Packers 23 Lions 22: Game Balls & Lame Calls

It was far from pretty and not without some controversy but the Green Bay Packers exited their Monday Night Football game against the Detroit Lions one win richer.
After having the script flipped on them and seeing Detroit get an early lead, the Packers had to grit out the win, comeback style.
On to the night's best and worst.
Game Balls
Mason Crosby
Crosby had an absolutely abysmal game in Detroit last year and took full advantage of his chance to atone for it in this game. Crosby hit a game-winner as time expired after the offense burned the clock down.
It was a chip shot for the win but Crosby also hit two other field goals earlier on the night. In a game that featured way too much of the kickers, Crosby was the one left standing on the stage a winner.
Jamaal Williams
How much do the Packers miss this guy when he's not on the field? Williams made an immediate impact, scoring the Packers' first touchdown of the game. He ended the night with 104 rushing yards and four catches, one for a score.
After Aaron Jones had his struggles with a fumble and dropped touchdown pass, Williams stepped in and kept the ground game churning. It became a vital part of working the clock and extra kudos to Williams for unselfishly giving himself up near the goal line late in the game to burn more time off the clock. It set up a do-or-die kick to win the game with no time left for the Lions.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling
MVS only caught two passes but he had a big catch in tight coverage to get the Packers inside the red zone to start the fourth quarter. Unfortunately a Lions interception a few plays later thwarted the scoring drive but this was the type of catch and play that the Packers need out of their speedy wide out.
Valdes-Scantling missed a chunk of the game after suffering a knee injury earlier but he was able to return and make the huge catch.
Aaron Rodgers
Rodgers was very Rodgers-like in this game. As the Packers worked their way to overcoming the Detroit lead, Rodgers was keeping his teammates upbeat on the sideline and his demeanor seemed to suggest that he was confident he and his crew would get the job done.
Rodgers had a passer rating of 90 on the night via 283 passing yards and two touchdowns. The interception was 100% on receiver Darrius Shepherd.
Rodgers had some moments where he held onto the ball too long and got caught by the Lions pass rush, having to throw the ball away but those are things that are knowingly going to happen a few times per game. Take the good with the bad and Rodgers was a lot more good than bad in this one.
Preston Smith
1.5 sacks on the night and one of few to get solid pressure on Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. Once again, a Smith is getting a game ball for being an impact player. This week, it was Preston.
Allen Lazard
Five big catches late in the game and a touchdown to bring Green Bay within two in the fourth quarter. Lazard may be needed for quite some time as Davante Adams continues to heal and if the Packers will be without Allison for some time. Some nice swagger from the rookie who doesn't appear phased by the bright lights.
Lame Calls
Darrius Shepherd
Just a brutal night by Shepherd. His horribly-played punt return that resulted in a fumble and turnover was doomed from the beginning. Shepherd misjudged the ball and had to catch it moving backwards and did not signal for a fair catch. No surprise, the defender's helmet knocked the ball loose and it fell to the Lions. The Packers let go of their other returner, Tremon Smith, earlier in the day, paving the way for Darrius to handle those duties. Have to wonder if they're regretting that decision.
On the interception by Rodgers, Shepherd was in position to catch the ball and he had it in his hands but couldn't secure the ball. It bounced up to the Lions defender for an easy interception and long return.
Shepherd wasn't likely a big part of the game plan in this game but after losing MVS and Geronimo Allison for a good portion of the game, the rookie was thrust into bigger action. It was a night to forget for the preseason star.
Aaron Jones
Can't fumble the rock away and drop a touchdown pass and not end up here. The good news is that the Packers still got a win despite the miscues from their star back. He'll be doing great things for this team and making this performance a distant memory soon.
Others to mention:
- Pass defense to start the game was brutal
- Injuries keep piling up but this team keeps turning out W's
- If it was a "sell" by David Bakhtiari to draw the hands to the face flag late, he did a phenomenal job. I think it was just plain old hands to the face
- Booger McFarland needs to leave his emotions from his playing days out of the broadcast booth
- Run defense showed they might be able to keep it in check
- Aaron Jones took a big shot early in the game and have to wonder if that impacted him on the few gaffes he had
- This team is thin at wide receiver. We'll see what the next few days bring

Absolutely agree on the game balls to Lowery and Bulaga. Lowery played his best game of the season by far and helped solidify the Packers run defense to the point Detroit only gained about 50 yards on the ground. Made the Lions one dimensional.
Bulaga had another terrific game and has been the best Packer O-linemen this year.

Game Balls:
Mason Crosby - Not enough love went to Crosby last night. A lot of talk was about Stafford and his wife, but not much was said about Crosby and what he has been through. I was happy to see him get the GW FG!
Lazard - I absolutely loved hearing Rodgers after the game talking about Lazard. Hearing Rodgers was pushing to get Lazard to get in the game. Then when he does he absolutely delivers!
Rodgers - What can you say. He was without Adams for the 2nd game in a row. He then loses Allison (even though he wasn't particular good). He had guys dropping passes all game long.
Williams - Great to see him back! Seeing what Williams and Jones bring together we have some things working at RB now.
Alexander - He shut his WR's down all night long.
Lame Calls:
Shepherd - Essentially 2 turnovers by him cost the Packers a lot. His fumbled punt return allowed Lions to score a FG. Then the "interception" which bounces off his face mask prevented the Packers to get points.
Refs - All the national media and Lions fans want to talk about is the final hands to the face penalty that didn't allow the Lions to get the ball back. But there were a number of bad calls throughout the game. And the Lions benefitted from a TD which was is one? Not even the Refs agreed that it was.
The Refs gave the Packers a win - I have seen this all over twitter since last night. The refs didn't give the Packers anything. The Packers earned what they got. The Lions had plenty of opportunities to win the game. They were up 13-0 early. The had chances and could have been up 17-0. Also the Fans don't want to talk about how they had 12 men on the field on the 4th and 5 and gave the Packers a first down which gave them their first TD. That is a 4 point loss.
Notes -
I questioned if Jones had a concussion or something during the game. He never fumbles and after taking that bad hit not many plays later he fumbled.
Pettine made some adjustments and they pretty much shut down the Lions.
King struggled early then was good after.
The Run Defense was really, really good! This part hasn't been talked about enough!
I expect to see Gutey making a move at WR.

The Lions has less than 50 yards rushing by their RBs. The Pack had over 150!
If the receivers would have caught the balls that hit them in their hands, this game would not have been close.
I would like to thank the Lions for finding ways to lose and thanks goes to AR for finding a way to win.

Many here said in the off-season that when the dropoff from #1 to #2 WR is as big as it is for the Packers, you're playing with fire. So far, the Packers have weathered the storm, but they can't keep dodging bullets. We were all excited about the Kumerows, Shepherds, and Lazards--arguing in favor of 7 or even 8 WRs on the final cutdown--before the season started. Not seeing nearly that excitement now.
As much as I hate to say it, I think the WRs will need to lose a game for this team before BG makes a move.

The reason why I am expecting him to make a move is because Adams is likely to miss a few more weeks. Allison could be out this week. He has a chest injury too, which could keep him out longer? So we are down to 4 WR's. MVS also was banged up.
I think they sign someone.
And I think they need to draft more WR's higher next year. Need more talent there. I like the guys we have, but we need to upgrade.

Not sure King was wholly at fault on the two long completions. The first really looked like he expected safety help deep, but Redmond had bitten on the run fake and was out of position. The second long pass was more KIng's fault but the safety was late yet again.

Yeah I agree with you on it. I am not faulting him entirely, but the guy he was covering got deep twice.
Seemed like some changes were made and they cleaned that up.
Definitely seemed like a case of Pettine making adjustments

Packers opened with 3-4 with Redmond playing one high and combo matchup zone. King expected Redmond to have the over and he was the trail. Redmond bit (no, he got suckered on a classic.) moved up and left a void that Stafford hit. King played his responsibility, Redmond left his. Second time was enough for Pettine, sliding Amos over with T Will taking the other Safety slot. Unsung hero last night was O. Burks. Did not have to play another hybrid/SS in the LB slot, shut down the Lions run-short pass game into the void 5-10 yards beyond the LOS. Was huge after the 1st quarter last night.

Add to it, Lions had 66 yds of Total Offense in the 2nd half... and, it was the officials that ripped them off. No discussion whatsoever about the calls missed that benefitted DET earlier in the game.... None.

One okay Jones (could've been Williams) was literally shoved and fell over on a pass route right in front of ref - no call for PI. (No challenge either). The Lions did not score on 4th and goal either - normally there is about 5 to 10 minutes of review, yet nothing on that play and they called it a score. Refs gifted Packers that huge call at the end - but Pack still may have had a shot at FG. There was a missed PI on Redman. So Lions were screwed twice AND Packers were screwed twice. Even Steven!

Yesss ! That brought a big smile to my face. Other than Adams who can juke anyone, that element has been missing for far too long. Mercedes has that abilty as well.

Some of you don't have a clue about what you are talking about! Shepard had bad day I'll give you that. the punt issue was bad judgement. the interception was not his fault. It was a bad pass compounded by his slipping. It was a lucky bounce for Detroit! Simple as that. If you think any one could have made that catch( which was thrown behind you while your feet are sliding out from under you). Also, think of the speed at which this was happening!
Many of you had Jones as the second coming! He shows some warts and now he's the goat! Shut up! Give these guys a break!

It wasn't an easy catch, but not very difficult. A pro makes that catch and doesn't have his hands 3 feet apart as he's going after it. The ball hit him in the chest. We all still love Jones, but he has to take his lumps for that poor performance.

The ball hit him in the face mask. That's why it bounced to Detroit. That is a mental error - not looking the ball in to your hands. The muffed punt is another mental error in judging the ball. Rookies do this and survive by learning not to do the same things again.

I can agree with most everything you said. Concerning Aaron Jones, I’ve felt that for too long we’ve been to quick to anoint someone. Remember a few years back a rookie QB by the name of Cam Newton came along and was anointed the “new look of quarterbacking”. There have been many who came after that we heaped praise on and so many have fizzled. Let’s let these guys “earn” the praise before we give it. Regarding Shepard, I recall Max McGee telling Jim Irwin, as a receiver if you touch the ball you have to catch it. You don’t hear the receivers ever saying after they make a spectacular catch that it “was a lucky catch” they all tell you how great they are.

No. Not a bad throw at all. Packers like all NFL teams have their QB throw to a spot on the field or pattern depending on the playcall. Rodgers is the best at spotting the ball on pass routes. The pass was exactly where it was in the pattern to prevent interceptions. Kid slip and bounced off his helmet. One in a million. Other side get breaks too....

There was so much emphasis on whether there was hands to the face by the broadcast team, but was there any consideration that Flowers had grasped Bakhs collar for several seconds and was tugging him up and down?
The Rule:
ARTICLE 6. DEFENSIVE HOLDING
It is defensive holding if a player grasps an eligible offensive player (or his jersey) with his hands, or extends an arm or arms to cut off or encircle him. See 12-1-6.
Penalty: For holding by the defense: Loss of five yards and automatic first down.
With all the hand fighting on a typical play, I can see where either the d-lineman or o-lineman might briefly have their appendages where they shouldn't be. I wouldn't want holding on either player in those situations - it would be brutal to the game. But Flowers was hanging on for several seconds not just the typical swatting back and forth.
I couldn't tell you if the illegal hands to the face penalty was warranted (although according to the refs it was the prolonged nature of Flowers thrust to Bakhs head or neck area that prompted it. And he was definitely in Bakhs neck area). But even if illegal contact wasn't warranted, he should have been called for defensive holding.
Six of one, half a dozen of the other. It's pissing me off that nationally the D-holding aspect of the play was ignored.

The league made it very clear that they want that move gone. It's flat out dangerous to the offensive lineman. But the NFL league office has left their game refs without the context to make the calls this year. As a result, the refs have gone rouge. Teams are not listening to New York. Having FUBAR the game calls for the on site refs, I don't blame them one bit. My guess is the game ref teams are talking among themselves, about how to handle PI and Holding and pacing the game. Giving what's happening, their is very little chance they are talking to the league office in New York. What a mess.

yep holding seems like an ok call here. And while we are at it how about the non call of offensive PI on the WR interfering with King in the endzone where King had a good line to the ball on the left side of the endzone and got held by the WR?

Game Ball to medical science. Great to see 2 women recovered from cancer in the stands to cheer on their husbands then go home to continue raising their kids.
My mom got cancer in 1956 and fought for 5 years before she passed. If only they could have done then what they can do now. Please give generously to any legitimate cancer organization.

Thoughtful post. Best Buddy of mine had esophagul cancer at 46. Simple physical caught it. He had a then experimental surgery. He lived another 6 years and passed at 52. Those 6 years would have never happened years ago. In those 6 years he got to see his kids grow to teenagers. May not seem like much. It was everything to him.
I wish I could say he was a Packer fan. He wasn’t. He loved the Raiders. Phil Villapiano even visited him when he was dying it was one of his dreams. I don’t mean to write a sappy post but I miss my friend everyday most of all on Sundays. Use to tease him how our Pack whipped the Raiders in SBII. Every penny makes a difference even if it just buys a little time.

Great Packer victory and is Aaron playing great team ball....I think Aaron Jones is our superstar running back on turf and Jamaal is our superstar running back on grass. I also thought Aaron took an intentional knee to the back and was off from then on !!!!:^)

Game Balls: Aaron Rodgers, Jamaal Williams, Lazard, Packers OL, Mason Crosby, Alexander, the Smiths, Pettine for his defensive adjustments.
Lame Calls: Lions TD that didn't happen, Sheppard, Aaron Jones, Redmond at safety in the 1st quarter.
As for the officiating, there were the usual poor calls by the officials. However, without the turnovers the Packers would have had over 500 yards of offense and another 10 points (at least). After the first quarter the Packers won both sides of the LOS especially in the ground game. The Lions had their chances and they came up short thanks to strong defensive play after the first 2 Lion drives and their own miscues.
As for the hands to the face calls in the 4th quarter I think they were called because the defender had his hands up on Bak for the entire play rather that just a push and release. Yes, Bulaga may have helped to sell it, in which case he made a smart play. I also think that MLF complained to the refs about it earlier in the game and when it looked obvious they threw the flags.
This is a Matt Patricia move brought over from the "Cheatalots" who are never flagged for it.
In any case kudos to MLF, Pettine and the players for overcoming all types of adversity last evening including falling behind early, turnovers and too many injuries, especially to the receiving corps. 5-1, Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

The refs really struggled during this game. 1) How is that a TD for the Lions during the 1st q ball never crossed the front part of the goal line! The last official to the party number 100 just throws up his hands. Should have been Packers ball on the half yard line on downs. 2) The Lions defense was able to grab in the secondary all game. When Aaron Jones tried to run a wheel route they slung him down no call should have been illegal contact. 3) How about the phantom holding call on Jenkins after Jones had run the ball 10 yards down the field for a first down on a rushing attempt during the first half. These were the 3 calls that stand out as being not so good. Otherwise I can not think of anything else to complain about on either side.

Thought that it was really cool to see Mason get some love @ the end of the game winning field goal. Don't have a lot of confidence in Shepard right now & the receiving group really needs some help if Adams cannot come back from his injury & who the heck is Allen Lazard?!?!?!??! Kid looks hungry & ready, let him play against the Raiders in Geronimo's spot & see if he can keep it up! The secondary still makes me wonder if they know how to cover, the Lions sure do! The run defense finally looked decent & the Smith Bros. sure make me forget about Clay. Williams looks like he's getting better & is really becoming a dependable RB, Jones seemed like he was still basking in the light of the Dallas game, he really had is head up the kazoo last night. Every year I say this, the officiating can't get any worse than it was this year & they ALWAYS prove me wrong, absolutely horrible calls last night but this time it went to the other team. The Packers have had their share of bad officiating over the years folks so, don't feel too bad for the Lions.

Game balls to Lazard and Preston Smith. I doubt we would have won without Lazard coming up big when it mattered. And the sack by Smith was really impressive; I've never seen anybody get off the line that fast. I thought for sure he was going to be called offsides.

What a load of crap with all the hullabaloo on the hands to the face calls. How many thousands and thousands and thousands of holding calls were made because the d lineman jerks or moves or fell in a way that made the ref think there had to be holding when there wasn't? An O lineman can even be called for holding when he blocks too well and pancakes the other guy down flat and the ref thinks he must have grabbed him to make him fall like that. Now there are two hands to the face misses and the world falls apart? Nonsense.

One of my pet peeves is when a D-lineman is getting owned then falls to the turf and gets rewarded with a holding call. Same thing with the pancake blocks. The D actually benefits by sucking. See it all the time and it pisses me off.

Game Ball to Lazzard: not only for his great catch but for his absolute mugging of Coleman on that down and out. He’s a beast and we will see more if him. I watched him play at Iowa Stare and he is for real!
Game Ball to Williams for his career longest run and most of all his head hitting the dirt instead of taking the touchdown to pat his stats... a team play.
Game ball to Mathsay for just gutting it up thru the hell he has gone thru in his personal life. Kudos to you Matt!!
Lame call: nose picking Bugger trying to make a broadcasting name (great player) for himself by his constant slanted ref bashing.
Lame call Sheppard’s game. He’s a good ball player and we’ll see him redeem himself for sure.

Sheppard's a preseason training camp star, he shows nothing in runbacks or receiving so far...another JAG, of which there are too many of on the receiving corp...better go offense next draft or make a trade now for another receiver..many of these guys are UDFA's for a reason...

If he learned anything - he learned to put his hand in the air. You can be a great returner the odd time - but the most important thing is to catch the ball when it should be caught ( ie not inside our 5 yard line) and if you have a chance for a return take it but I would rather see a caught ball when a runback might be available then a fumbled ball because the opposition arrived at the same time as the ball. Finally when the injuries occured he was told to fair catch everything I bet because he was on the field. He had a bad game but I believe he can be a good player for the team.

Happy for the win - exasparated with the refereeing - Still remember them stealing a win last year from us against the Vikings for the penalty on Matthews sack that negated a game winning interception. But I cannot believe that the Football Gods allowed us to win that game that we literally tried to throw away. First series a dropped pass that was a first down and made us punt - come on Allison - happens too much. Second series a fumble. Then Shepard trying to get himself killed - PUT YOUR HAND UP AND FAIR CATCH the ball. Then falling and not catching the ball at the 1 and causing the interception on a well thrown ball. The defense was asleep - at least the Dbacks were asleep at the start of the game before they woke up - luckily they were strong enough only allow fieldgoals. Finally even the Lions got a break - the TD 4th down play was stopped from my looks at the replay - the official with the vision said no and the guy who was screened by the players put his arms up - and to me the official review was much too short to have been effective. In any case - a win is a win.

Game balls to all Packers except Shep and AJ.
Lame to all the whining going on about the refs. The Pack were on the wrong end of some calls against philly. But they failed to score twice inside the 5! The lolions had chance after chance and kicked 5 FG's F-em! I'll take any win any way, seen too many bad loses since the Super Bowl. The reffing in the NFL is horrendous this year across the board, it's currently just part of the game. I'm sure we'll be on the short end of the stick with calls again this season.

It was sheer torture listening to booger and what's his name. I would have listened to Wayne and Larry,but the radio broadcast was about 3 seconds ahead of TV and kind of took the element of surprise out of watching the game. I hope we only have one Mon. night game.
