NFL SCOUTING REPORT:
Smack has a strong leg and can deliver beyond 50 yards at a high rate without having to drive balls with a lower trajectory. His repeatable process and consistent placement give him an above-average chance of making it in the league. -NFL.com
FIT WITH THE PACKERS:
Smack checks the two boxes the Packers would most care about in kickoff competitions: range and value. Brandon McManus remains under contract, but after going 6-of-14 from outside of 40 yards last season, the Packers clearly were looking for competition at this position. And for good reason. Smack has a proven kickoff record and has converted 10 of 13 field goals from beyon 50 yards in his college career. Consider him a camp leg who could potentially surpass the veteran. - Cheesehead TV Draft Guide
CAREER NOTES:
- Consistent ball-striker with good lift and placement.
- Made 77% (10 of 13) of his kicks from 50+ yards out.
- Capable as an emergency punter if needed.
- Good size with ability to cover and tackle on kickoffs.

COMMENTARY:
Let's face it, the Packers' kicker situation last year was ... not great. Trading UP for a kicker is a, well, decision for GM Brian Gutekunst, but it at least shows fans that he knows it was a bit of a ... poop-show last year with Brad McManus. No offense to Brad, but we could have used a bit more consistency. In a lot of moments. Looks like a three-way competition this summer for being the kicker in Green Bay, and may the best man win. Please.

I love it! And from an area I'm familiar with in my home state, too!
I realize some peoples' heads are exploding not only because we drafted a kicker, but traded up in the process as well. But that's okay! Accurate long-range kickers are now the norm in today's NFL; if Gute found a winner (and there's no reason to think not now that Bisaccia is not whispering in his ear), then the pick will be well worth it--as long as he proves he can adjust to the vagaries of a colder climate.
McManus is old, and his performance in the last playoff game was a major reason for our losing. So the welcome mat for him has been whisked away. Like another site said, you don't select kickers in the sixth round and expect to cut them.

Talk all the smack you want about this pick, but it's not like 1997 when the Packers drafted Brett Conway in the third round (one spot ahead of Mike Vrabel, btw) with visions of handing the reins to him. Competition is good.
I can roll with referring to the UDFAs and Uff Das if that's what it takes to keep the Scandinavians on CHTV happy

We don't know if this will pan out, but it seems like a very confident move by Gute, as if he was saying our team is well-stocked, this is the cherry on top, and we are DONE. I thought the draft aligned nicely with their needs. If there's one more player I wanted, it might have been a TE who can block. Maybe Gute wasn't seeing one in the 7th round, and when you think about it, which player would make a bigger difference in points scored: a blocking TE or a better kicker? Probably the kicker.
I was not among those who thought they needed to draft a backup QB, RB, WR, or LB. I thought they needed quality more than quantity, so the two trade-ups made sense.
