Packers Pass Rush Shines in Win Over Titans

The Green Bay Packers defense had eight sacks for the first time in almost 20 years, with seven players registering those eight sacks.

In a game that featured the Green Bay Packers defense getting eight sacks and forcing three turnovers, it was two fourth quarter plays that showed the potential of this Jeff Hafley defense.

Twice in the fourth quarter, on third down and long, not only did Hafley bring six players on the pass pressure, he did so using his “Nascar” package. On both plays, in a nickel defense, the front six was Rashan Gary, Kingsley Enagbare, Lukas Van Ness, Preston Smith, Quay Walker and Edgerrin Cooper.

On the two third and longs, Tennessee’s last-chance efforts at a big comeback were thwarted on third down and forced to punt after sacks.

The first play was a sack by Smith, with pressures from Enagbare and Gary.

On the second play, the sack was shared by Cooper and Enagbare with another pressure from Gary. The blitzing ability of the rookie inside linebacker was quite impressive on both plays.

The “Nascar” group the Packers rolled out included all four of its edge rushers. On both plays, it put Van Ness and Enagbare on the inside, over the guards, with Smith and Gary outside over a tackle. For Van Ness, lining up as a defensive tackle over a guard, is a position where he had success at Iowa. Of the six players who were in this group on Sunday, five of them had at least half a sack. The lone exception was Gary.

“I just think we have a lot of depth, and we are rolling guys,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said Sunday on the depth of his defensive line. “A lot of guys are getting snaps, and I think that’s to the benefit of our team. We are going to stay healthy, hopefully, and stay fresher longer.”

The Packers had a lot of success with this package during the days of Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers as the team’s top two edge rushers. In 2014, Matthews led the team with 11 sacks, followed by Peppers with seven. In 2015, the two flipped flopped the top two positions with Peppers finishing with 10.5 and Matthews with 6.5.

Complementing Peppers and Matthews were Nick Perry, Mike Neal and Datone Jones as hybrid end/outside linebackers. It was a defense that led those Packers teams to its deep playoff runs a decade ago.

For this year’s defense to continue the momentum it's gained from the last two games, using this alignment more and more often could be a big problem for opposing offenses. It can also be a way for young players drafted in the last two drafts, Van Ness and Cooper, to see the field along with the more experienced Front 7 players.

If the Packers defense is going to take that next step toward a Super Bowl run, then rushing the passer will be one of the most critical aspects of its unit.

I call it a Gold Rush by the D. Now, when the Pack play the 49ers in the playoffs...well, we will show them the Green Bay 24ers Gold Rush is alive and well.

I always envied those Giants teams from around 2011 that had four or five really good pass rushers. It would be nice to have something like that in Green Bay. Of course, the Titans have a bad O-line and a bad QB, but this was a confidence builder at least. It was great to see Edgerrin Cooper getting in on the action.

I think we can put healthy guys on gameday inactive and still put 8 healthy Dlinemen out there. As the season wears on, and injuries start taking effect, this is going to pay dividends.

This is one of the best DL units we've had in Green Bay in my memory. Whether they measure up to Reggie, Dotson, Gilbert, and Jones remains to be determined. That's kind of a high bar.

Start Cooper over Quay at MLB
Eric over Mcduffie at OLB
and Hopper at the #3 OLB

Use Oladapo/Bullard at MLB/OLB on obvious passing downs.
Put JA at Nickel, Valentine/Stokes at CB 1/2.
Start LVN over Smith eventually
Phase out Kenny Clark over time with Brooks and Start Devonte over Slayton

Jenkins at C, Ryan at RG, Morgan at LG. They said their best five and that means no Myers at C if they truly desire to have their best 5 on the field

Quay is not only the worst starting player on the defense/offense but possibly the worst player on the entire team they need to cut him ASAP. The fact that they didn't cut him and cut the best player in preseason in Kristian the LB is a crime. Even worse they're starting him at MLB and gave the idiot the dot. Why is your worst player on the team starting at MLB and the dumbest player on the team given the green dot? Are they intentionally trying to make the defense struggle?

I still think they're not using enough man press coverage as you can see the middle of the defense getting sliced and diced in this zone.

I would encourage you to send your resume to the Personnel Office of the Bears, Browns, and Jets. This is EXACTLY the kind of thinking that they embrace. You could have a future. You could. I think you should go for it.

Welch played a cool, zero snaps for the broncos in week 3. He has 3 tackles on the season. Tons of journeymen play well in the pre season. Walker may be under performing but he has tons more athletic skill and upside compared to Welch.

I have been a critic of Myers in the past, but I thought he played a decent game Sunday against a very tough Titan interior D-line.

Regarding Walker, I think I will trust Haley's evaluation over yours.

This is how the Packers should play defense when they have a lead in the 4th quarter. Keep bringing pressure on the QB. Don't let him sit back and find open guys in a soft zone or prevent defense. Get after the QB and keep it coming. Keep playing the game like it is a tie score. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

You realize that LaFleur rarely loses when he has the lead going into the 4th quarter? I do, and yet, I find myself wishing we'd just keep our foot on their necks and press down.

In the end, the proof is in the pudding, as they say.

When we lose in the playoffs...every time...it's lost in the 4th. But, I have hope...and Love....and a better team this year...We should move to the show if we keep improving....GPG

I would submit that in 2021, the game was lost much earlier by an inept offense that couldn't put any points on the board, leaving the door open for one bad play by the long snapper to cost us.

When the Packers lead in the fourth quarter, this is how they need to approach defense. Keep underlining the QB with pressure. Don't let him back off and allow open men to enter a soft zone or for defense to be undermined. Go after the quarterback and maintain it. Keep playing the game as if it were a tie score. Travel Pack Go! Still, thanks. Since 61

Enagbare needs more field time....Made better moves to a sack than ANY of our other pass rushers in quite some time. He should be tried as a starter. GPG
