NFL is evolving all the time. You can't draft a ILB unless he is 6'3 250lbs. and can't be left-handed. Now they are 6'0 and 220 lbs. Or the QB position. Drafting a QB who didn't take snaps under center, or didn't have a classic throwing motion, or didn't play in a pro-style offense won't work. That basically describes Mahomes in a nutshell. He is kind of good and doesn't fit the "NFL MOLD".

Rhyan is like getting a high round compensation pick for us this year. He is a wild card for us. Rasheed Walker is too. I think they were both draft steals and they were red shirted last year. They weren't the reason we had a bad year last year and the good news is neither were injured. They start the year fresh and with a chance to surprise everyone. I usually have the expectation that anyone drafted in the first 3 rounds should be starting even if inexperienced. It didn't happen that way for Rhyan but it's stupid to think about giving up on him already. I see him at worst challenging to play this year and maybe being our LT next year is his ceiling.

I'm not a huge Lance Zierlein fan. Not a fan of unnamed sources either.

"I would let him work at tackle and then fail him inside if he couldn't do it, but I see him as a right tackle early in his career." -- Scout for AFC team

In an ideal world, Sean Rhyan has learned his lesson. Figured out hard work is his only recourse and shows up ready to take over at RT. If Rhyan could step in at RT this fall, it would be a Godsend. If he can't, I hope Walker or Jones can.

The one thing about not just packer fan board but all NFL fan boards they believe ever pick should become a hall of famer . I remember as a teenager the Great Ron Wolf who is much smarter than me or anyone else here saying " a successful draft is one in which you get 3 quality starters "

So I'm not sure what packer fans or any NFL fans are complaining about with especially draft picks not panning out.

Really couldn't care a less if the 1st 2nd and third flop unless that first is a top 10 pick vs the 4th 5th 6th or 7th turning into quality starters .

I think most people have become very adept at building cases on select data and omission to support just about any narrative they want to project.

Well, and they can jump on any draft simulator and make 6 trades, land twice as many picks as they started with, and, all of them are highly rated players, filling every single team need.

“Done! How fucking hard can this be?”

I’m especially good at last years draft and even more so ones older than that.

I still suck at last year's draft and am pretty iffy at 2021.

Oh, come on....Crack the starting five? First he has to show he is good enough to make the team! He played only one ST snap the entire season before getting suspended, so just making the roster amidst robust competition is going to be a challenge. Maybe there's hope for him, but he had better be clean and put on an impressive display during training camp and the preseason.

It seems Bleacher Report came the closest to a correct evaluation: 5th round "project".

He may be good, he may be a bust. I do not see any concrete evidence that strongly points either way given the positional change (and some iffy OL coaching generally). What he’s got to do is come out with his head on straight and show us what he is. As I said earlier, he’s essentially a bonus prove-it level draft pick with upside as far as I’m concerned now.

Wow, a lot of sorted wild speculation about Sean Rhyan being posted.

There's no indication he's a discipline issue.
There's no indication he's been shirking his responsibilities / coasting through practices.
There's no indication he's got crippling technique issues.
There's no indication he's not taking his job seriously.

All we know is he didn't get on the field in 2022 except for a single ST play and that he got caught taking a performance enhancing drugs.

Many scouting reports had him as a backup who could develop into a starter down the road. Considering he didn't strength test at the combine, and he only produced 21 bench reps at his pro day.. It's most likely he needs to add strength and the Packers didn't want to put him in position to fail.

I think it's entirely possible the Packers never envisioned playing Rhyan in 2022. Probably considered him a project- get a year in the weight room and see what shakes out.

That's not any fun, though! We need to deem these kids as a bust or failure, based off one season in the league. What's even worse is some of these "packer fans" almost seem to be rooting against success of our own players? When all you have to offer is negativity, makes you wonder why you'd even want to be a "fan"...?

That’s too much patience. I, myself, give them about 30 minutes into their first practice, and then, with 100% certainty, declare them either a “first ballot hall of famer” or “possibly the worst bust in NFL history”.

I think that’s fair.

When I was a kid, when someone said “great minds think alike”, I always thought they were saying “grape mines think alike” and I wondered where the grape mines were. And how could grapes grow underground, without sunlight or heat?

I would not rely on a guy who gets himself suspended for PEDs as a rookie. I wouldn’t write him off either at 21. It’s up to him now, he just wasted the honeymoon typically accorded a third rounder.

The biggest thing he is missing is a beard to go with that hair.

This season will provide a second data point to see which way he is trending.

One random fact. The Packers picked the 2 OL with the highest verticals at the 2022 combine. That suggests explosiveness. The highest was Tom, the second highest was Rhyan. Coincidence or an insight into what they look for?

Getting beat out by depth guys is not a good sign. I would give him this season to show something, but it’s gotta happen now. You want to give reps and coaching to guys who are going to do something with it. He doesn’t have to make the pro bowl, he just needs to outcompete the bottom of the depth chart. If he can great, if he can’t buh-bye.

I played OT in college a long time ago. The jump from High School to College is mostly talent but also desire to perform. There were many individuals that had more talent than I but not the desire to do what is necessary to compete. Ryan had the tools. Does he have the desire. Other Good Packer Lineman started slow, Mike Wahl, Sitton etc... This year will determine if he has the heart to play. Hope he takes the 2nd year jump.
