Top Priority: Upgrade the Pass Rush

History has a strange way of repeating itself.

Defensive Lines Wins Championships

As I was watching the conference chips this past weekend much to the dismay of fellow Packers fans wondering, "How are we not in the same position as Washington?," it became more clear that Green Bay is one impactful defensive edge rusher addition away from being elite. Unlike the Rams and the Commanders, the Packers were able to contain RB Saquon Barkley to 119 yards on 25 carries with an average of 4.8 yards per carry 0 touchdowns and his longest run being 17 yards. The other teams previously mentioned allowed a combined total of 323 yards on 41 carries with an average of 7.9 yards per carry 5 touchdowns and the longest run being 78 yards (LAR) and 60 yards (WAS) resulting in touchdowns. The Pack's stout run stopping defense lead by pro-bowler DE Rashan Gary has arrived. DC Jeff Hafley deserves his flowers. He was so good his first year as Green Bay's DC he even earned himself an interview for the New York Jets head coach vacancy. Granted, the Jets interviewed 15 other candidates, but the fact that Hafley got that attention already speaks volumes to the respect he has earned for improving the Packers' defense. Signing all-pro S Xavier Mckinney sure helped and drafting LB Edgerrin Cooper and S Javon Bullard were also two critical components to the rise of this defense.

Pass Rush Must Improve

We all witnessed how difficult it was for the pass rush this year to knock any QB with a strong offense out of rhythm. According to Fox Sports 2024 NFL defensive rankings, Green Bay statistically finished 5th in total defense allowing 99.4 rushing yards a game which was the 7th best in the NFL. They finished 3rd in takeaways and takeaway differential of +12 while finishing 6th in scoring defense allowing 19.9 points per game. Where did the Packers’ defense struggle the most? Applying QB pressure when it came to the passing defense which finished 13th allowing 215.2 yards per game and red zone defense which ranked 20th with a defense red zone touchdown rate average of 60% for opponents. The reality is that the Packers drafting 23rd means there will not be a defensive edge available that can help impact the team right now. The window of opportunity is open and bringing in a key piece at a current veteran pro bowl level seems like the more logical choice. We have seen this before.

History Repeats Itself

History has a strange way of repeating itself. This past Sunday was also the 28th anniversary of Super Bowl XXXI when Green Bay defeated New England 35-21. I came across a montage video of DE Reggie White in critical moments of the game pressuring QB Drew Bledsoe and wreaking havoc on the left side in what was always a dominating fashion. DE White finished with three total sacks setting a record for the most sacks in a Super Bowl game at that time. I was four years old with a mini cheesehead when this occurred so my memory is a bit hazy, but my dad has always preached that the Packers would not have won that Super Bowl or been as dominant in the 90s if it were not for the signing of DE White. For the right price and maybe  recruiting help from RB Josh Jacobs, Raiders DE Maxx Crosby I think would be a bolstering addition and exactly what the Packers need. He is a maniac pass rusher who is 7th in the league in sacks since 2020 with 49.5 and second on that list in total tackles with 197 only behind Pittsburgh's T.J. Watt. Plus, ask anyone from Raidernation and they will be the first to tell you how much of a stud DE Crosby is and how he is an ultimate team player. Chargers DE Khalil Mack would be a sneaky good pickup and has the potential to be an impactful veteran toward the end of his career similar to how DE Julius Peppers was for a couple seasons with the Pack. History repeats itself and if the Packers want to capitalize with at least a Super Bowl appearance during this window of opportunity that can close quickly, the writing is on the wall to bring a dominant pass rusher to Lambeau Field.

I'm sure this is a great article. It is too bad I can't read it. Black type on a dark green background is nuts.

LVN #13 overall in 2023, Wyatt #28 overall in 2022, Gary 12th overall in 2019, and re-signing 1st round pick Kenny Clark to a huge, new contract in 2023.

Improving the pass rush is imperative.

Wanting the pass rush to improve is one thing.

Expecting the pass rush to improve if the GM continues to do what he has been doing is foolish.

Just some miscellaneous comments:

Superstars are an essential component to winning championships no matter the sport. The Packers don't really have any. Jacobs and McKinney are stars, and Cooper seems like a budding star.

Games, let alone championships, can be won or lost by any unit/subunit on the field and the decisions by those on the sideline. Any weak spot will get exposed come playoff time.

"Windows of opportunity" exist only in the mind of the beholder. The Patriots had a window that lasted nearly two decades; the 49ers for a decade and a half and the Redskins for a decade with multiple QBs (both admittedly pre-salary cap). Team building is a layer by layer process, and right now it seems like the Packers are a couple of layers away, not one player.

Who's to say a somewhat impactful pass rusher can't be found in the first round? I don't really know, but it would help your chances if you don't select the greenest of prospects who need an eternity of development.

Everyone is salivating for the monster veteran pass rusher (which is understandable), but we had better make sure we have CBs are up to the task with the probable departures looming.

To me, the elephant in the room is still Jordan Love and the development of the passing game. If this was anything more than a sophomore slump or mildly injury-related, then we're getting ahead of our skis talking about championships. So this season will tell us a lot about the state of the coaching and organization: whether or not they're actually ascending... or treading water in a very competitive division.

Draft and develop only works if the person drafting knows what they're doing and if you have a strong coaching "staff" to develop them.
IMO - We have a B to B+ drafter and a C to B coaching. Our new DC skews this for me anyway. Otherwise, it's just a C or C- for me. What does this all mean? The hell if I know. :)

A couple of points of agreement, especially on getting CBs over a pass rusher.

I do think Windows exists, because teams are built around the QB, and the QB has a window. Then, within that window, you have other constraints like contracts and injuries. So you do what you can to maximize your window and then reload with some different people.

I agree that Jordan Love is going to have to play better. We can't win playoff games with 10 points, and we can't have multiple turnovers and expect to win against good teams. Perhaps, now with Watson not available, the Packers will have to throw more to the TEs and RBs and get some easier completions, which would raise Love's % and make it easier for him to take care of the ball.

I also would like to see the Packers call a few runs for Love, just so the defense remembers he can. Many of the best offenses in the league have QBs that can run, like Hurts and Daniels and Mahomes and Allen, and although I don't think Love is a great runner or anything, I think that a few simple designed scrambles would be helpful.

"I also would like to see the Packers call a few runs for Love, just so the defense remembers he can."

I've always been a fan of moving the pocket, making defenders play on the move and chase (i.e. think), and allowing your playmakers to work from that.

I'd argue this isn't an "either-or" situation, but rather a "yes-and" situation...how they add playable guys (emphasis on playable) isn't as important to me.

Yes. It would help us score more than 10 points.

This is like Groundhog Day. Every year, our season ends with a weak offensive performance and we talk about how the real need is on defense. 10 points with Rodgers, 16 points with Rodgers, 21 points with Love, 10 points with Love. But yeah, let's get a superduper pass rusher.....

Who’s in charge of layout on this website? I haven’t read this article yet because I can’t. Small black letters on a medium-dark green page? I’ll try it on my iPad, zoom in and scroll it side to side I guess.

Never have we seen anything like this before. A one off? An editor can fix it?

I usually find the comments more enlightening anyway.

I have seen this before, temporarily. Posting errors, if I recall. Perhaps it’s not fixed because of a Sunday posting outside our season?

Pass rush, pass rush, pass rush! If you can affect the passer or better yet get him on the ground, the rest of the D will magically be a lot better.

I grew tired of the "Clay Matthews plus some guys" era of pass rushing and fear that's how it's become with Rashan Gary. They don't grow on trees, but Gutey may need to swing big to acquire another top shelf pass rusher.

I really don't expect an edge to be drafted high. That would be admitting a mistake in the drafting of Van Ness. Unless they were to move LVN inside as a situational rusher, which may fit his skill set best.

You can never have enough pass rush. With outside players having contracts coming up--Enagbare (who played well this year) is up for a new deal after 2025, and Cox and Mosby are both on year-to-year contracts--and with inside-outside flexibility on passing downs, adding a speed rusher if one falls seems to be a good idea. A productive inside rusher would do wonders for the outside rush, too.

There are always productive guys who surface on day two (or even day 3) of the draft, and they make reasonable special teamers. Churn, baby, churn.
