Packers Practice Roundup: August 28, 2022

The Packers practiced Sunday with individual drills open to the media but not team drills.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Matt LaFleur said TE Robert Tonyan will participate in team drills today for the first time this summer.  [He’s doing individual drills (media viewing ends before team periods).]  2) New DNPs at practice besides Jenkins are TEs Nate Becker and Alizé Mack, who picked up injuries against the Chiefs.  3) Matt LaFleur says Elgton Jenkins won’t practice today. “Not necessarily planned, but I’m gonna keep it internal.”  Schneidman

I’m telling you - I’m not letting Rasheed Walker go after that performance last night. He’s ahead of Caleb Jones for me now - although I’d honestly like to see them keep both.  Herman

Rasheed Walker and Zach Tom both logged a team-high 35 snaps in pass protection against the Chiefs. Neither player allowed a single pressure, according to @PFF.  Jacobson

Matt LaFleur says that the Packers' medical staff thought it would be in rookie Christian Watson's best interest to get two more weeks before being put in a game situation, hence his inactive status for preseason finale in Kansas City.  2) Matt LaFleur asked if he has any indication if David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins can be ready for Week 1: "We have no idea. I mean, it's hard to project that without being through practice, seeing how they respond, and getting into team reps."  3) Matt LaFleur says there is no decision yet on whether Mason Crosby will be taken off PUP before Tuesday's deadline.  Wood

Safeties Darnell Savage (hamstring) and Dallin Leavitt (shoulder) returned to practice. Savage’s return completes the secondary, but Leavitt’s return is especially well timed before Tuesday’s cutdown. Leavitt is expected to be a big part of special-teams core.  2) Elgton Jenkins is not practicing today, as Matt LaFleur said this morning.  The Packers say Jenkins’ absence as “nothing to do with the knee.” So that’s a sigh of relief. [It isn't the best sign, though.  TGR]  3) LT David Bakhtiari has returned to practice. Matt LaFleur said he thought Bakhtiari could do individual drills today after missing a practice Tuesday.  4) Matt LaFleur says Mason Crosby could "potentially" practice today, but he can't kick yet. Still trending in the right direction.  [This is confusing to me since I believe Crosby said he "kicked a set" indoors in a previous practice; maybe it wasn't a football that he was kicking.  TGR]  5) Matt LaFleur says issue with Jordan Love's pick near end of the first half wasn't that he threw downfield instead of checking down with the timeout left, but that it wasn't a back-shoulder throw. Against Tampa 2 coverage, LaFleur says Love needed to expect deep safety in middle.  Wood

If you were assuming Dallin Leavitt would be on the Packers' 53-man roster on Tuesday and then go to IR on Wednesday, you weren't alone.  Huber

The Packers have cut LB Ty Summers, a source said. They must be down to 53 by Tuesday but have begun the process today. More moves are likely today and tomorrow. They’re practicing both days and don’t want someone they’re planning to cut getting hurt.  2) Packers coach Matt LaFleur said they released Summers now to give him an opportunity to find another team before the big wave of cuts that are coming.  [But see the Field Yates tweet below - I take leave to doubt Field Yates as to Summers not going through Waivers immediately, but I can't find the exact wording of the agreement abut the return to the three phased cut down system.  TGR] 3) LaFleur suggested the rest of the cuts won't come until Tuesday's deadline. They're going to practice today and tomorrow.  Demovsky

A reminder as rosters narrow: all players that have been waived starting this past Friday and through this Tuesday's 53-man roster reduction are subject to waivers on Wednesday at Noon ET. They will not have the ability to be claimed or find another team prior to Wednesday.  2) The injury settlement negotiated between the Patriots and CB Malcolm Butler is for about 6 regular season weeks. While Butler can sign with another team at any point now, that settlement suggests he would be available to play around mid-to-late October.  Field Yates

Bills have informed rookie punter Matt Araiza that he is being released, effective immediately. Araiza has been accused along with two others of gang raping a 17-year-old girl last year in a civil lawsuit filed on Thursday.  Adam Schefter

Oh, that last point made me sick and everything else in the article trivial. I can't say I wished you didn't include it....but I sure wasn't ready to read such a thing to just be plopped at the end.

I hope they're just trying to make the water more murky when they talk about E.J. and Bakh. Will we not know if we have a line settled till they're in MN?

Possibly. By then, EJ could be healthy enough to play some snaps, but Tom is a good emergency option at RT. Newman should not be at RT, period.

Agreed. I worry about our depth if we're even considering him anywhere but guard.

I’m still waiting for someone to decode the reason why Hanson is a good option too.

Good that Tonyan is back. I think he’s set up for a major bounce-back year. Rodgers will covet his hands and he’ll probably be one of the go-to people in the red zone. We’ll have to wait and see with EJ…… I think he should be able to play at least some snaps at MN (emphasis on should), but Tom is a good emergency option (not a single pressure allowed all preseason!). He should get legitimate conversation to be a starter at RT or RG (of course, we’d first have to see how he holds up in an actual game). The Packers have such a deep Oline with many exciting prospects that could all shape into quality linemen; the Oline be formidable when EJ and Bakh have fully returned. Good thing Savage and Leavitt are back (I thought the latter would have been out for longer when I saw his injury). If Crosby isn’t ready, I like Ahmed; he’s been great. Coco too. Who do you all think is most likely be cut? Who do you think will be on the PS?

Herman was telling us Hanson really has been the star of camp a week ago. Now he would go Walker over Jones on one sighting, playing right not left and a fairly equal performance.

I liked Walker and the fact that we got him considerably. I want to keep him, but one showing is not enough to get a roster space after a bad preseason and injury issues (albeit I think that they are partially linked) over consistent performance. Put him on the PS and let’s see if he can sustain it.

I agree on Hanson. Maybe just a perception, but it seems he played worst every preseason game and Thursday was a skunk of a performance. The starting right side of Hanson and Newman shook my confidence in Steno and Butkus a bit. Do they believe Hanson and Newman are the top backups and potential starters at RG/RT in MN?

Huh.

I'm reading how Tom hasn't allowed any pressure this pre-season but I think the Packers offense will have greater run significance then ever before.
That may seem no different in evaluating OL guys, but I'm thinking that players who can't move their opponent out of an designated space will get considerable more scrutiny and won't be considered starters going forward.
In other words, the oline grading system may have changed over the past year or so and some players may surprise or disappoint you in when they start or even get released.

I really like Tom. Looking to be a another day 3 OL draft steal like Linsley, Sitton, Lang, JRJ, Tausher, Wells, Tretter.

He's so quick and coordinated in his positioning. Guys just do not get around him. In fact, his hands to the face penalty Thursday was due to Tom literally blocking TWO GUYS! And he is only going to get stronger and more technically excellent.

He's like Jenks for his value to the team. Both can play any position on the line and not be a liability. What a luxury to have.

After Dave, Jenks, Myers, JRJ, Nijman...I think Tom is #6...ahead of Newman now (who needs to stay at G) and certainly Hanson.

8 positions "available" on the 53 according to Coach Matt and Gutey.
16 prospects to the PS.
27 player cuts tomorrow.
In theory, only 3 players on the current 80 man roster could be off the team tomorrow.

Of course, Team Gutey will be using a fine tooth comb until Wednesday to staff the PS. Several will be from other teams...some prospects Gutey had on his draft board.

I expect most teams have their rosters mostly set like the Packers do. Which is why losing a cut player to another team's 53 is so very rare. The last cut Packer signed to a 53 was Taysom Hill (Saints) 5 years ago.

53+ 16 PS=69. Not sure where your getting only three people losing their jobs but my math says a total of 11 from the 80

I’m happy that Tom has looked so good. I would like to find out how he has done, in 11:11, against Gary and Smith. Because if he were to start against the Queens it would be Z and hunter. Both of those are a hand full, even for veteran tackles.

The only guy ahead v Gary is Nijman, or was (it could have changed)

I also decided to include the tidbit about Malcom Brown reaching an injury settlement for 6 weeks. Not that I think Brown might be a target for the Packers, necessarily. In another thread I suggested generating some cap space so the team could pick up a #3 OLB or a #3 safety and have the means to sign a name player in week two when contracts are no longer guaranteed for veterans.

i also was just thinking ahead to the trade deadline in week 8 (Buffalo Game). We don't necessarily know now which position might need a replacement due to injury or a player who isn't playing as projected.

I am sure Gute is looking at these kind of transactions and will keep them in mind.

Two years in a row of having a rookie OL as the highest rated player during the preseason. Let's just hope that Tom has a better regular season than Newman if he has to start the season at RT. His one real blemish, the hands to the face was him saving Caleb Jones from giving up a sack or at least a pressure on the play. The guy is impressive.

Tom's technique is so good that I doubt he will struggle like Newman did last year. Still with Hunter and Z on the docket he's sure got his hands full for his first start in the NFL.
