Packers Periscope: Week 9 vs Los Angeles Chargers

If Sunday’s week nine matchup looks like a home game, don’t worry, you’re in the right place. Over 70 percent of seats at Dignity Health Sports Park are expected to be filled by Packers fans. The Chargers are hoping to get their season back on track with a momentous win against a 7-1 team, but now it will be even tougher with an unfavorable crowd. Heck, it’s not every day a team enters a hostile environment on their own field.

The Packers have won six out of the last seven away games against the Chargers. It will also be the team’s final game against the AFC West in 2019. They have already won the first three. Luckily, Green Bay has its highest winning percentage against Los Angeles than any other franchise. Naturally, in their last meeting, the Packers won 27-20 when the Chargers were still in San Diego.

Quarterback Philip Rivers threw for 503 yards in that 2015 contest. So far this year, Rivers and the Chargers’ offense have put up nowhere near those kinds of numbers. They are a middle of the road team with an average offense coming in at 17th overall in total yards. It has become evident Rivers just doesn’t have the same arm that he once had, and the running back duo of Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler aren’t doing much damage. Things deteriorated to the point the team fired offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt on Monday night.

Los Angeles’ defense comes in a little better at number 12 in total defense. However, they can’t seem to get off the field on third down. The Chargers are allowing opposing offenses to convert third downs on 48 percent of their attempts. That bodes well for Aaron Rodgers and company who are converting only 38 percent of their third downs. Honestly, one of the few things this Los Angeles defense has done well this season is creating interceptions. Unfortunately for them, Rodgers has been great at taking care of the ball this season, and they are still without safety Derwin James.

Green Bay, on the other hand, will look to return a star player in wide receiver Davante Adams. Adams was a limited participant during Thursday’s padded practice for the first time since his turf toe injury suffered in week four. Somehow, the Packers have managed to do just fine without him. In large part that is due to the compelling play of Rodgers and running back Aaron Jones. Jones currently leads the NFL with 11 touchdowns while managing to get things done on the ground and through the air.

With Adams back in the lineup, it will be interesting to see if this offense can upstage themselves.

This Sunday will be yet another chance for the defense to ease some concerns. Last week, Andy Reid made Matt Moore look like a quarterback that wasn’t coaching high school football last year. Moore completed 67 percent of his passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine did not have his best game also.

At some point, it would be nice if the defense showed they can stagger an offense without the benefit of a turnover. Those opportunities won’t always be successful. Maybe this is all for a nod for another week because the Chargers have done a poor job at limiting their turnovers in 2019.

Welp here’s to 8-1 and a ninth home game for Green Bay.

Am I the only one who wants Davante to dress but not play unless the game looks like it's going in the wrong direction? I'd prefer Davante at as close to 100% as possible for the 9ers...

No, you are not the only one. I feel the same. Even it means a loss I would rather have a healthy Adams for the long run. At the beginning of the season I was not sure that we would even HAVE a long run but now I am beginning to think that it’s more than possible. I hate having to look forward to the Niners but if we can have Adams back for them it bodes well for a good shot at a playoff run.

The Chargers have a bad ass defense, when they're Healthy. They won't be facing Trubitsky, this week, I expect a LaFleur tribute to Air Coryell and a wide open scheme. Just something to let the rest of the NFC know, you mean business.
