It’s Time To Watch Watson And Doubs Together

No other combination of players is more important for the Green Bay Packers on Monday night than the rookie wide receiver duo formed by Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs. They were the center of the room rebuilding after the departure of Davante Adams, but they haven't played much together yet - and at all after Watson broke out. Now, the Packers have a 6% chance of making the playoffs, and it goes to 8% if they beat the Los Angeles Rams tonight. If the Packers lose, they will be virtually eliminated, with a 0.2% chance of getting a spot, according to Five Thirty Eight.

Watson and Doubs have played just 52 snaps at the same time for the Packers during the regular season. Their single-game highest mark is just 15 (twice, in week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings and in week 4 against the New England Patriots). By that time, however, Christian Watson hadn't been as explosive as he was in the last four games, so the passing offense was run through veteran receivers, and Doubs with sparse contributions. When Watson became this central force, Doubs had already suffered a high-ankle sprain.

“Those are certainly two guys that we’re excited about and definitely want to get out there just in terms of just their playmaking ability,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said. “I think you’ve seen the more these young guys play, the more confidence they’re getting, the better they’re going to play, and they’ve got some juice, too. I think that’s certainly been a noticeable difference the last couple games with Christian out there.”

This is the first time ever two Packers rookie wide receivers had at least 25 receptions and 300 receiving yards in the same season - Watson has 25 for 401, and Doubs has 31 for 314. Now, Doubs is finally healthy again and Watson is also fully healthy after handling a series of injury issues to start his career. Moreover, the matchup is favorable. The Los Angeles Rams defense is 28th in dropback EPA allowed through 14 weeks, ahead only of the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Las Vegas Raiders, and Chicago Bears.

Even if running the ball with Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon was the most effective way of producing for Green Bay early in the season, it was always clear that the offense wouldn't be efficient without a good passing game. With Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs as focal points of the unit, this is a realistic expectation.

It's not supposed to be quite as cold in GB tonight as I originally had thought it would be. Earlier when I checked it was supposed to be single digits Monday Night at K/O. Now it's supposed to be around 14 or so with little wind. It SOUNDS a little better at least without much wind (Says the man in Los Angeles CA).

Now I don't care what the Rams players might say, 14 degrees above is cold, REALLY cold to someone who thinks 40 degrees on a December morning is FREEZING! I've lived here for more than half my life now and when it's 40 I'm just miserable. 14 degrees? UGH!!

Can't wait to watch Ramsey cover Watson. Ramsey hasn't played up to his standards this year but I'd still imagine he'll draw Watson for much of the game. THIS is exactly where I want to see the "MLF Scheme". I want to see a few bunch formations tonight giving Watson OR Doubs a quick advantage and frankly I don't give a damn if Rodgers likes those or not...They WORK!

I'll temper my expectations for Doubs, let him have a game to get his legs under him. Then again he's probably chopping at the bit to get out there and play with his teammates. Regardless THIS is what we've all been waiting for.

Nick, if I remember correctly, you live in CA as do I. I grew up in Wisconsin and would ride my bike when the temperature got around 40 degrees just as most of the other kids in the area. We would go ice skating and play hockey on a frozen river and take off the jackets and play in shirts only and seemed to be just fine.

I still have season tickets from my family and go back to Green Bay for one or two games per year and the temperature at one of the more recent games was what should have been a pleasant 50 degrees for me. There is definitely something to that being acclimatized and I felt uncomfortable at the game with a fairly light jacket on.

I think the Rams are in the same boat as you I and when they get out on that field with temperatures below freezing (20 or lower), they will feel a whole lot more uncomfortable than I did at 50 with a jacket on. Most all of us here played football as youngsters and can still remember what it felt like to get a helmet in the hip. I hope our Packers defense can do the same to the Rams tonight with the cold temperatures making it more memorable for them.

The thing is, the other WR is bigger, and stronger, and still pretty fast. So somebody has to cover him, too.

In my experience, the best way to negate a great corner is to run at him.

Given our history this season, I'd give that ball to Jones a lot and we'd run right at Ramsey. It might be the ugliest game in the history of MNF, but it would probably get us a W. If we start trying to win this in the air, that could blow up in our face and then circle around and bite us in the ass, too.

Your comment triggered the thought that, if Love was starting tonight, then I’d be really interested in this game with Watson and Doubs for him to throw to. Hopefully Doubs is truly healthy. High ankle strains can slow a player for a while after return. The comment also applies to Toure. Get him out there and use him rather than Cobb or Lazard (definitely Watkins) or to spell Doubs if needed. Be aggressive with young talent generally.

As it is, this is as close to a should win as it can be, especially at home in the cold. The Rams aren’t good at all and are missing Donald as well as their best offensive weapons. They don’t have a ground game that’s showed up thus far and their vaunted run D is faced with adverse conditions tonight.

I have wanted to see Doubs, Watson, Toure play extensively all year....with Jordan Love at QB. This is the future of the GBP's! Forcing Watkins, Cobb & Lazard with an injured Rodgers to play is a significant contributing factor they didn't score many points & why the team has only won 5 games.

And how are we supposed to know if he never plays? Are they supposed to keep him on the bench for another 5 years till he looks like a first ballot hall of famer before he gets to play? There has to be a leap of faith involved cuz he will never reach his ceiling without actually going out and playing.

Forget the playoffs, now is the time for finding out who can play on this team. Two rookie WRs that show promise is great for the future. I would add a few other other players in position of weakness like Dline and Oline candidates.

Matt LaFleur said. “I think you’ve seen the more these young guys play, the more confidence they’re getting, the better they’re going to play,=.
Then why isn't Toure playing? Let's get all 3 out there. Toure should be playing the slot. And if you look at the teams with the winning records. They have best combinations of WRS. They're Not Old retreads. Their young guys who Flash!
We lost a trio. Adams, MVS and St. Brown. Nothing hurt Rodgers more. He's been asked to spin straw into gold since he became a MVP.
And Frankly they wasted his talent. By not getting him enough Offensive weapons. { If not better DC and coaches. }
The surprise of Doubs and Watson really isn't all in. All in isn't keeping retreads.
All in; is getting WRs who can take the top off a Defense. And the best teams have them now.
Look at who drafted the fastest Wrs early, and look what they've done. No DEFENSE can STOP them.
We need a great Trio. But we still need the "PRESSURE", of more than Watson and Doubs.

Don't forget Toure too. Be nice to have all three together on the field at once.

I've had a lot of experience working out in the cold (had to work outside till it was -20 not counting wind). I wish the players would wear sleaves. You burn up as much or more energy fighting cold as you do heat. By the end of cold games, it would be an advantage. Say what you want about Bud Grant, he knew. If you stand too close to a heater, while you resting to warm up, you get colder faster when you move away. Just keep your clothes dry and change socks and underclothes (at half time?). Keep hydrated. Your body uses moisture to stay warm sweating like in the heat.

Excellent advice T7. I have a question, but not entirely related. Why, no matter what the weather or temps read...why, would my dates give me the cold shoulder. After I leaned in for some sugar after the evening festivities, a cold front from out of no where showed up.

Why?

This has puzzled me for years...

I can't wait to see Watson and Doubs on the field together.

We haven't seen them on the field together much this year. It may take Doubs a few series to get back in the flow of it after missing several weeks. I could see them having Doubs on somewhat of a pitch count. But either way I can't wait to see these guys together. This is our future at WR. Why not start the future now!

Doubs was becoming our number 1 WR until he got hurt. He was becoming Rodgers trusted go to WR. Since he got hurt Watson has become that guy. But also since then Lazard has become a key player and Cobb has been a key contributor. We now go 4 WR strong. Watkins is a good blocking WR, but don't expect him to have a ton of playing time. I wouldn't mind seeing a package with Watson, Doubs and Toure on the field together.

The WR core should look much better. But our offense will have success through the run game and through the play action passes. Tonight could be a big night for Dillon. I think we will see some big plays from Doubs/Watson, but I would expect the majority of the offense to be going off the run game tonight.

The Rams have a good run D, but tonight should really challenge that. One real effect from the cold is that impacts take more out of defenders. Lead with Dillon, let him pound and see how they handle that as the game goes on and then let Jones use his speed. That should also set up play action too, if we stick with it. Success may not be immediate.

Also remember that Donald is out. That severely weakens their DL.

But yes I agree. I think we will see a healthy blend of the run/pass game. I think a quite a bit of play action will happen too.

Possibly, but I think generally real cold is harder for defenders than it is for offenses, particularly the guys in the trenches. The heated field and lack of wind/precipitation should mean that the ball will be a little slicker, but that aside the conditions should be good for receivers.

Everyone's like, "What about Toure?"

Toure probably has a hard time memorizing the 30+ hand signals that Rodgers uses that aren't officially taught or even a part of LaFleur's offense. That's probably why he doesn't see the field.

Could be why Amari Rodgers wasn't put on the field too often, either.

Pantz Burp, Opie, Nick, and the rest of you offensive NFL guru's.

Do you people ever get tired of whining and crying about Rodgers?

Do you buy your tissues in bulk?

HERE'S AN IDEA....You guys should contact the front office, call a meeting with LaFleur and Rodgers . Go up and discuss with them all their faults because they clearly don't have any idea what they're doing.
But maybe, with your insight and expertise at what they do, you can help them re-learn the game as you see it in your eyes, sitting on your couch.

Or watching the 22's and spotting a receiver that Rodgers missed and blasting him for it.
We need you guys to teach MLF and Rodgers, all the formations, motions, play calling that YOU want. Because you clearly know the game of football better than these two (no nothing) yahoo's.
You guys know exactly what's wrong and thus, can teach them how to fix it.
Do it for us, the fans.

PLEASE... spend some time with the coaches and Rodgers and show them the error of their ways.
For the good of Packer Nation!
.

I love it! I'm so tired of people whining that the guy who just won two MVPs in a row should step down for a guy who the front office must not have much faith in (or they wouldn't have signed Rodgers to a massive cap-crippling contract). Beware of what you ask for. I want to see Rodgers throwing those dimes to Watson, Doubs and Toure for the rest of this year and at least through next season. His arms strength, smarts, and accuracy are still there (though hampered by a thumb injury and brand new targets this year).

I mean, Rodgers is one of the most talented ever to play the position, and you're in love with a maybe. Imagine what GB would have looked like if the defense had played up to the expected talent level this year. We'd probably be squarely in place for a post season run, just as the younger skill players round into form. Yet everything that has gone wrong in the last 3 seasons is all Rodgers fault.

December 19, 2022 at 11:46 am

2020 was not Rodgers' fault, but what about 2021 when he threw to DA in double coverage when Lazard was wide open? What about when we only put up 10 points vs the 49ers when our defense held them to 2 field goals?

Don't get me wrong, Rodgers has brought greatness to Green Bay (4th SB Championship, many, many wins) and established them for over a decade as one of the NFL's top teams. I love watching him, especially seeing him torment division rivals. He is one of the greatest to play his position, and he will go down as a Packers legend.

However, I also believe that the good and success of the Packers team must be prioritized over that of one particular player. I love Rodgers, but the FO must know when it is time to move on. Rodgers, while injured, has shown some signs of age this year; look at the first 5 games; he missed some throws and threw 3 picks. Still great, but not legendary. As he ages, he likely won't be getting any better. Love, on the other hand, is cheaper and has more upside. Learning behind a HOF QB for 3 years has certainly helped, and we saw a trailer of the movie to come in Philly. I want to see more before the season is over.

Then there's draft capital. In a Rodgers trade, we could get some handsome draft capital from a team like the Jets, who are trying to contend now and just need a QB. In a Love trade, we would only get a 4th round pick at maximum likely because he is still an unknown to other teams; they've only seen a 2021 game (at KC) and 9 snaps vs the Eagles.

So, which QB should we go with? The aging, expensive one who won't be playing for much longer and probably will be on the decline in the next couple of years (who we could get some nice draft capital for), or the young, cheap one with more upside with many years of football yet to be played (and wouldn't yield much in a trade)? The answer seems obvious to me.

But don't take my word for it. Take the word of the Packers more than a decade ago, who shipped Brett Favre to the Jets to go with a young, unproven Aaron Rodgers. Sure, they could have gone the established route and tried to win now, but because they chose Rodgers (and didn't trade him away), not only did we win our 4th SB Championship (as opposed to Brett Favre, who lost in the NFCCSG), we also got over a decade more of HOF-caliber QB play. I am not saying that Jordan Love will be our next HOF QB, but I am saying that we should learn from the success of the past and at least give him a meaningful chance, as the FO did with Rodgers when he was young. Who knows? Maybe Love could be the 3rd in a row.

There is your game my friend.

AR's stats in the SF game: 69% completions, 225 yards. No TDs or INTS. Not a phenominal day but he definitely did not lose the game for us. That was ST's.

What do you mean 2020 wasnt his fault? The defense picked Brady off 3 times in the 2nd half and Rodgers could only turn it into 6 points. He had the ball in his hands multiple times in the 4th quarter. And what did he do with them? Back to back 3 n outs and a field goal. Classic Rodgers big game choke job.

Then what the hell are we talking about here? This is Titletown, not MVPtown. And your idol has not delivered a title in 12 fricken years despite having some damn good teams that were more than Super Bowl worthy. What part of this isnt sinking in? How many more losing seasons will it take before you drop this love affair with the overpaid diva? How many more coaches and teammates does he need to throw under the bus? How many more offseasons of Will he/Wont he do we have to endure? When will enough be enough? If any other player played as poorly or behaved as immaturely as Rodgers has this year, they would be run out of town and shunned forever. But because of his personal awards that count for absolutely nothing for the TEAM he gets a pass? Enough is enough.

I admire the ability to consistently obsess on WRs.

We’ve hit 175 yards rushing 5 times and are 4-1 in those games
We’ve been at 111 yards or fewer 8 times, and are 1-7 in those games.

We have no games where we had between 111 and 175. Feast or famine.

Yeah, this is all from pro-football-reference.com, a great site.

Our best rushing game of the year was at Buffalo, for 208 yards in a loss.
We got 207 in an overtime win against Dallas, and 199 in an overtime win against New England. And we did it to the Bears twice, getting 378 yards in two games.

We're not passing the ball well, period. We haven't had a 300 yard game, Rodgers has the lowest passer rating of his career. Our median passing yardage is 215 yards/game, and in the 6 games we passed for more than that, we were 2-4. There is only one significant area where the Packers passing game is above average: Touchdown passes. We have 23, and two more tonight would put is at about #6 in the league, and #2 in the NFC.

Clearly it is more than one thing. How many WRs have had injuries? Watson - yes, Watkins - yes, Doubs - yes, Cobb - yes, Lazard - yes. That's pretty much the top 5 going into the season. And GB hasn't built up the TE position, as Tonyan clearly has not bounced back. And that's not even talking about the revolving offensive line, and the mix of injuries there. So, it's not just Rodgers' thumb. He's tied for 10th in scoring, and his QB rating , % and yards per throw are all way down from his normals. Picks way up. But that's clearly not the only thing going on.

You're really pushing the envelope, Westy. These fans want projection, not realistic assessments.

Nice jannesb...
I think some fans aren't happy, if they aren't constantly crying about something.

I introduce to you...Aaron Rodgers

Lets egg his house!!!

Maybe make his dog disappear.

LambeauPlain...

Maybe he's playing for the same reason Favre played when he played with a broken thumb.

NOTE: Brett Favre was the Green Bay Packer QB before Rodgers.

So, giving guys without playing time a chance to play can have good results? Maybe someone should mention this in relation to Jordan Love and his lack of playing time. A second thought: could Love's play against the Eagles be similar to the Dallas game when Favre got injured, and Rodgers came in and did well, even though the team lost?

Well if you're using logic, one thing to consider is there were no hall of fame, 4 x MVPs playing head of Watson and Doubs. You can't say the same for Love.

So how long will the "muh 4 time mvp" excuse be used to keep Love on the bench? And why is everyone so hot and bothered by a subjective award voted on by media hacks anyways? MVP awards dont matter.

Not much longer. Love is ready and the people who run the organization know that....in fact, it's part of the plan..

It could be a sign of that potential, but it’s so small a sample as to be largely meaningless in isolation. That’s why we need to see more. Enough to possibly tease, not enough to base anything on.

You realize that we've seen more of Love in his first three years than we did of Rodgers in his first three years? And that by virtually every objective measure, Love has produced more?

I'm 100% confident that the personnel and coaching people in Green Bay know what they have. Love will be our starter next year. Rodgers will be traded after the deadline.

This would be ideal. The Packers would take a tough salary cap hit, but you have to pay for mistakes (not trading him to Denver for multiple picks/players). For some reason, though, it seems either Gutekunst or Murphy are enamored of Rodgers, and will not let go of him. Even though, at the time that the Packers chose Rodgers over Favre, Favre was hands down the better player.

I don't think it was that complicated. The Packers went all-in for one last dance with Rodgers and Adams, and we came up craps in the playoffs, so we peddled Adams.

Rodgers was the reigning MVP, and even if you figured he would decline a little, he's still an above average QB. So the question came down to whether we thought we'd be better off with Rodgers or Love, and chose Rodgers....for one more year.

He's not the MVP anymore, Love is ready, and now we'll move ahead. We went all in, and now we're going to have to say goodbye to some older, more expensive vets who are still good players, like Bakhtiari and Jones, and replace them with bargains.

Ricky it was a unilateral decision made by Murphy. His mandatory retirement age is coming up so he condemned this team's future in exchange for the fantasy of padding his own legacy with another super bowl on his way out the door. He wont have to deal with the fallout so he doesnt care.

I gave you a thumbsup for the positive vibe. I dont think that it will be as some have pointed out some sort of requirement to eat a bunch of his salary. I also dont think that if somebody is going to want him ( and he still has tread on those tires no matter what the AR haters are saying). and give up a bunch of picks. I would be happy just to get the trade done and that team have his whole salary. If you want a guy who can win you a Superbowl - a la what the Rams did - then that pays for itself. Now which team could anybody imagine is a QB short of being a contender? NOT Denver - NOT NYJ - Maybe the Giants - and maybe NOT I am thinking that it is the Raiders - with Carr's play - with their D and with a reuniting of Adams AR - in that Division - tough but several can make it to the dance. I think that AR will probably be back in GB and so will Love and Love will take over the next year after.

I don't think the Packers have the balls to trade Rodgers in 2023, and I don't know that they'll find a partner Rodgers agrees to be traded to..

I'd be happy for it, though.

Its time to see Watson and Doubs catching passes from Love. They are the future of this team and should be playing together right now.
