One Big Difference Between the 2016 Packers and This Year’s Team
By GilMartin

Back in 2016, the Green Bay Packers got off to a disappointing start. A four-game, midseason losing streak had them at 4-6 and their playoff hopes seemed all but dead. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers boldly declared he thought the team could “run the table” and win the rest of their games. He backed up his words and the team did just that, winning their final six contests and clinching the NFC North crown. They advanced all the way to the NFC Championship Game before being blown out by the Atlanta Falcons.
This season, the Packers also got off to a very disappointing start. The team was just 4-8 after their Week 12 loss to the Eagles and looked like they were going to miss the playoffs and settle for a losing season after being the top seed in the NFC playoffs for the past two seasons.
The Packers have since won their last four games to even their record at 8-8. With a win at home Sunday night over the Detroit Lions, the Packers could clinch the final Wild Card spot in the NFC and return to the playoffs for the fourth straight year under head coach Matt LaFleur.
But there is one major difference between the 2016 Packers and this year’s team: they are not primarily relying on the play of their quarterback to carry them when they make their late season push.
In 2016, Rodgers was on fire late in the season. His play was by far the biggest catalyst for the team’s success. The future Hall of Famer threw 40 touchdown passes that season, the second highest total of his career at that point.
During the team’s six-game winning streak, Rodgers was on fire. He threw 15 touchdown passes and no interceptions in those six games including twice throwing four touchdown passes in a game. His quarterback rating during the streak was below 100 in a game only once and four times topped 110.
The Packers offense averaged nearly 31 points per game during the six-game winning streak and got better as the streak continued, surpassing 30 points in each of the season’s final four games.
But this year, Rodgers has not been the main catalyst of the team’s four-game winning streak. Don’t get me wrong, Rodgers has been OK, but he certainly has not been playing at or near an MVP level. He is still misfiring on some passes, probably due to the lingering effects of his broken thumb and is playing efficient but not spectacular football.
Rodgers has four touchdown passes and two interceptions during the four-game winning streak and has not thrown more than one TD pass in any of the four games. He has not thrown for more than 300 yards in any of last four contests and twice threw for less than 200 yards. His quarterback rating has never been above 95.7 and it was under 90 in two of the four games.
The Packers have found ways to win as a team without Rodgers having to play at an MVP level. Instead, the winning streak has been a combination of factors with different players or units stepping up at various times to help the team win football games.
Against Chicago, Christian Watson scored two touchdowns, one on a pass, one on an end around, and the defense forced three turnovers to help secure the win. A.J. Dillon also ran for 93 yards and a score to lead a rushing attack that gained 175 yards on the ground.
A week later the defense did the job, holding the Rams to 84 net yards passing for the entire game. The offense held the ball for 37:19 including the final 8:51 of the contest, more than doubling the traditional four-minute offense to close out games. Again, the running game was strong, gaining 138 yards including 90 by Aaron Jones. Rodgers was more of a game manager than a superstar.
Against the Dolphins, adjustments at halftime on defense led to three interceptions after the break and four turnovers overall. Keisean Nixon helped the Packers with a 93-yard kick return.
Nixon was again a big factor against Minnesota last week, scoring a touchdown, the first by a Packers kick returner since Randall Cobb did it in Week 1 of the 2011 season.
The Packers also shut down Justin Jefferson and held him to one catch for 15 yards all game. The pass rush got to Kirk Cousins and the running game clicked well led by Jones.
Right now, the Packers are finding other ways to win football games. Rodgers has been fine, but not spectacular.
The good news is that the Packers are no longer completely reliant on Rodgers to carry the team. Furthermore, if Rodgers does have a game or two left in him this season to play at an elite level, the Packers could beat any team in the league.
What does the future hold for Rodgers and the Packers? It’s tough to say but right now, all that matters is winning one more game to make the postseason and complete a remarkable season turnaround.

If we run the table and get into the Super Bowl this year, our defense is going to have to play the way many of us expected it to play prior to the start of the season.

The defense carried the playoff wins in 2010, especially Tramon.

They did, but they were also rated in the Top 5 thru the year. That said, lately they are playing like that.

The biggest difference that matters is the Lions are good and match up well against the Packers.
THIS is MLFs chance to really show his stuff and concoct a game plan that keeps the Lions from leveraging any matchup advantages.
A five game losing streak will be forgotten with a win. A loss will nullify a four game winning streak.
It’s a big game for reasons more than a playoff berth. MLF had a three year Aaron Rodgers carpet ride. That’s over.. his game planning looms large now.
As Lombardi said .. “If we don’t win, we’re gone!”

Hey, Stidhem just shot the deep ball to Devante ,double covered in the endzone. He went high for the rock and just missed pulling it in--that's what he does. Where are the church ladies?

I think they match up well in Detroit, I disagree about at Lambeau. Not even taking into consideration the grass field and cold weather, the Lions have only scored an average of 19 points away from Ford Field.

“… all that matters is winning one more game to make the postseason and complete a remarkable season turnaround.”
To be a 'remarkable' turn around, this team needs to reach at least the NFCCG as like the 2016 team used as comparison. Anything less is 'normal' for the many Packer teams since 2010-11 SB team, get in, and then kicked out by their own lack of volition. A carry-over from McCarthy era into the MLF years.
I'm hoping the Packers win, but I cannot ignore that the win streak is being overrated by ignoring what each opponent lacked and can be insinuated as being, though perhaps to a lesser degree than the obvious so-called one, 'frauds'.
Yes, the mantra, “You can only play who is on the schedule”, holds true enough, but ignoring what they offered at game time is paramount to keeping exaggerations in check. Something, I call reality, that too many easily toss aside, at the drop of a debatable win streak based on over blown narratives to instill a likely false hope than a truer expected ending.
With all my heart, Go Pack Go, but my brain says, not so fast, ride this train slow, and see if the wheels have truly stopped spinning and grab the tracks.

Most of this post seems to hinge on a definition of "remarkable."
Would it be remarkable if the Packers beat the Lions and got into the playoffs? It would definitely be something lots of people remark on, but I agree with Taryn that it wouldn't be remarkable.
I won't take my first sip of the Packers Kool-Aid until they make the playoffs and notch a win on the road, (likely v. the 49ers?) Then many people would make many comments and offer opinions and analysis, if not outright remarks. They might reference the 2010 Packers wild card run to the Super Bowl, for instance, which was remarkable.
One question to ponder is this: If the Packers beat the Lions, then go on the road and lose their first playoff game despite playing remarkably well, will they have left a mark? And could that mark be made again, thus earning the moniker "re-markable?"

Packers offense has been underachieving vs. even poor defenses in 2022. There's been no continuity from game to game.
I think the biggest blind spot most Packers fans have at this moment, as it relates to this article- they feel that it's "This team has found ways to win without AR putting the team on its back", when I believe the reality is more closely aligned to "This team loses when AR tries to do to much."
I consider these 2022/23 playoff push hopes fool's gold because I don't think Rodgers can help himself once he gets into the post season. In the biggest moment, he won't trust the team around him. He'll believe only he can win the game, and only in the most spectacular way possible- with a giant heave of his arm for a show-stopping deep TD. Rodgers gets tunnel vision and looks for glory when he should be keeping his eyes wide open and looking for the win.

I think this is greatly overplayed with the memory of not "seeing" Lazard last year versus the Niners a shortcut for laying blame on the only reason that the Packers did much of anything year after year. In looking at the various Packers postseason losses (and not even considering all AR did to get them there), last year's exit is the only one that I can pin a fair amount of blame on him...and if our STs weren't historically lousy, we still may have escaped.

Adams was interfered with, obvious, but no call. The O- line was a patchwork, hemorrhaging pressures and the ball must be out by 2.5-2.8 seconds. Lazard had his back to Rodgers at the time. The play call may have been better to have the #2 read crossing Rodgers face, not drifting to the left hash. No short read as per Ryan Grant who the hillbilly missed when he tossed the duck to Driver in the 2007 NFCCH in 2007. I attended both games.
If he held the ball for Lazard's break he would have been sacked. Big Dog gave up the ball Quarter One when the points must be scored and Momentum Gained. As they whine about no I in team, indeed, it is a Team game. A.Jones choked it up twice the prior year's CH Game. King dumb assed his coverage. That's the way it goes.

Philarod,
There's numerous examples of it over the years. Since you picked last year, I find it odd you seemingly didn't watch the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters. Rodgers not trusting his team mates and trying to do it on his own resulted in a completely stalled offense.

I share your concern Oppy. The Packers will win this game if Rodgers plays efficiently and within his current capabilities (the Lions aren't nearly as good away from Ford field). If Rodgers reverts to "hero ball" the Packers might not make the playoffs.
Even if the Packers win, do they have enough to take down San Francisco the following week? With Rodgers in decline, that looks like a very tough matchup.

Gil, you are correct. Packers finally do not depend on any single player. And that is something that gives me the hope to make a lot of noise if they will reach postseason.
I already mention that ACR played as one of the pieces of team, not as king or imperator who expects all to listen and obey what he demands. That is huge improvement. And the best attitude he can present. Let use his knowledge and experience to lead the team, not to rule over team.
That kind of attitude brings all players under one hat. They finally started to play as team (or units that make team as whole).
I have no problem of trying from time to time deep throws, that will keep opponent honest and open groud game possibilities (Packers has very good RB unit), and, consequently, make passing more easier and dangerous.
I pray to God that he finally accept that and, no, I do not think he is game manager, but he need to manage the game on offense and help defense and ST with that approach.

Seems like the article was written in an attempt to inspire hope. "Don't worry, we've found other ways to win!"
Well, OK, but this is definitely a glass half full sort of article, and there's no problem with that. But is the situation you describe an advantage or a disadvantage in comparison to 2016?
In 2016 people certainly could have said (and they did say), "Too bad we're not getting more out of Eddie Lacy/Ty Montgomery and the ground game. Good thing we have other ways to win with Aaron Rodgers being on fire."
Now it seems we're saying, "Too bad we're not getting more out of Aaron Rodgers and the passing game. Good thing we have other ways to win with Aaron Jones being on fire."
Which would you rather have... a QB on fire or someone else? Take 2016 and the red-hot quarterback 10 times out of 10.
"FInding other ways to win" in 2023 isn't so much a sign of hope as it is an admission that Rodgers has not been able to carry the team as he once did. It's more worrisome than hopeful.

We're so close to on the same page, Marpag.
Where we differ is that I've seen Rodgers' need to be the focal point of the offense as a net negative for the team, whereas you see his waning ability to be the focal point as the issue.
The worrisome issue is not that Rodgers isn't able to "carry the team as he once did", it's that he continues to attempt to carry an offense that doesn't need carrying, it just needs executed as intended.

When, or rather if, to make no offense to some, the other ways to win don't win, I'm sure those who bought that will attack Rodgers for not finding the way to win, as in the past. And the most recent 3 year past with MLF as HC.
Many wanted to move on from the arm of Rodgers, so don't blame him if the new ways to win fails. You got what you wanted, so, feel the blame with as much acceptance as you would if a success.

I remember a 2016 team go to the NFCC game and be about as flat as one could imagine. A FB putting the ball on the ground at the first instant of life in the game to extinguish the spark. It's how you finish and GB has not done it in 10 yrs. as a team. I like our OL finally as healthy as it has been in 3 years. I like the recent run game because of our OL health. I believe the key is our run game and Detroit will do everything possible to shut it down. If this happens to a large degree ML MUST use our RB's in the passing game...and I'm so tired of no RB passes to anyone as a fake run or option. It works...With our run game it should at least be in the play book especially with Watson to do the rest after the catch. Detroit is building a formidable team and have some very good pieces in the pass and run game. It's gonna be a dog fight. Let's hope AR earns his salary for a game this season. GPG

Superb article, Gil. I think that GB is a team nobody in the nfc wants to face right now. From last years epic meltdown, which was laid at Rodgers doorstep, it was really about a team that was imbalanced, and Shanahan leveraged GB's flaws.
GB when healthy, has one of the top O lines in football. U don't nurse a player like Bak along for 2 yrs unless he is the definitive O lineman, and he definitely is. With that stout O line, that running duo in the backfield, and now a special teams returner that actually gains chunks of real estate rather than turning the ball over or getting caught well behind the 25, look out for GB. The passing game is only half there, and that half being Rodgers. Aaron got caught in the receiver rebuild years, and was gracious to take the stats beating to help it evolve. It will be exciting, and that will be good enough. Realistically, as good as GB has been playing in the D and ST phases, they will have lots of trouble competing against another balanced club WITH an elite passing game.....

A beat up O line. Bhak out. Tonyan out. ZaDarious contributing for two or three plays.Dillon takes a shot in the thigh from Burks. This team is playoff healthy for the first time in two years. Speed at Wr for the first time since Lofton, I like the odds.

Aaron Rodgers is our most highly paid player at the most important position and he'll have to play well for us to win. In order for him to play well, it would be helpful to have blocking, and to have some people help him move the ball. If Rodgers plays well, we're gonna win. And by well, I mean he protects the ball, keeps the offense on the field, and puts some points on the board.
Rodgers doesn't have to carry the team with his arm, but it's vitally important he play well.

Rodgers does not need to carry the team
as he did in 2016. However Rodgers does need to play to his strengths. His needs to make good decisions, protect the football and move the sticks. Score points and keep the Lions offense off the field.
If the OL plays solidly our run game and our defense should be able to carry the day. The passing game should be play action with quick passes. Take deep shots strategically on good down and distance situations when we can still use 3rd and even 4th down to move the chains. Second and short inside Lions territory would be the time for a deep shot off of play action.
Build a lead and then pound away with the ground game.
STs can help win the field position battle.
The 2022 Packers are a different team from the 2016 team. The current team can win in every phase of the game. As long as the Packers don’t beat themselves they should have another game next week. Thanks, Since ‘61
