Packers 20, Bears 19: Game Balls / Lame Calls
Thoroughly outplayed, a fortunate Green Bay squad steals a win.

Could there be a more maddening NFL team than these Green Bay Packers?
Not since beating Arizona in week 6 have the Packers dominated an inferior opponent. Not since a month ago had the Chicago Bears scored a touchdown against anyone. And not since the War of 1812 had the Packers lost to the Bears. Yet coming out of their bye week on Sunday, the Packers needed another Houdini act, slipping out of the Bears’ claws, 20-19, on the strength of Karl Brooks tipping a would-be winning field goal in the final seconds of a game the Packers had no business surviving.
With the exception of passing yards — thanks solely to a couple of explosive plays — Chicago outplayed Green Bay by every statistical measure that matters: Time of possession 36:21 to 23:39; total plays 68-43; rushing yards 179-106; turnovers 0-1. But those numbers don’t tell the full story of an offense that has mysteriously abandoned its early-season creativity and a defense that is more bend-and-sometimes-break than the aggressive, solid tackling, play-with-hair-on-fire operation Jeff Hafley promised.
Sure, the Earth is still on its axis: The Bears found another way to lose, while this year’s Packers once again played to the level of their competition but somehow pulled out a W after a needlessly close shave. The question is, how sustainable is this? Or, as Vince Lombardi asked those many decades ago: What the hell is going on around here?
GAME BALLS
Christian Watson — Not only is he getting separation, he’s making crazy catches. His acrobatic reception between two safeties on the Packers’ third drive was on a ball Jordan Love probably should not have thrown, but Watson is showing himself to be more than just a go-ball specialist. Then, in the fourth quarter with the Packers needing a touchdown, a wide-open Watson made a spectacular diving catch of an imperfect pass, got up, and turned it into a 60-yard play that set Green Bay up to score. 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈
Josh Jacobs — Once again, Jacobs put the team on his back in what was obviously a game-plan built around the run. Jacobs carried 18 times for 76 yards, but caught four passes for 58 as he was targeted more than any receiver. 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈
Karl Brooks — Many, including me, predicted #94 would take a big leap forward on defense in his second season, but it’s been a quiet campaign so far. He didn’t play many snaps on D Sunday, but no one cares. As Cairo Santos kicked what was certain to be the dagger to end the game, Brooks found a small opening in the scrum, leaped high and got a finger on the kick, which fell short. 🏈 🏈 🏈 🏈
UNSUNG HERO
Brenton Cox — Not many heroes of any kind in this one besides Brooks, but DE Cox certainly took advantage of the trade that sent Preston Smith to Pittsburgh. Cox, an undrafted free agent signed last year, had three tackles, two for losses and one sack that disrupted a Chicago drive. He might lack Lukas Van Ness’ speed, but based on this game Cox looks to be the more impactful player. Here's hoping we see more of him.
LAME CALLS
Jeff Hafley — To be fair, Hafley continues to deal with a thin, injury-plagued cornerback room that the front office has done nothing to address. His scheme relies on corners who can hold up in man coverage, while deploying a talented safety group to move around the field in ways designed to cause confusion for opposing quarterbacks. So far, Jaire Alexander is regularly unavailable, Eric Stokes is mediocre and Carrington Valentine’s ceiling is as a backup.
What hasn’t materialized is the relentless QB pressure that is supposed to enable the scheme to work. It’s beyond puzzling why Hafley dials up so little extra pressure until it’s almost too late in games. Meanwhile, the Packers rank 29th is pass-rush win rate and 14th in rushing yards allowed. Against the Bears, the defense looked like Joe Barry had returned, as Chicago went three for three on 4th down conversions and nine for 16 on third down. Receivers were constantly open in the flat. The Packers continue to lack answers against running quarterbacks, as Caleb Williams shredded Green Bay for 70 yards on nine carries. Perhaps most disturbingly, the defense often tackled poorly and lacked intensity, leading Quay Walker to call a team meeting on the sideline at one point. (Walker himself remains more of a play follower than a play maker.) The sad fact remains that without takeaways, this defense is below average.
Matt LaFleur — Clearly, LaFleur looked at the film and saw a Chicago team that is better against the pass than the run, and he schemed accordingly. But gone over the past few games is much of the motion and misdirection we saw early in the season, particularly when Malik Willis was playing and winning. It’s bizarre. Gone, too, apparently, is throwing on first down. Meanwhile, Tucker Kraft seems to be blocking nearly full time, and the bevy of talented wideouts were targeted sparingly. This made more sense when Jordan Love’s mobility was limited, but that no longer seems to be the case. A key feature of last year’s second-half run to the playoffs was Love running, either by design, booting out or scrambling. That, too, seems to be a thing of the past. As head coach, LaFleur is responsible for using the bye week to fix ongoing problems in all three phases. None of that was in evidence against the Bears. Also concerning was his game management in a couple of cases, including a bad late challenge that cost a time out, passing up three points midway through the fourth quarter, and calling a terrible run play to try to get a two-point conversion. The team’s red-zone struggles also continue.
FINAL WHISTLES
The Packers are 7-3 and solidly in wild-card berth contention, which is nothing short of miraculous. It’s testament to a talented roster, good overall coaching and no small amount of luck. But Green Bay has yet to resemble the team, or deploy the scheme, that enabled last year’s dominant second-half run. If they don’t start doing so, there will be no deep run this year. San Francisco, Detroit and Minnesota are still to come, and the rest of the schedule is no gimme. Lafleur, clearly frustrated by the team’s struggles, has to inject aggression and creativity once again. GPG.

Exactly! My only criticism is that sometimes you can be too aggressive. Perfect example is going for it in the red zone on 4th and 6. We literally threw away three points! We are not Detroit. Philadelphia or Kansas City on 4th and short.
Secondly, should we consider using Malik on a few plays; much like some teams have done successfully in the past? Nothing against Love, but Malik has some extraordinary mobility that need not be wasted. It is better than a run up the middle on 4th and six in the red zone.

I was looking for them to kick the field goal but I am not sure if that would have been the best decision. They were down by 5 and a field goal would mean they would be down by 2. If the Bears score a TD and an extra point they are up by 9 or two possessions.
I wonder if MLFs decision to kick the field goal when down by 5 years ago with Rodgers factored into his decision.

Hmmmm... There was like 14 minutes left in the 4th quarter or something like that. 4th and goal from the 6 or a FG?
The FG should have been a no brainer!

"Perfect example is going for it in the red zone on 4th and 6. We literally threw away three points!"
I had no problem going for it there. If we don't get it the Bears are pinned back. (which is what happened). If we kick the FG we are down by 2, and likely give them the ball at the 30. They don't need much to get into FG range again and go up by 5 again. They moved the ball but eventually punted. it actually worked out pretty well for us.
"Secondly, should we consider using Malik on a few plays; much like some teams have done successfully in the past?"
I'd love to see this.

I'm with ya Cold. MLF did an awful job yesterday - probably the worst coaching I've seen from him since he came to GB. (OK, that SF playoff game with Rodgers throwing 4 straight incompletions after a 1st and goal is right there too.)
Even so, I'm nowhere near saying MLF is the biggest problem the Packers have. But yesterday, and while there is plenty of blame to go around, MLF is responsible for an awful game plan and terrible decision making. Hafley is in the same boat as MLF.
Pulling out a W they certainly didn't deserve is fine. As MLF said, never apologize for a W. But if the Packers don't up their game on D and better game planning, this will be a short season, wild card berth or not.

"Pulling out a W they certainly didn't deserve is fine."
Why did the Packers not deserve to win? It's not like the refs made a call that gave them the game.
The blocked FG was the result of LaFleur and Bisaccia identifying a blocking flaw on the bares FG unit during the week and coached into it...they expected they would get a block during the game. They did. The block was planned, executed, and deserved.
Did the bares deserve to lose? Yes they did.

I'm with you, LP. We averaged 15 yards per passing ATTEMPT!! One turnover, 3 penalties We held Chicago under 20. We blocked a FG. And with the game on the line, our offense drove down the field and scored the winning points in the 4th quarter.
Why didn't we deserve this win?

...and, with a mere 7 possessions for the entire game, against the NFL's #1 ranked scoring defense.
Only 2 teams scored more points against CHI than the Packers 20 this season. Colts, 21 and Cards, 29.
Yeah, I want utopia too, but I understand that the ball... it's oblong, and that other team gets paid to play as well. Great teams win while not playing their best football. Vince Lombardi knew all about that.
I don't disparage fans who want more, because I do too. The best part of this is we know this team can play better, and now is the best time for them to do so. If this Packers team gets lit for these next 7 games and wins out, or comes close to, they would likely be the hottest team entering the playoffs, in a very tough division. Plus, the new D was going to take some time to develop.
Youngest team in the NFL.
We all know there is more, way more ceiling for this young team to grow into, and GB's remaining games could be very fun to watch moving forward.

"MLF did an awful job yesterday - probably the worst coaching I've seen from him since he came to GB."
What was so awful from him? To me it was 2-3 playcalls that were bad. The Reed jet sweep, The 2nd and goal run. And the 2 point conversion. The rest is about execution.
They moved the ball every drive but one. The one drive they didn't move the ball on was a dropped 3rd down pass that would have been a first down.
These are the drives by the Packers -
-8 plays 70 yards - TD
-5 plays 18 yards - (dropped 3rd down) Punt
-12 plays 61 yards - Interception
- 6 plays 65 yards - TD
- 7 plays 75 yards - Turnover on downs (at the 2)
- 4 plays 78 yards - TD
The offense moved the ball every drive but 1. They got down to the redzone 5 times and came away with 3 TD's. 1 interception and 1 turnover on downs.
"Pulling out a W they certainly didn't deserve is fine."
I don't get this narrative. They won the game. Plain and simple. The Bears didn't do anything more to deserve the win. Its not like the Refs changed the outcome of the game. I mean you could say they helped the Bears more then anything. That penalty on McKinney was horrible. And how do they miss that false start. Should have been 2nd and 12/13, instead they get a first down, because everyone on GB was waiting for a whistle. They essentially gave them a first drive.

This game is a good example of why there is no statistical significance between controlling the clock and winning the game. The Packers controlled the game and they still won by luck. They should have lost this game. If Brooks does not get a finger on that kick it would be a good field goal. The key to winning is to take every opportunity to score on offense. The Packers did not do that yesterday. Yes they did enough to stay in the game but they are still making mistakes that a championship team does not make. They have many weapons but it seems like they do not use all of them.

I felt the game turned on the series Love threw the pick. On first down Jacobs goes up the middle for 9, 2nd and 1 at the 5, and what do we do? MLF I think calls a pass, why? We get illegal man downfield, move back 5 and run Reed wide and lose a couple more. Play calling I just don't understand. 3rd down and we have to pass and Love sails it. That series completely changed the momentum to the bares.

So much outrage here that Jonathan didn't even bother to mention how our QB played, which is actually kind of important. I'm happy to report that our QB played well!
While this was not the blowout win that so many fans had convinced themselves was to be expected, it is quite a stretch to say that the Packers were thoroughly outplayed. It was even-steven, which was reflected in the score. The Bears successfully played ball control, which is why they dominated time of possession and number of plays. However, they only gained 25 more yards than the Packers did. The Packers averaged 8.5 yards per play, while the Bears averaged 5.8 yards per play. The Packers outclassed them on special teams, with their only punt pinning the Bears at their 5-yard line, a nice punt return by Jayden Reed, and a game-winning blocked field goal by Karl Brooks. The Packers had only 3 penalties for 25 yards (one of which was total BS) while the Bears had 7 penalties for 50 yards. The Packers had 3 sacks, and the Bears had only one. The Packers beat them fair and square. They did not benefit from bad calls or any other random factors.

Based on what, Greg? This? Love finished the day 13/17 for 261 yards, 1 TD, and 1 pick. Good enough for a 113.0 rating. Oh, right...that.
STs were not just complementary, they literally "tipped" the scales. I read LaFleur and Bisaccia identified a blocking flaw in the bears FG unit and believed they would block at least one kick. That's good coaching.
Good analysis Greg... to remind us the Packers did find a way to win on the road. In the parity party of the NFL, with 10 of 16 NFC teams sporting a .500 record or better, 7-3 is soooo much better than 6-4.

At least for me I got out of this game who Love is and I think - what we dont see in practice, is what has shaped this game plan of LeFlowers. Were run run pass for a reason and its because Love cant read a defense and is Mr Interception.
He's made poor decisions all year, threw into coverage, leads the league in interceptions, was an interception machine in college with 17 his senior year and that's twelve game season.
Last year at the end he was a fluke. Shocked me based on his college performance and lack of nfl playing time but the real Love has emerged. He aint too bright.
I would not be shocked to see this team go on a five game skid. We almost lost yesterday to a not very good bears team. Good news if yesterday was one of Williams better days the bears are in trouble for years to come, the guy aint that good.

GAME BALLS
Christian Watson —
He definitely deserves a game ball. If anyone questions who our number 1 WR is I think you can look at Watson and call him 1A for us. 1B is Reed. But Watson shows what he can do when given the opportunity. They need to go to him a lot more! That diving catch was a thing of beauty.
Josh Jacobs —
Jacobs definitely deserves a game ball. He is just the hardnose runner that we need. We haven't had a RB like him in a long time. Someone that can run with power and make people miss. I love Jones and do miss him. But, Jacobs is a complete RB and he was worth every penny they gave him.
Karl Brooks —
I don't care if he did anything the rest of the game. He gets a game ball for winning us the game by blocking the kick. I love Brooks too. I want to see him get more opportunities.
Brenton Cox —
I moved Cox to the game ball category. He made an impact almost immediately. Was he perfect, no. Did he have some plays where he wasn't blocked and he made a play. Yes. But the key was he made the play. He imo gets a game ball because for the first time in GB he got a real shot and he capitalized on it. He was credited with 3 tackles. 1 being a sack and the other 2 were tackles for a loss. He also had 2 QB hits.
UNSUNG HERO
Daniel Whelan -
He had the one tremendous punt that finished at the 5. Had Bellantine not stopped it at the 5, it probably was going to the 1-2. That was a great punt. But that isn't why he is the unsung hero. I don't know if anyone noticed, but on one of the extra points the snap was on the ground and Whelan was able to pick it up and get it set. The Packers won by 1 point. If not for that snap being picked up they would be tied at the end of the game (if everything plays as normal).
LAME CALLS
Redzone offense -
Packers were 3-5 in the redzone. They had one turnover, and another turnover on downs. They got down the field every possession but 1. But when they got to the redzone they bogged down. They have to find ways to score TD's in the redzone. I think one thing they need to do down there more is to find Watson and Kraft. They are 2 of the biggest targets. Find a way to get them the ball whether its 1 on 1 or something.
Refs -
How do you miss the RB false starting? HOW? Crap like that I want them to be able to challenge that crap.
FINAL WHISTLES
I have seen so many complaining about the defense. Yes they weren't great. But lets give the Bears some props here. Even as much as it pains me. But the offense was nothing like they have seen so far. In a week they changed the offense completely. The defense said they were not expecting to see him scrambling and running like that. So they had to make an adjustment.
I see that Hafley was in the lame call category. but what is he supposed to do? the front 4 is not getting a rush. The CB's are not good. The blitzes didn't work. At some point we need to stop blaming the coaches and blame the players.
One major thing that I think got cleaned up big time is the penalties. The one on McKinney was a joke. But they cleaned that up big time. They had 3 for 25 yards. Way better!
No matter if we win by 1 or 80, we WON!!! We beat the Bears!
We are 7-3!
Lets enjoy some Victory Monday!

Wicks was largely absent. That helped. Watson stepped up, which is the Packers way. Although the offense seemed severely out of rhythm, disjointed really, Love played pretty well with one significant failure of execution. Jacobs keeps getting yards after contact (Wilson too if they let him). The D probably had its worst day and the STs and Bissacia earned their keep in this win.

I really don't know where people keep saying the offense was out of rhythm and LaFleur called a bad game. They had 1 punt and had long drives every other time. The redzone was a bit herky jerky. I get that. Some can be blamed on LaFleur. But at the same time, they moved the ball up and down the field all game.

It was a tonic after watching the Badgers again play a "fickle" game...losing to #1 Oregon with several chances to win only to keep punching themselves in the groin and find a way to lose.
Packers found a way to win. Many say the Team was "lucky" to win the game. Fair enough. So then it holds they were extremely "unlucky" to lose 3 games they could have won.
Luck is overrated. You make your own luck or lack thereof. The FG block was not luck...the bares FG blocking flaw was identified in game planning and exploited as drawn up.

I will say what irritated me the most about the Badgers game was the horrible chop block penalty on Walker. That eliminated a 1st down, and changed the game.
I am curious to see if firing Longo changes anything for them.
We can say we were lucky to win. But to be fair weren't the Vikings and Lions lucky to beat us? I don't care about luck. All that matters is who comes away with the W at the end.

I have faith that we will get the redzone figured out. Love is finally healthy, and lets give the Bears some props. They are the number 1 rated red zone defense. But our offense, I feel like with a healthy Love we will start seeing that figuring things out.
The pass rush does concern me. This game I felt like the defense was out of sync most of the game. We saw a lot of sloppiness from them. I feel like we have seen plenty of good stuff from them that I'm not worried about them as a whole. I think they will find ways to manufacture a rush.
What concerns me is in a big moment when we need the extra point or FG and we have a bad snap. There has been so much concern over the kicker and we do finally have that figured out. BUT, for this is the 2nd year in a row our snapper has had issues. And its only a matter of time that its going to cost us.

I will add a lame call. My prediction of the Packers covering the spread. Yes last week I saw unicorns and rainbows. We were playing a team on the decline that seemed to have little to offer on offense. I did not factor in that it was a rivalry game where they have not won in 10 games and they were playing at home. The cherry was the change of an OC. I should have expected enough of a change in the game plan to make the game interesting.
Oh well we learn.
Yes this team is extremely frustrating.

Bears were 4-1 at home and 0-4 on the road prior to yesterday's game with the Pack. Plus the Bears got both their starting offensive tackles back for this game. I was concerned this might be a tough one. Very happy with the win!

Something to always consider is that we can just throw out everything when playing the Bears. It never goes how anyone thinks it will go.
I do think the OC change made a bigger difference then a lot of people thought.

I try to stay even keel watching the games. This team expects to just show up and get a win, reading what is expected of them just doesn’t work, it has to be earned. The defense has to many holes in it. Q. Walker is extremely talented but lacks the mind set to show it. Unfortunately, K. Clark and Alexander look like the brutality of the game has caught up to them, sad to say.

Something is wrong when it's Detroit scoring a TD on their first 7 possessions, not the Packers. Maybe it says something about the Packers D holding them to 17 the last game. Is MLF trying to save wear on the tires?

As with my golf game, it is better to be lucky than good. Take the win and be grateful. Made the Bears look good.
The thing that I think I saw and can't get out of my head is an incident during the on-field celebration after the block. Coach LaFleur was hugging a player (Brooks) and Gary (52) pushed LaFleur with a fist to the chest. It was an abrupt "get the f___ out of here" push that seemed out of place for the scene. Did anyone else see thing or were my beers clouding my vision?

What should be sad and piss off a lot of you fans is the wasted fn first round picks Gutt did. Had he done his homework, had scouts who knew talent, avoided guys who were injury prone and werent too bright, he may have been able to put together a formindable team.
Alexander and Stokes, two totally wasted picks who have done nothing. Has Stokes in what five years even had an interception. Has Alexander ever tackled someone one on one? Is Clay the laziest line backer in football. All I see is him standing a round a lot watching others make tackles. Vand Ness? Gary showed up in the end for one big play, thats who he is and was at Mich, one big play guy and you think wow he is something. Ya you got that right he sure is.
Our two picks arent much better. Watson finally caught a tough pass. He finally got in the open without a db on his back, but the guy fell down actually. Reed and Doubs didnt go missing, Love was fixated on looking for Watson all game and not doing any progressions.
You guys will hate Love by the end of next year and will be screaming for Gutt to be replaced too.

You can tell Gary is cooking when the rusher on the opposite edge keeps getting through unblocked. That's who he was at Michigan

Alexander is a two-time All Pro and two time Pro Bowler, or did you forget?
When you're talking about Clay, do you mean Quay? Clay Matthews has been retired a few years.
I don't know a General Manager that hasn't had bad picks, even the Super Bowl champs. Ron Wolf's drafting record at Green Bay has some big bombs in it. He's in the Hall of Fame.
The Lions had the benefit of drafting top talent for many years and are now reaping the rewards. The Packers will do the same with fewer top end draft picks.
You sound like the Packers are 0-10 instead of 7-3. Take a deep breath, realize this is a young, talented team with hope for the future and look long term not short term.

I somewhat agree that Gutes 1st round picks aren't as successful as his later round picks. Not all 1st round picks are successful initially. Some take time. Some need the proper coaching/schemes to realize their pro talent level. But overall, I think he's built a fine young team given the salary cap hell he had to weather through..
I'd sure as hell take him over three quarters of the other GMs in this league!

I give some credit to the Bears. They played a very good game, and the offense may have found something to hang it's hat on. Hopefully, they can take a game from the Lions and Vikes. Their defense is legit.
Really disappointed with the offense in red zone. MLF admitted it, as he should have; but that pass call on 2nd and 1 was just brutal.
KC is my family's AFC team, and last week we were all in front of the TV on their last play yelling for a block and it came to be. Same scenario with the Pack this week. I told my daughter we're getting really good at this. LOL and GPG!

This was the bares playoff game.
The Lovie Smith directive remains an obsession for seasonal bare objectives: "just beat the Packers."
Wounded bears fight ferociously when backed into a corner. They did. Packers did not bring their A game and still found a way to keep it close and earn a W.

I was hopeful for a blocked FG because the Bears kicker hit that 53-yarder very low, and this one was from 46. When the ball was kicked, I thought I saw it go through the uprights. It took me a couple seconds to realize it had been blocked.

Longtimers here have heard this rant before: if the Packers defense shut down opponents all season and the team only scored a field goal each game, they would win the Super Bowl having scored 60 points all season. Statistically the worst offense in the league and yet the Super Bowl champs. So when you look only at stats to determine a winner vs. a loser keep in mind my example.
Stats are nice to fill time between games. But in reality(another rant) the NFL doesn't reward or penalize teams based on style points. Detroit beat Jacksonville by a mile but does that improve their chances of winning it all? No.

I'll take a sloppy win over a 'clean' victory any day.

Actually, they played their cleanest game yet. 3 penalties and one of those was bogus.

Red zone problems again. Pack was going up against the best red zone defense and did not assert themselves. That is typical of this team, they can't go up against the top tier whether that is a whole team or a top performing unit of a team.

The Packers scored 3 TDs in 5 red zone possessions, which I think is a little better than the league average. This was against the best red zone defense in the league.

Since Jeff Hafley got to Green Bay and all the way through training camp we heard about him coaching players to play aggressive, fast and free, with the caveat that an occasional explosive play might be allowed. When are we gonna see that? Is the defense playing it safe because the offense is inept and can’t score? I guess that’s complementary football?

@CD-I don't think he has the horses other than E. Williams, MacKinney, E Wilson and Bullard (@ times), to play
'fast and free'
Nixon plays a little too 'fast and free'-lol; Stokes, Walker, MacDuffie, LVN, Gary, Clark cannot or will not--Alexander is MIA, Valentine is rarely on the field.

Why doesn't someone, anyone, discipline or bench Rashan and Kenny? I'd prefer to rely on Brenton Cox and my grandmother.
The team has invested millions in these two and I consider both of them to be robbing the team. And, I was not going to jump up and down because Rashan finally came up with ONE sack @ the 11th hour. San Fran is right around the corner and I expect nothing to change.
Gute just cannot whiff on this upcoming draft re: DB's and DL's

The similarities between Gary and Clark are their recent and massive contracts. I feel somewhat the same about Alexander, but his constant injuries make this assessment less valid.
The other piece of uncertainty I have about Gary and Clark is the new 4-3 scheme. While I can envision more of an issue with Gary (like Preston Smith's latest comments), I am not sure if it would hinder Clark?
Maybe 2 or 3 of the above mentioned contracts should be closely evaluated by Gutes off season in terms of future cost vs benefits?

Make no mistake, the Bears have players…DJ Moore, Swift and Allen… against our makeshift secondary and a scrambling QB..and its not like the Bears have been getting blown out in games. The NFC north is more competitive than it has been in the past and division games usually mean more and they’re always tough regardless of record.
The mistakes…. early interception in the red area, Clock management in the final 4 min., passing game problem's.( could be bears corner talent… Im not sure what their talent is, packers route designs? was there not separation ? Oline allowed too much pressure? QB decision timing? who knows?Im not sure why TEs or double TEs weren’t deployed more…could be how the Bears have their D set up, could be one of the back up TEs were injured….who knows. Maybe kraft was used for blocking to make the run game more effective… I mean , could be a whole host of reasons.
Carl Brooks was getting massive pressure every time he was put in…even aside from the tipped ball. It was noticeable if you rewatch his snaps. He has flashed since he was drafted and I hope that trnd continues.

You are aware that we were 13-17 passing? How does that translate into "problems"? We averaged 15 yards per ATTEMPT. Love was sacked once and generally had no pressure.
IMO, protecting your QB, completing 75% of your attempts, for a 15 yards/attempt average, is a pretty good day.
To put two TEs in, either Reed, Doubs, or Watson has to come off the field.
Bitternotsour
November 18, 2024 at 10:29 am
Hmmm. Love was 8-of-8 for 185 yards when under pressure. He was 2-of-3 for 68 yards against the blitz and 6-of-6 for 182 yards and a touchdown on passes at least 10 yards downfield, including 2-of-2 on throws of 20-plus yards.
But he's apparently a problem as is the passing offense.

The narratives prevail. Our defense is improved, despite giving up more points. They had a bad day, despite holding an opponent under 20 again. Our run blocking is bad, despite the fact that our running game is good. Lafleur doesn't know what he's doing, Gutekunst doesn't know what he's doing.

Our Defense we are running .......DOES NOT HAVE THE RIGHT PERSONNEL TO DO IT......We need 2-DE's and a big bad ass DL, 2-better CB's and a ILB. Offense needs a healthy OL...stronger OC, Dynamic running back that is healthy and an Elite WR to show the pups the way. That's a lot of parts we're missing or are currently hurt. Not making a move on the cheap at the deadline to fix none of these means we will not be going deep in the playoffs without A LOT OF remembering how we played and coached last season. The first 4-5 picks in the draft need to be DE's and hog DL with power and top OC and buy a top 5 CB in FA as well as WR....The post season run has become a distant expectation for me....We have massively regressed from the post season last year without too much turnover. A.Jones moving on has been a big set-back. I love Jacobs, but we are missing a jitterbug RB badly.
GregC
November 18, 2024 at 12:40 pm
So our RB who is third in the league in yards isn't good enough?
PhantomII
November 18, 2024 at 02:13 pm
I would prefer both. A.Jones is faster and more elusive and I believe covered more warts of the poor game calling he was lightning and changed up the game with the ball in his hands. If Gute would have kept him another year YES I believe we would not look so bad on offense most of the time. Mainly our WR's are not running good routes and getting separation and I think since we are running Jacobs more, the WR's are blocking more and not putting more into their receiving routes most of the time.

November 18, 2024 at 12:43 pm
So the defense needs six new studs, in addition to the guys we brought in this year? Last year, we gave up 20.5 ppg, this year, we're giving up 21.3
At this point in the season, I think it's fair to say that our defense is different than last year, with different people, but not really any better. We're 10th overall in the league in scoring defense, pretty much the same as last year.
Also, the #3 rushing offense doesn't miss Jones.
PhantomII
November 18, 2024 at 02:16 pm
We're the #3 running offense because LAST YEARS DYNAMIC WR's have been running routes that suck ass and dropping catchable balls so we need to do something, so we are running the ball more with better OL blocking and a bigger RB.
PhantomII
November 18, 2024 at 02:28 pm
There is a minimal pass rush as is with 4 man front. CB1 is hurt...a lot. No pass rush and sketchy DB's are not a good mix. My eyes see a quick exit in the post season this season and a big mistake if all the WR potential and as good a TE as anyone has will be wasted if Gute does not fix the defense with better players in this scheme before we have to make hard decisions on all these offensive players. WR unit has regressed and so has JL because of it.
Need a better WR coaching routes and scouting other teams tendencies to win routes. I want to win a SB so I don't care about stats as much as I see poor execution on both sides of the ball EVERY GAME. Something I did not see as much of late last season in a different scheme.

All I can say again is this - It was a trap game and we played down to the Bears level. This is all on the coaching staff. Defensively we knew that the Bears new OC was going to get his QB going and that was by him running and we didnt organize our guys to get pressure on him and tackle him. We knew that we needed to score points but we still left too many out there and we still have not figured out what to do in the Red Zone and now Love seems paralyzed when down there and the Oline doesnt open any holes or get any push. Lafleur needs to figure this out and fast. And for all those who are saying that a win is a win - it needs to be more of a smack in the face. Face we played poorly all around and we should have lost but we got lucky. Just like the Lions did when they were not called for an obvious PI that game where Goff through 5 picks but they won. So what did they do - they came out the next game and smoked the Jags. Now we need to go into San Fran with a different mindset and beat the 49ers. It wont be an easy time but it is doable as they have lost 5 games and 3 at home. We wont get lucky against them but it just might be our game of the season.

One of the most impressive players yesterday was Edgerrin Cooper on kick off coverage. He is a beast and needs more snaps on defense. Quay Walker is athletic as can be but he is not cutting it as the "Green Dot" man in the middle. We can see it with our eyes and only hope that Hafley and Gutey see it too.

Lame - Defensive scheming this week. With so many sacks in previous games AND a new OC, it was very evident that CHI would (1) rely on getting the ball out of Williams hands quickly, and (2) rely on his legs when necessary. I find it hard to believe that Hadley didn't scheme for both? So, he shows us the Barry-esk soft zones on obvious passing downs? Really?
I understand that injuries to DBs/lack of talented CBs is an issue. But why not blitz more often, and early? I've lost a lot of faith in the Hadley decision now. And that's saying something given the Joe Barry era.
MLF - In 2 words, very confusing? Strange play calling that almost sunk us. So many examples of this, its not worth mentioning. Not COTY candidate yet.
Game balls- ALL of these young players. The individual efforts of these players- making great individual plays - seem to counter balance the "strange" coaching decisions.
Conclusion- Better, more realistic game planning by this coaching staff. They must present REALISTIC game plans to each game. Quicker adjustments wouldn't hurt either. Why wait for half time (or later) if your pass rush isn't getting pressure? GPG
