Widow Jane is also my favorite bourbon. I recently started making my Old fashions using Maraschino cherries and syrup along with Jack Rudy's Demerara syrup. Also discovered an Asbury Park ( yes, in NJ ) double barrel bourbon finished in used gin barrels. Thanks for the tips.
I'd expect nothing else from you, Bitter. LOl Monmouth county, I know, it has a bit of a different flavor bc of the gin barrel. Also, Jefferson aged in Cabernet barrels is a bourbon with a different flavor.
It is also correct that this is one thing that Wisconsin is dead wrong about. There's a reason why the classic, original Old Fashioned recipe was built on Bourbon.
Brandy is gross. Old Fashioneds strong flavor profile is enough to mask the putrid taste of brandy. That's about it. Bitters and sugar actually complement and open up the flavors of bourbon or even whiskey.
Brandy is a wonderful liquor. California brandy even. I normally mix it 50/50 with Cognac to dry it a bit, but it is a lovely flavor profile. Bitters and sugar improve a brandy in the same way it does a bourbon.
my issue with a classic wisconsin old-fashioned is it's made to resemble soda pop. you can craft make a brandy old fashioned and it's a marvelous thing. you can use brandy in a manhattan too, again with great effect.
However, while some believe it's because Wisconsinites drink so much in general (and, don't get me wrong, we do), I'm fairly certain the reason why Wisconsin is the world's largest consumer of Brandy is simply because the rest of the world knows better.
It's been 30 years since Brett Favre led the Packers to their 3rd Super Bowl championship. The 1996 team was one of the most dominating teams in the Super Bowl era.

Widow Jane is a fine bourbon, but Jesus you make a sweet old-fashioned. I'd gag on that.
Monmouth County Bourbon, who knew?

If you aren't already using Luxardo cherries, you need to invest in a jar immediately.
They aren't cheap, but they are night and day better than any other maraschino cherries out there.

Palettes vary, of course.
